Can the Mini be saved, post-Pepsi Syndrome?

I have a Mini my friend gave me to attempt to save that her idiot roommate spilled a can of knockoff generic cola onto, she said it worked incrementally worse and then stopped working at all gradually, which is a bad sign IMO. However the morons at the local non-Apple repair shop quoted her an arm and a leg to save it, which is ridiculous when she only got the Mini for $500. Chalk it up to Windoze/PC idiocy I suppose...well, I have taken the lid off it and it seems the CD drive is unscathed but the back and the side with the RAM slots looks good and sticky, just like someone spilled generic no-name cola across the top. Can I save this somehow, and if so, with what?

Almost certainly the logic board would have taken the worst of the spill, as you say it's at the bottom of the casing and that's where the soda would tend to pool until it began to dry. That isn't to say it will have killed it, but sadly the chances are high that it will have done so - or at least have caused sufficient damage that it would not function correctly. However, at the cost of these things, and if it were me (aside from demanding the roommate pay for replacement) I would probably give it a go, despite the amount of time.
It's difficult to know if anything would be salvageable otherwise - probably the hard drive because that's sealed, but even then it'll require careful cleaning - and it would be imperative to keep the cleaning solution away from the edges of the top plate or any vent in the drive casing. The optical drive may be OK, but if any soda got inside it, more than likely it will be too hard to fix. Memory may likewise be OK, but will need careful cleaning.
The worst aspect of this - aside from the spill in the first place of course - is that to stand any hope of recovering the system, or even any parts from it, entails a lot of time and careful effort, with no great hope of actually succeeding. Whether you want to give it a try depends on all the circumstances of course, which only you know in this instance, but as I said, at the cost of a new one, I would be inclined to give it a go.
As far as the time it takes to answer - well bearing in mind you posted late evening (EDT) the views you got were more likely from others looking for help than anyone around looking to help someone. Just a bad time of day for the regulars who are predominantly spread around Europe (middle of the night at that point) and Eastern and Central US. On top of that, while your question was a pretty short one, as you can see from the answers you've had today (and leaving aside the snotty bits about attitude of course) the replies you needed were actually quite complex - at least time consuming to compose given any real attempt to assist you. It's not that any of us don't understand the sense of urgency when an issue hits and the user feels the need for answers as fast as possible, but even then there are perhaps better ways of displaying that urgency! Anyway, it's done and you can't go back and change the post you made, so in a broader sense, speaking for myself, I'd be inclined to expect replies after 30-60 minutes during the day on a weekday in US time, but to perhaps expect a longer period to elapse earlier or later in the day or at weekends. Of course that's an appallingly general guide, but bearing in mind that most posters are here looking for help, the number of views rarely indicated the number of possible helpers who have read a question.

  • Can the Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter for a 2011 Mac Mini be used with Windows 7?

This question concerns the Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter described at the below link:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB572Z/A
When running Windows 7 via Boot Camp on a 2011 Mac Mini, can the above adapter be used with a VGA monitor?

Thank you for the confirmation, Mr. Peck.

  • Can the Mini do HDMI at all?

When I bought this Mini last week I was under the impression that a DVI-HDMI converter cable was all that I needed to feed HDMI into my 37-inch Vizio HDTV. Today, after trying both a Radio Shack cable and now an Apple cable and seeing no output to the TV on the HDMI connector I'm wondering if the Mini can do it at all.
All hints and clues gleefully accepted.
    Mini     9 Wintels

I was talking to the TV manufacturer a few minutes ago and their tech support person said roughly the same thing. I'll give it a try --although surrending 1366x768 for a lower resolution doesn't seem like an improvement.
(FWIW: My PCs can do 1360x768 with a couple of watery pixel columns. The Mini seems to have picked up the full 1366x768 from the display info without an issue and it looks incredible. I don't know if you allow links here, but if you do, click the image at http://www.technudge.net/?p=10244 and you might understand why I don't want to retreat in size.)
This might be one of those times to leave well enough alone.
i'm sure I'll be back as I try to relearn all this Mac Stuff. Thanks!

