Can the adjustment brush be set to mask for highlights, mid tones, or shadows individually?

I am a recent convert from Apple Aperture, where one can brush adjustment masks onto an images highlights, mid tones, or shadows individually.  Can this be done in Lightroom?  It makes adjustments around trees, for instance, so easy to do precisely...
Thanks!

The answer to your question is:
No. (masking based on specified tonal range(s) is not supported).
And, yes - auto-masking brush is tone-sensitive and will mask, to some extent, based on tone (also color, I think, and who knows what else.. - it doesn't work very well in my opinion).
If this does not sufficiently answer your question, then perhaps you need to elaborate and clarify the question.

  • How can the adjustment brushes in lightroom 3 be fixed?

I have no idea how this works.  The adjustment brush in lightroom 3 has stopped working.  Using a mac.  Customer support said if I pay $39 they might be able to fix the problem, but its better to ask on the forums.  Any suggestions on how to fix this?

A quick guess or two, since you haven't really explained the symptoms.
Are your Flow and Density sliders set to something reasonable?
Try hitting the H (for hide) key.
Is the Size slider set to something large enough?
    I'll only charge you $25.

  • Continual problem with the Adjustment brush in both Lightroom 3 and Lightroom 4

The Adjustment brush in both Lightroom 3 and Lightroom 4 continually stops functioning correctly - that is any adjustment made using the sliders in the Adjustment Brush panel does not make an adjustment on the image.      Normally I would go to Library / Preferences [on my iMac OSX 10.6.8], remove the com.adobe.Lightroom3.plist file and restart Lightroom.     However I have gone to Library/Preferences and there is no listing of any Lightroom 3 plist files, nor for that matter any adobe Photoshop CS5 plist files or any adobe Lightroom 4 plist files.      I have tried restarting the iMac but to no avail - no help at all!      I have no idea how to remedy the situation as I have no idea where the plist files have gone!!!
Incidentally I have a new iMac 27" OSX 10.8 - same problem with the Adjustment Brush there, but so far the plist files haven't disappeared into the ether somewhere!
    Help would be appreciated  ...
    Many thanks

    Hi Jussi
I tried changing to the B brush set, and the Adjustment Brush worked OK in there for a while - but now I have the same problem with the B brush set too.     It appears to happen instantly - one minute they're working, the next minute they're not!!         For example, I was adjusting Brightening using the Adjustment Brush and I literally made an adjustment on one image, then went back into the same image seconds later to make a further Brightening adjustment and the brush wasn't working - well, that is, not unless I pushed the slider to something like 160 and then I got minimal adjustment!!!       I am becoming increasingly frustrated  ..   I have literally worked for months with no problems, now it's almost every day!!

  • Lightroom 4.3 quiting when using the adjustment brush

Whenever I use the adjustment Brush in Lightroom 4.3 for Mac lightroom quits I have had no issues with any previous versions, back to lightroom 3. Is anyone else having this issue?

I suppose so. But the thing is that 4.2 runs just fine.
    But here you go:
Processor  2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory  4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics  NVIDIA GeForce 9400M 256 MB
A bit oldish but I think it's fine (is that what you meant by set up? cuz I'm not entirely sure)
I used the CD to install the first version 4.1 and just followed the instructions and that's what I do every time there's an update/upgrade.
The catalog was suggested by the instructions to be put in the pictures file, so I did. and the images are there too. The other "technical" files that are related to how the software operates are located in the main Preferences folder (where all similar folders from other software are normally located"
Thank you so much for taking the time to look at it. Do let me know if you have any other questions
    Cheers

  • How do I use the adjustment brush to mask and not turn my item green?

I have shot some products for my web site.  I need completely white backgrounds. I have tried to mask the product and lighten the whites, but when I click done, my product has turned very green.
Why?  How do you use the brush?  Also, where is the invert to make this easier on me?
Kind of urgent, I need to get these items on my site already.
I know the answer is simple... I just don't know what it is.
    Thanks

Have you tried without the adjustment brush, by simply adjusting white balance from the basic tab in develop?
Click on the eye dropper tool and then click on a neutral gray color. Use the background if it is neutral rather than white. You may need to keep selecting the eye dropper to click in a few different places for best results.
If you decide to use the adjustment brush you can show or hide the mask. Uncheck the mask when you have finished painting; then use the sliders, starting with tint and temperature.

I think it means "the sliders are all 0 so painting adjustments with this brush won't change anything."  In other words, move one of the sliders to a non-zero position, for example Exposure from 0 to 1.0, and then see what happens.  You can edit the brush and change it to do something other than Exposure +1.

