Can the WD Raptor make my 2.0 Dual faster than my new 2.3 Dualcore?

A few weeks ago I had asked what would make my machine at work - 2.3 Dualcore w/2GB of RAM - slower than my home machine; 2.0 DP w/2.5GB of RAM.
The new Dualcore was unreasonably slow and I followed the few suggestions to wipe the drive, which brought it up to snuff... but I still find it slower than my 2.0 at home. At simple tasks (contextual menu pop-ups, software loading, etc...) as well as more complex Photoshop and 3D tasks.
It's not the very last generation 2.0, but the one prior, e.g. 8GB of RAM capable, PCI-Express, and liquid cooling, etc...
I doubt the .5 of RAM can make that much difference, is the WD Raptor the difference and am I just spoiled by it?
Thanks for any suggestions.

So you have a Raptor as boot in your home based Dual Processor and it seems faster than the faster Dual Core you have at work.
That's understandable, especially since the Dual Core most likely has a 7,200 RPM 250 GB slow drive (and more filled being at work, using more fonts?), plus the Dual Core shares a fronside bus, unlike the Dual Processor which has one for each. Photoshop pre-CS2 swaps memory to disk, so a faster boot drive will help. (Tiger overrides CS2's RAM limit, so more RAM will give better performance)
At home you have the Raptor as boot and most of your user files on the second drive I'm assuming, allowing you to access two drives at once using two busses.
Of course CPU intensive tasks the Dual Core 2.3 should beat the Dual 2, but since Mac OS X is heavy boot drive speed dependant (caches, swaps etc) the "User Interface feel" should be more responsive on your Dual 2, giving you the impression it's faster.
Big fat filled slow boot drives really cripple Mac OS X performance (NAND RAM coming?)
I've written a better explaination here

    No it appears to simply be an audio recorder from the description in the App store.
    You could try out Dragon Dictation as it scribes as you record.

  • I want to make my G4-450 Dual faster..  what can i do???

    G4 DP Firewire
    768mb ram right now
    30G internal HD
    70G Lacie external
    Running current Tiger
    i use it for web, design and audio production.. running all the current apps like Photoshop, illustrator, flash, dreamweaver, reason, reycle, deck & peak..
    things are working pretty good.. but i occationally get the spinning ball doing certin things in thr apps.. its funny, it happens with itunes VERY OFTEN, like when i chose a new song it can happen.. happens when clicking a new playlist sometimes.. and often when changing album info (sometimes when just clicking text to edit in itunes)
    overall im pleased with the performance with my 6 year old G4.. but i dont have the cash to upgrade to a g5 just yet, and when i do it will be another $2400 tower like i did when mine came out..
    so what is my bet options to upgrade my G4??
    ..is it true that i can get my ram up to 2G??? ..and would that improve things? ..should i think about getting a new processor upgrade?? ..are there any tips to get things faster without an upgrade??
    thanks for any help guys!!!

    Hello Patrick.
    I own the same model of G4 as you and would like to make a few suggestions from my past experience. Karl Texler did a splendid job explaining things already, I just had a couple of things to add.
    1st- Add RAM, but only 1.5GB. I had some wierd problems with my tower that ended up being having too much RAM (2GB) installed. Reducing it down to 1.5GB eliminated ALL these problems.(And in case anyone reading this was wondering, it wasn't a bad stick of RAM, just too much installed.)
    2nd- Upgrade the HD. 7200RPM and 8MB Cache minimum. 120GB is the max internally on the ATA66 bus, unless you invest in a PCI controller card. In that case you could go PATA or SATA and as large a HD as you want. SATA is noticeably faster than PATA and probably the better investment. You will also be able to use the SATA in a newer computer down the road. BTW, you can clone your current internal drive onto the new drive quite easily.
    3rd- Upgrade your video card. If you want Core Image support in Tiger, you will need an ATI 9600/9800. These cards will also benefit you if your a gamer. I would lean towards the 9600. Its cheaper, does not require an additional power source, and it runs cooler. If none of the above applies, an ATI 8500/9000 would be a good choice.
    4th- Upgrade your CPU. As Karl said above, the G4 upgrades w/2MB L3 Cache are considered best for 100MHz bus Macs. My OWC has been flawless, although I did put a quieter fan on it. The original was annoyingly high pitched, now I can't even hear it.
    I hope this helps you in your upgrading process. Please don't hesitate to ask for more info. I really enjoy the process of upgrading a computer. Dare I say Macs AND PC's. Yes, I own and enjoy both for their respective qualities.
    Happy Mac'ing.

  • Is the Core i7 processor comparable, much slower, or faster than the 2.8 Ghz core 2 duo from 2009?

