Can the new MacBookPro be upgraded w/third party memory to 16GB?

I talked with someone that mentioned that the NEW MacBookPro (non-retina) can be upgraded to 16G of RAM using two 8 G memory modules and the system will recognize it, even though it isn't a sanctioned Apple configuration.
Is this true?
Thanks

Yes, you can upgrade to 16GB - Just make sure you install the right RAM spec'd out for your Macbook...
16GB - DDR3 - 1600MHz.
Stick with brand name RAM only for less issues...
Crucial, Mushkin, Corsair, Patriot (Mac Series, Kingston (non-Value) are good brands....
Also make sure you have a #00 Phillips screwdriver handy.....
You have 10 screws in the bottom of your Macbook - 7 short ones and 3 long ones - remember where they go in...

  • Did the new GarageBand wipe away my third party plug-ins?

After downloading the whole new GarageBand, I cant seem to find my plugins, like my TDR Feedback Compressor and vintage organs. WHat happened? I cant seem to find them.

After downloading the whole new GarageBand, I cant seem to find my plugins
Don't you see them in GarageaBand, or have they vanished from the /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/ folder  ?
Some Audio Unit plug-ins will no longer work, since the new GarageBand 10.0 is a 64-bit only application; the 32-bit plug-ins are incompatible.
See this document:  GarageBand for Mac (v10.0): Unexpected behavior with Audio Units plug-ins
Audio units need to be enabled in the Audio/Midi tab of the preferences.
To use audio unit plug-ins in GarageBand 10 access them from the Info-tab of the Smart Controls for the track:
Click the button to reveal the Audio units, and then click into the field to add a unit from the pop-up menu.  You may need to scroll the "Info" panel to make the Audio Units visible or to drag the dividing line between the Track area and the Smart Controls upward.
Most panes in GarageBand 10.0 can be scrolled.  If you do not see the scroll bars, they will appear automatically, when yous start scrolling. Or enable them permanently in the System Preferences > General > Scroll Bars. This is useful, as long as you do not know yet, which panes have hidden items that will need scrolling, to make them visible.

  • Updating firmware (third-party memory)

I've just spent a joyous week resurrecting my life's work, after a hideous Norton-hard-drive-erasing incident. Thanks to maclover and others for their help with that.
I've reinstalled everything and upgraded my OS to 10.4. All fine and dandy, except that my Mac will not now go to sleep when told to do so. The screen will go to sleep, but not the computer. Also, when I leave it for an hour or so, the screen will go to sleep but can't wake it up again.
While running a check for software updates, I was given the option to download a firmware update (5.1.5f). From the blurb, I understand that this should fix the sleeping issue.
Before I install it, I just want to check one thing: the instructions say to remove any third party memory before upgrading the firmware, and re-installing the memory afterwards.
Is this really necessary? I don't want to risk buggering anything up, but I'd prefer not to go messing about with the innards of my Mac if it's not necessary.
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi MiraW-
If Apple has taken the time to include that as an instruction then it is probably a very good idea.
Make sure to discharge any static before you reach in and pull out the stick(s).

  • My HD died and the Apple store installed the new drive and upgraded me to Mavericks.  I no longer have iPhoto which I miss very much.  How do I get it back and do I need it or do my pics go somewhere else? help

My Hard Drive died and when the Apple store installed the new drive they upgraded me to Mavericks.  I no longer had iPhoto.  Where do I get iPhoto, do I need it and where are my pictures going when they import???  Help I'm SO confused and frustrated.  Thank you.

    You need two items
    1 - the iPhoto application -
You install it from the App Store
2 - and the iPhoto library - restore form your backup from just before the disk died - no importing involved - simply restore and launch iPhoto and it will look in the pictures folder and open it and it will be exactly the way it was when you made the backup
As to your question Do you need it - No you can manage your photos anyway you please - iPhoto is a good way but not required - you can use any software you want and you can import photos using image Capture (in your applications folder)  or any other software you choose - If you use iPhoto then they by default going your iPhoto library - if you use other software then they go where you say to put them

  • Can the new 2014 Mini (with Yosemite) be connected to three monitors?

Can the new Mac Mini drive 3 monitors simultaneously from the two mini displayports and the HDMI port?  When reading the specs I remember reading that it could drive 2 monitors via the mini displayports.  I'm wondering if it can also drive a third monitor thru the HDMI port at the same time.

No, natively the Min can't drive three monitor.
For a third monitot you need an addition adopter like:

  • Give it to me straight -- Can the new Quad Core iMac run Maya well?

