Can the hard drive from the Time Capsule be used as USB drive only?

My Time Capsule "router" kept losing the wireless capabilty, so I purchased an Airport Express (with the dual-band router).
I'd like to salvage the Time Capsule hard-drive portion and connect it to a USB port.
But when I plug-in the Time Capsule, the light blinks yellow suggesting some configuration problem.
When connecting to a USB port, my iMac will not detect a new device.
Can the Time Capsule hard-drive be used separately from the router?

Can the hard drive from the Time Capsule be used as a USB drive only?
Sorry, but no. The Time Capsule is a network drive, so it must be connected to a network using an Ethernet or wireless connection. The USB port on the Time Capsule is there only to add additional storage capacity.
Can the Time Capsule hard-drive be used separately from the router
Yes, you would configure the Time Capsule in Bridge Mode to do this. If you do not need the wireless capability, you can turn the wireless off on the Time Capsule.

I have an external hard drive from my time capsule that stopped working on me. I am attempting to access the data with a hard drive reader on my MAC. I am able to see the drive in disk utility and under system info USB. But I am unable to access the data and it does not show on the desktop when connected.

Ok if disk utility was able to verify the drive I doubt there is any problem.. are you trying to open a TM backup??
You need to mount the sparsebundle then check the actual info inside the bundle.
Don't use disk warrior.. if the disk has verified then unless you deliberately deleted files there is nothing that is going to do.
Pondini has a lot of stuff about getting access to the sparsebundle.
    http://pondini.org/TM/17.html
But if you have copied info to the TC that is now gone.. and the disk is ok.. I am not sure.. the TC will not have deleted the files itself.

Disk Utility would be used for an internal hard drive on your Mac, or for a drive that was attached directly using USB or FireWire.
The Time Capsule is a network drive. Disk Utility cannot be used for this type of drive.
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utiltiies > AirPort Utility
    Click Manual Setup
    Click the Disks icon
Click the Disks tab below the icon
    Click Erase
The "Quick Erase" option will only take a minute or so. This would be fine if you plan to keep the Time Capsule yourself.
If you plan to sell the Time Capsule, you would want to use a more secure erase, like "Zero Out", which will likely take 4-6 hours or so since everything on the drive will be replaced with zeros.

  • Can I store iphoto pictures in time capsule and use with pad

Can I store iphoto pictures in time capsule and use with pad

We can tell you that it is possible to store separate images on the Time Capsule drive. If however, you are asking if you can access separate images from your Time Machine backups on the Time Capsule, this is not possible.
How you get the images that your want from iPhoto on your Mac to the Time Capsule drive is a question for the iPhoto experts. It will likely involve "exporting" the files that you want and then moving them using the Finder to the Time Capsule drive.
How you access those images on the Time Capsule from an iPad is a question for the Using iPad experts.

  • Airport Extreme and Time Machine backups using a USB drive

    Hi there,
I checked through the threads/FAQ's for an answer to this but couldn't find anything...
I have an AE set up with a USB drive attached as my Time Machine backup drive. When I start my MBP up and initiate a forced backup, Time Machine will go and find my drive (via the AE), mount it and carry out the backup without a problem. However, if I start my MBP up and wait for the scheduled hourly backup, TM doesn't see the drive (or perform the backup) unless I go and manually mount the drive first.
I realise I can put the drive in my login items to auto mount on boot but I wondered if there was a way to get the scheduled backups to work without doing this (as with the forced backups).
    Thanks

    Pondini,
Actually, I wasn't thinking about theft. I was just thinking that for security in a possible data-loss "event," it was better to have the backup drive physically separated from the main computer. But maybe that's not necessary.
That's unlikely. A power surge could take out both your Mac and connected external HD. You do have your Macs on good surge protectors or, better yet, U.P.S. systems, right? If not, see [Using a U.P.S. System with a Mac|http://web.me.com/pondini/AppleTips/UPS.html].
But wherever the external HD is, unless it's on a surge protector or U.P.S., it's still exposed.
Other things causing data loss are even less likely to affect your Time Machine drive (especially if there's no other data on it).
Yes, I could hook something up to my Mac Mini. Good point! And that would really keep it separated, since it would be in an entirely different floor. But then again, Time Machine backups done wirelessly would probably take forever.
The first one, yes. But if you have a good WIFI connection, subsequent ones shouldn't take too long or be too obtrusive, except when you've updated a lot of data (like installing an OSX update).
See #22 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum), for setup instructions.
But this just shows that there are a lot of options.
    Yes.
I do wish Apple would solve the problem of Time Machine working via the Airport Extreme. That would be my favorite option.
Not likely. Time Machine's been out since Leopard, about 3 years, and backups via an Extreme have never been reliable or supported. Just why they work well on a Time Capsule, or even a USB drive connected to a TC, but not an Airport, is a mystery, but that's the way it is.
But it's always a good idea to keep secondary backups. See #27 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum), for some suggestions.

