Can Time Capsule be set up to backup a PC running Vista....with no Mac?

I'm trying to help a friend, a woman in her 70's who knows nothing about computers other than using her genealogy program. She needs a backup disk to make sure she doesn't lose her thousands of genealogy entries if her PC's hard drive crashes.
Her niece gave her a 500 GB Time Capsule, and said the guy in the Apple Store said it would work with a PC. But don't you need at least one Mac to set up Time Capsule? I guess I could bring my MacBook Pro over if you do need one for setup....but how would she do her backups to her PC running Vista? Anyone know? I know nothing about PC's.
I guess if it is possible to set up, she would be using the Time Machine strictly as a wireless router/hard drive.....since she would obviously not be able to use "Time Capsule".....since that is part of OSX. Is this correct? Would she need a 3rd party backup program that is Vista compatible....or does Vista have a built-in backup program she could use. I think her genealogy program will automatically save to a backup disk when you close the program......do you think her genealogy program could be set up to point to the Time Capsule and save the backup wirelessly when she closes her program?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

1. Time Capsule comes with an AirPort Utility for Windows, so you don't have to use your MBP to set it up. If she doesn't have the disk you can find it from Downloads on www.apple.com
2. You cannot use the included backup program for Vista, as the security settings somehow don't work with Time Capsule. XP's backup program does work fine with Time Capsule, but Vista is a no go. You will either need to install a 3rd party backup program (I don't have any to recommend, sorry) or just manually copy her files to the Time Capsule (you must enable file sharing in AirPort Utility to do this).
3. I have no idea about genealogy programs, you will have to run the program and see if there is an option to save to a network hard drive when exiting.

  • Can time capsule be used for wireless backup without serving as a router?

can time capsule be set and used for wireless backup without serving as a router?

Not if you want it to work.
If you do want stand alone .. ie a TC sitting all on its lonesome with no internet connection.. then reset to factory and start over..
The TC has to be in router mode so it can handle dhcp and addressing.
    Ignore all the problems.
BUT then you can connect your computer to TC for backup
    OR
you can connect to main wireless router for internet..
You cannot do both.. at the same time.
UNLESS you have ethernet connection.. to either main modem or TC.. if you have two networks and two different network clients, then you can do both at once but the setup is tricky.

  • Can Time Capsule be used just for backups -- without being connected to a wireless network?

I have a second-generation Time Capsule that I no longer need as a wireless router. However, I'd like it to wirelessly (and automatically) backup our family's iMac and MacBook Pro. Is that possible?

Thanks very much, Bob and LaPastenague,
I ended up replacing the wireless Netgear Router (which Time Warner installed last May) with my older (second-generation) Time Capsule -- and it works flawlessly.
I guess I was afraid that since it's a few years old that it wouldn't work -- or work as well, as the new Netgear wireless router.
In fact it works better - the range is much better. And the issue my new iMac had, of losing connection with the network (though the little wifi icon never indicated it had in fact dropped) has evaporated.
Thanks for the help! Just shows that Apple rocks in every way.

You probably can, but this type of configuration is not recommended or supported by Apple.
Two cautions if you want to try this:
    1)  The Time Capsule has to be configured to "Join" your existing wireless network in this type of setup...and to do that, you must know the exact type of wireless security that your network is using.
    2)  Backups are likely going to take twice as long. The wireless signal must travel from your computer to the wireless router and then from the wireless router back to the Time Capsule.  Two "hops"......even if the computer is located close to the Time Capsule.
If you want to try this, we can tell you how....but with no guarantees on your results....since this is not officially supported.

  • Can I use my Time Capsule to set up multiple networks, or just one?

Can I use my Time Capsule to set up multiple networks, or just one?  We'd like to offer the internet to clients who are at our studio, but don't want them able to access all our computers, so a second network for them would be useful.

    Two big IFs here.
Not all versions of the Time Capsule have Guest Networking capability, so it might be a good idea to verify that first. Can you provide the model number of your Time Capsule.  it's on the bottom of the device.....starts with an "A" followed by four numbers.
Next, assuming that the Time Capsule has Guest Network capability, the next requirement would be to verify that your modem is compatible with the Time Capsule for that feature.
Basically, you need a simple modem.....not a modem/router or gateway device that is often furnished by Internet Service Providers.  If you are not sure what you have, post back with the make and model number of your "modem" and we'll see if we can find some details ont he device.

  • Can Time Capsule be used for Backup of Iphone

Can Airport Time Capsule be used for Backup of Iphone & ipad

The iPhone and iPad cannot back up directly to the Time Capsule.....they only back up to iTunes on your Mac or PC....or....to iCloud.
If you are using Time Machine to backup your Mac to the Time Capsule, then all of the backups of your iOS devices in iTunes will then be backed up to the Time Capsule.

  • Can Time Capsule backup an Airport Extreme's attached USB hard drive?

Can Time Capsule backup an Airport Extreme's attached USB hard drive (without currently being attached to a MAC OSX LION system)?

No, sorry.. there is no way for the TC to see the files.. and even if you plug the hard disk into the TC there is no mechanism in the TC to drag the files to itself.. The TC is absolutely a dumb network attached drive.. everything you want to do must be done from a computer.

