Can't write to desktop

hello,
somehow my sister can't write files to her desktop.
what should i check to make this feature available again?
thanks
max

she has read/write permission
when you double click on the desktop folder in her home folder finder says "There is no application set to open the document “Desktop”." search for an application....
when you try to drag a file to the desktop, you get the transparent cirlce with a line through it "no" symbol, not the green plus
when you try to save to the desktop," The document “can't write to desktop: Apple Support Communities” could not be exported as “can't write to desktop/ Apple Support Communities”. You don’t have permission."
but info says she does have permission...
this happened after transfering files from her old drive.

  • Can't write to desktop. I get Error Code -36.

I recently had a battery problem where my black MacBook unexpected powered off in the middle what I was doing. After restart, I noticed right away that the desktop image was different, and I couldn't change it. A call to Apple got my battery replaced, and the tech support person recommended that I do an archive and reinstall. That helped with some of the problems I was having, but a lingering issue I'm having is that I cannot write to the Desktop. Whenever I try to copy to the Desktop, I get an error with the yellow ! triangle reading, "The Finder cannot complete ther operation because some data in "Filename" could not be read or written. (Error code -36)"
On what I suspect is a related note, I have not been able to turn off Filevault due to a file read/write error.
I am othewise able to use my computer, and another account I have on the same machine seems not to be affected.
I would hugely appreciate any help anyone can offer.

  • Can't write to Desktop ƒ; contradictory permissions info in the Get Info window

I don't have write permission for my Desktop folder.
In the folder's Get Info window, under Sharing & Permissions, it reports a contradiction:  it says "You can only read," and at the same time under Privilege it says I have "Read & Write" access. If try I use the popup menu to change "Read & Write" to something else, it goes right back to "Read & Write" upon releasing the menu.  At any rate, "You can only read" is the correct part of the contradictory info.
My account is an Admin account.  I am typing the correct password to unlock the fields in the Get Info window.  I've tried repairing permissions in Disk Utility, and that didn't help.
A user named bennarsson reported the exact same problem in this thread:  https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3039851?start=0&tstart=0
baltwo responded that "If you've selected your Desktop folder, then something is extremely wrong if it says You can only read, while showing you under name with read and write privileges."  No kidding!  Other than that, bennarsson didn't get any solution to the problem.
Any ideas?  It's pretty frustrating not being able to modify anything in my Desktop folder!

Try this. Launch the Terminal app in /Utilities, copy & paste this this command into TextEdit, substitute your actual username for the placeholder, copy and paste it into the window that pops up, and hit the return key. So if your username was mike, it would be sudo chown -R mike:admin ~/Desktop
    sudo chown -R username:admin ~/Desktop
When the Password: prompt pops up, carefully type in your admin password, since nothing shows up on the screen, and hit the return key. That should do it.

If you want to preserve the data on the boot drive, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that isn't fully working. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
    1. Boot from the Recovery partition or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) Launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”
    2. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, boot the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
    3. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.

  • Can you share the desktop through Apple TV

Curious? What all can you push to the TV screen.  Can you push the desktop to the TV?

No, you can't share the desktop.
AppleTv does not mirror video content it actually decodes compatible media streams pushed/pulled to it or accessed via the internet.
    Check the AppleTV specs/write up.

I have 2TB G-Drive, it will only Write to operating system 10.8.3 (Mountain Lion) and NOT the original 10.6 (Snow Leopard) can I write with Both OS Systems....Please Advise how to

I think I see where you're going with this: do you mean you're sharing an external drive which shows up on the Mac with Mountain Lion, but not Snow Leopard?
    Possible explanations:
    1) How is it connected? Does the external drive have two USB (or FireWire) connections, and you have a cable going from the drive to each Mac? If so, that's a big no-no. Never daisy chain the same drive to two different computers at the same time. You'd have to use one cable, dismount the drive from the Mac currently using it, then plug it into the other Mac and mount it there. It's a one-at-a-time thing.
    2) You're already doing the above correctly, but when using the Mac with Snow Leopard, when you turn on the drive, it refuses to appear on the desktop. I see this all the time when booting between one OS and the other on my Mac Pro. No idea why, but when Mountain Lion uses the drive, and I then try to use the same drive after booting into Snow Leopard, it won't appear (or only some partitions will appear) on the desktop.
Simple, though odd solution. Launch Disk Utility. The drive partitions will then mount as they should. You don't even have to do anything in Disk Utility. Just launching it will cause the drives to mount as they should have in the first place.

