Can't write to External HDD connected to AEBS

+This is a repost from the SL Discussion...hopefully someone here can help...+
I am logged in under my account, which is the Administrator Account. I am unable to write to Seagate 1 TB external HDD connected to AEBS base station.
Under "Get Info"->Sharing and Permissions it reads "You have custom Access" and then shows just one account, "everyone" and this is a "Read Only" account. The format of the External Drive is shown as "Appleshare" (actual drive is formatted as NTFS so my Dell PC can read/write, which is functioning perfectly).
I tried to change the "everyone" account to Read and Write but Mac 10.6.3 won't let me because "I don't have the necessary permissions".
So then I tried to add another account (clicking the "+" sign) but it again rejects me because the account "isn't a valid name" although I am using my account name.
I was able to read/write to this drive under Leopard but lost that function when I upgraded to 10.6.3. I can read the files on the drive and copy them to my iMac but I can't copy back to the drive. Is this a Finder problem?
How can I get the permissions changed on this external drive so I can read/write from my Admin account?

Okay, it is formatted as FAT32.
I checked under Airport Utility and there are (2) accounts that have permitted access, Dad (Read/Write) and Mom (Read Only). The drive is not corrupted as I can read/write from the Dell PC without any issue and I can "Read" from my iMac.
When I right click on the drive, "Get Info" and then check "Sharing/Permissions", there is only one account shown "everyone" (all small letters) with "Read" access. This account does not show up under "Airport Utility" so it is an account that Finder assigned.
My other two accounts, that are correctly shown under Airport Utility, are not shown in Finder. It seems like this is a Finder Problem and Finder (under Snow Leopard) won't let me access the drive.
So how can I change the Permissions in Finder? Even if Finder lets me add another account that can read/write, I'll be happy. But it won't let me add any accounts, it simply says "Invalid Account Name".
I'll try the direct hookup to the iMac as a last resort but this drive has all of my photos backed up on it so I don't want to mess around too much with it. I have photos on other drives as well but it is a big pain to reload from the other drives...it is around 300 Gb of photos.

  • Can you search an external hdd connected via airport extreme

I have my western digital 500gb harddrive connected to my airport extreme so I can use my HD wirelessly. I tried searching for files in my wireless harddrive through finder, but it doesn't seem to search it, only on my macbook itself. Is it possible to search the harddrive wirelessly?

    Smokerz,
    could you explain??
I spent over an hour with Apple Tech support and they said that Finder/Spotlight WILL NOT search a networked drive. However, I did find a bit of a work around:
    1. In Finder Preferences: General - Select check box - 'Always open folders in new window'
    2. Open up a Finder window
    3. Select Airport Extreme. (Left column, Shared, name of Airport base station)
    4. Select networked drive
    5. Double Click a folder in your network drive that you want to search (this opens new window)
    6. In the new window, type what you need in the search window (upper right hand corner).
Remember: The Finder window will default to the 'This Mac' in the search column (light grey line below the Toolbar)
    7. In the Search column, This Mac and Contents are selected in Dark Grey. You should see
Search: *This Mac* "folder name" Shared | Contents File Name
    8. Now select "folder name". This will search the contents of the selected folder and bypass your Mac.
If there is an easier way, could you please explain. TIA
    Narvon
PS - If you try to select your networked drive in a new window as in step 5, this still won't work. You can only select specific folders within the drive. Lastly, you can move all your folders and files to 1 folder, however, this increases the search time (My network drive is 320GB in size and a search for 1 known file took just over 3 minutes).

  • I am trying to get an answer to whether or not I can successfully use Time Machine with an external HDD connected to an airport extreme?  Some forums say yes, some say no.

I am trying to get an answer to whether or not I can successfuly use Time Machine with an external HDD connected to an airport extreme.  Some forums say yes, some say no.  I'm also curious about formatting the hard drive to work both on my wife's MacBook Pro and my PC.  Any help would definitely be appreciated.

