Can the new iMac be used as a display for my mid 2010 MBP?

I am considering buying a 2011 iMac and was wondering if the new iMac can be used as a display for my mid 2010 MBP.
I know that the new iMac has a thunderbolt display ports, and my macbook pro does not.

You're referring to Target Display Mode Mid 2011 iMacs  this letter will explain how it works or in your case will not work () with your mid 2010 MBP. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

  • Can the new iMac be used as a display for a Macbook?

I have a Macbook Pro with Retina Display and I wanted to know if the new iMacs which were announced yesterday will allow me to connect my Macbook to it and use it as a display.
I know the new iMacs are not retina displays but it would be great to have additional monitor space.
    Thanks in advance.

    Yes, via Target Display Mode.

  • Can the new lightning connector connect to my mac for syncing iPod

Can the new lighning connector connect to my mac for syncing ipod/iphone

New iPhone, iPod, and iPad come with a Lightning to USB cable. If you need to buy one it's in the Apple store.

  • Where can I buy a genuine apple replacement battery (A1309) for my Mid 2010 17" Macbook Pro?

Where can I buy a genuine apple replacement battery (A1309) for my Mid 2010 17" Macbook Pro? There are used batteries on ebay that don't appear genuine. There are some third-party knock offs. The apple store seems to believe they can replace it, but I have to make a reservation at the silly Genius Bar just to have them tell me how much it's gonna cost, not to mention then likely wait for them to order the battery and install it. I'm perfectly capable of installing it myself. I just need to know where I can order it?
    Thanks,
    Andrew

Yeah, that's what I've finally decided. I was kidna super frustrated because the first apple store I called wouldn't even tell me a price or tell me if they could replace the battery without a Genius Bar appointment, and as I would have to take off work and drive acros town--and I don't have a car so I'd have to borrow one--that was pretty annoying. That call left me pricing linux laptops. I called another store to see if I'd have better luck, and the initial answer was the same, but the girl relented under some trying-to-be-nice-but-clearly-annoyed pressure, and she gave me the answers I needed: yes, they should have the battery in stock and it should be a same-day replacement that should cost $179.
It just *****, really, because there's so much about Apple that I used to love, and I'm watching it kinda melt away under their success in the mobile market. As a professional user, there's less and less reason to stick with them. Instead of being the best they can be, I feel like they're just trying to be flashier and just a little better than the other mediocre computer companies. Ugh. Anyway, now I'm ranting.

  • Can the new imac stream live tv?

I am thinking of buying an imac, but also tv. Can i stream live tv from the new imac?

Well it depends on what your trying to Ty. You can offer all sorts of things up like Airplay
    https://www.apple.com/airplay/
Or even think of purchasing an Apple TV
    http://www.apple.com/appletv/
There's simplistic screen sharing as well if you had movies on the iMac and so on, you could just drag and drop the video player.
Let me know what you think of these features and if your looking for something more ^_^

  • Can I use this hard drive for my Mid 2010 13 Inch Macbook Pro?

    http://www.crucial.com/store/modelpart.aspx?model=MacBook%20Pro%20(13-inch,%20Mi d%202010)&imodule=ST1000LM024#pr-header-back-to-top-link
    My macbook model is 7.1
I thought this would work but i just read one of the reviews and it says :
"CP specs state this is compatible with my mid 2010 Macbookpro 7.1, but it is not. I found this out after taking the computer and drive to the Apple store. OK, it's not so much CP specs that are wrong as the Apple folk took some time before coming up with the problem. Not all, but SOME of the 2010 systems with 2.4Ghz were never intended to use a 1Tb drive, and that means the OS will not mount properly."
Now im not sure if its just his problem, or all Mid 2010 MBPs that have this issue.

I have to question the premise of the review that you are citing.  Any 2.5" SATA HDD should work in your MBP.  Capacity is not an issue.  You might call the technical staff at OWC and pose this query to them.  I am confident that they will respond the same way I have.
    Ciao.

  • How much can the new iMac take on???

I am planning on buying a second Mac, so I was just wondering how powerfull the imac G5 2.1 really is. Can it handle programs like Final cut pro, Logic pro or Cinema 4d.
And how about games like "Star Wars Battlefront", "Battlefield 1942" or "Halo".
Does anybody have any of the above programs running on an imac?
    Cheers,
    Timbo.

