Can the Finder "Kind" column text be configured?

When a Finder folder window is in List-View, a description of each file item is given in the column labeled "Kind."  Is this text description configurable someplace, or is this text somehow hard-coded into the Finder?  If it is configurable somehow (and I realize that it would not be a normal user requirement to do this, at least for most users), how would these descriptions be changed or configured?
Thanks for any information on this.

What would I want the Finder to display as the "kind"?
The short answer is: anything that I want!
For example, for the file extensions (these are just examples):
file-extrension          Finder-kind-description
JPG                        "Mickey Mouse"
TXT                         "Donald Duck"
PNG                         "Superman"
I think that should clear up what I would like to do?
My original question again is: Can the Finder be configured somehow to put in arbitrary text descriptions for the kind of file it is listing?
A derivative question might he: can new Finder descriptions for new file types be added somehow?
This would be somewhat akin to providing customized descriptions in UNIX for the "file" (and related) commands by
supplying customized "magic" files (located in certain places depending on the utility or middleware facility being used).
The answer so far is that these "kind" descriptions are basically hardcoded into the Finder someplace
deeply within the compiled code, and cannot be changed by just changing some file or database someplace.
Is there a better answer than this?  I would have originally assumed so; that it could be customized with some sort of database (file or otherwise) change, but who knows, maybe Apple did hard-code these descriptions into the Finder program after all.

  • Is there any way to set default column widths in the Finder's Column view

When my Finder windows open in column view, all the columns are always VERY wide. I have to then spend time resizing them to a managable width. Is there any way to set default column widths in the Finder's Column view?
    <Re-Titled By Host>

No, because you can't set a columns view default.

  • Can the "Finder" icon be set to always open a new window?

Can the "Finder" icon (on the dock) be set to simply open a new window every time when clicked? Instead of always selecting the dialog "new finder window" under "File" ? Or having to right clicking on the FINDER dock icon, then selecting "new finder window".
I'd like to simply click on the finder icon and have a new window just open every time.
Same with Safair. Simply click on the "Safari" dock icon, and a new blank safari window would open, instead of selecting "new window" under safari "File" menu.
I don't know if this can be set by setting a command via terminal, or ?
There are no options under preferences to do this.
Usually there is some "command line" done within the terminal app, to tweek most default settings, like what I want to do...?

The easiest way to open new windows in Finder, Safari and just about any other program in Mac OS X is to use the keyboard shortcut, 'Command' + 'n'

  • Can the "find my phone" app be deleted?

Can the "find my phone" app be deleted?

Yes, it can be deleted, but if you are concerned that deleting the app will prevent your phone from being trackable, don't be.
The "Find my iPhone" app does not need to be installed for the Find my iPhone service to work. It is only for locating another iOS device from yours.
For your phone to be trackable, the MobileMe/iCloud account needs to be setup on it, Find my iPhone needs to be enabled, Location Services needs to be turned on, and the phone needs an internet connection.

If you mean Safari extensions, that's OK. Extensions are not necessary in order to use Safari.

  • How many files can the Finder move at a time between folders?

I have about 45000 files to move from one folder to another. Trying to do it in one jump by highlighting them all and trying to drag them froze the Finder.
What would be the maximum in a single jump?

I don't think it can move 45,000 files at once, in folders or not.
Finder seems to build lists of files to move (in memory), and does not behave well when the list gets too big.
I suggest you try moving them in batches of fewer than 4000 files at once.

  • Can the Find My iPhone app use a serial number to locate lost iPod Touch 4g

I lost my iPod Touch 4g and want to find with the Find my iPhone app. I'm using my brother's iPhone 4s to locate it. Can I use a serial number to locate. I lost it in school (in the Administrations office) so I know it won't be stolen. I had them search the whole building and found nothing. My school has Wi-Fi. I got the serial number from iTunes back up.

The find my iDevice works through iCloud.  What you needed to have done before it went missing was setup an iCloud account on the device, then enable the find my device slider setting to "ON" under that account's settings.
If you did not do that, it is not trackable.
There is no way to track it by serial number.
Also, in order to be trackable it has to be powered on and connected to a data connection.  A wifi-only device like an iPod Touch powers off the wifi radio when running on the battery, so if it has gone into sleep mode, it would not be trackable until or unless woken up by someone so it could re-acquire a data connection with a wifi network.

