Last year I purchased a 27 inch imac. A good friend who is a mac guru and an MIT grad, offered to set it up for me. So I said sure. Well a year latter there are emails that I have never got, imessaging is set up (and that is something I would never do. Someone needed my apple id and password to do that. Facebook, Twitter, they are active accounts because there are active conversations going on in these accounts. Mobile Me (pics of me in a mobile me gallery that to say the least are not flattering. And a lot of other weird stuff. Anyhow, when i power up to research why my mac is starting up in a grey screen with a flashing ? mark and folder, i came accross Disk Utilities. I do have a 21 inch iMac that is set up in my office. The problems started with that one and so I bought the 27 inch. And yes my friend set up that one to. There are many folder and apps that I can not acces or have permissions to do so. My user was set up as an Admin., but when I was snooping areound, I realized that this is just an alias, and that I am being managed. Didnt know what it was at first, and didnt think much of it since apple techs told me that this light is always on, but a green light always appears on my desktop, and it only seems to happen at night, my computer is in my bedroom that is why i notice it. Back to my mac keeps apparing, so does some icons regarding remote login. If this is all in my head, thats fine, but at this point I want control of my Mac. No other super users, Administrators or root users, just me and only me. I know I will loose some stuff that hasn't been backed up but again, i don't care. My only other concern is that my internet is through comcast and he has the password for the network. and there is like 5 networks set up for just my mac. that doesnt make senseI I do have my dvd and install disc 1 and 2.I havent heard from my friend for a few weeks, which doesnt make sense, but he acted surprised when I mentioned some of these issues. But these issues seemed to get worse after I brought this info to him. Maybe Im just been nuts, but please let me know if I should just leave it all alone. Thanks

I mean... as I guy who sets stuff like this up for people, it sounds odd... If I were you, I'd back the essential files up, and wipe the hard drive. Use Internet Recovery, not your friend, to restore OS X.
Don't mention it to him, see if he asks about it like "hey, how's your Mac doing?" once he realizes he's lost access.. Assuming that's what he's up to...
But wait, you bought the 21", were having issues, so bought the 27"? Can I have the 21"?!
No but seriously, it sounds like he's one of those tech guys who wants to feel like a badass by "managing" your iMac for you, but again, I wouldn't be comfortable with that, and I'd reinstall OS X from scratch.

Protective cover as in screen protector? This would have nothing to do with the silent switch.
If you're referring to an actual case though... take the case off and see if the problem continues.
It may be as simple as the silent switch being lose, which will require a device replacement to resolve.

I just lost all recent updates to my iCal from the last days. Can this possibly happen ??? What can I do to restore iCal with the most recent updates?

Hello All, yesterday afternoon I just lost all recent updates to my iCal from the last days. How can this possibly happen ??? It may have occured after I chose the Refresh function after I had problems searching my iCal for a particular event. I think my iPhone was also not properly synched in the morning but I didn't pay it much attention and opened iCal on my MacBookAir instead.
How can I prevent this from happening again?
What can I do to restore iCal with the most recent updates?

Random glitch. It doesn't matter; if you didn't backup the data, then you can't recover the data.
In the future, for any 'important' data, back up that data regularly. Forward the 'important' text messages to your email. Trasnfer your photos & videos to your computer, etcetera.

All photos in iphoto gone - is this really happening?

OK, i have searched all day about this but no answer is working, and I see this has happened to so many people but have not seen anything super recent so hopefully there has been a fix. I just upgraded to Mountain Lion after being on OS 6.8 for a long time. Everything seems to be fine, but when I go to open iPhoto all of my thousands of photos are gone and there is NO library it can even locate. I did manual searches and everything. What have I done??? My wedding photos my vacations everything.
Why should a simple upgrade erase all of my memories?
NO....i do not use Time Machine to back anything up so please tell me that they are still in the hard drive somewhere. Worst case scenario I did back my stuff up a few years ago to an external hard drive. I was literally just this morning going to upload everything to Backblaze.com but did this first.
I am feeling like a real idiot and wish I would have known not to upgrade. Please someone help.

