Can the ipad charge when connected to a computer?

I plug my ipad 1 into my laptop, but it says "not charging" at the top.  Why does it not charge if my laptop is plugged to power?

See Here for details,
iPad Charging
"The fastest way to charge your iPad is with the included 10W USB Power Adapter.
iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter.
When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge, but only when it's in sleep mode.
Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB.
If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain."

My iphone 4 is not being detected by any of my computers and not charging when connected to any computer.  It will, however, charge to the car or wall.  The only change that I can think of is that I downloaded a podcast from itunes directly from my phone.  I've since deleted this podcast with no luck.  I've restarted both the phone and the computer, still no luck.  One computer is running Vista and the other Windows 7, both have the latest Itunes Update.  Anyone have a fix for this?

try a reset of iPhone and then a restore, best, as new and if it then functions correctly try restoring with your backup

  • Plz help! my ipod no longer gets charged when connected to my computer

as the topic suggests, my ipod with video(5.5G) always shows that its fully charged when connected to my computer. but it wasn't like this a period of time ago, i wonder why. plz help me. i now dare not to transport more than 1g files to my ipod in case it would run out of battery and sth worse may follow...
since my computer is old with a celeronA 533(overclocked to 760, not a big difference), i closed lots of the system services which i think are useless, maybe that's the problem? but which service should i start? ipodservice.exe is always running when i connect my ipod with my pc
btw, i must say sorry with my poor english, hope you understand what i mean

If you mean that when plugged in it shows the iPod being fully charged but when you disconnect the battery is actually dead, then you probably have a defective battery.

  • Keep getting "itunes cannot read the contents of the iPad" message when connecting my iPad 2 to Windows XP

    Hi all,
I have an iPad 2 that I purchased in late 2011. I have a Windows XP PC. Of late, I have not been able to connect my iPad 2 to iTunes on my Windows XP (Service Pack 3) desktop. I keep getting the popular error "itunes cannot read the contents of the iPad. .... restore factory settings" message. I have tried re-installing latest iTunes altogether after fully uninstalling and removing registry entries. But it still keeps giving the same message. I have tried all the steps given here - http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1538 , except checking with a different USB cable. My cable however works well while charging. My system however seems to detect the iPad as camera. I desperately need some help to fix this.
    Thanks,
    Paddy

Worked for an iPad 4 (Retina) running iOS 7.0.3. connected to a Mac (Mavericks, iTunes 11.1.2). Although the file system is a bit different than what is shown on the video, the basic same steps can be carried out: download iFunbox (for Mac, obviously), go into "Raw file system", then "iTunes_Control" (you may want to switch to list view to see the complete name), then iTunes. There there was no iTunesDB file but I deleted iTunesCDB (was 0kB, expect that might have been the problem) and iTunesControl (0kB as well). Also deleted the Music folder in the previous directory.
After that I disconnected the iPad from iTunes, quit iTunes, relaunched, and it started sync'ing :-)
Note that now it's telling me that it cannot sync because an additional 10GB is required! Not sure what the problem is because the bar at the bottom of the iTunes window says it still has another 4GB available. I'm expecting there's a problem with how the size of the music is calculated (perhaps because I also sync Genius playlists and mixes), so I disabled music sync'ing for now so it can complete it once. Then I'll hand-pick the music again and hope it works!

  • If my iPad doesn't charge when connected to my computer, could that affect my file sharing?

I am trying to share a file via iTunes on my computer to an App on my iPad and keep getting an error. The file is working from other computers. The only thing I noticed is my iPad is not charging when plugged into the computer. Since this is a USB power issue, could that have something to do with why my file won'tsync properly to my iPad?
    Thanks.

When you say that your iPad is not charging, are you seeing "Not Charging" in either the status bar (unlocked) or in the middle of the screen (locked)?
If so, this is indicative of the fact that your computer's USB ports do not emit enough wattage to charge the device while it is in use. (i.e. out of sleep, with screen on)
Put the iPad to sleep (with the Sleep/Wake button) and let it be, and over time without any use, it should charge.
However, as Philly Phan said, provided that the device's battery still contained an adequate charge, it should not affect the file sync.

  • Why won't my ipad charged when plugged into a computer?

I have a new ipad and for some reason it will sync etc when plugged into one of our computers but it won't charge.
My husbands one charges in the same USB port and on any computer but when I put my ipad into the same ports it says "not charging"why?
    Thank you

Most computer USB ports don't have enough power to charge an iPad.  Typically, the iPad can only be charged with the supplied adapter.  If your husband's iPad is actually charging, it's charging very, very slow.

  • IPad bongs when connected to Mac computer

The iPad suddenly goes bong bong bong and won't connect to the Mac computer.

Thanks for the fast response.  I tried also plugging in my iPhone but had no problems so I assume iTunes is okay. The iPhone uses a different cable. The iPad cable is the same one I have been using for years.  I have bought cheap cables or tried cables that were probably for older iPods and had the same "bong" problem a long time ago.  I will purchase a new cable (quality) and give it a try.  No problem when I plug into the charger.

