Can the hard disk named "\" cause it not to load?

Hello Everyone,
Machine will not load (G4 12" running 10.4. After it starts, the apple icon appears then the spinning progress wheel, and that is it. It will not finish loading.
I used Disk Warrior, and drive genius and nothing worked. I booted the computer from the boot up disk utility disk. When the program was running I noticed the hard disk was named "\" which is the back slash symbol. I was wonder if having the hard disk named this could cause the computer not to boot up and if yes, then how do I change the name?
Thank you.
Marco

You may be able to rename it by booting it in Target mode:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58583
Or booting another Mac and connecting it to that Mac using a hard drive case that supports that drive.

I'd recommend that you check for Mac User Group(s) in Orange County.  That's where you'd likely find a diehard Mac fanatic who might want to add your 6500 to his/her collection.  Even if you got nothing for it, it would be better than e-cycling it.  I upgraded my 6500/275 with what was a "large" hard drive at the time (15 GBs), maxed the memory at 128 MBs, installed the 512K L2 cache card, a better ATI Rage Pro PCI graphics card, a USB PCI card, and an internal 56K modem.  With it running OS 9.1, it did all of the pre-OS X stuff I needed it to do.  As I previously mentioned, it's a nice-sounding MP3 player.  Internet Explorer 5.1.7 (the final release from 2001) kept it useful for surfing the web up until 2005, when it became too outdated/incompatible with many web sites.  Unfortunately, the demands of the internet and the need for a modern browser, as well as faster processing to digest it all, are what retired many older Macs from active duty.  So my (2) 6500s and (3) 6400s (same tower design) sit in storage.  There is one concern that I'll pass along: The motherboard has a 4.5-volt alkaline battery, that's a small, black plastic cube, secured in place by velcro.  If your 6500 has been disconnected from electricity for a long time, the battery will undoubtedly be dead.  Unlike the many Apple computers that used a small ½AA lithium battery (that I've never seen leak when completely dead), the 6500's battery can and usually does start leaking.  Because the motherboard sits vertically oriented on its side edge when installed, the leaking battery will drip alkaline solution down the board, corroding any components in it path.  I've seen motherboards ruined from this.  If you're going to give it away or sell it, you might want to pull the motherboard (remove the two machine screws on the rear I/O panel, next to the pull tabs).  Slide out the board and unplug the battery's small connector (has red & black wires), then lift up on the battery, while holding down the "toothed" velcro mount with something non-conductive, like a popsicle stick.  Once it's free, dispose of the battery.  If you're interested, a replacement can be purchased for about $5-$7 from battery specialty retailers - it's a Rayovac 870 or 871.  Even if you don't replace it, removing one that will eventually leak is a good idea, (hopefully) before any damage is done.

  • Recovery of Factory Default Software or Erase the Hard disk

I'm tryiong to wipe my laptop (Satellite A305) clean and reinstall Vista using my recovery disk and the Toshiba Recovery Wizard. When I get the the point of no return I have 2 options, either Recovery of Factory Default Software or Erase the hard disk. I've tried to use the first option (Recovery of Factory Default Software) before and it didn't wipe the virus I have on my computer off so I want to try the second option (Erase the hard disk) but i'm not sure what will happen

To rid yourself of a virus, you should delete all the partitions and overwrite all of the sectors on the hard disk. Those bugs can hide even in other partitions.
See the section Recovering the original factory image (recommended recovery method), which begins on p. 62 of the User's Guide.
       Satellite A300 Series User’s Guide
That Guide most likely applies to your computer. But if you reply, be sure to give us the complete model number. I've noticed that sometimes Toshiba modifies the Guide.

My mackbook pro 13' A1278, has had multiple errors with the hard disk. Now does not recognize the internal hard disk, but connect this HD using usb conector works fine.
    So it's a hardware problem.

    Pipfromvic,
have you tried installing Mavericks onto an external disk, and booting from the external disk using Startup Manager? If it runs well from an external disk, but continually crashes when running from the internal disk even after clean reïnstallations, then that could point to a faulty internal SATA cable as the culprit.

Well, your profile info says 10.4.11, and you are posting your question in the iMac (PPC) category.  If you are running Snow Leopard, it must be a fairly recent Intel iMac.
In that case, you should definitely post your question here
    https://discussions.apple.com/community/mac_os/mac_os_x_v10.6_snow_leopard
where other Snow Leopard users can see your question.  Restate the problem, what error messages you get, and what you have tried already (for trouble-shooting).

