Can the Extreme Base handle my cable speed

I have an Apple Extreme Base station connected to my cable modem. The cable service has been upgraded to 30 Mbps.
Before I order it can this Apple Airport handle and deliver to my PowerBook these speeds? The Airport is setup for g only.
My PowerBook is the 1.67 Aluminum running 10.4.3 with 1 gig ram.
I've read about the software Apple released also, Broadband Tuner. Not sure if this is something I should use also?
Thanks

Well since I posted, I upgraded my cable speed internet service to 30 Mbps downstream. Thought I would try it. If I connect the PowerBook directly to the cable modem via ethernet cable, I get the just about the full speed. 27-29 Mbps. And downloads are incredible coming in at around 3.3 - 4.0 MB/sec.
But when the cable modem is plugged into the Aiport and I use the PowerBook wirelessly, I lose half my speed if lucky. Sometimes it's 9.3 Mbps or at most 11Mbps wirelessly. And downloads come in at 1.1 -1.2 MB/sec.
Is Apple Wireless hardware not capable of broadcasting these highspeed connections? Or is it all wireless hardware is not up to the task yet? I thought Extreme was up to this task?
Nothing can be done to get the full speed wirelessly?

  • Can Airport Extreme Base Station 802.11g Connect To Park's Free WiFi?

The RV resort where I'm staying has free WiFi for Internet connections. It shows up on my iBook's Airport list of possible networks in the menu bar, along with my own local network which is an older Airport Extreme Base Station (white dome 802.11g) which has my HP printer plugged into it via an ethernet cable.
However, when I am connected to the park's WiFi via the laptop's Airport network choices, I am NOT connected to my AEBS, and therefore cannot print to the printer wirelesslessly. Is there a way for the AEBS to make the connection to the park's WiFi so I can use both Internet and printer from my iBook G4 without having to switch from one network to use the other?

Sorry, but no. You cannot connect your iBook's AirPort to more than one wireless network at a time. Since it will be highly unlikely that you will be able to create a Wireless Distribution System (WDS) between your RV resort's Wi-Fi and the 802.11g AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS), you won't be able to extend it to meet your needs.

  • How can the Extreme have two IPs on one computer?

My computer or the Apple Extreme Base Station (AEBS) started having a problem recently while two other computers are still working fine!?
This network setup (described further below) was running fine for a month before one computer started getting unhappy.
    PROBLEM SYMPTOMS:
The one computer can not get on the Internet. I checked the IP of the computer with the problem and it is 10.0.1.2 which was assigned by the AEBS. Subnets on everything involved are all 255.255.255.0. I tried to ping the router but could not reach it at 10.0.1.1 where it should be.
I bring up the Aipport Admin Utility and it lists the router at 254.128.0.0 !? I try to configure the router and it gets an error saying it can't connect. If I click the "Other" button and manually enter 10.0.1.1 to configure the router that works fine!
Two other computers (Win XP Pro and Windows 2000) are plugged into the same switch and they get to the router just fine.
    Computer with a problem:
Windows XP Pro with SP 2 and all the latest security updates.
I'm running the Airport Admin Utility for Windows version 4.1.
Apple Extreme was purchased two months ago. Running Version 5.7.
    SYSTEM SETUP:
The AEBS is set up to dial out (bummer but it's the option at this location) for Internet access. The WAN ethernet port is empty. The LAN ethernet port is connected to a Linksys 5 port switch - I don't have the version number right now but it was purchased 2 months ago.
The switch connects by ethernet cable to the XP Pro system that is having the problem and to the Windows 2000 system that is fine. A XP Pro notebook connects to the AEBS wirelessly without problem. Another notebook connects via cable to the switch or via wireless to the AEBS without problem.
The Airport Extreme is running version 5.7.
    THINGS I'VE TRIED
    Turning off all firewall software.
Uninstalling the Airport Admin Utility and reinstalling.
Removing the switch and going straight from the problem computer to the AEBS. No good.
Reseting the AEBS to factory settings and reconfiguring it.
    Rebooting the XP problem computer.
Repairing the IP on the XP problem computer.
    Resetting the switch.
Using different ports on the switch.
Do any of your rocket scientists have any suggestions?

