Can the Retina MacBook Pro Handle Itself?

Hey everyone,
I'm about to order a R-MBP. One of the reasons I am hesitant to order though is because I've heard rumors that the hardward isn't good enough to handle all the power needed for pushing the huge high quality display. Specifically, I've heard that the HD4000 and 650M are not meant to do it and that going to websites like facebook cause FPS to shoot down to ~18-20 FPS. Is this true or not?
Thanks!

the screen resolution indeed does not run at 2880x1800, thus fps for regulare apps isn't an issue, but those games (namely SC2) may use the full resolution, Civ 5 I'm not sure about if it uses that resolution or not.
(in fact, the system won't let you use the full resolution for the desktop, everything would be entirely too small if it was-- there is a 3rd party app or two that can probalby do it, but it would be silly to)
If fps in those games are not to your satisfaction, you can always run at a lower res--it'll still look very good.

  • I need a good monitor for the retina macbook pro

What is a good monitor for the retina macbook pro. Im looking for 27 inch that is around the price of the thunderbolt display. The only thing putting me off the thunderbolt display is that i wouldnt be able to watch stuff on my xbox on it due to no hdmi.
Im going to university so it would be useful to be able to watch tv and play games on the monitor too but Im more interested in a monitor that will work great on the rmbp and on photoshop. I need to be able to calibrate it perfectly.

If I am understanding you correctly you should look at the 27 inch Samsung HD LED. Best Buy has it on sale for $340

  • After are all the UI lags and stuff on the Retina Macbook Pro, is it worth getting it ? I mean is apple going to upgrade it ? EVER?

I am seriously freaking confused, i just want a good laptop that will be worth keeping for 4-5 years to come, so will apple ever fix the UI lag ? because i bought one, and after experiencing it, i returned it ! I need a laptop ASAP but i love the screen and quickness of the retina macbook pro but, scrolling and gestures lag on it , I DONT KNOW WHAT TO DO Please do help/join in.

Well they already changed the logic board on mine and reinstalled the OS several times.
Works fine on Lion oddly enough, Mountain Lion screwes everything up.
Really want the extra features of ML though....
    Windows works fine too! lol.

  • Is it normal for the retina macbook pro screen to wobble?

I have a retina macbook pro 13inch 2014 version. Whenever i play the laptop on a flat surface for the first time it wobbles a bit. Is it normal for the screen to wobble a bit while placing it on a flat surface? After that initial wobble there is no wobble.

No, that is not normal. There could be some problem with the screen.
As it is still under warranty, why not go to an Apple Shop and ask them about the problem?

  • How long does it take for the Retina Macbook Pro screen to "burn-in"?

This might be a stupid question, but bare with me.
I left my Macbook Pro Retina Display 13 inch sit on my desk for probably about an hour and a half (maybe more, maybe less). When i left i didn't close the lid because i thought it would go to sleep by itself. However. it didn't. For that whole time the screen was on at roughly half brightness. Is this an issue? In that period of time could the screen have "burned-in"?

    bday19 wrote:
...In that period of time could the screen have "burned-in"?
I guess the answer is another question: did it burn in?
If you can't see the image that was on the screen during that period when something else is on the screen, then it didn't. It's not good practice to leave it that way if you can shut it down or put the screen to sleep but I think another variable is how bright you set the screen to operate and half brightness isn't very bright, which is a good thing.

  • How many external monitors can the i7 Macbook Pro run?

I have two external 22" LCD. Can the new i7 Macbook Pro run both of these?

Yes, (assuming the minidisplay port is as capable as on the earlier models) but you will need additional hardware.
    Have a look at http://daggle.com/macbook-pro-multimonitor-4-monitors-at-once-1577 and http://www.codza.com/triple-monitor-setup-unibody-macbook

  • Can the current Macbook Pro 13 inch run Color?

Under Minimum Requirements, it says it needs a bigger display. Can it still run, even if it is a little small, or will it refuse to run altogether?

Double click on the screen icon and find out!
I doubt it, though. The minimums are pretty hard-and-fast, mostly because the UI is absolutely inflexible. There are hacks for re-setting the minimums at an OS level, but the results are unpredictable and usually result in an unusable install. Mostly because users can't read the tiny print on the buttons.

  • The buggy Retina MacBook Pro EFI version 1.0

After having installed the Retina MacBook Pros EFI version 1.0, I have severe problems in waking up the MBP. It take up to 15 seconds until the MBP is operative. Who is resonsible for such a buggy firmare? What can I do to get rid of the firmare and bring the MBP back to speed?