  • I have a 2nd gen Mac book air with Lion. The hard disk has filled up even though i keep my data , music etc on hard drive . I used disk inspector to find where problem was and it is 20GB in the hidden files under the user directory can i resolve this ?

I have a 2nd Gen MAc book Air with Lion .  The 60GB hard disc has quickly filled up despite me keeping most of my data on a portable hard drive .  I used disk inspector to locate the problem but found that it was was in 20 GB of hidden files in my user directory .  Is this correct and is there anything i can do about it ? Using disk inspector you can not see individual hudden diretories or files. I did unhide them but there is a mass of diretories etc and so no way i could see if this is one or multiple files using the space. Library System and  Applications are at 4 3 and 3 GB respectvely.  The data I actually keep on there is 9GB    Thanks for any help

I think the problem is Quick Time Player. I am using OS 10.6.8 by the way.
    I tried it out again.
I had about 26 GB of space before I played an .avi video.
After the movie started to play (it was slow to load), I got a warning message that my startup disk was full. I opened Disk Utility and it told me I had no space left (about 20 MB or something like that was left).
I watched to the end of the movie.
    Then I quit Quicktime Player.
And I shut down the computer.
I turned on the computer and checked Disk Utility. I have about 26 GB of space.
I think for some reason Quicktime Player uses up a lot of the disk space when it runs movies that are problematic. This movie I was watching did not open with vlc.
I normally use vlc to watch movies.
Probably it doesn't use up this much space when the movie is OK.
I think there's a problem with this particular movie. It is about 50 MB so it's not that big a file. I watch .smi subtitles with it. The Quicktime Player automatically loads the subtitle file in this case because the subtitle file has the same name as the movie file.
I watched about 10 movie files from the same series that I downloaded together and did not have any problem watching them. I watched them on vlc. But this latest movie had problems I think (as I repeat). It did not load on vlc even though I waited for a minute, and normally movies load instantly on vlc.
So I think that movie file caused problems. It made QT player use up a lot of hard disk space.
I had better avoid watching that movie in the future. I don't want it to wreck my hard drive.
So to sum up, everything is back to normal. I have the hard disk space that I should have. However, I am scared of damaging my hard drive due to shonky movie files that eat up all the space when they are played using QT player, and so I will not watch those files in the future, as I do not know why the files do that.

  • Can't find the hard disk

Hi Everyone, My iMac G5 20" (not iSight) is about 18 months old and I never had any problem with it until a week ago, when it started booting up with white blank screen. I tried to start it up by Tiger, but wouldn't have it, so I went to change the PRAM battery, but broke the clip, now put a new battery and fixed the problem somehow, BUT regardless how often and how hard I tried, the computer can not find the hard disk when it reaches the installation stage. Not by the system DVD or by it's disk utility. I tried the hard disk in my PowerMac, it works fine. I tried another hard disk, just the same. The three lights on the motherboard come on just fine. I have also tried it with the original DVDs (10.3.9) but just the same. Any ideas please? Many thanks

    Hi,
Ref: iMac 20" (not iSight) model.
Well, I started it by holding down the option key, like usual it only show the flashing icon the the center of the white screen toggling the small square with question mark, looking for the hard drive.
I boot the iMac by system CD, it takes me through first 5/6 stages and finally does not find any hard drive to install. During this process, when I use the Apple Hardware, it does not find anything.
The hard drive works fine on other machines and other working machine hard drive will not be detected on the iMac.
All three logicboard light come on, showing it works fine, according to Apple manual.
The iMac was working fine, then after started to miss detecting the hard drive a few times during it last two weeks of being used, now it will not detect the hard drive.
Looking from logical point of view, it leads to one of the two cables connecting the hard drive to the logicboarde being faulty, but they have never been touched before as well as look fine.
Would it be caused by backup battery (PRAM)?
    Thanks

  • My system is asking to run the hard disk test run...What i have to do? can any one guide me????

model is Hp Pavilion  g6.. windows 7 home basic,
My system is asking to run the hard disk test run.. i have run , there was no error, but the message is still comming, i do not kow whether i amdoing it in a right way or not.. Please any giude do that test and find the issue.....