  • How can the number of columns be frozen?

I'm entering data in a file where I'm satisfied with the current set of columns. I come to the last column and press the Return key. Despite the fact I've already "Frozen Header Columns" (Control click on the final desired column) the tab and return keys create an unwanted column. How can I prevent this action and go instead to the first column in the next row?
    Appreciated.

Unfortunately, your "need" is not supported in iOS.
** Make use of "labels" in order to differentiate between the numbers of the same contact.

  • Lost or stolen ipod:  can the finder turn off Mobileme?

I've searched the forums and can't find the answer; lots of lost ipod threads out there so maybe I've just overlooked it, though.  Apologies if so!  I don't have an ipod myself to fiddle with to find the answers.
My daughter lost her ipod touch, 4th generation yesterday afternoon (or possibly it was stolen?).  She did not have a security code required at the time it was lost.  She had the "Find my ipod" app installed, but it was two hours before she was able to get home to go on-line and a) add a message and b) add a security code.  We're assuming that at this point, if anyone tries to turn it on they'll get the message she posted with her phone number and they'll be locked out of using it since they won't have the security code, and hopefully we'll get some information as to its whereabouts.
However, what happens if the finder (or thief...?) turned it on during that two hour period before she had logged onto Mobileme to add the message/security code?  Could they have gotten into the Find my Ipod app and disabled it or turned it off?
Also, we live in a rural area where lots of people don't have wireless at home yet (yes, some people still have dial-up!).  I know that the Find... app requires wireless.  I assume, then, that no security code will be required if someone uses the ipod out of range of wi-fi?  And if they do so, and if the answer to the first question is "yes", then presumably they can just make sure that they're out of range of Wi-fi and go in and disable the Find... app?  or can that only be disabled from the mobileme website?
    Thanks for any info.

Thanks to everyone for your helpful information.  I really appreciate it!
Happy ending for my daughter:  someone turned her iPod into the school office this afternoon.
Strange ending for Mobileme, though, and not particularly confidence-inspiring:  even after the iPod was home and on-line, Mobileme continued to show "Location not available".  Mobileme is clearly finding it:  I just tested it by sending a message from Mobileme to the ipod, and it displayed immediately.  But it doesn't give any indication of a location.  I would have thought it might have at least displayed an IP address if nothing else, which would be helpful at least for telling whether it was at some known location (e.g. I can easily enough figure out what our IP address is at home, what the school's IP address is, and a few other locations like her cousin's house, grandparents' house, etc.  That wouldn't help much with a theft situation, but would surely help if it had been left somewhere.

  • Can the Find iPhone app find devices that aren't mine?

So my MacBook Pro was stolen a couple weeks ago out of my rental car while I was in Seattle, WA. I had iCloud on it synced with my iPhone, but never used it or saved anything to it. Someone told me that I could find my stolen computer though iCloud, but when I read up on it it I was under the impression it would only track other devices from a computer, not the other way around. Anywho, I bought a brand new MacBook Pro today and setup iCloud on it. i then downloaded the Find iPhone app for my phone and two MacBook Pros appeared as my devices. My brand new one named "Jeff's MacBook Pro", and the other under somone elses name. A location was given for mine and I was able to lock it and send messages from my phone. The other one could not be located and the messages are still pending to be sent. Is it possible that my MacBook Pro appeared since I still have it registered under my name on apple.com or could this just be someone elses?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Some macs will continue to be tracked even after Find my phone has been disabled, but it has to be turned on first
Did you enable Find My Phone on your macbook before it was stolen.

  • How can i find my deleted text messages on the iphone4

My ex boyfriend figured out a way to get all my deleted messages from the last month and i want to know how i can block him from doing this again?

Also, if the messages used Apple's iMessage, then any other device logged in using the same Apple ID and password would still have those messages regardless of whether you deleted them on your iPhone.