I've got a Time Machine backup. I just want to change the OS, not my data or software. Can I restore as you say? I've been trying to read about it and I'm definitely not a Mac noob, but it seems difficult.
    Thank you for your response!

  • Sharing my experience, water spill accident on my Retina Macbook Pro

I would like to share my experience to the community and to fellow mac users regarding my water spill accident on my 1-week fresh Retina Macbook Pro.
Before begining, i appologize for gramar or spelling mistakes since I am French and English is not my first language.
    So lets begin ...
My 2006 macbook pro started giving away and i knew that i had to replace it very soon. So i opted for a high end machine because i knew i needed something for at least 5 years.
After much thought, i bought a Retina Macbook Pro since for work i needed a 15 inch screen laptop and portability was key for me.
Normally at work the Retina Macbook Pro sits on an aluminum Rain Design stand, but on thursday, i was at a co-worker office brain-storming for an important presentation. So i had my Retina macbook pro sitting on a small conference table and next to it i had a cup of water (THE CULPRIT), 200 ml to be precise.
I know, i know ... i shouldn't have been drinking a beverage while using my computer at the same time but i'm always careful with my stuff (proof my 2006 macbook pro still lives).
So enough introduction ... After taking a sip from that cup of water i accidently spilled the cup on my keyboard. To be precise i spilled around 160 ml of tap water on the keyboard while the computer was ON (on battery).
I froze for 5 seconds cursing in French, looking at the puddle of water on my keyboard, then i immediatley FORCED shut down the computer.
I ran for paper towels and started absorbing as much as i can, while absorbing the water my fellow co-worker was helping me, and since the power button is so tiny and placed on the keyboard, he accidently turned it back ON again ... I immediatly turned it back off (forced) and kept on absorbing as much liquid as i can.
To my surprise, we kept on bringing paper towels and absorbing ...The water was just sitting on top of the computer and i had the impression that not a whole much was making it inside.
After finsihing the first cleaning process ... i placed two dry paper towels on the keyboard and closed the screen, fliped the computer upside down so it was sitting on the screen. This was on thursday. I DID NOT DISCONNECT THE BATTERY (since i did not have the necessary tools for Apple's alien screws).
Friday morning, when i arrived at the office, i checked the laptop (still haven't turned it on) ... Paper towels were wet, so i changed them ....
I left it over the weekend at work .... doing some research on water spills ... i decided not to use rice or hair dryers or opening the machine ... i estimated that what could've made it through the inside of the laptop was roughly 20 ml of water that was absorbed by a plastic sheet seperating the keyboard from the logic board.
Monday, D-day, i tried turning the laptop ON and it booted normaly ... i was a bit skeptic, i was thinking maybe the RAM modules were fried or certain keys on the keyboard or the sound controller ... but nothing everything seemed normal.
I just finished running the Apple Hardware Extensive Test and everything seems running fine.
So to all persons who will be in the same case as mine - WATER SPILL - (not coffee, cola, or sugary acidic beverages spill). Turn off the machine as fast as you can, absorb water as much as you can, flip the computer on its screen side while placing paper towels to absorb humidity, time is on your side so the more you wait the better, in my case 3.5 days, and PRAY .
The waranty is probably voided since black sensors inside the machine turns to red as soon as they contact water, (like litnus paper with acids or bases)
Hope my experience will help you get through yours ...

9 times out of 10, you cannot, will not, shall NOT get thru same,.......corrosion sets in.
Many people suffer the pain of a "dried out and working notebook"..........  only to learn corrosion will soon ruin it.
Liquid spills, why your MacBook chassis is a one-way valve for spills
After a substantial spill many people will turn their notebook upside down and shake it, not only does this not work, but it spreads liquid havoc throughout your machine and makes things often as bad as possible.
The keyboard itself acts like a one way valve in the case of a substantial liquid spill. While liquid pours into the bottom chassis easy, it does not come out easily at all, and in the case of any spill, most of it will not come out by turning it upside down. Disconnect all power and contact Apple for diagnostics and repair.
Do not attempt to, after a spill, ‘dry out your MacBook’ and test it
After a spill most people invariably try to “dry out” their notebook by various methods, including hair dryers and otherwise. This both does not work, and after a substantial spill of any magnitude, even if the liquid was water, residue is left behind.
There are additionally many very tight places inside your notebook where liquids will linger for a very long time, and cause corrosion or worse.
Immediately unplug your notebook and contact Apple for in shop diagnostics and parts replacement.
In the case of very minor spills people will “dry out” their notebook and feel success that their notebook is working ok, however invariably in nearly all instances after 4-14 days an error / fault pops up and is usually followed by more.
In case of a spill, damage estimates are impossible,.....anything can be fixed, without question.......the question is cost.
contact Apple for in shop diagnostics and cost estimation ....possible parts replacement.