    I am looking to get a new MacBook Air, but when looking at the prices I am seeing the MacBook Pro 13" for the same price and a lot more guts (RAM and Processor).  I am ok with spending the amount of money on the air if it means I get a computer that is like my iPad, which i love (flash based, snappy), but don't want it to be super slow.
    I am coming off of a 17" 2.8Ghz MacBook Pro from 2009.  I was happy with the speed and power of that machine.  The most taxing thing I did was make a complilation of family movies in iMovie and burned them with iDVD once in the 2 years of ownership.
    I mostly browse the internet and compose written documents, and keynote presentations.
    I know my questions may seem stupid, but I don't know how significant the changes between i7 and Core 2 Duo are, so I ask the question:
    I am wondering if the processing power in the core i7 will be somewhat comparable, much slower, or faster than the 2.8 Ghz Core 2 Duo I had in my 2009 computer?
    Thanks for any help!!

    Hi brosephb,
    Like you I went through a similar comparison process. I bought the MacBook air 13" and up specced the processor and memory. I don't do anything taxing enough or frequently enough to NEED the extra power of the MacBook pro.
    I am overjoyed at my air. It's gorgeous, the way it wakes instantly, it's speed and it's portableness is so endearing that I just don't use my iPad anymore. I read numerous reviews on it and the overwhelming opinion was it's addictive ease of use because of it's slim, light and rapid waking. At work I can hold the air with one hand, open it rapidly at will. It's just great but it's made my iPad redundant (for me anyway).
    I see the new airs are even faster and I'm tempted to consider selling my 6 month old air and getting the new one, but, it runs a dream so I am happy to just be envious of the new one.
    In short, unless you need the power (for your work) go for the air. I'm looking at a new iMac to use as a home work station. For the price of a new air I can get an iMac that will swallow any task for a good few years to come. And my air will suffice as my mobile companion. However, that's just me spoiling myself as, at the moment, I have no teal need for another mac. I may get the cinema display for any long winded tasks, as the screen size will help with multiple tasking.
    A bit of a ramble, hope this is useful.

  • I read on the website that the update 4.0 was supposed to work faster than the last but I that since I updated (2 days ago) my work in firefox has become quite sluggish. Any suggestions?

    Hi there. I upgraded to firefox 4 on Monday (two days ago) since I saw that the new version was supposed to run faster than firefox 3 that I was using. However, since I've started using it, I wait longer for a page to download than I had to before and the whole browser just is sluggish to respond. Any suggestions?

    Sounds like it either believes that there are headphones plugged in, or the switch is broken.
    Why in the world would you take it to Best Buy for service? Take it to an Apple Store. They can replace it on the spot if it's defective.

  • The G3 powerbook with Jaguar reads 60MB tiffs faster than G5's?????????

    i thought i was the proud owner of a QUAD G5 and 4.5 GB RAM
    and a G5 2.5 DP with 2.5GB RAM.
    Both of these once a DVD-R is placed in it takes atleast
    10 seconds to read the tiff files i have 60 MB each.
    I mean i have to wait watch the spin and the thumbnail in column view comes in more than 10 sec. sometimes 20 seconds
    i just put a DVD-R with photo files TIFFs in a powerbook G3 running Jaguar and simply clicking on the file i immediately get the image in column view on the finder??? what is happening here??? there is something wrong with the G5 or the drive or tiger or what????

    Follow-up: Over the last several days, both the Apple engineers and the Microsoft have taken a detailed look. To their credit, both companies were seriously concerned and escalated this up to the engineers quickly. The problem is at least clear as in all cases both Apple and Microsoft engineers were unable to get a test spreadsheet with 12,000 rows x 40 columns, plus one row of calculations to draw a chart or do another set of calculations in a timely manner. In all cases, (10.4 vs 10.5, Excel 2004 vs 2008) pre-Intel Macs were 10-20x faster than Intel-based Macs. Of course, Apple blames Microsoft and Microsoft blames Apple. Nonetheless, both companies did ultimately conclude that neither Excel 2004 or 2008 can handle large spreadsheets on currently available Intel-based Macs. The issue is strange in that even turning off the automatic calculations (so there should be minimal use of system resources) does not speed it up. As these spreadsheets run fine in Excel 2007 on even our old 867MHz notebook PC, we'll try Parallels and or VMFusion running Excel 2007 next. If that fails, I guess we'll have to grab up used G5's.

  • How can i sort out the N lowiest elements from an 1D array faster than using the build in sort function (1D-array) in Labview?

    I need an algorithm that is based on the same sorting-algorithm that Labview uses (or one that is just as fast) but it only needs to sort out the N lowiest elements (and the N-element output array don't need to be sorted).
    /Jonas

    I want all three zeros in the output. You can se the algorithm that I'm looking for as a soft version of Labviews own sort algorithm that only gives you the N (always less then the length of the array) lowiest values as output.If two elements contain the same small value both should be sorted out.

  • Does the 15" 2014 GT 750M model drain battery faster than the iris pro version?

    I can't decide between the 750M model or the iris pro model. I've heard the GT 750M is not worth the additional price
    as it drains the battery much quicker, is this true?

