Can't write to disk

rec'd a refurbished ipod mini (4GB) friday. loaded it up and have been enjoying it for two days.
Today, it will not synch past a few songs or podcasts. I get the message below.
Attempting to copy to the disk failed. the disk could not be read to or written to.
I've restored, and am a little frustrated. Ideas?

Just curious, are you by any chance on a Toshiba notebook computer? If you are, take a look at this article-

If not, this article also addresses that error message:

  • "Can't read or write to disk" error message

    hi...
got my husband a 16g nano and i'm trying to sync his songs. i have the newest version of itunes installed. it put almost half of the songs on the nano and all of a sudden itunes has an error that says something about "can't write to nano. disk is not readable or writeable." i can view the nano contents, but i can't add to it and it will not let me sync it anymore.
does anyone have any suggestions? thanks!

    thanks jason,
i looked at the tips page you suggested and i tried it again on my new laptop and it still won't work. i'm going to try to restore it and then put it on the laptop again, hopefully that will work.
the odd thing is it will start to sync and it comes up with the error message about half way through syncing (half the songs do make it to the ipod.) why can't it sync the whole way?? i'm perplexed.

  • "Can't read from or write to disk...." iPod error

I recently switched from my old PowerBook G4 (running Leopard 10.5.2) to a newer MacBook Pro (running Leopard 10.5.5). I migrated my account and permissions from the PB to the MacBook Pro, and everything is working just fine except for iTunes (version 8.0.2) and my older 160 GB iPod Classic (running 1.1.2).
NOTE: THE VERSION OF iTunes ON THE PB WAS VERSION 8.0.1.
Since the migration, I've been getting this "can't read from or write to disk..." error whenever I attempt to sync my iPod to iTunes. Previously, I'd never had any problems. I have tried to restore the iPod using iTunes - didn't work. I have tried different USB to dock connector cables - didn't work. I have even tried completely re-formatting the iPod using Disk Utility - didn't work. Everytime I begin syncing the iPod, it starts out just fine. At varying degrees of completion it ALWAYS fails with the same error.
I had an idea. I tried syncing the iPod to a different computer - my G5 4 x 2.5 GHz (running Leopard 10.5.5) with iTunes (version 8.0.2). I still got the same error. I haven't dropped it, submerged it in water or done anything to it that would otherwise compromise its functionality. So, I'm at a loss.
    PLEASE! PLEASE! PLEASE!
Does anyone have any other suggestions? - OTHER THAN BUYING A NEW IPOD

    UPDATE:
OK, after the visit to my Genius Bar; I thought of a variable that wasn't previously considered. Because their transfer of media was successful without the slightest hitch, I had to figure out something else.
Everytime I had tried to sync the iPod with my various Macs, I was using the same process. Since all of my music and movies "live" on an external 500 GB drive, I was attempting to use that same drive whenever I would try to sync. It occurred to me that possibly the failing was in the drive and not the iPod.
I have part of that library on a Power Mac G4 867 DP (running 10.4.9). I updated the iTunes on that machine to 8.0.2, connected the iPod and made a successful transfer of a large amount of media!
My only problem now is that I can't figure out how to get the 500 GB drive to stop hanging on transfer and update of my Genius information. The drive just completely stalls and I get the spinning wheel from iTunes and the application ceases to respond. When I force quit iTunes, the drive recovers fine. I don't have any problems transferring data to and from it and Disk Utility reports that the drive is healthy.
I have tried re-installing iTunes on all affected Macs - didn't help. I believe my problem may exist in the iTunes Library file or in the associated .xml document. My only concern is that if I do a completely fresh install of iTunes where those files would be re-created, I would lose all of my play and ratings data as well as the information about when my files were added. On a related note, when playing the music from this drive through iTunes. I don't have any issues at all.
    ANY SUGGESTIONS?

