Hi, I am thinking about purchasing the time machine. Can the hard drive on the time machine be accessed remotely over the internet?

Do you realize that if you store some of your Mac's data (photos, music, etc.) ONLY on the external Time Capsule, AND also store your "Time Machine" app "system backups" on the Time Capsule,then if the Time Capsule hard drive ever fails you will have lost the " original" and the "backup" copies of all that data (photos, music, etc.)? They will be gone forever. NOT recommended!

So many possibilities.
I am not an expert, but I have learned this much is doable:
Buy an external enclosure to re-use you old drive.
Buy a new external drive at least as large as as your intended new internal drive. Make it self-powered.
Download CarbonCopyClone (free download, relatively small).
Make a CCC clone of the original disk on the new external disk
Install the original disk in the external enclosure.
Install the new disk in the main system.
Boot from that new external drive that has the carbon copy clone. CCC will be installed on it and it will be bootable.
Use CCC on the external to directly clone back to new drive you install in the main system (the "bootable" flag will copy).
NOTE THAT AT NO TIME IS YOUR ORIGINAL DISK BEING OVERWRITTEN IN THIS PROCESS. YOU CAN ALWAYS GO BACK AND REINSTALL IT.
Step 1 makes your old disk resuable as a spare copy for "anything".
Step 2 gives you something to use as CCC for after the recovery process.
Step 3 gets the software needed for cloning
Step 4 makes a bootable saved copy of your current system
Step 5 shifts your old disk to a usable place
Step 6 positions your new disk
Step 7 boots your existing install of OSX (just from a different drive)
Step 8 puts your original install on your new disk.
Now you have a bootable larger hard drive, and a bootable copy on a drive large enough to save all you can store on your new internal drive. And you have your old disk to use for "anything".
Now you have TM backup in one place, and CCC backup in another.
Two backups is better than one, and one of your backups is bootable in case of system failure.

Leon and I installed the Time Machine does not work. to the Airport Extreme is connected MyBookWorld II. Snow leopard with everything working. Leon sees the drive, but you can not connect to it. can not be seen in disk utility. Thank you for your help or

Here's how you can potentially use your AirDisk with TimeMachine (beware that YMMV), but it should work as it works with every other "unsupported" device.
1) Mount your AirDisk so it appears on your Mac
2) Open Terminal.app
3) change directories to the AirDisk's root folder located in "/Volumes"
ie: cd "/Volumes/AirDisk Name"
4) execute this command to "bless" the drive to be used with time machine:
touch .com.apple.timemachine.supported
5) Start TimeMachine and if all went well, it should recognize your AirDisk drive and use it for TM.
This should also work on NFS shares, SMB shares, AFP shares, basically anything. It has worked up until the last developer seed, so unless they yanked this at the last minute, it should still work.
Now, the reason why Apple removed this feature may be due to the unreliability of the AirDisk, so be cautious.

How do I retrieve my iphoto library from the Time Machine back-up drive, when the original iphoto library was on a separate external hard drive that has crashed?

I recently backed up my iMAC and Simpletech external hard-drive to a 1 TB WD Passport external hard drive, using Time Machine's back-up utility. Today, I tried to access my iphoto library from the back-up drive, but received a message saying "the iPhoto library is a Time Machine back up, and so cannot be used as the main library. Relaunch iPHoto with options key held down to choose another library." Since my Simpletech died on me, what other iPhoto library is it expecting me to access? I know approximately 169 GB were backed up, and my iPhoto library is roughly 54 GB.

Thanks. I will try going through TM. Since my Simpletech is on the way out, I'll be plugging in a new external hard drive (other than the back-up drive) and trying to restore the library to the new drive. Any advice or warning if this is NOT the right thing to do?
Meanwhile, that is a great tip to do an alternate back-up using a different means. It's been tough to figure out how to "preserve access" to digital images and files for posterity, knowing the hardware will always fail/obsolesce sooner or later, and that "clouds" are only as good as their consistent and reliable accessibility. Upping the odds with redundancy will help dull the edge of my "access anxiety", though logically, it can never relieve it. Will look into
Carbon Copy Cloner.