  • Can I use Palm Desktop 4.2.1 with Snow Leopard?

I had a Visor Pro, which unfortunately was stolen along with my Mac PowerBook G4.  I have ordered a new Mac laptop (MacBook Pro), but I am not going to be able to replace the Visor.
I want to be able to continue using the Palm Desktop application - I had version 4.2.1 for the Mac. I have 10 years of information in that program, I don't know one better and would like to continue to use it, Visor or no Visor.
    I have several questions:
Is Palm Desktop Version 4.2.1 for Mac compatible and will run on a MacBook Pro running Mac OS 10.6 Snow Leopard?
If I do a "migration assistant" to move my applications to the new computer from my backup harddrive, will the Palm program move over okay and be useable? Or,---
Do I have to install Palm Desktop from scratch?  If so, can I download Palm Desktop from the website - I cannot find a page anywhere on palm.com to download the program.  Does anyone have a link?
Or, is the Palm Desktop program that would work with Snow Leopard a different version than the 4.2.1 I have?  And if so, how do I upgrade/move my data from 4.2.1 to a newer version?
I don't need to be able to HotSync as I no longer have the Palm device.  I just want to be able to use the desktop software.
    Thanks for the help,
    Tara

    Tara,
I could have been you asking a very similar question, although I'm still not sure on the solution after some of the knowledgeable answers.
Like you, I have been using Palm Desktop to store 5 years of information, and I'm getting ready to buy the new iMac who reps tell me is probably not compatible with Palm Software anymore or will not and I should find other alternatives to store all my information.
For instance, I use Palm as my date book and To Do List which I find very convenient.  Apple reps told me I could try getting used to iCal for this which I have been doing lately to try & get used to it.
Then there are my addresses.  I also use Palm to store all my basic addresses (some with E-mail, some without).  It was recommended to me to just use the address book that comes with the iMac.  I've never used it but I can see in itself, it's easy to add addresses.  My computer consultant also told me that she could easily transfer the addresses from those on Palm to my Thunderbird which I use with Firefox.  So, if all my addresses were transferred from my Palm to Thunderbird, then I would just have them on Thunderbird, but I find it easier navigating them in Palm.
The last thing I use Palm for and the most important is under the menu of "Memos".  For each category, I have created an alphabetized subject, like computers, legal, passwords, shopping (about 30 topics) and when I want to save important information, I go to that category and write as much or as little as a reference.  I wondered "which" application I would use in order to create a similar way of looking up information on subjects.
I copied/pasted it all into a simple word document but that's not really made for what I want.
The last time I went to an Apple store and explained what I wanted -- they were the ones who suggested to use iMac addresses to store my Palm addresses, iCal to use as a new calendar and to do list, and finally an application (on the dock) called "E-mail" where I could do a similar thing as I did on my Palm by creating a series of categories, and when I click on it, a memo page comes up where I can type anything I want to related to that topic.  It was demonstrated to me, altho I forgot how she did it, but although it was not meant for a function like that, it's easily done as with the Palm.  I told my computer consultant this.
She was concerned that I may not be able to use my Thunderbird G-mail system if I have all my info in iMac applications.  Yet if the addresses are in Thunderbird as well, I can't see why that would interfer.
Anyway, today she sent me this link & question and I start reading about a "sync" application and I would have no problem.  They also mentioned software called Benno, but told me to try and use Apple apps first instead of having to go out and buy a whole new application to replace the functions of Palm.
Ideally, I would love to continue to use Palm Desktop as I'm using it on this desktop, but I'm  not clear if I can.  If I can't, what might be my best solution given what I wrote.  I'd really appreciate it.
    Thanks,

  • Can I write an Applescript to tag audio files?