Oops...I moved this to the Extreme forum since it has nothing to do with the Express

  • Using Airport Extreme Base Station with Cable Modem

    Hi everyone,
I have just bought an Airport Extreme Base Station. I connected it to my cable modem (Surfboard 3100) through the WAN port and my iMac G4 is connected to it through the Ethernet port. Installed the Airport Utility, and configured the base station with the normal settings of DHCP for Internet and DHCP for internal network.
After restarting the base station, my Internet connection from the iMac through the base station is very slow and most of the time will time-out. My Internet connection through my PowerBook G4 using wireless through the base station is ok though.
My question is, is there some setting which I should set for the Ethernet portion of the base station to make my wired connections to the Internet work?
Thanks in advance for any help!
    regards,
    Weiming
    iMac G4   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

    Hi,
My iMac G4 does not have an Airport card. I did not physically restarted the base station, its part of the sequence when we update the configuration, that the base station will restart on its own.
    regards,

  • Can the iPhone 5 handle upto 60mb broadband speeds?

Hi I have an iPhone 5. My broadband speed is at around 42mb. On my laptop I receive full 60 mb. I was told by virgin media that iPhones can not handle this sort of speed due to their wifi adaptor not being able to cope. Can somebody please give me a bit of advice wether this is correct or not.
    Many thanks :)

  • Time Machine doesn't see the WD Hard drive attached to the Extreme Base Sta

All of a sudden I can't get Time Machine to recognize the drive that's been attached to the Base Station.
It doesn't show up in Browse other time machine disks or, when I go to choose a back up disk.
    What's going on?

Try connecting it directly to your Mac. If it still doesn't appear, see if Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder) can see it. If not, and it has a separate power supply, that may be the problem. Otherwise, you need to go disk shopping.
If the Mac does see it when directly-attached (don't try to do anything with it), then the problem must be in the AEBS, communications, security, or network. For that, you may do better in the Airport and Time Capsule forums, hiding in the +Digital Life Section+ at: http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=140

  • Can the File Adapter handle Multiple Record Layouts in COBOL?

I am trying to parse flat files that have a record type field in the first four characters on each record. As a test I tried to use the following record definitions:
    01 CONTRACT-HEADER.
    05 RECORD-TYPE PIC X(4).
    05 TRANSACTION-TYPE PIC X.
    05 CONTRACT-NUMBER PIC X(32).
    05 CONTRACT-RELEASE-NBR PIC X(30).
    05 CONTRACT-FILLER PIC X(2025).
    01 CONTRACT-LINEITEM.
    05 RECORD-TYPE PIC X(4).
    05 TRANSACTION-TYPE PIC X.
    05 LINE-FILLER PIC X(1664).
I also tried smaller records with simple test data. When I press the "test" button in the native file adapter the XML is never generated if I have more than one record type as above. Suppose that the contract-header record type always has the string "X001" in it, while the contract-lineitem always has "X015" in the record-type. I chose Us-ascii and chose $eol as a delimiter. The file on my windows computer has carriage return line feed after each record. I know that the fixed length converter works, but because the records really have 50 fields on each record type and are long, I don't think I can actually use that one in one sitting. Has anyone ever gotten two different record lenght cobol definitions to work? Do I have to hand edit the XML to specify the delimiter? I don't see any delimter specified in the generated XML before I attempt the test.

    Rahul,
I recommned you should use "|" as "," can be embedded in a text string. I guess you can pass a directive to use to deliver "|" delimited file :). If you want to handle both then you might have to write a shell script or bat to pass delimiter as an argument which will edit and replace your control file.

No gizmo needed... the supplied adapter (transformer) will work with worldwide voltages.  See the small print on the adapter.  You may need a plug adapter though.