Where do I find the Time Machine System restore app on the install DVD?

I want to do a full system restore and I was wondering if I can run the program directly from the DVD instead of booting into the DVD. Both the targeted machine (a non-DVD target-disk connected computer over FireWire) and the backup disk (external HD) are not the startup-volume off the computer I want to do the restore with. So can I use that application directly and where to find it (weird thing, all the other helper-apps from the install DVD are in the hidden folder Applications, but not this one)?

You can restore from the original disc that came with your MBP as they are machine specific. If you want to restore your OSX with the same disc that came with hold C power on and push in the disc. 10.6 users - clean and polish the bottom of the 10.6 disk (no other) with a soft clean cloth and a tiny bit of rubbing alcohol. • Insert the disk and Hold c or option/alt key down and then boot the computer from the 10.6 installer disk. • Second screen, select your boot drive and simply install OS X again. • When you get into the machine, immediately Software Update (#10), reboot and repeat until clear. Important! Force eject a stuck disk - hold the trackpad or left wired mouse button down while booting, the hardware should force eject the disk, or use Startup Manager #3 and select the disk and then use the eject key on the keyboard. Then run all the software updates, there will be plenty. Be sure to back up first. If you are trying to do a remote install on a machine that came with a different disc, there more than likely be issues. You could do it with the Snow leopard retail disc, harder to find these days and becoming quite expennsive. ATB

My MBP running Lion, has 'kernel panic' - when i try to restore a new os from the time machine, it does not cure the problem.

Question:
My 2009 macbook pro has 'kernel panic' - it is running Lion - I have visited the nearest Apple Store twice, & tried repeatedly to re-install Lion, then recover from Time Machine.
However, the problem persists - anyone have any ideas??

I'm using a WD NAS as my time machine backup drive and since upgrading to Lion the time machine won't operate with the drive. How am I to retrieve my photos and documents from it?

I realise it is the responsibility of WD to maintain the network storage interface for time machine. What is a solution for retrieving files from time machine?
When trying to re-add the drive a message said the version of the system is not supported.

Hold down the option key and select
Browse Other Backup Disks...
from the Time Machine menu in the menu bar. The menu icon looks like a clock running backwards. If you don't have that menu, open the Time Machine preference pane and check the box marked
Show Time Machine in menu bar

I have reinstalled my OS without time machine (using the disc). I want to restore some pictures in the iPhotos which are already in the time machine i was using previously. How can I restore iPhoto from previous time machine?

My mac book was incredibly slow. When I went to Mac store, they asked me to reinstall the OS with CD and not with the time machine. I reinstalled the operating system. But when I opened the applications, all those started as fresh applications as usual. I have the backup of all other data in another hard disc. But unfortunately, I forgot to copy the photos before reinstallation. I have those photos in my time machine back up. But when I opened time machine, it started like a fresh (very new) time machine and it started backing up my present OS (the reinstalled one). I cannot open the previous time machine, which is in the same hard drive. I wish to open the previous time machine to get the photos which are backed up previuosly. When opened the time machine disc (manually by clicking the icon), i can see all the thigs which I had previously in my macbook. But unfortunately, i cannot access those through time machine! Can anybody help me please?

I would like to use time Machine to back up to a network SMB drive. I can see the drive on my desktop but it will not show in the time machine window to be able to select it

The supported targets for Time Machine backups are local (direct-connected) disks, and network targets include Time Capsule, a disk hanging off the current-generation AirPort (though not earlier AirPort devices), and OS X Server systems.
The Time Machine storage is based on the HFS+ file system, so I would not expect TM to work with SMB file services.
While there are hacks to allow Time Machine to access network drives, I would not consider those to be reliable. Skim the forum and the 'net for related details, and for previous discussions of setting this up and the related issues that can arise.
Remember to test the recovery with whatever you decide to use; whole point of backups is the ability to restore the data, after all.

