Can time capsule back up two computers running on different versions of OS?

Can I use time capsule to back up both an imac running snow leopard and a macbook air running mountain lion? I don't want to upgrade my imac (for program compatibility issues) but I would need to backup both computers, and would still want them to share the info back and forth.

Yes.

can time capsule back up iPad?

You do need to backup via iTunes, as Kappy as said, or via iCloud.
iTunes does not tell you where it actually places the backup files when you backup to your Mac or PC, but they are stored in the following places:
    Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/
    Windows XP: \Documents and Settings\(username)\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
Note: To quickly access the Application Data folder, click Start, and choose Run. Type %appdata% and click OK.
    Windows Vista and Windows 7: \Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
Note: To quickly access the AppData folder, click Start. In the search bar, type %appdata% and press theReturn key.
This is more than you probably wanted to know, but I was working on another question where a user was not satisfied to know that iTunes was backing up his iPad.....he wanted to know where the actual backup file was located.

  • Can time capsule back up an external hard drive attached to my imac and the iMac internal Harddrive

Can time capsule back up an external hard drive attached to my imac and the iMac internal Harddrive

In addition to Kappy's comments, the external drive must be formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) in order for Time Machine to be able to back it up.

  • Can time capsule back everything including pictures?

Will Time Capsul back up my pictures also?

    Why would it not?
It would be a useless backup if it failed to backup something as important as your pictures..
But it is Time Machine that is the backup program. Time Capsule is a dumb box getting the backup files.
iPhoto stores its library in strange and various ways according to version. So read up now how to restore.
    http://pondini.org/TM/15.html
Also if this is an external drive you are talking about you need to make sure it is included in the TM backup.
TM cannot backup network drives.. so having no idea where you are storing this I can only point you to actually read about how Time Machine works.

  • Can one use a Time Capsule to backup Two Computers?

Sorry for what is likely such a dumb question, but Iif I bought a new Time Capsule with 3TB of storage, could I use this to backup two different computers on our home network?
And if so, could I generate an encrypted disk image (using Apple's Disk Utility) to store the data for both computers? Worst case scenario, there's a burglary and the Time Capsule is stolen, so we would feel much better knowing that the backed up data is totally encrypted and safe.
    Thank you!

If you are asking about Time Machine backups from your Mac, the Time Capsule can easily handle multiple backups from 4-5 other Mac computers.
Time Machine will automatically keep separate backups for each Mac in a special container called a sparsebundle image, and you do have the option to encrypt the backups for each Mac.
Time Machine must backup directly to the Time Capsule drive.....it cannot back up to a separate disk image that you might create.

  • Can Time Capsule backup 2 diff computers?

Is it possible to use Time Capsule in an off ice so that it can backup two different computers? I don't want to do it if my partner will basically have access to everything on my computer. Is it possible to passwords protect the backup?

No, sorry.. there is no way for the TC to see the files.. and even if you plug the hard disk into the TC there is no mechanism in the TC to drag the files to itself.. The TC is absolutely a dumb network attached drive.. everything you want to do must be done from a computer.

  • Can time capsule back up a pc

I am a Mac person all the way, but my wife and daughter both use Dell PC's. With a Time Capsule unit replacing my current Airport Extreme would it be able to back up their data as well as my own? If it can I'lll just use my Airport extreme on my other nentwork as it is lacking on output power.

You can backup to the TC from a PC.. of course not with TM which is Mac only software. They will need to use a windows backup software.. but there are literally hundreds of those available.. the worst possible being the built in Microsoft one.
Mind you a TC is strange beastie and getting windows working well, means using SMB names.. not Apple default names with illegal characters.. so all names in the TC should be short, no spaces. pure alphanumeric.
Also note effectively storage in the TC and mixing TM backups can be in conflict so it might be worth setting up disk images before you start.
See Pondini's great instructions and KB.
    Look at Q3 http://pondini.org/TM/Time_Capsule.html
And look at FAQ and Troubleshooting from links at the top of the page.

  • Can time machine back up 2 computers

I have an iMac and a MacBook Pro and would like to know if I can use one drive to back up both computers. If so, does each computer need to be hard wired to the back up drive? Thanks

There are several ways to approach this.
You can partition the disk into 2 parts, and have the iMac use one partition, and the Macbook Pro use the other.  You woud need to manually plug the disk into each Mac one at a time.  That is to say, you CANNOT plug the drive into both Macs at the SAME time.
You could again partition the disk and have the iMac use one of the partitions, but mount it on your iMac, then enable System Preferences -> Sharing -> File Sharing on the iMac.  The Macbook Pro mounts the OTHER partition, and then tells the Macbook Pro TimeMachine to use the mounted shared file system for TimeMachine backup.
You could look at other network backup solutions (I use CrashPlan (free option) to backup from my Macbook Pro to a Mac mini in my home; also my Wife's Macbook Pro and Macbook Air, as well as my Mom's iMac (300 miles away)).

  • Can time capsule back up a windows pc?

My Time Capsule works great with the MacBook Pro.  My wife uses a Windows Vista laptop which I would also like to backup on the Time Capsule.  Is this possible?  If so, what do I need to add to the Window's machine?

You can backup windows laptop to the TC.
So I disagree with Lex.. He might be thinking TM which is Mac only software. The hardware of the TC is just a network drive..  the wisdom of it maybe in his favour though.
Read up about mixing data with TM backups.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Time_Capsule.html
    See Q3
For windows to work you need to setup the TC correctly .. ie get rid of those nasty apple names and use SMB type names, ie short, no spaces, pure alphanumeric.
Load Bonjour for windows, or the whole airport utility for windows into the laptop.
Set the file sharing on the TC to using the guest account with read and write permissions.. this is not 100% necessary but easier. But do set the workgroup correctly .. generally WORKGROUP.
And then you need a backup utility that speaks networks.. 99% do.. except MSBackup on the home edition windows.. but even the pro version is so terrible the vast majority of people would consider an hour on the rack preferable.
Buy something that actually works. There are a zillion backup softwares for windows.. just look at the reviews.
I use Macrium Reflect free edition.. which does full disk backup but you have to pay to get incremental. Works fine to TC. with caveats per the reference in pondini.