You may be going on a recollection, that I share, that at one time Apple stated this would be possible:
In fact, Apple’s Time Machine Web page touted this very capability as recently as last Tuesday, as you can see from Google’s October 16 cache of the page
Effortless meets wireless. With a hard disk connected to your AirPort Extreme Base Station, all the Macs in your house can use Time Machine to back up wirelessly. Simply select your AirPort Disk as the backup disk for each computer and the whole family can enjoy the benefits of Time Machine.
But if you look at the current Time Machine page on Apple’s Web site, that text is nowhere to be found.
That was a long time ago, it has never been officially implemented, and at present they specifically say it cannot be done.
In summary, it may work, but probably won't, and even if it does it may not be reliable.

Why i can't find the external HDD plugged to airport extreme. i already format it with mac OS extended (journaled).
Does only certain branch of HDD can be connected to aireport extreme?
I collect some information and i knew i have to partiion the HDD into Mac OS extended (journaled),
and i did so. Still the usb HDD cannot be found.
The other question is, can i partition the HDD into two sections, one of it is Mac OS extended(journaled) while the other is Fat32?
I want to share Fat32 section with another PC with windows system.
Thanks a lot if you have any suggestions.

I had tried to set up the connection via usinb a powered usb hub as the bridge between external HDD and the airport extreme. i still cannot found the HDD in the "airport utilities".
    This is my setting.
    1. Set airport extreme  as "sharing-single-ip" mode. The wireless network functions correctly.
    2. Connect external HDD to MBA. Partition it into single-partition with Mac OS extended (journaled).
    3. The HDD can be found if i plugged it directly to my MBA.
    4. Connect a powered usb hub to airport extreme.
    5. Connect external HDD to the powered usb hub.

         a. Select "airport extreme" in the sidebar.
         b. Change the "Disks" sheet.
    7. Cannot find an external Disk
    Is there any problem here?

  • Access USB external HDD connected to Airport Extreme

    Hi.
Today I configured "Back to my Mac" and I'm having a little issue with the external HDD that is connected to the Airport.
Let me explain the configuration: Airport Extreme (latest version) configured with Back to My Mac option, with an external HDD connected using USB port (The HDD is externanly powered). iMac computer with OSX Mavericks wireless connected, configured with iCloud Account and Back to My Mac with screen sharing).
I can access the shared screen and control the iMac from my Macbook Air outside my home network.
The issue is when I try to access the "network HDD" because I can connect using the right user but Finder windows never shows the HDD content. I have to disconect and reconnect to the external HDD to be able to see the files (If I have 3 windows and want to access the HDD on each of the 3 windows, I have to disconnect and reconnect 3 times).
    Question:
There is any way to access the external HDD and be able to see its content using the configuration mentioned? The disconnect and reconnect procedure for each window is normal? There is a better configuration I can apply?. Just as information, from my MacBook Im able to see perfect the HDD content from outside my home network.
I know the question is a little bit confusing, but if you need any additional info please let me know.
    Thank you.

  • Smart folder not searching external HDD connected to Airport Extreme

I have bunch of movie files (mp4 format) on external HDD connected to the new Airport Extreme station. When I create a smart folder on either one of the machines on my local network, the smart folder would not search at all through the HDD connected to the Airport Extreme.
I have another HDD connected directly to my PowerMacG5Quad and smart folders successfuly searches through that drive.
However, when I ask for any type of search (i.e. any kind of files) located on a networked external HDD, smart folders acts is if the networked drive is not even there.
Obviously, my purpose here is to have the difference machines access (RSS style) all the movies files located on the networked HDD.
Is it some permission in Airport Extreme?

  • Unable to view folders of a usb external drive connected to AEBS

My Macbook can see the External Drive connected to AEBS but unable to browse the folders. When I click the external drive to view the folders the beach ball remain spinning for a long time and then gives an error unable to connect.  My MacBook Pro can see all the external drive files with no problem.

How is that drive formatted?  It needs to be Mac OS Extended (Journaled) or FAT32 for the AirPort Extreme to be able to read the disk correctly.
In most cases, you will also need to use a powered USB hub with the AirPort Extreme....even if the hard drive has its own power supply since the USB port on the AirPort Extreme is under powered.
My MacBook Pro can see all the external drive files with no problem.
Your Mac can read more types of drives than the AirPort Extreme.