  • HT4061 my ipad air is in recovery mode and it is not starting.I pressed the main key when connected to my computer but there was no response

My ipad has gone in recovery mode when I tried to upgrade my system software.it showed a loading bar and then turned off and never started.i tried to turn it on by pressing the home key and start button simultaneously but there was no response.i even connected it to the  itunes but there was no response by the ipad

    RECOVERY MODE
    1. Turn off iPad
    2. Turn on computer and launch iTunes (make sure you have the latest version of iTune)
    3. Plug USB cable into computer's USB port
    4. Hold Home button down and plug the other end of cable into docking port.
DO NOT RELEASE BUTTON until you see picture of iTunes and plug
    5. Release Home button.
    ON COMPUTER
    6. iTunes has detected iPad in recovery mode. You must restore this iPad before it can be used with iTunes.
    7. Select "Restore iPad"...
    Note:
    1. Data will be lost if you do not have backup
    2. If you did not do step 4 properly, start all over again.

  • Though my itouch 5th Gen. will charge when connected to my computer, it doesn't show up as connected in itunes or on my computer under devices at all.  Please help!

As stated in the question, I have no idea whether it's a problem with my USB cord, my computer, or itouch.  If it helps any, there is a small scrape on the metal part of my USB on the itouch side, but it's a pretty insignificant mark.

    Try:
iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows
I would also try on another computer to help determine if you have an iPod/cable or computer problem.
There can be a cable problem since different conductors are used for charging and syncing.

  • My iPhone 4s will not charge using wall charger unit. It will only charge when connect to my computer UBS., My iPhone 4s will not charge using wall charger unit. It will only charge when connect to my computer UBS.

For about a month, I have to charge my iPhone 4S using my laptop UBS connection. It will not charge from the wall unit. I always update the OS. Is there any settings that I might have changed by mistake?

I have the same issue with my partners 4S.  I have a iphone 4 and my phone works on mains powers - we have 3 different charges we have all tried on hers and do not work but work on mine.  We have tried every outlet in the house and same issue, works on mine doesnt work on her 4S.
The issue only started about a month ago.  It started with only charging from mains if turned off - then the phone would refuse to stay turned off - now it wont charge at all from mains but works fine from a PC.
Its a very odd one as if it was something wrong with the docking port it surely shouldnt work through PC then?

  • Why doesnt the Ipad charge on the computer?

    Why?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
Likely, your computer does not have the required high-power USB port.
    For more details, see:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4060
and this included reference to 'high power' (defined as more than 500 milliamps output) USB
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4049?viewlocale=en_US
Confirming what the other poster says, my older MacBook, lacking high-power USB, does charge the iPad 2 when connected despite the message, although at a very very slow rate. I've noticed that the iPad charge increases a by percent or two when connected for an hour or more.

  • My iTunes library will not completely sync to neither my iPad nor my iPhone -- both are completely updated with the latest software. What do I have to do?? When I try to do the "autofill" option when connected to iTunes it says "no songs can be copied"

My iTunes library will not completely sync to neither my iPad nor my iPhone -- both are completely updated with the latest software. What do I have to do?? When I try to do the "autofill" option when connected to iTunes it says "no songs can be copied"...I literally bought some of these songs yesterday on my iPhone and now I can't sync them to my iPad. What is this issue? Usually I would just have to plug either device into iTunes and everything would sync, now nothing new syncs.

On your iPad tap Settings > Store
Switch Books off then back on then reset your iPad.
Hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home button down at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

I have successffully used my iPad with the Apple TV with no problem but just recently, the Airplay icon doesn't come up on the iPad anymore when I'm trying to connect.   What can I do to fix this?

Try restarting your router as a first thing, this sometimes works for me.

  • Why can't my original iPad running ios 5 charge when connected to a wall outlet?

Whenever I plug my iPad to charge, it says "Not Charging" even though it's connected to an outlet.

Are you using the charger that came with it? The iPad charger is a 10W charger. Many 'off the shelf' ones are only 5W. They will still charge the iPad, just slower, and trigger the 'not charging' words.
It's also possible that your USB cable is bad. Try swapping out another USB cable and see if the issue continues.
However, if you replicate the issue with multiple chargers, multiple USB cords and you still get 'not charging' when plugged into the wall then it's possible that the USB dock on your iPad itself is bad/going bad. If that's the case then you'll need to return the iPad to where you bought it or contact apple because if it's still under warranty they should fix/replace it.

  • My iphone4 when connected to any computer will not charge and is constantly connected and disconnected.  does the same with itunes.  Also i'm talking on the phone and all of a sudden the other person can not hear me.

My iphone4 when connected to any computer will not charge and is constantly connecting and disconnecting.  It does the same with itunes so it doesnt really sync.  Also when talking to someone, all of a sudden they cant hear me.

I'm having the same issue. I went to my local apple store and they could not work me into the genius bar so i made an appointment for tomorrow morning. The clerk did check the phone for the pink indicators at the top and bottom of the phone (where you plug in your USB or headphones) He said if you can see a pink indicator dot you may have gotten it wet, or had some sort of condensation in it, which could cause the plugs to not work.
In regards to people not being able to hear you, i'm waiting for my appointment tomorrow for more news! I would recommend taking it into your local apple store for more answers.