In Camera raw setting of CS6, using the adjustment brush, the new, add or erase buttons do not work. Please advise.

What operating system are you using?
Which version of camera raw do you have in photoshop cs6?
After you select the Adjustment Brush, the New button should already be enabled.
Then after you draw on an area of the image, the Add button should be enabled, with the option to choose either of the other two buttons; New or Erase
    Could you post a screenshot?
Maybe all the adjustment values are set to zero?
(at least one needs to have a value other than zero)

Had you specified you're on Windows, I wouldn't even have replied. I don't do windows.
Yes, it has been a waste of time for both you and me.
You don't even know how to ask a question properly and you want me to read the FAQs?  Hah!
No one will take your word for "ACR latest version", and "PS CC latest VersionVersion [sic]", as many users believe they are fully updated when they are not. Exact version numbers are needed.
8 GB is considered the realistic minimum to run Photoshop CC, but it's far from optimal—on any platform.  There are other factors that can be at play and which you don't specify, such as the space available on each of your hard drives, whether you have a physically separate, dedicated hard drive for Photoshop's scratch drive, what video card you have and how much VRAM does it have, what your graphics settings are in Photoshop's Preferences > Performance, etc.
That's why I had indicated a link for you to read:
Please read this FAQ for advice on how to ask your questions correctly for quicker and better answers:

If you read that link in its entirety and provide the pertinent information, maybe some of the Windows experts will be able to help you out.
    Now I'm out of here.

  • In Camera RAW when I use the adjustment brush, erase, then go back to the brush I can't adjust the DENSITY. I have to use the brush, then delete it, then the density is available. Thanks for any help!

I am using ACR 8.6 hosted by Photoshop CC 2014.2.0 with Windows 7 Pro SP1, and am not seeing any issue with Adjustment Brush sliders.
I am opening a new image in ACR and click the Adjustment Brush toolbar icon, then adjust the Exposure slider up then making some strokes, then click Erase, and remove some parts of the strokes, then click Add, and can make more strokes as well as adjust all the sliders, including Density.

  • Why can't the adjustment brush add color to white/highlights?

I recently tried to use the adjustment brush to add som color to white/highlights, without success . I have learned that the color chosen for the adjustment brush will mix with the underlaying colors. The surrounding areas were colored as expected, however apperently no effect on the white/blown highlights. Am I doing anything wrong?

I did this in LR. There's no detail at all in the window with or without Recovery set to 100.Here Recovery is set to 0.

  • Can not find the Skin Soften option with the adjustment brush 2.0

When I first installed 2.0 I had an option for skin softening with the adjustment brush. Now it's gone. Does everyone using Lightroom 2.0 have skin soften with the adjustment brush?

In Develop press K for Adjustment Brush (or click the Brush Icon). The it appears in the drop down menu next to Effect: that defaults to Exposure and has a small set of up and down arrows to the right of it. Soften Skin is last after a divider. It also appears (????) there for Graduated Filter (M).

    Hi dear,
    it's funny, real funny.
I think the programmes have diffrent sound system from the normal calls system.
All you need to do is to turn the sound up from the bottom in the phone side in the time you're making or recieving the call.
    you'll hear the sound.
    I hope that would help.
    All the best

  • Spot Removal tool should be an extension of the Adjustment Brush

I am glad that LR is taking steps in the right direction to improve the Spot Removal tool with the new Healing Brush feature. However, I agree with others that the interface needs improvement. Though I am probably not the first, I feel I have the solution:
Integrate the Spot Removal tool into the Ajustment Brush tool. Here's why.
I think an improved interface for the Spot Removal brush tool (Q) already mostly exists in the in the form of the Adjustment Brush (K), and indeed the two tools should share the best of their respective features and controls. The current Adjustment Brush has most of the features we are looking for in the Healing Brush:
Pre-brushing Size of brush (already implemented in the Spot Removal tool)
    Pre-brushing Feathering control
Pre-brushing Flow/Density control (already implemented in the Spot Removal tool as Opacity)
Partial erasure of selected brush stroke masks, while maintaining the above brush controls (by holding the ALT key in Windows, aided by making the Mask Overlay visible (O))
Pre- and Post-brushing adjustments of each Spot Removal brushstroke for White Balance, Tone (Exposure, Contrast, Saturation, etc), Sharpness, etc.
Adding the above features would be an incredibly useful approach to the Spot Healing tool, and would be a natural extension of the interface we already are familiar with. Both the Adjustment Brush and Spot Removal tools could be further improved by these additional features:
Post-brushing Size of circular brush (already implemented in the classic Spot Removal tool)
Post-brushing Size of painted brushstroke (supposedly already newly implemented in the LR5 Beta Spot Removal tool, though I haven't been able to get it to work on mine)
    Post-brushing Feathering control
Post-brushing repositiong of painted brushstroke (already implemented in the classic Spot Removal tool)
In summary, the Spot Removal tool should really be an extension of the Adjustment Brush. They should live in the same control panel (with a Clone or Heal ON/OFF toggle switch). The Adjustment Brush could benefit a bit from the addition of a couple of the existing post-brushing features of the Spot Removal tool.
The two tools are really one tool, they just don't know it yet. Let's introduce them to itself.