  • How do I restore a new hard drive from a time capsule backup?

Going tomorrow to pickup my iMac at the Apple store after a 1TB hard disk replacement.  Time capsule backed up about 1 hr before the disk failure.  What are the steps for doing this restoration properly? I'm very nervous about this process & I don't wanna start this process the wrong way.  I have read horror stories in different threads about going at this the wrong way.  Thanks in advance for any help

Since  you will have a "new" iMac, If it were me, I would start right here....with info from top guru Pondini.

  • How can i get files from my time capsule to my new mac?

    Hello there,
I know this topic i much discussed, but searching has not turned up a solution.
I have a new mac book pro 15 on order and want to grab my files from my time capsule.   My old mac book pro 15 (3 months old) was encrypted with file safe.  In the past i have never had good results with bringing data to a new mac from time capsules; I've tried many times for my self and family.  As a result I use the time capsule for day to day old file retrieval needs and do manual backups of my data onto externals and NAS devices for migration to new computers-tedious but it has yet to fail me.  This time, I did that with everything except a few folders of my movies and pictures.  They are now prisoner on the time capsule.
What is the best way to get files off the time capsule and does it require that my login and user name on the new mac be identical to that which was on my old mac?
(I change my user names each time i get a new mac, not specifically on purpose but i haven't paid attention to what they were when setting up a new computer.)
    any assistance is appreciated.
    Thanks

    Thanks Allan,
Help me understand what question you're referring to.  I've been through several new macs and am not sure what specifically you're speaking about.
My old mac had a partition on the drive that I do not want on the new mac, so I am concerned about doing a full restore and prefer a file by file or folder by folder. is this possible?

  • HT1331 How to connect external hard disk to airport time capsule and use it throughmy ipad ?

I Have connected an external usb hard disk to airport time capsule. pleasea help me to configure it from my ipad and use it from my ipad.

You need the disk formatted HFS+ on a Mac.. you cannot format disks from the airport utility and there is no hard disk utility of course on ipad.
Once you set it to share.. then you need to load a file app to the ipad as it has no ability to natively handle files.. check out filebrowser as a standard one.. but there are several available.

  • Can I plug the hard drive from my Time Capsule into my PC?

My laptop's hard drive recently died and the chance of being able to recover any data from it is pretty slim. To make matters worse, i've been meaning to buy a new Time Capsule for a while as mine is no longer functioning correctly (won't let me connect even with a solid green light).
I'm hoping that's the fault of the rest of the Time Capsule, and not the hard drive and its contents. So, would it be possible to plug the Time Capsule's hard drive into my Windows PC and somehow recover the data from there?
    Thanks!

The only files you can recover are ones you put there.. so the only way and the only person who knows the answer is you.. where did you put the files?
Did you put them in a new folder under the share, data.. then that is where they will be.
If you put them inside the sparsebundle.. you are dead. But if you created a new directory inside the sparsebundle you might still get access to it.. there is only one way to find out.. have a go.. !!
BTW if you did this, that is why you have issues.. putting files inside a sparsebundle will destroy it. Not a great idea. But it is allowed.
Who can know these things.. YOU.. and YOU ALONE.
You might find it cheaper in your case to repair the TC..
If it is Gen 1 or 2, type "Time Capsule Power Supply" into ebay.. without the ""
There are some there to help you fix it.
    Or a repairer could help.

It is much easier to get your files back from a working TC.

  • Can I retrieve files from a Time Capsule data hard-drive if I completed a simple-erase on it?

I have a 2TB Time Capsule. I stored files on the hard drive within the Time Capsule. I did a quick-erase of the hard drive (Time Capsule) via Airport Utility on my MacBook Pro and forgot the files were on it. Is there anyway I can retrieve these files? The Time Capsule's 2TB capacity was hardly used at all, I used it for Time Machine but apart from that I just stored some files on it. Thank you in advance if you could help.