  • 12" MacBook or retina MacBook pro?

I plan on purchasing either the retina MacBook pro or the MacBook next month. The MacBook is so elegant and sleek but I'm concerned about the processing specs. The retina MacBook pro on the other hand is the other way around. The specs look great but Im concerned that they will overhaul the rmbp and it will be outdated and clunky. I plan on using my computer for general web design.
Since both laptops come with 8 gigs of ram I feel like the MacBook should be able to handle what I throw at it. The rmbp has too many ports for me and is too thick and heavy, and comes with half the storage of the macbook. Is it worth it for the extra processing power? Or is the MacBook a go?
    Thanks in advance.

I would say get the macbook pro 13" if you for power and portability, 15" if you want better gaming performance or 3D modelling, manipulation or CAD design.
I myself have got a macbook Pro 13" to replace my lenovo 17" because I am an artist that mostly does drawing and 3D manipulation, which actually works better than my 2012 lenovo dedicated graphics laptop which was heavy as **** and killed my back, walking from home to the art studio and back. I am surprised that the intel Iris chipset does what I need it to do, though I wish Apple had a dedicated Nvidia graphics with the Iris like the 15" for the 13". The reason why I moved to 13" was all about portability, I can slip it in my hand bag, and the weight of the retina 13" does not kill my bad back like my lenovo did, and at home I connect it to my Mackbook Pro via HDMI  to HDTV and USB hub , and use it as a desktop, and on bootcamp, I can play Warframe with reasonable settings at resolution of my HDTV. or less depending on quality vs performance, I even played Alien Isolation with almost all High quality at my HDTV resolution . The Macbook pro is a good buy if you have portability and power in mind. I did have second thoughts before getting it since it was onboard graphics, but it has evolved since then. But if you wish to have full complete performance, you would have to sacrifice portability and get the 15" but also costs more, so you would need more money on hand. But still it is more lightweight than most regular 15" Power PC Laptops you get.
Had a look at this new Macbook, and I am not impressed with the functional specs. It looks beautifull... and it offers 3 selections of colour choices, but it is not as powerful as the Macbook Pro , the tablet CPU is the equivalent of an i3 , where the Macbook Pro has more powerful i5 and i7.
Its display is 12" and not 13" which is slightly bigger on the Macbook Pro.
It only has one port , a USB-C port, which makes it difficult to set up like a desktop/workstation at home/work , and only useful on the road. Whereas the Macbook Pro you have more ports , one for external display and another for USB hub for peripherals, such as scanner, blue ray, DVD, printer etc..
The magsafe is gone, so if you trip the wire, your Macbook would be sent flying across the room into a nearby wall, risking damage to the screen, whereas everything else would be ok as apple makes good metal bodies for laptops, and there are no moving parts inside. You charge it up with the USB-C, which makes it awkward if you wish to backup time machine on external HD , while watching Movies on your HDTV, and browsing the web while it is charging at the same time.
I think the design would have been practical if apple included wireless charging device with it.
You would need to get an Airport Time Capsule or , build up an old PC from scratch and connect it to home network with external USB drives to be file storage and backup system.  Using normal external HD, such as a Passport has become awkward.
The Macbook Pro also has SD slot.. Macbook does not.
It also has no Thunderbolt, which i thought was going to take over USB-C because its faster.

  • Seems like non retina macbook pro is more expensive than retina macbook pro!

