Can time capsule also be used as a regular external HDD as well as a backup

can time capsule also be used as a regular external HDD as well as a backup

It is now and forever more a network drive.. network drives are not like external hdd. you can only access it by network.. it is not accessible by USB.
If you want to store data on it. yes you can.. should you?? hmmm probably not unless you have backups elsewhere.. if you have both files and backups on the TC that would mean you are one hard disk failure from total loss of your files.
TC has no means to backup files stored on it.. nor can Time Machine backup the TC.. so it is designed for TM backup and nothing else.
Use it to store files at your peril.

  • My iMac was stolen in a robbery - no files via iCloud (long story).  I have a new iMac which is set up and being used - how do I recover old iMac files from what looks like back-up files showing on my Time Capsule (also being used for this new iMac)?

My iMac was stolen - but I think there's a backup on my Time Capsule (which wasn't stolen). I have a new iMac which I've been using normally; I didn't use the 'Restore from...' option at the start because I thought the Time Capsule had nothing on it.  So how do I now recover files from the Time Machine?  I can see various back-ups on the Time Capsule, from various machines - laptops, etc. - but it's not letting me open any of them to see what they contain. Does anyone know how I access this information?

    Use migration assistant.
    See http://pondini.org/OSX/MigrateLion.html
Although this is only up to Mountain Lion it is still relevant to Mavericks.. only expect Mavericks to kick and buck a lot more.

  • Can time capsule just be used as extra storage and not back up

I recently purchased time capsule 3TB can i use the time capsule as extra storage only and not as a back up?  My plan was to use TC to save all my itunes purchases (music, movies etc)?

Sure, it is possible but the following issue exists..
There is no easy backup. If you plug in a USB drive, the TC can only do a whole backup. It takes forever and with 3TB man the wait is going to be eternal as it has to write everything every time.. there is no incremental backup. If you copy the files over the network to another location, you are no better off, as you still need a second storage somewhere. And it has to be copied over the network to do it.
So think carefully as a TC has a single drive which can die any day.. and will for sure one day.. what you will lose on that day will depend on how carefully you have done backups which will require your attention.

  • Can time capsule also function as a second drive for my computer wirelessly?

Can I use my time capsule as a second hard drive for my computer if I am running out of space on my current drive?  For example - could I have my iphoto library reside on the time capsule and be mapped directly when I log into iphoto?

Definitely not recommended. Simply stated, I would never do this.
Access to the Time Capsule drive is slow, and if there are any errors when iPhoto is writing to the Time Capsule drive, the entire iPhoto library can easily become corrupted.
This assumes that you are connecting the Time Capsule to your Mac using a wired Ethernet connection. The potential for problems would be greatly magnified if the Mac was using wireless.
Another point to consider....the only copy of the iPhoto library that you have will be on the Time Capsule. When....not if...the Time Capsule has a problem, you will lose the iPhoto library unless you have a backup on another drive.
The correct way to do what you want is add an exernal drive and connect it directly to the Mac using USB or better yet, Firewire.  Move the iPhoto library over to the external drive.
Then....the Time Capsule will backup both your Mac and the external hard drive.  In case something goes wrong with the external drive, or the Time Capsule, you still have a backup copy of the iPhoto library.
For confirmation of all of this, please post in the iPhoto support forum.

  • Is there a way to make Time Capsule back-up its contents to an external hdd connected to it's usb port.

I wanted to know if there is anyway i could automatically backup my time capsule to an external drive connected to it's usb port. I tried using automator to make it copy newly added files into the external but it didn't seem to work as i had hoped and i wanted to know if anyone had any experiences in using other programs to copy the contents of one folder in the TC to another folder in a drive externally connected to the TC and also keep the contents of both folders up to date.
In short, I am basically trying to make a "raid 1" and i know that TCs dont support raid natively so thats why i asked if anyone knows of a program that could do it from the mac side.
                                                                                                         Thanks.

Carbon copy cloner might work.. expect it to be very slow.. especially if you are using wireless.
There will be various rsync shareware available.. but like your experience getting it to actually work is loads of fun.. or NOT.