As per Bob's comment.. BUTT.. big fat one.
The disk has to be out of the TC to do it. You need to directly access the disk so you need to remove the disk (voiding warranty) and place it in a usb holder and plug into a computer. If you are very careful pulling up the rubber mat. Using lots of heat from heat gun or hair dryer with half the inlet blocked.. and carefully pull up the mat leaving the label last and not stetching it.. the mat should go back with nobody knowing.. !!
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Replacing-Apple-Time-Capsule-HDD/2750/1
I hope you stopped using the TC immediately. Any new files will overwrite the old ones.
I went through this exercise recently to help a customer with a dead WD hard disk in their Gen 4 TC.. The data partition had lost format. Using just the demo of data rescue 3.. as I could not find a demo of Disk Warrior and I refuse to pay for something that offers no refund.. $100 is not too much if it works.. but it is expensive if you get nothing. But it will very likely work. Certainly the files were still available and correctly named.. but the demo does not allow much of a test.. but still looked hopeful. Customer wanted the hard disk changed wanted to do the recovery herself.. which is fine.
BTW if you have a choice find a tool that allows you to copy the files... you might need to buy another USB disk so you have a suitable target that is big enough. It is possible to repair a drive and so just recover the files.. the fast erase simply wipes the allocation table. Files should not be affected.. but any changes to the disk are permanent and if it goes bad will make it even more difficult to recover.. It can take a long time to copy files off but is safest route.
TC is a backup target.. the whole idea of backup is having at least 2 locations for your files.. by placing files on the TC.. there is no automated backup.. the disk could have died and you will lose everything.. this is kind of a warning.. don't do it.

  • Access the user/library from a Time Capsule File

  • Time capsule finding plugged in usb drive

I've got a new time capsule and have plugged in a USB drive into the USB slot. It's the drive I used to use as a time machine and external drive, which I now wish to use just as a wireless external drive. It is a partitioned drive with Mac OS journaled on two of three partitions (the old time machine, the external drive) and the last partition was used as an external drive for Windows files.
I've gone into Airport Utility and under the Disks tab I have ticked 'share disks over WAN' box. I can see all three partitions in the box above but they don't appear in Finder. I am able to back up my existing Aperture vault wirelessly, so I know it's connected and working, but I can't access them it directly in Finder. Any ideas?

Thanks - the Connect to Server helped, typing in the IP address shown in Airport Utility. I can see the Mac drives and the time capsule drive which is what I'm after (but not the Windows drive). I had to drag the drive into the left tab of the Finder window to keep it there, but it's now there every time I open Finder, which is what I'm after.
Could I gain 'better' access to this USB drive wirelessly? Disk utility can't find it - I was going to remove the old time machine partition on the external USB. If I plugged the disk straight into the computer I could do that, but I wondered whether I could get the same level of access without having to remove it from the time capsule

  • How can i Transfer Photos from iPad to an external hdd or USB drive?

    Hey everyone,
Do you Know how to Transfer Files and especially Photos from the iPad to an external hdd or USB drive? I ll Be travelling for a Long Time and Wont take my MacBook with me, only the iPad, the Camera and an external hdd to Save Photos and Videos from the Camera. Thanks.
    Best Wishes,
    Nick

You can't - external drives and flash drives can't be connected to the iPad for copying photos (or anything else) off the iPad. You can use some photo upload sites to store them on web accounts or cloud services, but for a large number of photographs you'll be better off with a laptop and external drives for backup.

  • Can you connect external HD to time capsule and use it as NAS?

I have a Time Capsule which I uses to back up my family's mac.  I also have an Airport Extreme to extend the range.  I have no problem reversing the function as to have the Time Capsule extend if need be.
My wife's old Power PC display took a crap, and we're thinking of getting the new MacBook Air.  Unfortunately this means space will be a premium.  We're wondering if it is possible to connect an external HD to either Time Capsule or Airport Extreme to use it as NAS?  We plan to move all our videos, mainly home video, and iTunes library to it and have the whole family access it from there.
There are few problems I might see.  While me and my wife share the same iTunes library, my little sister totally have different library.  I'm sure some songs overlaps.  Is there any way to consilidate this without having overlaps?  Also, is it possible to still organize it so I only have my current library sync to my iOS devices without manually managed music?
I have a few old HD from my macbooks that just sitting around.  One is 250GB and the other is 320GB that I'd like to see it getting some use if possible.

I can't answer all your questions, but what you propose sounds feasible.  You should find additional advice in this article.