  • I can't write to a external disk in my MacBook Air

Hi, I have a (Samsung M3 Station External Hard drive (1.5T) ) and i want to use it  in my MacBook Air, but i'm having some problems with it. The MACBook Air recognizes de disk and I can read the information but is impossible to copy or  write  any information on this disk.
Is there any chance to use an external drive whith MAC computers?

Your external disk is probably formatted with the NTFS file system (Windows).
OS X can't write to the NTFS file system.
If the external disk will only be used with your MBA save any data you don't want to lose and use Disk Utility to re-format it with an OS X supported file system.
If it needs to work with both OS X and Windows machines then FAT32 or exFAT are the only compatible file systems.
There is third party software available that will allow OS X to write to an NTFS file system but I have no experience with that so don't know how well it works.

  • [SOLVED]trying to mount disk so all users can read write

I'm trying to mount my hard drive to /mnt/2TB automatically at startup.  My /etc/fstab looks like this...
    /dev/sda2 / ext4 errors=remount-ro 0 1
    /dev/sdb1 /mnt/2TB ntfs auto,exec,rw,users,uid=1000 0 0
    ls / shows...
    drwxrwxrwx 3 root root 4096 Jun 30 20:09 mnt
    ls /mnt shows...
    drwxrwxrwx 1 root root 4096 Jun 20 21:21 2TB
When I restart the disk mounts fine but I cannot write anything to disk.  I want to mount this disk so that anyone can read, write, and execute on it.  I specified these options in my fstab.  What options am I missing?
    EDIT:
I figured it out.  I had to install ntfs-3g.  Once I did that I changed my fstab to this...
    /dev/sda2 / ext4 errors=remount-ro 0 1
    /dev/sdb1 /mnt/2TB ntfs-3g defaults,uid=1000 0 0
    Then I changed /mnt permissions to ...
    drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4096 Jun 30 20:09 mnt
Then I changed /mnt/2TB permissions to...
    drwxrwxrwx 1 necbot users 4096 Jun 20 21:21 2TB
    Works great!

I ran across this in the ntfs-3g manual which might be of some interest. It appears that adding "permissions" to the mount options for ntfs-3g might accomplish roughly what you want, but you may have to perform some work to get it operational. Likewise, the Windows ACL may interfere and a quick glance seems to me to suggest that you might have to tweak things from Windows to get the permissions working well.
I personally have all of my Windows partitions mounted under /windows, but I can see why that isn't an ideal solution if you're dabbling in Arch or have things you want to more easily share in one direction.
Hope this helps somewhat even though you've already marked the topic as solved.

I can't seem to figure out why I get the error that I can't write to the disk. Does that mean I can't write to the ipod? I've tried 5 r's and still can't figure it out. Is is an OS issue on my comp? Anyway, I can't figure it out...thanks for your time.

  • Can't write to external disk drivers

    Hi guys
I own a 2TB TC. I've connected two WD hard drivers through usb hub and they are all reformatted to FAT32. I can see them and I can have access to them as well but the problem is I can't write to them and I can't copy any thing to them. Can any one help?

Have you verified and if necessary, repaired the disk(s) using Disk Utility on your Mac?

  • Can't add songs unless I restore the iPod. (unable to write to disk)

    iPod Shuffle 512
Brand new XL SP2 machine with all windows updates
The only way I can put new songs on my shuffle is if I (1) restore it, & (2) let it automatically fill. If I want specific songs to load I have to delete some of the songs that populated the playlist automatically & hurry up & add the desired songs to the ipods playlist because once it's done uploading it wont accept any more songs. It will give me that "Unable to write to disk" error. In a nutshell, the ipod will only upload during the initial session immediately after restoring.
If I come back the next day or even just 2 minutes later wanting to add an additional song I have to start the process all over.
This happened using the newest version of iTunes as well as an older version (about a year old) that I keep around because I know its stable & one of the updates in between caused my video podcasts to be choppy.
Anything I can do or am I stuck?
    I knew I shoulda got a Mac!

In my experince Mac is no better than PC, its all in the user and how much you know. I fix more Macs daily than PCs. Of course all the PC I work on I built myself... lets see you build your own Mac!