Can I write an AppleScript to tag audio files? I do not want to involve iTunes in the process; I just want to add tags to an audio file on the desktop (eventually in batch).
    Perfect scenario:
I drag an MP3 file (or multiple MP3 files) over the AppleScript, and a dialog box appears which lets me enter fields like Name, Artist, Year, Album, Track Number (x of y), Genre, etc., and once I've filled them in and clicked OK, it goes and writes them into each of the files.
Without me having to drag them into iTunes to do it.

I would search http://darwinports.com/ for a termnial app that is able to edit id3-tags
Then perhaps a AppleScript-Studio Interface for it and there you go.

  • I can't write to my Drobo

I have a new iMac (like this):
I am trying to connect the Drobo that I used to use with my Windows Computer.  It has 4 drives @ 3TB each, and the whole drive is over half full, so I am not terribly interested in the cost that it would take to "back up" that whole disk pack.  It took some shenanigans (reboots of both the drive and the computer; disconnections, and reconnections; fiddling around with MAC Disk Utility) to get it to show up in Finder at all.  I still have issues with it unmounting and needing to remount it, but that's not my main issue.
    THE REAL PROBLEM:
Though I can get the Drobo to show up in finder, and I can read from it, I can't write to it.  Based on some earlier searching I tried this terminal command, which helped it to show up in finder, but didn't seem to affect it's being read-only:
    new-host-3:~ davidholcomb$ getfileinfo /Volumes/Drobo
    directory: "/Volumes/Drobo"

Looking at another thread (partition map check failed because no slices were found), which I wandered into because I was getting this error in Disk Utility upon running Verify Disk because I got a failure when I tried to "mount" the drive in Disk Utility:
This thread suggested I try a couple additional Terminal Commands, which I will post the results of here:

Can anyone help me with a next step to make this drive read/writeable?

Turns out that the Drobo needs to be plugged straight into computer. I had it via hub. Though it has worked for the past couple weeks in this configuration, the new update pushed it over the edge, I guess. Plugged in directly and working fine.

Here is an example of what section three might look like:
In this example there are two drives. Drive E is a Samsung DVD-ROM drive with a model designation of SD-616 that has firmware version F000. Drive F is an NEC drive with a model designation of NR-7900A that has firmware version 1.08.Updating the firmware
If the optical drive you are using came with your computer, check with the support site for your computer for a firmware update. Typically you will need to go to the support website for the computer maker and click on a "downloads" or "updates" link, and then enter your computer model designation and operating system version to see what updates are available. Then look through the available updates for a firmware update for your optical drive. Download the updater and run it. If you need assistance applying the update, contact the maker of your computer.
If the optical drive you are using came as a separate part (was not included with a computer), check the support site for the drive maker for a firmware update. Sometimes the manufacturer is not clear in the CD Diagnostics results. In that case, you may just have to search the Internet for the drive model designation. You can usually find out who made the drive by looking through the results of such a search. Once you have identified who made your drive, go to the support website for that company. Look for a "downloads" or "updates" link, and then enter your optical drive model designation. Download the updater and run it. If you need assistance applying the update, contact the maker of the optical drive.Verifying that the firmware was updated
    Run CD Diagnostics again.
Examine the CD Diagnostics results. The firmware version for the drive should be the new version.

Also, you mentioned that you have been successful burning a CD with the Windows OS.  Make sure that you have closed all software programs that can access the CD burner so that there isn't a conflict for the drive.   Sometimes chaning the burn speed from "maximum" to 8x can also help in this situation.
I hope this information helps ...

  • Can you write an excel file on client machine instead of on the server

I am trying to user cfSpreadSheet functon. The first question I have is, can you write the file on a client machine? I tried but they all end up on the server drive. Scecond question, is there a way to do row and column range formating in CF9.0? SpreadsheetFormatCellRange function is only available for ColdFusion server version 9.01.
    Thanks.

To expand on Dan's answer: CF doesn't have any interaction with the client browser at all: client->server comms are handled by the client and the web server; the web server simply asks CF to provide the response data if the file requested is a CF file.  But even then all CF does is process the requested file and return data to the web server.
Also, one of the restrictions of the HTTP protocol is that that there is *no* *way* that the server can write to the client machine.  All it can do is send data to the client agent (eg: a web browser) in response to the client agent requesting it.  Can you imagine the sort of security problems one would open one's self up to if a remote web server could write to your PC????