What version of iPhoto are you currently running? What size does the Finder say your iPhoto Library is? By default it will be located in your Pictures folder.
It's probable that the library is damaged and your photos are still there. Assuming you are running iPhoto 9 (11) do the following: apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with
Option #4 and then #1 as needed.
Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

Number range buffer - can this really be? SAP BW 710

hope you are fine!
I am looking for some real light into the number range buffering
I have extracted 2 Million data from DS 0PCA_EC_3 into a standard DSO which took inititally 13 h. (14 h in Production)
Now I figured the InfoObjects with high number range levels and enabled the buffering there.
The result is - which I can not believe at the moment and thats why I am looking first for answers before I disable the number range buffering and ran again into 13 h load - that the load took plus activation 45 MINUTES!!!!!
The Questions are:
1. Can this be possible that the performance increase so dramatically due to number range buffering?
I have not checked the SM66 for selection to table NRIV at the initial run
2. If this is realy the reason do I have to transport the settings I did in SNRO?
3. What if I decide not to use the number range buffering after some loads, is it easy to disable again without any data issue?

How can this possibly happen?

I just purchased the new ipod touch for my girlfriend. We both spent about 45 minutes setting up her account in icloud, getting her an apple ID etc. Registering the ipod, upgrading. We had to key in all the security questions, etc...In other words the ipod is totally registered under her name and password.
OK, so now we decided we wanted to get some of my music that is on my Windows 7 computer in my itunes library (I like itunes) and put them on her ipod. We connected the two and as it was supposed to it recognized her ipod. I also have an ipod and an ipad but the computer clearly was synchronizing with HER ipod.
Sure enough, the songs transferred over ok. But, later on when she tried to access the Application store it asked for MY PASSWORD because we could see on the screen that it was showing MY Apple ID and not hers. How could this happen? We had to go through about five levels of security to even set her ipod up.
I then tried putting in my password, since that is what it was asking for. It didn't work. Not we have a situation where I can't get in for her nor can she get in. This is a brand new ipod, bought yesterday.
AND WHAT IS EVEN CRAZIER - now ON HER IPOD are copies of MY MUSIC that I purchased in the itunes store AND WE DID NOT SYNC WITH. How did those songs get there? AND, we can't get them off.
I tried re-synching the ipod with the computer and they DO NOT SHOW the songs on her ipod. BUT, they are clearly there as you can see them in the music library.
What the devil is going on here? What use is all this security crap when in the end we have one **** of a mess here. It's like the two ipods are connected but she can't even get into her own applications or rather the itunes store.
Will Apple Support have to be called here? This 'set up' procedure for a first time apple user is one of the worst that I have ever seen.
How do I fix this????

M-m-m-m-m....Your idea of completey re-setting up her ipod again makes sense. But I know that when we connected her ipod to my Windows 7 computer it 'recognized HER Ipod (not mine). We did not 'restore it' because there was nothing to restore. It was brand new out of the box and had NO music on it. That is why we synched the two in order for her to get music THAT WE HAD DELIBERATELY SELECTED. BUT, somehow it also took all of the personal music that I had bought from the itunes store. Why would the software go to the troubel of asking you WHAT you wanted to synchronize and then COMPLETELY ON ITS OWN download stuff she DIDN'T want.
I can't 'fix it' right now because she is on vacation with the ipod + the music on it that she didn't want.

Cineman tools vs. afp network drive--can this really still be a problem?

I have a QNAP network attached storage device for my video clips, and Cinema Tools is throwing "error -40" when I attempt to conform a clip. Doing a search, I find this message in the archives: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5433438
It is so old that replies are no longer permitted. Yet it seems to describe precisely the problem I am having. Is it really possible that in the past 3 years, either nobody else is trying to use network drives for video, or that Cinema Tools cannot perform the basic tasks that every other app seems to do with ease, such as write to a directory that enjoys full read+write permissions?

I do have a workaround, but it is such a hack that I cannot possibly believe it. If I trim my clips down to less than 2GB each (which, I can tell you, is an enormous PITA, because if there's one thing FCP does not want to do, it is to slice and dice master clips), then, miraculously, Cinema Tools will conform the resulting clips without complaint.
Could it possibly be that Cinema Tools is even more brain-damaged than that FAT filesystem, which itself is only limited to 4GB clips? Surely somebody in the world before me has attempted to conform files of more than trivial size.