    Welcome to discussions Tim!
Well I can only answer part of your question, because I'm not much of a gamer, a computer gamer I mean I play quiet a bit of Madden 06 on my xbox, as for the programs and the performance of the iMac G5 I can help you on that end, I own a 17" iSight 1.9Ghz, and it can handle all the programs you mention above but logic pro ( I don't owed a copy of logic pro so I can't recommend it to you ) as for the others I run FCP, Photoshop CS2, and Dreamweaver 8 with only 512mb of ram with out any problems, now with more ram wich I got 1 extra G they run flawless. As for the games i'm sure someone here can help you on that end.

  • How to lower the brightness of my iMac, when used as external display for my MacBook Pro?

The keyboard brightness controlls of the iMac do not work. The keyboard brightness controlls of the MacBook only controll the MacBook. Same goes for the display set up of the MacBook, I can change the MacBooks brightness there but not the one of the secondary screen.

  • Help! Need a new keyboard for my mid-2010 MBP

Someone spelt some beer on the keyboard, tried to clean with no luck, need new keyboard assy. Everything else works OK!
    <Serial Number Edited by Host>

    1> Turn it off
    2> Unplug from wall
    3> Take to Genius Bar
4> You should not post your unit's serial number "in the clear" in this forum.  I am asking the forum moderator to remove it.  Nor your full name, nore a valid e-mail address of yours (except under your profile, if you really want others to know it).  These posts are open to "scanning" by google and personal information can get into the great big world easily.

  • Where can I buy original apple battery for 13" Mid 2010 MBP?

My battery life has decreased dramatically and I need a replacement battery. I don't want to go to an appe authorized service center to fix this problem. It's a relatively simple and cheap fix and apple authorised service center will ask for a lot of money.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
A battery replacement at an Apple Store or reseller costs $129 + labour, which is quite similar to the cost of buying a battery in the Internet.
Anyway, you can buy the battery in the Internet. There are different websites, but I recommend you to buy it at iFixit > http://www.ifixit.com/MacBook-Parts/MacBook-Pro-13-Inch-Unibody-Battery/IF163-01 9

  • Using new iMAC 27 inch as a monitor for Macbook Pro/Air

Can the new iMac 27 inch be used as a monitor?  If so, while it's being used as a monitor connected to a macbook pro/air, will the iMac USB ports work and the camera for facetime?  Planning on using the laptop in clamshell mode and stored away.

The new 27-inch iMac can be used as an external display for other Macs with Thunderbolt (Early 2011 and newer MacBooks Pro, and Mid 2011 and newer MacBooks Air). See > http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11302
As far as I know, you can't use the camera (I may be wrong), but you can use the USB ports only for the iMac, not for the MacBook Pro or MacBook Air. If you want both features, you have to buy the LED Cinema Display or the Thunderbolt Display

  • Can I use firewire to transfer everything from my Macbook Pro (Intel Core 2 Duo 2.25 GHz) to the new iMac (2.5GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5)?

I have a MacBook Pro to use at work. It has everything (all genuine softwares, server connection etc). The company is using a contract IT company so connecting to the server and setting email is real issue with me as this IT people can't configure Mac. Last time it took them 1 week to set up everything for me ( me one the phone with them as they aren't coming to our office - they only use QuickViewer to get access to my laptop).
Now the company is buying me an iMac so that I can use the laptop at home. Can I use firewire to transfer everything to the new iMac so that I don't waste my time installing softwares & calling this IT people to set up my email and connection to the server again? If it works do I have to enter serial numbers in again for all the softwares or I have to buy new softwares (I know with Adobe CS - I can only install in one computer)?
    Thanks in advance.

If you want to use the adobe suite on the imac you will have to deactivate it on the MBP or it will show up as being used. That is if you can only install it on one computer. Some licenses you can install it on 2 computers but it has to say that on the cd key tag.
Sorry to hear about your bad experience with the contractors. It is not that hard to get stuff like that up and running on the mac.

  • How can a video editor use an NTSC studio monitor on the new iMac without a Firewire 400 port?

Looking at the new iMacs (hungrily) and wondering how I will be able to continue using my Sony DSR-11 and NTSC monitor in the absence of any Firewire 400 port.  I suppose there may be cables that will allow me to use the Firewire 800 port and am thinking they may be difficult to locate.

No they're not - they're available from many sources; i.e. I bought a FW 400 > 800 cable when I bought my iMac last August (at an authorized local reseller). Just google Firewire 400 > 800 and you'll get plenty of results. You can also opt for an adapter if you prefer. Both are also available at the Apple store online.