  • Qosmio X300 - Can't write disk after firmware update

I have a serious proble. After a firmware-update for my pioneer dvd-drive I can't write anything anymore on disks.
I really need some help there

I just received my new drive and installed it on my Qosmio x300 13E.
It is a LG GBW-T10N drive and it works perfectly. The included software allows me in combination with the newest driver for the nvidia gforce x9800 graphic controller to upscale films to a full HD resolution.
It is absolutely amazing. I just had to try it with a normal dvd and I had a full HD entertainment on my flat screen tv.
The replacement of the broken drive was easy. You simply need to loosen one screw on the bottom of the notebook and then you simply pill it out.
If anyone wants to do it too, I can give accurate advice for it.

  • I can't write to my Drobo

I have a new iMac (like this):
I am trying to connect the Drobo that I used to use with my Windows Computer.  It has 4 drives @ 3TB each, and the whole drive is over half full, so I am not terribly interested in the cost that it would take to "back up" that whole disk pack.  It took some shenanigans (reboots of both the drive and the computer; disconnections, and reconnections; fiddling around with MAC Disk Utility) to get it to show up in Finder at all.  I still have issues with it unmounting and needing to remount it, but that's not my main issue.
    THE REAL PROBLEM:
Though I can get the Drobo to show up in finder, and I can read from it, I can't write to it.  Based on some earlier searching I tried this terminal command, which helped it to show up in finder, but didn't seem to affect it's being read-only:
    new-host-3:~ davidholcomb$ getfileinfo /Volumes/Drobo

Looking at another thread (partition map check failed because no slices were found), which I wandered into because I was getting this error in Disk Utility upon running Verify Disk because I got a failure when I tried to "mount" the drive in Disk Utility:
This thread suggested I try a couple additional Terminal Commands, which I will post the results of here:

Can anyone help me with a next step to make this drive read/writeable?

Turns out that the Drobo needs to be plugged straight into computer. I had it via hub. Though it has worked for the past couple weeks in this configuration, the new update pushed it over the edge, I guess. Plugged in directly and working fine.

  • Can't see USB disk attached to other mac

I have an Airport Express, on the network is a Mac Mini which has an USB disk attached to it (to the Mac Mini).
However, I can't see the disk from any other mac that uses the Airport (this used to work)
I've looked for "disk sharing" in Preferences and in the Airport Setup Utility, but couldn't find anything.
I've also made the Sharing & Permissions of the USB disk for "Me" and "Everyone" as " Read & Write"
Any idea how I can resolve this issue?
    Thanks,
    Awfers

Ok, thanks for clarifying. You don't need to change any settings within the AirPort Utility, but let's double-check your Mac Mini's settings to make sure that it is both sharing the disk properly and that it's OS X firewall is not blocking the requests.
For File Sharing: System Preferences > Sharing > File Sharing
o Make sure that the folders on your external hard drive, that you want shared, are selected in the Shared Folders window.
o Make sure that you have, at least, Everyone = Read Only set in the Users window.
o Select Options..., and then, verify that you have "Share files and folders using AFP" is enabled for Mac clients, and "Share files and folders using SMB" is enabled for Windows clients.
For the OS X Firewall: System Preferences > Security > Firewall
o If "Allow all incoming connections" is enabled, verify that: "File Sharing (AFP, SMB)" is now displayed in the list.

  • Ipod will sync up once then says cannot read or write to disk.

Is this normal? The IPOD shows up in Itunes after the first sync but when I go and try to update the ipod again it says it cannot read or write to disk. Tech support says this is normal but it does not make any sense as the IPOD still shows up in Itunes.

the IPOd will sync up when I fiorst plug it in. the problem is when it is finished, Itunes says ipod update complete you can disconnect. I leave it connected, and if I try to update the ipod again after I download something or whatever into Itunes it comes back with the cannot read from or write to disk. I can unplug it and plug it back in and it work sfine. There is something with the software I guess that is not staying connected with the hardware after the first sync.
