Can't write to files on another mac?

Hi,
I know this is a very basic question and I'm going to sound a dummy but I just can't seem to figure it out!
I am using a mac book and want to be able to access and save to files held on an imac.
The computers are networked, file sharing is set up on the imac, I am a user on the imac with permission to read and write, I can print to a printer attached to the imac, I can see the files on the imac and open them from my macbook but the only thing I can't seem to do is save a file after I've changed it. It just says I don't have permissions.
However, on the imac it says I do have permissions!
Sorry, I know this is very basic stuff but I'm getting nowhere fast and any help would be much appreciated!!
Thanks
Sandra

G'day Sandra,
Kenichi is on the money with this one.
On each Mac, your username is allocated to a numeric user id starting with number 501 for the first user you create on that computer. The second account your create is user 502 and so on. This user id determines the access permissions to every file.
Thus, you could have an account on your iMac named sandra (with user id 501), and an account on your MacBook named sandra (with user id 502, because another account was created first). When you share files, even though you have the same username, you are NOT the same owner from the files perspective, and thus you do not have full permissions over the file!
To get around this from your MacBook, you need to use the "connect as" option for your iMac. Then you enter your iMacs account username and password (and save it). You will then have full access to the files on that computer - although you will still get access errors when you copy them from your iMac to your MacBook.
To fix this, you simply "Get Info" on the file, and give yourself read/write permission.
Or.. if you have the time and patience.. and don't want to go through the hassle every time you copy a file... you can set things up so that every account on every computer is created in the same order, with the same username and password.....
(There are other ways to fix this - using Access Control Lists - but I will leave it at that for now).
Cheers,
Rodney

My mac mini will not boot the OS proserly, it goes to a screen that tells me that some root folder can not be found.
The install CD works and I can boot to it. The disk utility reports no problems, all disk repairs done and OK.
The computer still will not boot to the OS.

  • How can I share a file with another mac computer?

I would like to send a file to my girlfriends computer. A macbook pro. I have a macbook. Can you tell me how to do this? Is it with file sharing, or blue tooth or something else. I is a logic .aif file.
    Thanks

    Hi,
There does seem to be a presumption in the other reply that your girlfriend is living with you.
A File transfer via Bonjour would then work.
Also the File Sharing in System Preferences > Sharing would cause her computer to show up on your Finder's side bar as a Share.
With iChat if you both have AIM Login names you could still do File Transfers.
(It is slightly more complicated if you have Jabber ID logged in alothough not impossible).

  • How can I delete the files .DS_store in Mac OS Yosemite?

How can I delete the files .DS_store in Mac OS Yosemite?

The .DS_Store file is normal. It holds certain settings related to the folder it is found in. Removing these files is futile, as they will come back, as you have observed.
If you are seeing them on your Mac, that means you have changed settings so that your Mac is showing invisible files in the Finder. To reverse that, run the following command in the Terminal:
    defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles NO
This will hide them, and any other invisible files, from view.
If you are seeing them on a Windows machine, just ignore them. They're not doing any harm.
If you found a Terminal command that is supposed to stop them from being created, I would be extremely skeptical as to the wisdom of running it.

When you use Migration Assitant it creates another user account and puts your files there. Please log out of your normal account and log into the new account. Had you use Setup Assistant when it asked if you were migrating that would not have occured. You have a couple of options, combine the two accounts (not recommended) or start over, use Setup Assistant and have everything in one user account. Here is a link to Pondin's guide for Lion Setup Assistant tips however if you want to combine the two accounts he has addressed that in

  • Can I transfer music files from my mac to my new pc?

I was wondering if there is any way I can transfer my iPod files from my mac unto my pc (without deleeting them). How do I do this and can someone provide me the link to the original (4 GB) iPod Mini software like on the disk, because I seem to have lost mine.

Probably the easiest way to use an iPod on both Mac and Windows computers is to format the iPod (using iPod Updater) using the PC. This will force your iPod to use the Windows file system (FAT32) which both the Mac and PC can read from and write to without the help of additional software. Of course then all your software updates for the iPod will have to be done on Windows. If you need to use a Mac (HFS+) formatted iPod on a Windows PC, you'll need to install some 3rd party software such as XPlay 2.0 (which you can get from MediaFour Software). This will enable your Windows PC to read a Mac-formatted iPod.
However, please be aware that Apple does not officially support cross platform use.
The iPod updater software is here.