I've been having a bunch of "issues" with my OctoMac. I've got the "clicking second optical drive when restarting" problem and now the machine is seeing different amounts of RAM every time I restart.
I've got 16 GB of RAM installed. I've seen 16, 4, 8 and tonight I'm now seeing only 10 GB of RAM in the machine. Is this even possible?
I guess I'm calling support tomorrow morning, but I thought I'd share in case someone can tell me why one of my banks is only showing a single FB-DIMM...

Whenever someone reported similar problems it was either the RAM or a Riser.
For RAM, you may want to run that Apple Hardware Test for starters, but you may want to try with 4 FBDIMMs first, see if they work. Then another 4 DIMMs. Then try on one Riser, then another.
There must be memory in the top Riser, slots 1 and 2.
you can swap Risers, they are identical.
Outside of being seated fully and 'click' into place.

Format iPhone, my USB thumb drive went from W/R speeds of about 250 to 10mb/s after a while, speed went normal after format. Can this be happening to old iphones? How to format them from the ground up?

I've read that because of the way they handle files, SSDs go slow over the time unless you apply protocols to handle the empty space. I noticed in a USB thumbdrive (Sandisk Extreme USB 3.0 64GB) that ovet the time and use it went from speeds around 250mb/s to about 10, I formated (full format, not a quick erase) it and it again performs properly. I have a old iPhone 4 that became very very slow over the time, more than what I would expect from it not keeping up with iOS 7. Could it be happening something like this? Maybe formating it from the ground up would speed it up a bit (ultimately is the same kind of memory holding the OS).
Is there a way to format it like that?
I would appreciate any insight on this.

It's right at an hour (consistently), but the computer goes to sleep prior to that. It's as if iTunes goes to sleep. Also, it wasn't always this way. Originally, the movies played through without interruption. At some point, I guess a setting was changed, and now I only get an hour. Also. My energy settings are set to go to sleep at 10 minutes.

When importing images into LR5 on my laptop, the photos all have a wide yellow streak through them. This only happens on the laptop; I can import the images onto my desktop LR and there isn't the streak of colour. Can someone help?

This is happening even with photos that were taken on another camera, not just mine. My daughter told me that the laptop recently fell. The yellow streak is not anywhere else on the laptop, just on the photos in LR.

I have had this problem on my desktop. I have been attempting to reproduce it where it can be debugged. Here are some observations/facts in my environment--no conclusions:
1. I do not import from camera or memory stick directly into LR. I copy all images (using Explorer) from camera to two different locations (backup location first); and then my working area. In both cases, after files are copied I mark them Read-only.
2. Poor observation, but in any event: the issue has only occurred when I do a large number of images. Its a poor observation as I have no exact number. I suspect when I do less than 50 always works well every time. However, I have also done some very large imports without issue.
3. Error only occurs with my RAW images--for me that's NEF. I have multiple cameras--those that only capture jpg images have never had an issue in LR.
4. Even if the file is marked Read Only issues can still occur. I then remove the image from the disk using LR -- and then manually (Explorer) copy in my backup image -- re import again and all is well. I think one time I exited LR and replaced the bad file with a backup and restarted LR and all was well again.
5. When it occurs I have performed a HASH value on the broken file and on the backed up file to determine if the file contents has changed--and each time the file contents has changed.
6. I have had this occur immediately after import, but most often it occurs like this... import large number of images; Make changes in Development Module on random image, export jpg of changes--exit LR. Open up LR and file is corrupted.
7. I have had this issue on multiple USB drives ( okay just 2 different drives have been tested ).
What next--fire up Process Monitor and monitor the system (specifically LR) to see if it reports any file open for write access when this occurs. So, far I have not had process monitor actually running when it occurs--one of these days.

Contacts are synced with a compatible programme in the computer; in the iCloud or with Yahoo and Google Mail. You can directly "edit" a contact on the phone and/or within the programme that you are syncing your contacts with.
Have you configured/setup mails on your iPhone? If yes, check the contents of the mail account(s) individually. (including iCloud) from SETTINGS - MAILS, CONTACTS, CALENDARS
"Contacts" if chosen from the mail account (s) would add email addresses to your contacts.
