Can Time Capsule be the wireless router for my MacBook Pro and my iMac G5?

My MacBook Pro was simple to hook up to Time Capsule, but now my iMac G5 will not connect to the internet. Any ideas?

Hello bluefeather. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
How do you have the iMac G5 connected to the Time Capsule (TC) ... by Ethernet or wirelessly? If wirelessly, try connecting via Ethernet ... can it access the Internet now? What version of OS X are you running on the iMac?

We use a 2TB Time Capsule as our wireless airport for the whole house but we can't get the signal to all rooms.  Is there anyway to boost the signal?

You to purchase an extreme or express and use it as wrieless extender.. that is the only way Apple provided for boosting the signal.

  • Can time capsule boost the wireless network without beeing connected with cabel, hence wirelessly?

Can time capsule boost the wireless network without beeing connected with cabel, hence wirelessly?

Yes, providing that the wireless network has been created by another Apple "n" router.
The "extend a wireless network" feature on the Time Capsule is not compatible with devices from other manufacturers.

I am a first time user of the new airport extreme time capsule 2TB. I use a macbook pro and imac. I installed the router today and got on wirelessly. BUT I cannot get my 2 printers that were previously wireless to find the router signal. The worked fine on my current set up OS Mounitain Lion 10.8.4.  Apple tells me it is the printer mfr issue and printer companies tell me it is apple issue. Any help appreciated.

    Arguably, they're both right.
Changing your router changes everything, so your best course of action is to research the respective printer's documentation and determine how to reset them to factory default condition. Then, add them again using System Preferences > Print & Scan.
For that, I recommend you first "reset the printing system" according to these instructions: Mac OS X: How to reset the printing system. Its instructions for Lion are identical to those for Mountain Lion.
As the article states, it will remove all your existing printers, leaving the Mac's printing system in a similar "factory default" condition ready for you to create a new print queue for each printer, which you should probably do.
Apple's printing support documents contain a great deal of redundancy, but this one may be a good place to start: OS X Mountain Lion: Set up a printer to print wirelessly

  • Wireless Router issues with MacBook Pro and Windows XP laptops

    hello,
I have a d-link wireless router and I have a MacBook Pro and a Windows XP laptops. My issue is that I have to keep rebooting either the router or the modem (which I both replaced) and it still does not work right. Now can mac and windows work simultaneously through a wireless router (d-link) with no issues?

My problem is that every time I log off either computer, and when I start it back up up again I have to reconfigure all over again for both laptops to get connected to the internet. I called the d-link people and they pretty much said if i still had problem to go their web sites and download their firmware (which I have that version) so I am running out of options because I just can't turn either of them on with out reconfiguring it. Now I am using WPA on them. Could that be the issue? But right now I do not know. This is my first mac and I am getting a little irritated by this. Overall I like the mac except for this little issue. Does that help?

  • I am thinking about getting a Time Capsule. Can I store a movie on a Time Capsule without the movie being on my MacBook Pro?

Hello, I am considering buying a Time Capsule to store movies and other files on so my hard drive isn't full of stuff all the time. Can I store movies on my Time Capsule even if they are no longer on my MacBook Pro?

    To add to nijinski's comments,
    1) I know i can plug in an aiport express and use it as an thing for speakers in another room, but if i copy my music to a time capsule then can do it? or does it have to be on my mac or laptop?
You could store your iTunes Library on the Time Capsule (TC), but understand that the TC was primarily designed to be a combination router and target destination for Time Machine (TM) backups. It can perform as a NAS or media server, but these are not its strong suite of features. For example, while a backup is being performed, streaming performance will be affected. Since, TM backs up (at least) once an hour, this could get to be problematic.
    2) can i split my time capsule into 2 so i can back up my laptop and mac on it? Or do i need to go with a airport extreme and get an external harddrive?
If your goal is to partition the TC's internal hard drive, you would have to temporarily remove the drive to do so as the AirPort Utility (nor Disk Utility) allows for paritioning this drive when installed.
You CAN backup multiple computers (both Macs & PCs) to the TC, but would have to rely on different backup applications in order to do so. TM backups will NOT overwrite any existing data stored on the TC's hard drive. Another option is to connect one (or more) external USB hard drives to the TC's USB port. You can then dedicate the TC's internal drive for TM backups and use the external drives for other purposes ... like PC backups.
At present, the only issue with going the attached drive to an 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) is that Apple does not support this configuration for TM backups.