    The 15-inch MacBook Pro with the NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M also comes with an Intel GPU, which is the same GPU as the model without the NVIDIA GPU.
    This means that the battery life will be the same in both models with tasks that do not require higher GPU performance (home tasks). The NVIDIA GPU is enabled when you need more performance, so you do not need to worry about that. However, as the NVIDIA GPU is more powerful, it needs more power, reducing the battery life when it is being used

  • Can I connect a external hard drive to the TC thru the Ethernet instead of the USB port so it will transfer data faster

    I Want to connect the external hard drive so that I can transfer files faster then the USB 2.0. There is a thunderbolt to Ethernet adapter that you can buy  I I just want to know if the hard drive can be accessed thru the Ethernet line instead of the USB.  I think it will work faster than the USB.  But not sure

    It won't work.. the thunderbolt to ethernet adapter doesn't work without drivers and the external thunderbolt drive is not now or ever a network drive.
    Yes you can plug an ethernet type drive into the TC.. or into anywhere on the network.. it is after all another network drive..
    eg Another TC is a network drive.
    Seagate or WD make reasonably priced network drives. But they will not have the HFS+ format which the TC does.
    You can buy a NAS from any of a whole range of companies.. A NAS is an ethernet connected drive.
    See the reviews here to pick a NAS.

  • Can The ASM Disk Header and Disk Group Be Renamed?

    I have a requirement to mount multiple SAN clones (EMC Symclone) of a production ASM instance on the same development server. RMAN is too slow to be an option, unless I find a white paper explaining any way to make RMAN perform a clone faster than the SAN.
    The default response is normally, "Do your clone to dedicated hardware." However, that answer is not an option for obvious financial reasons, especially since I am working with a RAC environment with ~10 development and test environments.
    The only way to do this (that I can think of) is to rename the disk header and probably the disk group prior to making it available to the ASM instance.
    I have heard that Oracle has come up with an undocumented solution for one or more businesses. I believe it has something to do with the kfed library located in $ORACLE_HOME/rdbms/lib.
    Has anyone out there managed to do this? If so, can you share your solution or point me in the right direction?
    I know I am not the only one out there looking for a solution to this issue...
    Thanks in advance.

    This is absolutely possible. Can be done via kfed. I never found the answer searching the net and had to figure it out. Here it is in hopes that it helps someone else. DISCLAIMER.... If you screw up your disks don't blame me. If you have any questions about this you can email me: [email protected]
    The procedure is basically this:
    - compile kfed
    - dump the disk header with kfed
    - Modify the dump file
    - write the dump back to the disk header.
    ** Changing ANYTHING other than the diskgroup name will render your disks useless.
    Here is a script to do the work for you:
    for file in `ls /dev/vx/rdsk/as1_pccdw/asmdata*`
    do
    echo "Processing DATA disk $file ..."
    search=ASCDW_DATA
    replace=AS1CDW_DATA
    newlength=`echo $replace | wc -m`
    let newlength=$newlength-1
    shortname=`echo $file | cut -f 6 -d /`
    kfed op=read dev=$file | sed -e '24,24s/ '$search' / '$replace' /' -e '24,24s/length=.*/length='$newlength'/' > /tmp/$shortname.kfed
    kfed op=write dev=$file text=/tmp/$shortname.kfed CHKSUM=YES
    done
    for file in `ls /dev/vx/rdsk/as1_pccdw/asmredo*`
    do
    echo "Processing REDO disk $file ..."
    search=ASCDW_REDO
    replace=AS1CDW_REDO
    newlength=`echo $replace | wc -m`
    let newlength=$newlength-1
    shortname=`echo $file | cut -f 6 -d /`
    kfed op=read dev=$file | sed -e '24,24s/ '$search' / '$replace' /' -e '24,24s/length=.*/length='$newlength'/' > /tmp/$shortname.kfed
    kfed op=write dev=$file text=/tmp/$shortname.kfed CHKSUM=YES
    done

    I want to add more capacity on hard drive of time capsule. Can i add a normal usb driver? I will see it as an external drive in the time capsule network? It will work as fast than time capsule? Thanks

    Can i add a normal usb driver?
    Yes, but be sure that the drive is formatted correctly for Mac in Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    I will see it as an external drive in the time capsule network?
    The drive will appear as a shared network drive, like the Time Capsule.
    It will work as fast than time capsule?
    No, the drive will operate at about half or 50% of the speed of the Time Capsule.

  • Since Apple already has a SMS/MMS app for the iPhone, which can be used over WiFi, can the same app be installed on the iPad 2?

    I have an iPhone 3GS, and realized I do most of my SMS/MMS messaging at home, when connected to my WiFi. Then I began to think, if I'm using the messaging app over WiFi, can the SAME app (which, personally I like much better than the third party apps) be installed on the iPad 2 (which I'm still waiting from back order)?

    Incorrect.
    SMS/MMS is exchanged over the same network as calls.
    "Dumb" phones or phones not in the smart category that don't have internet access in any shape, form, or fashion can exchange SMS/MMS.
    Since SMS/MMS (a poor man's email with cell phones since it is very limited) is a cash cow for carriers and very profitable, why wouldn't cell phone carriers be interested in including SMS/MMS as an additional option (and of course at an additional expense) with a data plan only for the iPad? They certainly are interested in it but they can't since SMS/MMS is exchanged over the same network as calls.
    Get me the IPAD SMS app
    Take your whining someplace else. The self-entitlement displayed here by some is laughable.