  • Can't Read/Write to External HDD-Permissions Problem

I have external Seagate HDD, formatted as FAT32, connected to Airport Extreme Base Station. I am unable to Read/Write to this Drive because Finder says I "Don't have permissions" to do so.
Following are details that may be important:
    1. I was able to read/write to this drive under Leopard but lost the right under Snow Leopard, after upgrade to SL.
    2. In Airport Utility, I set up (2) accounts for the External HDD, "Dad" with "Read/Write" access and "Mom" with "Read" access only. I have Guest Account privileges set to "Read Only". It has been this way for (2) years.
    3. Under "Get Info" in Finder, the only account listed is "everyone" with "read" permission only (this is same as Guest Acount in Airport Utility). I am unable to add new accounts because I get error message "The account name is not valid" even though I am using the account name that I am logged in under.
    4. I can change the Permissions on the "everyone" account (in Finder) by changing the permissions on the "Guest Account" in Airport Utility. When I do this, "everyone" in Finder now has "read/write" access but my two accounts, "Dad" and "Mom still don't show up in Finder.
    5. I also upgraded internal HDD to 1Tb and used Restore from Time Machine. I hhad problems with the restore and did new install of Snow Leopard.
Any ideas on how to make Finder show the two accounts I have set up in Airport Utility?

My apologies for bumping this but I still don't have a solution...any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • Can I view media files stored on an external hdd connected to a wifi router

Hi there, been searching but most the discussions seem quite old. I have a wifi router with a usb port for connecting an external hdd to. My ps3 will see the hdd but can I also get my iPad/iPhone to view the media files store on the hdd. Are there apps I need or settings I need. I currently use air video to stream from my pc but I am about about to change my pc for a laptop which will not be connected to an external drive constantly. Which is why I want to connect my hdd to my router, plus save on electric to run my desktop constantly.
    So is it possible?
    What do I need?
I'm a bit of an idiot so any settings I may need would be gratefully received too lol
Its an o2 wireless box 4, 500gb external hdd currently ntfs file system. I do not have apple tv either.
Many thanks in advance for any help you can give

8player does it, haven't tried it for a full episode yet but seems stable, plug hdd into router and open 8player on your device, browse to router and attached hdd and play the file. avi and mp4 work no prob and there is a lite version if you want to try it out yourselves

  • Can I use my external hdd with OSX server

Hi i am thinking about using OSX server, but I dont have very much space on the computer I would b running it of of so I would store everything on my 4TB Wd external HDD. Is this posible, and how would I set it up to do that? Also, my external also has some backups from other computers on it and will I loose any of that? I would probably partition it so that 1TB of it has all the servers files and everything.
    Thanks,
    Ben

Yep you can use any connected drive for server storage, its under the settings tab called Service Data
No you wouldn't lose anything on the drive (assuming its Mac formatted) but clean partition would be a good idea

  • External HDD connect to my bourd..

    hi.
i would  like to know if i connect Ann external hdd to my MB (usb2?) can i get good performance? i want to use this HDD epically for games but not only.
or do you recommend me to buy another internal hdd?

USB is never fast enough to get good performance.
It's fast enough for backup and such, as USB can do about 40MB/s tops, where a harddisk can do about twice that speed on raw transfer if you forget the caching.

  • Can TC power an external HDD?

I'm buying a new external hard drive, and would like to buy one that's powered via the USB connection, not one with its own AC power adapter.
    a) Is the Time Capsule able to power an external HDD through the USB port?
    b) If yes, are there any limitations to how big a size or how fast (rpm) the disc can be before it's too much for the TC to handle?
    Thanks.

Yes. Apple's technical specs for the Time Capsule don't mention current capacity of the USB port, but I have an external drive connected to my Time Capsule. On a PowerBook G4 that same drive required a "Y" USB cable to provide the drive enough power.

I wouldn't expect size or speed to be a problem.

  • Can't write to mounted HDD after updates. (SOLVED)

Im using XFCE as my DE.
I can no longer write to mounted HDD. Neither the 2nd HDD in my computer or my USB backup drive. I can't write to them as root either?!
I can read them just fine, even drag files from them but nothing at all will write to them.
    Any ideas??

of course there is an easy way, however, it entails erasing all data on the drive. do you have access to a spare, "temporary", drive ?