  • Using time capsule as a wireless storage drive on MacBook Pro with Tiger

I'm getting a time capsule 1Tb for xmas, do I just plug it into one of the ethernet ports on my wireless router/modem? What I plan to do is take all my data (itunes files, invoices, pictures etc) off my MacBook Pro (which only has a 150 Gb hard drive) and use the time capsule as wireless data storage. I will obviously need to back up the original data on the TC to another storage drive. Can I use the usb port on the TC to connect another external hard drive to back up to, or do I need a external hard drive with an ethernet port? And do some hard drive manufacturers ship their drives with software which automatically backs up data from other external drives even when the computer isn't turned on? Thanks for any answers.

No idea on TC at all.

Yes & no, the Computer has to be on, but these drives come with several Backup tools...

Yes, configure the Time Capsule to create a wireless network using the exact same wireless network name and password as the Linksys wireless network.

  • Can time capsule be connected wirelessly and still use ethernet ports for other devices?

can time capsule be connected wirelessly and still use ethernet ports for other devices? we have it connected wirelessly but devices connected to the ethernet ports are not working.

Not as an additional router.. the TC will be plugged into the main router via ethernet (or ethernet equivalent)..
Then the TC is setup in bridge mode. It will simply act as a Switch and HDD.
The wireless can be setup in a number of ways.
From your convenience point of view use it in roaming network mode..
you simply give the TC the same Wireless Name as the existing routers SSID.
Same security setting and password. WPA2 Personal = WPA2 AES which is the best.
But they both use different wireless channels.. normally if you leave the TC on auto it will work fine, but I prefer to control the network.. so set the main router to say 1 and the TC to 11.
You can also use a completely different wireless name etc.. that is up to you. It is still a single flat network and the only thing that is important is only having one router.

  • Since I've upgraded to Maverick the airpot utility does not recognise that there is a time capsule on the wireless network. I can see the TC using the air port utility on my iPhone5 and on my iPad. What am I doing wrong on my macbook?

I have over 250G backed up and I really don't want to reset everything and start again.
Not sure what you mean here.
A reset will not affect any of the data on the Time Capsule hard drive.  You would have to perform a completely separate and very deliberate Erase Disk operation for that to occur.
I'm not recommending that you perform a default reset, but it is an option if there is really nothing else to try.
I don't know if what you are seeing is a Mavericks issue or not, since I refuse to use any new software until at least the first major update with fixes comes along.
Another user may be able to offer more input on Mavericks.

  • Setting up Time Capsule as primary wireless router and enabling port forwarding

I am attempting to setup my Time Capsule as the primary router on my wireless network. I have an Actiontec Verizon FIOS router that I am connecting the TC to using ethernet, and I was then going to turn off the wireless function on the Verizon router so that the TC will be the only wireless router. I am not exactly sure how to go about this, and I also have to connect a wireless device to the TC that requires a static IP address and port forwarding enabled so that I can access from my iPhone. I am completely lost on how to do this, any help will be greatly appreciated.

Unless Verizon has made a major change in the last few days, you will not be able to use the TC as the primary router......simply because it is not possible to configure the Verizon router to act as a simple modem......which is what it must do if you want to have the TC act as the primary router on your network.
As LaPastenague has explained. turning off the wireless on the Verizon modem/router will not make it a modem.  It will still be a wired modem/router in charge of the network, not allowing the Time Capsule to take over the role of main router for the network.
But, let's assume that I am wrong. Please check with Verizon support and ask them........
    1) If it is somehow now possible to configure their modem/router to act as a simple bridge mode modem. If they say that this is not possible (or they will not support this).....
    2) Ask them if they can provide you with a simple, bridge mode modem......instead of the modem/router that you have now. A simple modem will have only one Ethernet port, and it will not offer any type of routing or wireless service at all.)