Please help new (senior) convert to Mac Pro (OS X). Am following the 'switching to a Mac' portable genius 2nd ed, and as it advised, I bought an external hard drive (a Mac My Word) and partitioned it with one partition for a secondary boot device and another for time machine. Book implied I needed both. Seemed to download OK but now when i plug in the external hard-drive it wants to reboot me fresh all over again. How do I keep the time machine partition going but have the secondary boot device only in case of emergencies? Do I 'eject' that partition- and if so how do I do it from outside the hard drive (I am not game to reattach it currently)

Launch the System Preferences application (under the Apple menu) and select the Startup Disk preference pane. Set your internal drive as the startup disk. Close the window.

Time machine backups to remote volumes

Hi all,
Been having trouble with backing up a Lion system onto a remote (network) volume. The idea is basically to back up a (client) Mac onto a disk hosted by another Mac (the backup server).
I can get the initial backup to work:
1. share the disk to back up to on the backup server via File Sharing, and ensure to use an administrator account at the client Mac to log onto in order for it to see the backup disk.
2. mount the backup disk over the network onto the client Mac.
3. get Time Machine to select that network disk as a backup disk.
4. start the backup.
All this works, and I am left with a good initial backup. However, subsequent backups fail with the following message after the client Mac is next rebooted:

More digging around leads to the observation that /Volumes/Rivendell-1 (the filesystem that Time Machine mounts from the backup server) is now stuck and cannot be unmounted—to get rid of it, I have to reboot the client Mac. And that the sparse disk image file Annuminas.sparsebundle is mounted read-only when Time Machine attempts to mount it for writing subsequent backups to!
The only way I can recover is to erase the backup and start another initial one, but that defeats the purpose of having a continuously running Time Machine backup.
The client Mac is running Mac OS X 10.7.2 Lion, while the backup server is running Mac OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard. The latter is really just using AFP services to export a disk to the network, whereas Lion is using Time Machine to make backups on the network disk.

Oh... discovered something odd... the Time Machine Backups volume (that is the volume that is mounted from the Annuminas.sparseimage file on the fileserver) is being mounted read-only!

How is Time Machine going to write to a read-only volume?! This is not making any sense!
If there is one thing I do know about the BSD kernel is that filesystems are mounted read-only if it has been detected by the filesystem driver that a volume is marked dirty or corrupt. Another thing I'll do is check via Disk Utility that Time Machine Backups needs to be fixed. If Time Machine is indeed making faulty sparse images, it may be due to Snow Leopard's AFP server after all.

My Time Machine will no longer find the drive I used to use to backup

For the past few months I have been using a partitioned LaCie 1tb hard drive as a Time Machine back up for my MacBook Air. The drive is plugged into a MacMini that is at my house and whilst at home my MacBook Air is connected via a wifi network and was backing up fine. After a recent software update on my MacMini I can no longer get Time Machine to work to that drive. I can connect to the drive through finder and even see the 'TimeMachine' file there, but the Time Machine itself will not find the drive so won't back up. Now, trying to set it up again to that drive it won't locate it.
I have been reading forums and have checked the following things:
My Lacie drive is mounted to the MacMini
The file sharing is set to AFP on both the MacBook Air and the MacMini
The Lacie drive is formated to Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
I have done a 'Verify Disk' and it cam eup fine
There is ample space available
There are no other files on that part of the drive
I can access the other partitioned drive just fine (e.g. my iTunes library is based on that drive and music is playing)
I only recently purchased this hard drive so I could get extra storage space and partion it for Time Machine. It all worked fine until recently.
Does anyone have any other ideas on how to get Time Machine to find this drive again?

the ipod is likely to be on automatically syncing currently. plug the ipod into a different computer and it will warn you that if you choose to sync with the new computer, the songs will be erased. when this warning pops up, select no. after the ipod appears in itunes and has not updated, go to the ipod options and you can select manually organize songs.