  • Can I copy time capsule data and use new external HD

    Hi All-
I've been scouring the net and cant seem to find an answer. Hopefully someone here can help.
I have a Time Capsule that is nearly filled. It is giving me error messages each night it tries to backup saying that there is too much on my computer to backup.
So, I went out and bought a 4TB Western Digital external drive. I want to copy all the data from the time capsule onto the new hard drive (so I dont loose any of my older backups) and then have the time capsule use that same WD drive as my new backup.
I have seen there are ways to copy from time machine drives to new drives, but I was under the impression time machine uses a different kind of backup method than a time capsule. Is that true? Can someone point me to a place that explains how exactly I would copy the drive in the time capsule... (I understand I need to use Disk Util, but I cant get the TC drive to show up in that program)...
Also, is there a way to instruct time capsule to stop using its own internal drive and use the drive connected to its USB for the backups? I think Apple's answer is no, but I dont know if thats really the case or not...
    Thanks much-
    Daber

The backup was via an ethernet cable from the mac to the TC. (I also have it set up to run via wifi. Would that affect things?) Would there be different symptoms if the backup had stalled midway through?
Just trying to rule out a bad WIFI connection, and it will be much faster via Ethernet.
I didnt repair the backups first (I'm not really sure how to do that --- is it through disk utils and repair permissions like a normal drive?) I get nervous messing around with the "Backups.backupdb" files so I generally leave them alone.
Close. It's +*repair disk+*, not permissions. See #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum), for a brief explanation and instructions.
If the backups on the TC were corrupted, that would have been copied to the external HD, potentially causing Time Machine to start a new set.
But, I did enter time machine and saw that the old backups were there (and when I did your other suggestion of going to the browse option, it now shows two identically named backups -- one from the original TV and one from the new 4tb drive. But when I enter each they are separate backups -- the original one with the older backups and the new one with the single 1 day backup.
That confirms it -- for whatever reason, Time Machine started a new set.
You asked if there were two sparce bundles... I dont see any sparce bundles. I'm ONLY seeing the "backup.backups" folders when I mount the drives... Should I be seeing sparce bundles? Could that be an issue?
The Backups.backupdb folder should be inside a sparse bundle named the same as your computer. All backups done over a network (via Ethernet or WIFI) are done that way; those done to a locally-connected drive have that folder at the top level of the drive.
If you look at the external HD via the Finder, you'll see them; if you then double-click either, it will mount, and you can see the Backups.backupdb folder inside it. And you're right; be +*very careful+* not to move, change, or delete anything there.
I'd suggest this: Turn Time Machine off, and use Airport Utility to disconnect the external from the TC (start Airport Utility, click +Manual Setup,+ then Disks in the toolbar, then +Disconnect all Users.+ Each user will then get a message).
Then connect the external directly to your Mac. Repair the old sparse bundle, per #A5 (it will take a long time, but be much faster this way). If it has errors that Disk Utility can't fix, see the pink box in #A5.
If there are no problems, or they're fixed, delete the new sparse bundle via the Finder. That may take a while. Then eject the disk, reconnect it to the Time Capsule, and do a "full reset" per #A4 in Troubleshooting. Then re-select the external as your TM volume, and start a backup. Open the external disk via the Finder; if Time Machine again creates a new sparse bundle, you're pretty much stuck with it making a separate set of backups.

  • Can time capsule be connected wirelessly and still use ethernet ports for other devices?

can time capsule be connected wirelessly and still use ethernet ports for other devices? we have it connected wirelessly but devices connected to the ethernet ports are not working.

Not as an additional router.. the TC will be plugged into the main router via ethernet (or ethernet equivalent)..
Then the TC is setup in bridge mode. It will simply act as a Switch and HDD.
The wireless can be setup in a number of ways.
From your convenience point of view use it in roaming network mode..
you simply give the TC the same Wireless Name as the existing routers SSID.
Same security setting and password. WPA2 Personal = WPA2 AES which is the best.
But they both use different wireless channels.. normally if you leave the TC on auto it will work fine, but I prefer to control the network.. so set the main router to say 1 and the TC to 11.
You can also use a completely different wireless name etc.. that is up to you. It is still a single flat network and the only thing that is important is only having one router.

can time capsule be used on windows7

We have Macs and PCs in our house.  The mac is set up and running fine on TC/TM.
Questions is - what is the best way to also use TC to back up the windows 7 machines?
The windows machine is set up on the wireless network - but not currently sharing files.
If not practical I'll stay with the Windows external hard drive to back up that laptop.
    Thanks.
You can just connect to the TC and use a backup software.. I backup to TC using Macrium Reflect which is free for disk image.. paid for version does incremental.
Make sure you have plenty of space though on the TC for all the computers hdd usage.. with about 2x or 3x that space spare. TM uses a lot of free space and gets slow and unreliable deleting old backups if there isn't sufficient space.
An NTFS formatted disk makes good sense for a pc.. if you want to see and use the files you backup.

