Can the TC act as a regular external drive or does it only backup what you have an your computer?

Iw ant to use the TC as an external hard drive, can it do that?  If so, how easy is it?

The Time Capsule was designed for Time Machine backups of a Mac computer.
You can use it as a regular hard drive, but access will be quite a bit slower compared to a drive that is connected directly to your computer.
It might be OK for storing regular files. I would not recommend that you store music or video files for everyday use on the Time Capsule, but you may get varying opinions on this.
If so, how easy is it?
Takes a few minutes to configure the Time Capsule using the guided set up in AirPort Utility, assuming that you have a Mac. Setting up a PC to work with the Time Capsule is lot more complicated if you want to back up the PC files.

  • My Firefox screen at the top does not look like what you show at your help site, so I can't customize or learn how to do things

I am running Windows 7 Professional and am not adept at using the Windows platform. Firefox on my computer does not look the way it is shown at specific "Help" topic pages, so I can't get the help needed. Three examples: 1. How to click on a link so it opens in a new tab; 2. How to customize the options; 3. How to get rid of the "Ask" web site window.

On Windows, you can switch between a classic menu bar and a compact menu opened with an orange button with the word Firefox.
You can switch between these using one of these methods:
    * right-click a blank area of the tab bar and turn Menu Bar on or off
    * View menu > Toolbars > Menu Bar
    * orange Firefox button > Options triangle > Menu Bar
    Does that help?
To get to the tab preferences, you can do this:
orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Options > Tabs
To remove the Ask toolbar, you can go here:
orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons > Extensions category
You might still have to do a little cleanup after removing an extension, if it changed your home page, new tab page, search provider, etc. Please describe any remaining problems in more detail.
    Hope this helps.

  • Can I use a 2tb external drive with Time Machine to backup my Mac Mini (256gbSSD + 2tbHDD)?

Can I use a 2tb external drive with Time Machine to backup what I have on my Mac Mini?
My Mac Mini has one 256 SSD and one 2tb HDD. I want to use Time Machine to do a backup of everything.
Would an external 2tb My Passport Drive by Western Digital work for the backup?
It seems like it would not work because the total storage on the Mac Mini is 2304 gigabytes (SSD + HDD).
And the external Western Digital drive is only 2048 in gigabytes versus 2304 gigabytes the Mac Mini has.

No. A Time Machine backup drive should have at least twice the capacity of the drive it backs up. You would need at least a 4 TB backup drive for Time Machine.
Might I suggest as an alternative that you not use Time Machine but a third-party backup utility that simply overwrites older files with new ones such that the backup drive can be the same capacity as the drive backed up.

  • Can time capsule also be used as a regular external HDD as well as a backup

can time capsule also be used as a regular external HDD as well as a backup

It is now and forever more a network drive.. network drives are not like external hdd. you can only access it by network.. it is not accessible by USB.
If you want to store data on it. yes you can.. should you?? hmmm probably not unless you have backups elsewhere.. if you have both files and backups on the TC that would mean you are one hard disk failure from total loss of your files.
TC has no means to backup files stored on it.. nor can Time Machine backup the TC.. so it is designed for TM backup and nothing else.
Use it to store files at your peril.

  • How can I export a project on an external drive in the latest version of iMovie?

Before the latest release of iMovie I easily managed to export a project on an external usb drive and re-import such project on a different Mac... In the latest iMovie version, however, I cannot see my drive any more..
So, how can I export a project on an external drive in the latest version of iMovie?
    Thank you in advance

I'm not sure this is the best way, but you could create a new iMovie Library, move your project to that Library, then close the library. Then move the Library to your USB drive. Then, on the other Mac, in iMovie open the Library.

Leopard.  Did a full restore from Time Machine.  Now I can't access my other internal and external drives.  I get the following error: The folder “Capture Video” can’t be opened because you don’t have permission to see its contents.  I have repaired permissions pn the main harddrive.  When I try too click on a disk I get the previously stated error.  I can't even open up information to see what permission/access there is.  It simply will not let me see the content.  It shows the content of my main hard drive when I have clicked the other harddrive's name.