  • How many amps can the fan header handle?

I'm installing a Xpower big bang motherboard in a Silverstone FT02 case.  The case uses 3 180mm fans rated at 12v .45 amps each.  Does anyone know what the fan headers are rated at?

1A maximum for the whole circuit, which means that this:

The case uses 3 180mm fans rated at 12v .45 amps each.
    ... may be too much current load (3 x .45A = 1.35A).

  • Can I use Base Station with Extreme Card?

    Hi,
I was thinking of updating my iBook to a new one with an Extreme Card. I have the snow Base station that I am currently using with my G3 iBook. I know the G3 iBook with old Airport card would work on the Extreme Base Station but what about the other way around. Can I use the old Airport Card with a new Extreme Base Station? I would hate to have to spend the money on a new base station. I do understand the speed would be slightly slower than if both the base station and the card were extreme. Thanks.
    Thom

I know the G3 iBook with old Airport card would work on the Extreme Base Station...
Can I use the old Airport Card with a new Extreme Base Station?
As you state in your first statement, yes a Mac using an original AirPort card can connect to an AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS).
I do understand the speed would be slightly slower than if both the base station and the card were extreme.
Since you will be using an 802.11b card, the speed will be the same 802.11b speed that you are getting now.

  • Can Time Machine backup USB Drive connected to Airport Extreme Base Station

I need a new N based wireless router. I would prefer to get just the $179 Base Station and not the $299 Time Capsule. I already have a nice external USB 500GB drive that I would connect to the AEBS. So, once I have this new wireless router/base station installed at home and I have the external USB drive connected to it, can my new Macbook Air with a USB connected 400GB drive be used to backup what is on the Macbook Air and also backup the 500GB USB drive info that is connected to the extreme base station?
    Thanks

I found this when searching Apple's web site but it is old, October 2007, and said it could not be done. Has this changed since then?
    Here is what I found.
Mac OS X 10.5: Time Machine doesn't back up to AirPort Disks
    * Last Modified on: October 26, 2007
    * Article: 306833
Time Machine in Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard can be used to back up to many kinds of Mac OS Extended-formatted drives, but it does not support AirPort Extreme's AirPort Disk feature.
Time Machine can back up to another Mac running Leopard with Personal File Sharing, or to a Leopard Server volume, or an Xsan storage device.

  • Can I extend a network with an AirPort Extreme Base Station Rather than with an Express?

Topic title pretty well sums up the question.
I have a TimeCapsule Base Station with two Expresses for extending the network through the house.
We're doing a 3 room addition, and there is not a convenient place to put an Express in a wall outlet in the middle room of the addition, but there's a perfect place to put an Extreme on top of a piece of furniture.
So, can the Extreme act as an "extender" only, in lieu of using an Express?

    Hiya.
You can absolutely extend a network with an Extreme. I've got a 5th gen. Extreme extending a network created with a 3rd gen. Time Capsule. On the Extreme, you'll have the option to allow (or not) WiFi clients. I recommend having all units updated to the current firmware (7.6.1 as of this writing). Note that extending doesn't work in daisy-chain fashion, meaning that your Expresses or Extremes will each connect to and extend from the TC. As such, you'll want the TC to be in as central a location as possible to offer the best coverage.

  • How can I share files and itunes through extreme base station ??

How can I share files and itunes music through the extreme base station. as well as locate and place files onto the external hard drive that is connected to the X.B.S. from my or other computers hooked up to it ??
thank you in advance for your attention on this matter.

Which AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) are you discussing? The new square 802.11b/g/n AEBS supports the direct connection of USB hard drives. The previous round 802.11b/g AEBS does not have that capability. I have a feeling that you are asking about the new one but this is the discussion area for the old one.
The new square 802.11b/g/n AEBS allows you to share files directly from the connected USB drive. It doesn't matter what the files are so you can store your iTunes library there and get access wirelessly.
The round 802.11b/g AEBS doesn't have this ability.