A few weeks ago, I posted the silly graphic above. It is a Venn diagram of my interpretation of Lightroom 5 Beta's three main local adjustment tools' strengths, weaknessess, and overlapping powers. Each tool - the Adjustment Brush, the Spot Repair & Advanced Healing Brush, and the Graduated & Radial Filter - has one or more discreete powers or traits. The three tools each overlap a neighboring tool in an important aspect (e.g. the Adjustment Brush and the Advanced Healing Brush can each be used to paint any freehand shape to be adjusted). By default, the descreet "Super Power" of one tool is a "Super Weakness" of each of the other two, which lacks that power (e.g. the user can make additions or partial erasures to any mask overlay with the Adjustment Brush, but neither the Advanced Healing Brush nor The Radial Filter has this power).
In the very center of the diagram is the overlap of all three of the local adjustment tools. In this triple-overlapped zone, there is currently no existing tool. I theorize that there could be a special sort of new local adjustment tool, which combines all of the powers (and none of the weaknesses) of the individual tools of which it is composed. Inspired by the notion of cartoon supeheroes teaming up to combine their powers, I gave it the tongue-in-cheek name "Super Friends Awesomesauce Brush". However, my vision for such a tool is completely serious. Basically, I envision it as an "Advanced Adjustment Brush"
    For example:
Paint a shape on the image with a feathered brush. (A transparent colored mask overlay guides the user in the same way that the traditional Adjustment Brush does, as lollololli correctly suggests above as an easier way to paint a selection.)
Pick up that brushstroke with the mosue and place it in another part of the image.
Enlarge or reduce the overall size of the brushstroke with the Size slider.
Increase or decrease the overall feathering of that brushstroke's edges with the Feather slider.
Erase with the freehand erasure brush the portions of the mask that you don't wish to interact with the image.
Convert that brushstroke into a healing repair.
Resize that repair shape larger or smaller, and/or change its aspect and rotation as needed. (Transformations to the shape of the target brushstroke, not necessarily transformations of the shape of the healed or cloned sample pixels)
Increase or decrease the exposure or color temperature of the repair.
    Or,
Create a new Radial Filter on the image.
Adjust the exposure, white balance, Gaussian blur, etc. of the filter.
Subtract from that Radial Filter by erasing with a second erasing Radial Filter at the same pin-level
Add back to the Radial Filter with a freehand feathered brush as desired
    Or,
Maximise the brush size and minimize the feather setting and paint a solid mask overlay over the entire image.
Convert the mask overlay to a Clone repair - you have now created a second duplicate layer of the entire image on top of the original (BTW you can already do this step with the Advanced Healing Brush set to Clone and size 100 in LR5 Beta).
Subtract from that clone repair with a Radial Filter erasure to create a "hole" that shows the base image underneath.
Make independent exposure, white balance, and sharpening adjustments for both the base image (seen through the Radial Filter subtraction "hole") as well as the cloned top layer.
Reposition and resize the Radial Filter erasure as needed.
Add to and/or erase from either the Radial Filter erasure or the cloned top layer with radial filter shapes or freehand brushstrokes as desired.
I see this proposed Advanced Adjustment Brush as a very powerful localized adjustment tool. Although It really isn't a new tool at all, because it is almost completely based on the existing local adjustment tools. Additional enhancements (more geometric shapes such as polygons) could take its flexibility even further.

  • How do I get the adjustment brush to "paint" white?

How do I get the adjustment brush to "paint" white? I have tried the  color panel, but nothing works.

Make sure 'Auto Mask' is unchecked, Flow & Density = 100, and desired Feathering is set before painting. Set the Adjustment Brush to Exposure = +4. If you have LR5 right-click on the Adjustment Brush pin you just created and select Duplicate. If you have LR4 or earlier you'll probably need to manually paint the area twice with Exposure = +4.

  • LR2.7, cannot use the Adjustment Brush

I choose a photo, select Develop module and choose the Adjustment brush. Then select +2 exposure but in only see the Hand/Zoom tools when I move the mouse over the image. How do I get the brush tool to display?

The red is a mask so you can see where you have brushed