  • Can the mini support 16x9 ratio?

    ok simple question this one:
I want to use a mac mini as a home theater with my 16x9 plasma screen,
all of my standard macs will produce a 16x10 aspect ratio without any problem,
1920x1200, 1440x900 etc, but with the mac mini do you get an option to display a true 16x9 output?
for instance if I connect my powerbook to my plasma at 1440x900 I either lose the top apple menu and the dock or I have to distort the image to see the whole mac screen, not great!
something like 1440x810 would be optimum (I connect via a standard analogue sVGA connector)
any info would be great, cheers

If you aren't seeing 16:9 options from the PowerBook, you probably aren't going to see them from the mini, either. Whether or not OS X serves up 16:9 as an option is entirely up to the display and the driver data it contains. It sounds like your TV may have shortcomings in this respect.
Often the situation can be rectified using a program like SwitchRes X. If you are serious about getting a mini, you should first download and install SRX on your PowerBook and see if you can get 16:9 to work. If it works with the PowerBook, it will work with the mini.

  • Can the mini replace a apple tv fully?

I know that on the MacBook pros they have a optical in the same port as headphones. My question is that if I get the optical cable does the mini use it too and can it do 5.1 surround sound like the apple tv can in 5.1?

As the spec says: Combined optical digital audio input/audio line in (minijack)
I think this should be a yes. As my mac book pro does 5.1 with the right sources.
The problematic part is more if it does playback movies bought in the iTunes store in HDTV format as so far on my mac book pro this was not possible. So this is a question Apple needs to answer or somebody to try. As it support HDCP I would imagine it could technical fullfill Apple's needs but could be a marketing decision to push Apple TV to not to provide it to the mac mini. Even it would be the much better Apple TV as it supports DVD playback.

  • Can the MIni handle graphic/web design?

I was wondering if the Mac mini was enough to use as a computer for web design. I mainly plan to use Adobe software (Dreamweaver, photoshop, etc.). What configurations should I get if it is giid enough to use? I was thinking about just getting the base model then adding 2g ram and a large external hard drive. Would that work?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
I run Photoshop and Dreamweaver on systems far older and slower than a Mac mini (also on a G4 mini) and they run perfectly well, so there is no reason to believe an Intel mini would not run such software admirably well.
It is worth adding however that for versions of software written for PPC systems (G3, G4 and G5 based Macs) it would be wise to ensure that you have more, rather than less, memory in the system since while the software will run, it requires an on-the-fly translator to do so. This translator, Rosetta, is built-in to MacOS so there is nothing to add to enable it's use, but it is a bit of a memory hog in itself and in a Mac mini, maxing out the RAM to 2Gb allows it to run reasonably well. Added to Photoshop's need for lots of memory and hard drive space to run efficiently, and a base model mini with 2Gb RAM and a fast external drive should be able to handle the task well.
It's easy to mistake the mini's size as an indication of it's power, performance and capabilities, but it is a remarkably powerful system. In terms of processing alone, the base model is not far off the performance levels of the fully professional Macs of very recent years - many of which are still in active service doing extensive work in publishing, design, image and video editing and production, web authoring and much more.

  • How long can the Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter last?

    Hi,
I've been using Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter (genuine) for a year now but not everyday. Yesterday I bought a new display that needs this adapter, so now is the time that it will be used everyday. I was wondering how long can it last (or operational hours) if it were to sit in the same place, not unplugged, with an average use of 4 hours a day?
    Thanks
    PS. This one: http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB572Z/B/mini-displayport-to-vga-adapter.

    This is impossible to predict.
Sometime cables last a lifetime, sometimes they fail in short order.

  • Can the mini vid card drive a 1920x1200 screen?

Hi guys, thinking about getting a mini and wonering if it can drive a dell 2405?
The g4 or the intel version i have no preference . . . . well g4 version would be cheaper!!
    Thanks Kalel

It was a co-worker's monitor and I only used it for a bit. It looked good - even video - but I'll readily admit I'm spoiled by Apple's displays. I don't prefer dell's way of doing backlights - but that is a really, really minor and picky quibble.
If I didn't have Apple displays or couldn't afford them - dell would be my second choice at this point. Keep in mind I spend up to 12 hours a day regularly in front of a display - sometimes late at night and not having fatigued eyes is worth a lot to me. Dells have many more ports/butons/controls so if that is beneficial to you, then that's a plus for their models.
Sorry I don't have a g4 mini to test with.

  • Can the mini HDMI connect to smart TV?