  • Help!!  Two Apps running 2 different versions of Java 1.3 &1.4

I work in the IT dept for a IBM service provider. Recently IBM has changed their web quoting tools. The main config tool runs on Java 1.3.1_08 and their new maintenance quoting tool runs on 1.4.1_2.
I have both versions of java installed and neither program will work. When I try to launch the maintenance tool that runs 1.4.1_2. The web start screen appears and then disappears and my processor performance maxes out at 100%. I have to control alt delete and then end task. When trying to run the main quoting tool , the Java applet never starts. I have tried to get technical support from IBM but they keep pushing it back to me stating that it is Java, or the machine, and they do not support that. The machine has been freshly imaged with Windows XP Professional, the system is a p3, 1.2GhZ with 512MB ram. Is there a way to make these programs work in the same environment? Thanks.

This sounds quite a bit like the problem I've been having. So far the most informative thread I've seen is here: http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jsp?forum=32&thread=363105&tstart=0&trange=15 , but the fact remains that there are a lot more people with questions than answers on this one.

You can backup different Macs with it. Just set up the two computers to backup in it

  • Will the new time capsule back up Windows on an iMac running Parallels Desktop?

Will the new time capsule back up Windows on an iMac running Parallels Desktop?

Windows home version MSBackup, cannot backup to network drives.
That was a little bonus from Bill for those who didn't fork out for Pro or Ultimate.
Like people with home versions would never need to backup to network drives.. oh no.. never!!
You need to mount the hard disk in windows for it to work.
It will help a lot if you load the airport utility for windows into your windows OS.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/dl1547
Open windows explorer and type the network address of the TC.
\\TCname.local (where TCname is the correct network name of the TC).
The TC should have all names that are windows compatible.. ie
Fred Blog's Airport Time Capsule is just wrong. It is too long, it has spaces and it has apostrophe which is illegal.
A good name for the TC is TC
The default hard disk share name of data is fine. It should not be Time Capsule or anything again that is over long .. has spaces or is otherwise incompatible with windows.
A good name for the TC wifi is TCwifi
Then you can mount it \\TC
typing that directly into the address bar of windows explorer.
There are still issues with windows naturally and running in parallels I have no idea what other issues might come up.
Tell me if you have issues.. but you will need most likely to check the network.
Open a command window and ping the TC by name and by IP address. If IP address works just mount by IP.
\\10.0.1.1 for example .. and that is the default TC IP address when in router mode.
If you still cannot access the TC my recommendation is to use a USB drive and use that.. it is 10x easier and more reliable than mixing Mac and windows backups on the TC.

  • My situation is two separate buildings 100 feet apart. can time capsule provide wireless internet in both?

can time capsule provide wireless internet service between two homes 100 feet apart?

OK.. starting to get the picture..
You should have run ethernet between the two buildings not cable.
Does the cable for the second building start inside your house.. ie do you have a termination for cable or does the second building come in directly from the street.
If you have cable link between the two buildings you can buy ethernet to cable adapters.. plug one it at each end and simply extend by plugging it into the router on the main cable link.. simple and far superior to wireless.
Otherwise you need to work out what kind of budget you want to spend to do this..
You can buy professional or semi-pro stuff from companies like ubiquiti which are far superior to domestic wireless link.. or if you want to do it on the cheap figure out what is the min speed you can live with.
I can give you instructions for using a pair of old airport.. in WDS.. or new ones.. but the new ones will cost far more and no gain.. you can usually pick up the old discus ones for $10 on ebay and they work great.
But don't try to do it without a link.. ie a specific set of AP in one house plus repeater in the other. As anything you do without making a link will just fall down or become unreliable.
You must have a pair of matched items.. You want to do this with WDS.. and you want something with good range. If you want N wireless that is fine.. but buy a pair of N wireless routers that can do WDS with full WPA2 security. eg full N wireless edimax stuff is not bad. TP-Link also not bad.. but if you want to run airplay and bonjour etc.. anything apple network then stick to apple. You will find that non-apple wireless routers will often not work with apple specific protocols.. as they are just that.. non-specified.

  • Can time capsule be partitioned so as to back up osx with time machine and bootcamped windows drive with win 7 ulyimate

have imac 27 inch.   I plan to bootcamp the drive and install win 7 ultimate to run AutoCAD. I want to backup the imac using time machine and the boot camped drive to one device.  Can time capsule be partitioned to use time machine for osx and win 7 backup for bootcamp drive.

You cannot backup a Windows partition or system using Time Machine. Nor can you partition a TC as far as I know although Airport Utility may allow that now. See:
A  whole  lot  about  Time  Machine for help with TM problems.  Also you can select Mac Help from the Finder's Help menu and search for "time machine" to locate articles on how to use TM.  See also Mac 101- Time Machine.
Of course you should carefully read the documentation that came with your TC to find out what options are available.

Can Time Machine back up a second external hard drive that is attached via usb to a Time Capsule?
    I have a iMac with 10.7.4

I want to back up the data on the external Hard Drive that is attached to the Time Capsule to the Tim Capsule using Time Machine.
Thanks for the clarification.  Unfortunately, that will not work.  You will need to connect the drive directly to your Mac if you want Time Machine to backup the drive to the Time Capsule.