Hey all, I've been hunting around the interwebs for reviews of the new 27 inch quad core machine and I'm having a heck of a time tracking down specifics regarding iMacs and their ability to run Maya, After Effects, other adobe programs, etc.
I'm a student right now, going on four years. I own a small graphic design/animation business and I'm afraid my poor little Macbook Pro is going to keel over on me any day now. I've noticed a drop in performance in the last six months, especially with Maya and After Effects. So I've been evaluating options, and I know it has to run OSX. Windows has only given me headaches in regards to Maya work. In short, it's gonna be a Mac.
I've priced out a Mac Pro, and I'd rather not spend 3 grand on a machine that doesn't have a monitor, and may have properties that I'm paying for that I don't necessarily need: monstrous expandability, server capabilities, a big-stinking CPU footprint. But the mantra I always hear is "Only pro models can run Maya". So I reluctantly began putting away money for a new Mac Pro, uncertain if I'd be able to afford the software to go with it. Then I read this article:
    http://gizmodo.com/5411073/why-its-gotten-straight-stupid-to-buy-a-mac-pro
In my mind, this article couldn't be more perfect for my position. It's telling me, "These high end iMacs are almost as powerful as the Mac Pro you can't afford. You can save a thousand bucks off the base computer. It comes with a monitor that you don't have to pay for. " But unfortunately the one question I need answered, that I'm having a heckuva time tracking down is "Can the stinking thing run Maya or can't it?" And if it can, will it be crippled?
So, please, anyone out there, can the new monster iMac run Maya, and if it can, does it suck at it?

No, there's no way to talk to Apple technical support via email, and they probably could not or would not be able to answer any questions about performance with third-party products. I doubt that more than a handful of Apple employees, sales rep or tech, would have access to any benchmark data on Maya with any model of Mac, and those Apple people would probably be those working with the Pro VAR channel or directly with large production companies.
I just got off the phone with an Apple sales associate who emphatically confirmed that the i7 iMac can run "all that Adobe stuff", but she'd never heard of Maya.... fun....
Not terribly surprising; Maya is pretty specialized and the Apple Store phone reps are generalists working mostly with consumers. Most people running Maya would be working with an Apple VAR or would otherwise have access to specialists. You might try talking to an Apple Pro Video/Film VAR - there are a number around the country though none in Salt Lake, apparently - or asking in the Autodesk forums:
    http://area.autodesk.com/forum/autodesk-maya/
If you search for "iMac", you'll find some comments, though none I can find yet regarding performance with the new iMac models. But if you post asking if anyone has experience with Maya on the i7, you might get useful responses.
    Regards.
    P.S.
And on top of that I can't buy a 27 inch display separately
Well, you can, and they're not terribly expensive; under $400.00. But that might be more than your budget could accept, which may be what you meant. I'd elect a smaller primary monitor and go with two displays in any case, even with an iMac. I find it much better for workflow to have a monitor for the primary canvas and a separate one for tool palettes, etc.

Can the new pre installed apps in iPad 2. Like garage band, iMovie be sync back to i tune, and then sync these new apps from ipad2 to the old iPad 1?

    GB and iMovie pre installed?

Click: Browser All Built In Apps
iMovie and GB must be purchased.
If you have installed GB and iMovie on the iPad 1 and synced using iTunes, just sync the those apps to the newer iPad with iTunes. No re purchase necessary with the same iTunes account.

I backed up my iphone 4 and did an upgrade and changed my Apple ID and password but my phone has not recognised the new ID to upgrade my apps via the iphone.  How do I get rid of the old Apple ID when it comes to upgrading apps.
I have been into setting>store and signed out and signed back in and it still asks for old ID and password.

Everything you've had up to now has been tied to your old Apple ID. You cannot switch it over to a new Apple ID. You should contact iTunes support to help you with this:

  • Can the new watch be worn in either the surf or pool?

Can the new watch be worn in either the surf or pool? There seems to be no community for the watch as yet, so thought I'd put it to this forum. A bread trail has to start somewhere.
    Rob

As the watch is at least 6 months away and the device showed the other day is one step up from a prototype and Apple itself has said that the specs are not finalized yet the question can;t be answered.
As it stands now however the watch is only water resistant not water proof so wearing it in the rain and sweating on it OK, actually taking it into water (swim, shower, etc) no.

  • 27"imac with 16gb ram, wanting to upgrade to 32gb. what is the least problematic third party memory to upgrade to?

I want to upgrade from 16gb to 32 for my imac 27", release date Sept 2013. I've been reading about Crucial memory problems with random restarts and kernal panic notices as late as today on the Crucial website. Any tips on a third party memory brand that is least problematic?

I personally would steer clear of the others listedi n Baby Boomers link.  Not because they may or maynot be good I am just not familiar with them.
Just because you are not familiar w/the website, the OP should steer clear?  <Edited by Host>
For the record, I have been using Ramseeker website since 1999.  Not once have I ever had a problem w/any of their RAM.
I would never recommend a website if there were known problems w/their products.