    Hi,
If you receive this message when starting the notebook, try the following.
Shut down the notebook.  Tap away at f10 as you start the notebook to enter the bios menu.  Under the Advanced or Diagnostic tab you should find the facility to run a test on the Hard Drive.  Post back with the details of any error messages.
If you receive this message while Windows is running , click the Start Menu, click Computer, left click Local Disc C once to highlight it, right click Local Disc C and select Properties.  Click the Tools tab and then click the button to 'Check the Drive for Errors'.  In the following window make sure both boxes are ticked and then click Start.  Agree to schedule the check at the next system restart and then restart the notebook - this process can take a couple of hours to complete before loading back into Windows.

  • Folders that I copy from my Macbook to my External Hard Disk does NOT appear on any other drive that I connect the Hard disk to (TV, PC, ... etc.)

    I'm facing a bit of a problem.
Any folder I copy from my Macbook Pro to my External Hard Disk does NOT appear on any other device that I connect the Hard Disk to (TV, PC, etc).
The Hard disk format is "MS-DOS (FAT)".
The folders that are copied from Macbook appear when I connect the Hard Disk to my Macbook only, yet, the folders that I copy from a PC to the Hard Disk appear on Macbook, PC, and TV and are also available from editing from both Mac and PC.
I was advised to install "Paragon" software and I did but I'm not sure how to use it to convert the folders on the hard drive to any format that can be read on other drives or devices (NTFS or otherwise).
I'd appreciate some help. Thank you.

Hi Simon.  How is it formatted, FAT or NTFS?
I only ask as OSX will only read NTFS partitions unless you install an App such as Paragon NTFS or Tuxera NTFS.

    Hi MrDebugging,
    >>
When I Try to add a SCSI Controller, and then I click browse to add a UNC I get this:
    C:\Users\Public\Documents\Hyper-V\Virtual hard disks\ClienMachine.vhdx
but I tried placing in different location, and the same problem occurs!
By the way, Im not on a server , I am a domestic user and I am running it on my
    Windows 8.1
According to the error message , it seems that it is not a permission issue .
The VM is Gen 1 or Gen2 ?
Generally the error message occurs when you enable "shared vhdx" on standalone/client hyper-v host :
Please try to attach the VHDx file to IDE controller if it is a Gen 1 virtual machine (because only the SCSI controller has the option "virtual hard disk sharing" and Gen 1 VM only can boot from IDE )
All in all , please do not use this feature without CSV or Scale-Out File Server with SMB 3.0 on file-based storage .
If it is not the case , please detail steps what you did .

I can't start with the IOS. The point is that it is waiting for the files to be transferred which l do not understand. So what l do is to switch off the 2620XM but the result it says is that l am stopping the file from been transferred which is a real puzzle to me. Because at first the IOS is been transferred but why it is going back to the rommom mode still beats my imagination.

  • How can I reload my copy of Mac lion aftre ereasing the hard disk.

How can I redownload my copy of mac lion again?? I downloaded the the copy via
OS X Lion Up to Date Program then and due to some issues in the copy I tried to reinstall mac lion through rcovery tools upon booting but I received this message " a server with the specified host couldnt be found". then I used the original dvd to boot the system and install leopard via erasing the hard disk.

You can go to the Apple online store and purcahse a copy of Mountain Lion.  This will give you a redemption code, which you can use to download Mountain Lion from the App Store.  Unfortuantely, I'm not aware of any other way to legally purchase it.  I have never seen Apple release Muontain Lion on DVD.
In terms of Apple Service, they just need the serial number of the machine to check the purcahse date.  It is usually correct, to within a few weeks.  A quick Google search should give you the correct number to dial.
    I hope this helps.

  • Can the Finger Print Reader be used for the Hard Disk Password at Power-On Boot Time on the W700?

I own a W700 and I have enabled the Hard Disk password at boot time (I have 2 HDDs, so there are two password prompts).
I always type in the passwords, but was wondering if the Finger Print Reader can be used instead?
The Finger Print Reader works fine from Windows 7 logon onwards, but it would also be nice to use it at system boot time, after powering on.
Please let me know if this is possible.
    Thanks!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Sorry I did not get back online quick enough...but the passwords are the same.
For some reason, after my first cold boot, I was still prompted for the hard disk passwords.  I powered down again and when I powered back up, it signed me on all the way through.  So it was just a hiccup.
All is good now and I'm very happy!
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