MacBook Pro 15-inch 2.6 GHz is $2,299.00 with the Antiglare Widescreen Display now. If I wanna upgrade it with Crucial 16GB kit ($80) and 256GB Crucial m4 2.5" SSD with Data Transfer Kit ($220) it's gonna coast $2,599.00 all together.  On the other hand, with the base Retina version with the upgrades (2.6 GHz, 16GB) from Apple It only coasts 2,499.00.  I even save $100 for my external DVD burner if I want to get one. Most people say on this forum non retina is cheaper than retina MAcbook pro but I couldn't figure it out how please tell me if I am missing anything!
I have been looking for most discussions in this forum about retina and non retina Macbook pro.  Most people think that upgrading is the biggest issue with the Retina Macbook pro but can we upgrade the non retina version more than 16GB?  if we can't it's not an issue.  With the SDD I guess we can go with the external ones if we really need one and I assume that external SSD's are going to get cheaper in the time too or we can get external USB3 / Thunderbolt hard drives.  I just decided to purchase one of these Macbook pro and started looking for more information online to figure out which one is better but I got more confused because the numbers say the Retina is cheaper and upgrading is not that big of a deal but most people who know about Apple products more than me on this forum say non Retina is cheaper and it can be upgraded after purchasing it.
I might be wrong with my thoughts but I need some info about upgrading. What rigs can I upgrade with the non retina Macbook pro?
(Only RAM and Hard drive or more than that?)  I would like to know your thoughts and advises too?
    Thanks for your help!
I am thinking of getting one of these for video editing (Final cut pro X)!

Yep, the only things that you can upgrade on the non-Retina models is the RAM and the HD/SSD. I'm assuming that your calculations are correct, so you've just got to decide if you want to the Retina display model or not. For me, there have been too many issues with the Retina models to buy one just now - but I'm sure that there are a lot of happy Retina owners out there - we only hear from those having problems.

  • Retina MacBook Pro Screen Flickering

I've experienced screen flickering three times in the last week on my month old MacBook Pro with Retina Display. Each time it's happened I've had either Safari or Chrome running flash. The flickering gets worse when trying to jump to a certain time on a YouTube video and when scrolling. The issue disappears after a restart. I've tried to duplicate it on my own, but I can't. I had automatic graphics switching on and off and neither fixed the problem. I'm covered under Apple Care and I'm thinking of paying the Geniuses a visit.
I found a video on YouTube to give a better understanding of the problem. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oq0l-bHmSYE
It's identical to the video. I've not experienced any other problems other than this with my rMBP.
    I have a few questions:
Anyone experience this? If so, what did you do?
Could this be a graphics issue? If it is, can it be repaired, or will Apple have to replace the Retina MacBook Pro?
    Thank you.

Well i took mine back to Apple Store and got it fixed for free under my warranty. Mine was like 4 months old when the problem occured. If you still have Apple's warranty take it back and let them fix it, because there isn't anything you can do about it or fix yourself.

  • Retina Macbook Pro PHY MODE not connecting to 801.11n... slow wi-fi!

I've had the Retina Macbook Pro for about 3 weeks and im really getting tired of the slow wi-fi connection this past week! I tried looking at the advanced wi-fi options (opt+click on the icon) and the PHY MODE always says 801.11g. Heres the catch: I did the same thing on my iMac and it says 802.11n!
I tested this in a few ways:
speedtest on the retina macbook: 2-4 mb/s
    speedtest on iMac: 12-15 mb/s
    speedtest on iPad: 12-15 mb/s
speedtest on friends PC laptop: 10-15 mb/s
Really crappy speeds on the retina macbook right? I'm about to throw this out the window! Also, I resetted my Netgear WNR2000 router to factory settings 2-3 times just to make sure I'm not overlooking anything on there.
Any way that I can change the PHY MODE to 802.11n on the macbook? or should I bring it into apple and have them check to see if the network adapter is faulty?

    I have found a solution!
I took the laptop to apple 'genius' bar and they could not figure out the problem. They told me to download mountain lion to see if it would work. Didnt work! So there was one thing left for me to try: BUY A DUAL CHANNEL ROUTER.
After purchasing that and connecting to the 5ghz channel (make sure you're on WPA2 as well) my speeds are fast like my other devices. I'm assuming the laptop is sensitive to these things! Kinda stupid but oh well; makes sense as the channel is clear from other devices on my network.
So if you're still having these problems try buying a new dual channel router. If it still doesn't work, return the router and have apple repair your laptop (or take it back if you still can).

  • Retina macbook pro Iphoto crashing

    Hey Guys,
I am new mac user and this is my first mac ever. I have the retina macbook pro the 2.6 version with 16 gigs ram. I was trying to edit some photos from my canon 550d using iphoto but when i tried to adjust the saturation/sharpness etc the iphoto crashes almost every time, I am really disappointed with this issue as I thought my system was blazing fast and it was supposed to deal with all these softwares like a piece of cake.