I have a new Time Capsule, want to  use it in conjunction with an iMac G5 and a MacBook.  MacBook runs Snow Leopard, but G5 (lacking Intel processor) can't install Snow Leopard, is stuck at OS 10.4.11.  Am I doomed?  Will appreciate any advice.  Thanks.

you should still be able to get a copy of Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard), which should run on your G5.

  • Can I access time capsule file without using imac

can I access time capsule file without using imac

From a time machine backup? No. If you mean just a regular file stored on there? Not directly. There are a couple of apps out there where you can indirectly get to a file but it's a pain. If you have need of accessing a file both from the mac and the iPad then I suggest DropBox. You get 2GB free and it's a good way to share information between machines and devices.

  • Can time capsule be used for wireless backup without serving as a router?

can time capsule be set and used for wireless backup without serving as a router?

Not if you want it to work.
If you do want stand alone .. ie a TC sitting all on its lonesome with no internet connection.. then reset to factory and start over..
The TC has to be in router mode so it can handle dhcp and addressing.
    Ignore all the problems.
BUT then you can connect your computer to TC for backup
    OR
you can connect to main wireless router for internet..
You cannot do both.. at the same time.
UNLESS you have ethernet connection.. to either main modem or TC.. if you have two networks and two different network clients, then you can do both at once but the setup is tricky.

  • Can the time capsule 2TB be used as more memory

Can the time capsule 2TB be used as more memory or is it just for backing suff up?
Can you wirelss transfer video and music to your iPhone or iPad without using the computer?

You can use Time Capsule as a 'simple' external harddisk, but keep in mind that the fastest connection with the TC is Ethernet which is slower than FireWire800 for example.
Currently iTunes and a USB-connection is needed for syncing an iPad or iPhone.
With the "PC Free" feature of the yet to be released iOS 5 (this fall...) this might not be needed anymore.

  • Can time capsule be used with windows programs

can time capsule be used with windows as a wi fi router? or dose the disk that came with the time capsule work with windows program?

The wifi router side will work fine.
The disk that came with the TC should have windows version of airport utility but you can download it.. that is important if you want to setup the TC or use the shared disk.

  • Can Time Capsule be used as regular external HD?

When I purchased Time Capsule, I specifically asked about using it as an external HD and partitioning it for backups for other networked computers (ethernet connections) as well as for Time Machine with my WiFi connected laptop.  I was told yes at the Mac reseller, but have been unable to do so through Disk Utility, where I've done this with conventional external drives. I did look at Airport Utility, but was unsure whether to proceed, so I'm asking here.
By now I'm wondering, can it be done, and if so, how?  By the way, the principal other computer I'd like to backup is a G5 Power Mac, just to be clear.  It's connected by ethernet cable, and of course, the router function works just fine.  But it doesn't "see" the exrternal drive, either.
    Thanks,
    jeff

TC cannot be partitioned.. the reseller is clueless..
The TC cannot and will not ever be an external drive.. it is now and forevermore a network drive.
Disk Utility cannot see a network drive .. it has to be handled by the OS of the TC.. which is what you see via the airport utility... and of course that has almost no controls whatsoever.
The TC is designed for Time Machine.. and TM from different computers works fine.. they each produce a sparsebundle which is a virtual disk.. so almost but not quite a partition.
So as long as you use Time Machine you are fine.
A G5 power mac on 10.5 OS should be fine.. That was the first version of Time Machine.
The issue of it actually being able to connect to the drive is something else. You might need to help it by manually mounting the disk..
And I have to admit my association with Mac is since Snow Leopard.. so if this works .. you will need to apply your knowledge of earlier OS.
In finder, use Go, connect to server.
    Type AFP://TCname or TCIPaddress.
The TC name is substituted with the actual network name.. you will find that much easier if you stick with names that are short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric .. not names that Apple uses by default.. like Fred Blog's Airport Time Capsule.. which is illegal in so many ways. Reduce that down to .. FBTC
    Then you can type AFP://FBTC
And it should be able to then find the network resources and ask for a password.. it is public by default. If you changed it then type in that instead of public. Save the password in your keychain.