As the topic : My information as followings:
    MacBookPro, 13 inch, Mid 2010
    OS X 10.9
    Thank you
    Utis_k

I would suggest looking into a Thunderbolt to HDMI connector. In this case, you may be able to use the TV as an external monitor. For this option, please confirm through additional research. I have not tested it personally.
You can also use an Apple TV, which connects with HDMI. In this case, you can use Airplay Mirroring. Not all Macs support Airplay Mirroring, so you need to check first. I have a Mid-2011 27" iMac, and it supports Airplay Mirroring. I don't use it often because my TV is in another room, but I just tried it and it worked. It had to change the screen resolution to work well, so I don't know if I would want to use it as my day to day monitor. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5404

  • I've broken my iPad, can the information be saved if I take it to apple and buy a new one?

I've broken my iPad, if I take it into apple can they get information from it as I've not backed it up in a while, if I buy a new one?

sorry. your data is likely unretrievable. Presuming the memory chips survived any impact, to get to them would require totally disassembling your device and frankensteining some sort of reader/connection. Which is beyond what will happen in an Apple store.

  • Any Recommendations for an HDTV Compatible with the Mini

I'm looking to get a 40" HDTV and have been trying to find information on which ones work best with a late 2009 mini. Also, is it necessary to use the mini displayport connection, or can the mini dvi connection be used?

One thing to keep in mind is that neither the mini-DVI (D) port nor the mini-DisplayPort on the mini carry an audio signal, they are strictly video. So you will need to think of alternatives if you want to get the audio to the TV.
If you have a TV with HDMI ports then you can use this device from Monoprice to incorporate the audio & video output from the Mac mini for HDMI input on your TV.

  • Supported resolutions on the Mini

Can the Mini support 1440 x 900 @ 60 hz reolution, I have a ViewSonic VA1912W widescreen monitor and I plan to buy a Mini in the next few days and that is the recommended setting for this monitor.

It really depends on whether your monitor is VGA or DVI. For DVI the max resolution is 1900 x 1200. For VGA it's 1900 x 1080. Both are larger than what you need, so you shouldn't have any problems.
The Mini's graphics output is DVI, but Apple includes an adapter for VGA monitors.
Based on what I found on the ViewSonic site, your monitor is VGA. However, it's best to check your monitor input just to be sure.
    DVI inputs look like this:
    VGA inputs look like this:

  • Can DataFinder calculate the Min/Max channel characteristic values?

    Hello there,
I'd like to run a query against using the Min and Max values of a channel.  I know I can generate these values by loading the data and then using the 'Update Characteristic Values' function in the data portal.
I am wondering if DataFinder can calculate these values as part of the index operation?  I've generated loads of data (50GB) where these values were not calculated at the time they were saved.
    Thank you,
    Martin

    Hello Martin,
I'm sorry DataFinder currently does not provide such kind of functionality - so in your case you have to run a DIAdem script (or LabVIEW VI) and update all channels with this information.
Nonetheless I think this is a brilliant idea, so what about posting it in the DIAdem Idea Exchange?
It might be cool to provide more details such as:
    - Should DataFinder calculate more statistical information while indexing files?
    - Should DataFinder store this information back to the files or just add it to its index?
    - What other kind of post processing, calculations or other can you envision while DataFinder is indexing files?

  • How can I show album art in the mini player when playing songs from a plugged in iPhone?

How can I show album art in the mini player when playing songs from a plugged in iPhone?
When I play from my phone and switch to the mini player it's always showing the music notes in the thumbnaill. It'd be nice if it could get album art off of the phone.
    I'm on iTunes version 11.0.4.4

    He @mracole,
it is very nice that you post a solution to complete the library with artwork for album's that do not have an artwork. Your solution perfectly addresses the problem for assigning artwork, BUT this thread is about CHANGING artwork for albums already uploaded into iTunes Match. Just try to replace for example a blue artwork cover for an album with a red one. If you made it in a simple way (without deleting the album from iTunes Match and local changes on the files with an external ID3-Application or 2 or more iTunes libraries on different Mac's) this is the right place to give a solution. I really tried for hours to change the artwork to make them visible in landscape cover flow mode on my iPhone5. In rare cases I made it, but then the covers sometimes where restored to the old onces - exacly how it is mentioned by Starhawk
As long as there is no simple way to change the cover of an iTunes Match stored album (you can change title, artist and so on without hitting "update iTunes Match" over all distributed Library on different devices - this date will be synchronized almost instantly) I considered the behaviour from iTunes as BUGGY! For me the local artwork cache (and if there is any iCloud artwork cache - I don't know) do not interfere with iCloud. Even when I delete the whole local cache (album artwork music - everything) I do not manage to change the artwork.