  • Can I save a file to the Mac HD and, automatically, also save it to Dropbox?, Can I save a file to the Mac HD and, automatically, also save it to Dropbox?

    Hi everyone,
Can I save a file to the Mac HD and, automatically, also save it to Dropbox (or another cloud-based storage)?
What I would like to do is to have my Mac HD duplicated in the Cloud?
    Is this possible?
    Many thanks!
    Bryan

    Dear dwb
    Many thanks for responding!
I am not that technical and I would be grateful if you could continue to help, please.
On the first bit - the Dropbox folder - this I understand - I have been using Dropbox for a number of months and it is fine.
The linking folders outside Dropbox does sound like it is what I would like to do but I don't know how to do it!
    May I give an example?
If I have a folder on my Mac HD in Documents entitled "Tax" (nightmare!!) and in the folder I have some subfolders (e.g. 2011, 2012 and 2013) and in the subfolders I have files such as "Propeties", "Travel Days", "Interest", etc.
I would like to duplicate this folder (Tax) and all of its subfolders and files in Dropbox and AUTOMATICALLY update the Dropbox files everytime I update the file on the HD.
Is this possible with Symlink?  And if so, how do I do it?
    I really appreciate your help!!
    Many thanks,
    Bryan

How can I transmit PDF files from my Mac to my iPad, How can I transmit PDF files from my Mac to my iPad

Yes you can definitely do this. You'll need an app on the iPad that handles PDF viewing and editing. There are many around - two of the best I've seen are GoodReader and PDF Expert.
In iTunes when you iPad is connected to your PC, go to the Apps tab and scroll down and you'll see the File Sharing section. You can drag files to there to share them to your iPad.
You could also look at online file sync services like PDF to ePub Maker if you prefer not to have to connect your iPad to a PC

The answer depends on the type of video files you want to convert.  If they are DRM protected commercial videos, no help can be given here.  Google.

  • HT204382 how can I transfer wma files to my mac?

how can I transfer wma files to my mac?

A Macintosh Classic (http://support.apple.com/kb/sp198) has a SCSI hard drive. Even though the hard drive can be removed and placed in an external SCSI enclosure, it is not going to be easy to find a way of connecting it to a modern Mac. That would normally require a USB-to-SCSI adapter, which may or may not be supported under the latest operating system versions.
The easiest method of transferring files from a Macintosh Classic may be via an external USB floppy drive connected to the modern Mac. 1.44 MB Mac-formatted floppy disks can be used for such transfers (not 800K).
A SCSI Zip (100) drive could in principle be connected to the SCSI port of the Macintosh Classic. The Zip disk could then be moved to a USB Zip (100) drive connected to a modern computer.
The Macintosh Classic does not have built-in Ethernet, nor a slot for an Ethernet card (certain other "classic" Macintosh computers do have the ability to hold an Ethernet card). There are some external solutions (such as SCSI-to-Ethernet adapters), but with limitations. For a networking overview, the http://www.applefool.com/se30/ web page could perhaps be of interest.
It is also possible to arrange a null-modem connection between a Macintosh Classic and a modern computer, providing that a USB-to-serial adapter is attached to the latter (appropriate terminal emulation programs are needed on both sides).

  • Can't upload any files from my mac to the Internet

I am new to Macbook, and this obviously never happened before
    So, the problem is:
I can't upload any files from my Mac anywhere (Facebook, Instagram, etc)
    I can't attach files to e-mails.
any files that are on my desktop, folders - they just turn in grey and I can't choose them.
The only way I can do it is by going to "ALL FILES" where I have to search through all the files that are on my Mac
Keep in mind that this is a glitch, because earlier it was all fine and normal
To see what I mean I am uploading a skreen shot of attemp of uploading files to Fb.
Can anybody help? Can it be some sort of virus?

Okay I had the same problem but I figured it out.  When you go to choose file, all the links are greyed out.  Use two fingers simulatiously and click down on the file you want, then choose "quick look" from the option menu.  This will open a preview of your document and make the open button usable.  Close the preview, and then select the open button.
The site I was trying to use says it only supports IE, so maybe that is what causes the problem.
    Hope it works for you!