  • Can time capsule also be used as a regular external HDD as well as a backup

can time capsule also be used as a regular external HDD as well as a backup

It is now and forever more a network drive.. network drives are not like external hdd. you can only access it by network.. it is not accessible by USB.
If you want to store data on it. yes you can.. should you?? hmmm probably not unless you have backups elsewhere.. if you have both files and backups on the TC that would mean you are one hard disk failure from total loss of your files.
TC has no means to backup files stored on it.. nor can Time Machine backup the TC.. so it is designed for TM backup and nothing else.
Use it to store files at your peril.

Can I use Time Capsule ONLY as a WiFi backup disk w/out having to configure it as my main router with my Internet modem?
Yes, you have two options here, each with advantages and disadvantages.
Option 1...connect the Time Capsule to your AirPort Extreme using an Ethernet cable connection. Turn off the wireless on the Time Capsule since your AirPort Extreme is already providing wireless.
Advantages...easy to configure, you can backup either over wireless or plug directly into one of the Ethernet ports to backup large files 3-5 times faster than wireless.
Disadvantages...none, except it requires a wired Ethernet connection to the AirPort Extreme.
Option 2....configure the Time Capsule as a wireless only hard drive.
Advantage.....you can locate the Time Capsule anywhere you want as long as it can receive a good wireless signal from the AirPort Extreme.
Disadvantages....harder to configure, backups will occur only over wireless.

  • Can time capsule keep backup files that are removed from my computer

Can time capsule keep backup files that are removed from my computer? I am a photographer and have a ton of files that take too much space on my computer. I'd like to have a backup of them but keep them off of my computer. Does time capsul allow this?

files you remove from your computer will be removed from your time machine backups sooner or later.
better store important files on an external HD which, if connected directly to your computer and given enough space on your TC, can be backed up using time machine.

  • HT1178 Time Capsule used as External Hardrive Backup

If I want to use a Time Capsule as an external hardrive backup for my MacBook Pro, how do I do it?
What cords do I need and can I get it to back up wirelessly?  I don't want my own wireless from it,
because we already have it in the house - I just want my own storage unit and I have one, but no
cords to go with it.  Need to get cords - which ones?

This is out of my area of expertise, but I believe you can set the Time Capsule up so it doesn't generate a network, but is on the existing network.
Then you can back up to it wirelessly.
You should still do the first backup via an Ethernet cable if at all possible, as it will be 2-3 times faster than WIFI, but then backups can be done without having to connect the cable.

  • I just set up my Time Capsule and would like to back up my old MacBook with Tiger (10.4.11) to it

I just set up my Time Capsule and would like to back up my old MacBook with Tiger (10.4.11) to it so I can access the files with out taking up space on my new MacBook Pro.  Since I've purchased this time capsule I've heard that using it as a "server" it not ideal, but at this point I don't have a lot of other options.  Any advice on the best way to back up my old computer and be able to access these files from my new computer??

Open Macintosh HD and look for the Time Capsule icon under the SHARED heading on the left side of the Finder window
Click on the Time Capsule icon and a folder representing the drive will appear to the right. The folder will be named "Data" unless you have changed the name of the drive.
You may need to click Connect As in the upper right hand corner of the window and enter the Time Capsule device password to get the folder to display the first time that you do this.
Once the folder is displayed, double click the folder to mount the drive on the desktop. You can drag/drop files onto the icon. This is going to be very tedious, but it can be done.
I would suggest that you look at an application like Carbon Copy Cloner to automatically backup the files that you select. Then you can schedule the applcation to automatically backup any files that have changed each day.

  • Can Time Capsule be used as an external drive but not a router

Greetings,  I have a spare 1TB older Time Capsule that I would like to give to a friend who would like to use it as an external hard drive w/time machine.  They currently have a current iMac with Comcast internet and router which they would prefer to continue using for internet access.  My question is: can a time capsule be set up to be used as an external backup drive without using the router capability. Thanks for any advise.

My question is: can a time capsule be set up to be used as an external backup drive without using the router capability
    Yes
Connect the Time Capsule to the Comcast router using a wired Ethernet connection from a LAN port on the Comcast router to the WAN port on the Time Capsule and set it up to create a network.
Then, go back in using AirPort Utility and turn off the wireless function on the Time Capsule. The Time Capsule will operate as  "bridge" in this type of setup, so it will not perform as a router.

  • Can time capsule be used on windows7

can time capsule be used on windows7

We have Macs and PCs in our house.  The mac is set up and running fine on TC/TM.
Questions is - what is the best way to also use TC to back up the windows 7 machines?
The windows machine is set up on the wireless network - but not currently sharing files.
If not practical I'll stay with the Windows external hard drive to back up that laptop.
    Thanks.
You can just connect to the TC and use a backup software.. I backup to TC using Macrium Reflect which is free for disk image.. paid for version does incremental.
Make sure you have plenty of space though on the TC for all the computers hdd usage.. with about 2x or 3x that space spare. TM uses a lot of free space and gets slow and unreliable deleting old backups if there isn't sufficient space.
An NTFS formatted disk makes good sense for a pc.. if you want to see and use the files you backup.