    Solved:
sudo chflags 0 /Volumes/"FCP Time Machine BU"
sudo chown 0:80 /Volumes/"FCP Time Machine BU"
sudo chmod 775 /Volumes/"FCP Time Machine BU"
sudo chmod -N /Volumes/"FCP Time Machine BU"

  • Time capsule as regular external drive

I;m considering time capsule and i wanna know if it can be used as a regular external drive just for storing data

My point was he could get a network drive for less money and do the same thing if he has a wireless router. I don't consider using it just for storage as overkill. I did not say it should be used for just for TM. Mine will also be used for storage and TM. That is the point of Time Capsule it can be used in numerous ways and as a wireless base. That is a big thing with it as it is wireless. It could be used stand alone as a storage drive but you would not be using it to it's full potential by using it in that manner. If he wants to spend the money on it and use it like that is great. He asked a question we tried to answer as best as we know how. If the advice is not what he wants to hear we can't help that. Some people come on here and want to buy something without knowing all the details of what it can do. That was why I gave a link to it.
No matter what you say or call it, it is way more than a storage drive.

  • My Mac crashed. I got a new hard drive. I reinstalled Lightroom. Fortunately ircats are stored on an external drive. How do I import all of the old catalogues from external drive into a new LR catalogue. I have done it before. It has just been many years

My Mac crashed. I got a new hard drive. I reinstalled Lightroom. Fortunately ircats are stored on an external drive. How do I import all of the old catalogues from external drive into a new LR catalogue. I have done it before. It has just been many years and I can't recall how.

If you had stored your catalog files on an external drive, then all you have to do is double-click on them to open them and use them.
Or you could move them to the internal drive and double-click on them once the move is completed.
To create a single catalog file from multiple ones, you could use File->Import from Another Catalog

  • Can't update to latest build on external drive

I've installed Win 10 TP on an external drive which is essentially a 2.5" SATA drive converted to USB 3.0.
I used a tool to install it as a "To-Go" Windows. While it works fine in general use, it unfortunately complains when I try to update to the latest build. Now I've heard of similar problems with people running in VMs but this is quite different since
it's a normal install but on an external drive. Does anyone have any idea on a work around? I realize that I can't expect the update to work when I basically tricked Windows 10 to install on an external drive but as you can see, it does know that it's installed
on an external drive after the installation was done hence the error when updating.

    Hi Trixanity,
To deploy newer Windows on Windows To Go (Or on the external drive), we need to reimage the newer Windows and then deploy it to the external drive. Directly upgrade is not supported.

  • Can't install OSX Mountain Lion, on the disk selection screen i cant select the Macintosh HD to install OSX giving a message (This disk cannot be used to start up your computer).only have one disk to select and my partition map scheme is GUID partition

just bough OSX Mountain Lion, my laptop operating with v10.6.8.  Can't install OSX Mountain Lion, on the disk selection screen i cant select the Macintosh HD to install OSX giving a message (This disk cannot be used to start up your computer).only have one disk to select and my partition map scheme is GUID partition table. 24.44gb disk available.

Verify your computer can run Mountain Lion:
    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion - System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
Open Disk Utility and verify the drive is partitioned using GUID and formatted Mac OS Extended, Journaled. If it is then do this:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    Now try installing Mountain Lion.

  • How can transfer images from lightroom to LaCie external drive?

How can i export images from lightroom toLaCie external drive?

    Hi welcome!
It's possible that your description of what you want to do is a bit ambiguous.
Are you wanting to move your images from an internal drive to an external drive?
Are you wanitng to actually export images out of Lightroom with the destination being an external drive (a very different propostion to the above option)?
Is there something else that you are actually wanting to do?
Also Lightroom does not hold the images themselves.
Lightroom has a database (called a catalog) that references the location of images that have been imported.

  • Iphoto does not recognize video files when the iphoto library is on an external drive

I have copied my iphoto library to an external hard drive. I pointed iPhoto to the new location. I can import photos with no problem, but when I try to import video files (from my iPhone or from another drive) I get a message that the file is not recognized. When I moved the iphoto library back to the MAC hard drive, the import works OK both for photos and videos.
I am using iphoto 11 and all the videos were taken with my iphone.
    Any ideas?

Video could be imported from an iPhone before the library was copied to an external drive.
The video that was imported before the library was moved could be read before and after the library was moved to an external drive.
Video from the same iPhone cannot be imported into the library once the library had moved ton an external drive.
The problem is that video can no longer be imported into the library that was moved to an external drive. Photos from the same iPhone can be imported and read.
