Can Time Capsule be used as an external drive but not a router

Greetings,  I have a spare 1TB older Time Capsule that I would like to give to a friend who would like to use it as an external hard drive w/time machine.  They currently have a current iMac with Comcast internet and router which they would prefer to continue using for internet access.  My question is: can a time capsule be set up to be used as an external backup drive without using the router capability. Thanks for any advise.

My question is: can a time capsule be set up to be used as an external backup drive without using the router capability
Yes
Connect the Time Capsule to the Comcast router using a wired Ethernet connection from a LAN port on the Comcast router to the WAN port on the Time Capsule and set it up to create a network.
Then, go back in using AirPort Utility and turn off the wireless function on the Time Capsule. The Time Capsule will operate as  "bridge" in this type of setup, so it will not perform as a router.

  • Can time capsule be used as an external hd?

I ran out of space on my iMac and bought the time capsule to work as a backup drive and to use for extra storage, but it doesn't mount on the desktop.

Check the box for it in the General tab of the Finder's preferenes.

  • HT201250 Can I restore photo files from Time Machine without the use of an external drive?  I'm trying to restore lost photo files and I see them listed in Time Machine (without use of an external drive), but when I try to restore I get a error code 36.

Can I restore photo files from Time Machine without the use of an external drive?  While I was transferring photos back and forth from a thumb drive something went haywire and my IPhoto was wiped clean!  When I click on Time Machine I see all the dated pages (without an external storage drive connected), go back to a date where all my photo files are there, click "restore", and I get the message:  "The Finder can't complete the operation because some data in file cant be read or written (error code - 36)"

Thanks so much Terence.  I tried some of the fixes from that page, but then discovered the suggestion to compress the Time Machine Back up of the original library and transfer it as a zip back to my computer as detailed here:

That worked like a charm.  I really appreciate it.

  • Can time capsule be used for wireless backup without serving as a router?

can time capsule be set and used for wireless backup without serving as a router?

Not if you want it to work.
If you do want stand alone .. ie a TC sitting all on its lonesome with no internet connection.. then reset to factory and start over..
The TC has to be in router mode so it can handle dhcp and addressing.
    Ignore all the problems.
BUT then you can connect your computer to TC for backup
    OR
you can connect to main wireless router for internet..
You cannot do both.. at the same time.
UNLESS you have ethernet connection.. to either main modem or TC.. if you have two networks and two different network clients, then you can do both at once but the setup is tricky.

  • Can Time Capsule be used as regular external HD?

When I purchased Time Capsule, I specifically asked about using it as an external HD and partitioning it for backups for other networked computers (ethernet connections) as well as for Time Machine with my WiFi connected laptop.  I was told yes at the Mac reseller, but have been unable to do so through Disk Utility, where I've done this with conventional external drives. I did look at Airport Utility, but was unsure whether to proceed, so I'm asking here.
By now I'm wondering, can it be done, and if so, how?  By the way, the principal other computer I'd like to backup is a G5 Power Mac, just to be clear.  It's connected by ethernet cable, and of course, the router function works just fine.  But it doesn't "see" the exrternal drive, either.
    Thanks,
    jeff

TC cannot be partitioned.. the reseller is clueless..
The TC cannot and will not ever be an external drive.. it is now and forevermore a network drive.
Disk Utility cannot see a network drive .. it has to be handled by the OS of the TC.. which is what you see via the airport utility... and of course that has almost no controls whatsoever.
The TC is designed for Time Machine.. and TM from different computers works fine.. they each produce a sparsebundle which is a virtual disk.. so almost but not quite a partition.
So as long as you use Time Machine you are fine.
A G5 power mac on 10.5 OS should be fine.. That was the first version of Time Machine.
The issue of it actually being able to connect to the drive is something else. You might need to help it by manually mounting the disk..
And I have to admit my association with Mac is since Snow Leopard.. so if this works .. you will need to apply your knowledge of earlier OS.
In finder, use Go, connect to server.
    Type AFP://TCname or TCIPaddress.
The TC name is substituted with the actual network name.. you will find that much easier if you stick with names that are short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric .. not names that Apple uses by default.. like Fred Blog's Airport Time Capsule.. which is illegal in so many ways. Reduce that down to .. FBTC
    Then you can type AFP://FBTC
And it should be able to then find the network resources and ask for a password.. it is public by default. If you changed it then type in that instead of public. Save the password in your keychain.

  • Can time capsule be used as an external hard drive for storing media

Can you use it in such a way that you put movies and music and home vidoes on there to be accessed on when on the network along with using it for backing up data.  Could it be used in such a way that you  can access your files when on wifi from anywhere?

TC is not designed to be a NAS.. principally it is lacking any means to back itself up. And TM cannot backup a network drive.
If you put data on it like your movies and music in raw format that is fine.. if you put your itunes or iphoto etc library on it.. you will find it is slow to start, quick to stop, stutters and has issues. Also wireless frankly is just not that good.
I am not sure how far away is anywhere?? Do you mean remote access? That is possible via btmm using icloud.
The problem is, TC is not a media player.. it is a dumb as a board hard disk in a router.
How are you going to play your videos or music unless you move itunes library onto the TC??

  • Can Time Capsule be used as a NAS Drive?

I would love this to store my music and then have my Sonos and PC use it for access. My expectation is that it will be as quiet as my iMac, hence the interest.

Dave--sorry to be nitty--I want to be sure what you asked. Are you saying that the TC can be properly used as a stand-alone NAS that plays well with a Sonos? It was my understanding that with a hard drive attached to the USB port of an Airport Extreme, music would cut off if the computer to which it was all attached was powered down. Most of my music is on my iMac, so I haven't tested the drive-attached-to-an-Airport Extreme version of this hypothetical, but that was what I last heard.
Since I'm in the market for a new laptop, I'm in the mood for new backup, and if a TC with 1TB is available, and will work with my Sonos when one or both computers are powered down/off the network, that'd be stellar.

  • Can the time capsule be used as an external hard drive

Can the time capsule be used as an external hard drive

If you mean by usb to a computer no.. it is a network device only and has to be used via ethernet or wireless.
It can be used standalone,, ie not plugged into an existing network.. but there are some steps required to make it work if you want internet connection at the same time. It is generally much easier to have the TC bridged into the network.

  • Can time capsule be used on windows7

can time capsule be used on windows7

We have Macs and PCs in our house.  The mac is set up and running fine on TC/TM.
Questions is - what is the best way to also use TC to back up the windows 7 machines?
The windows machine is set up on the wireless network - but not currently sharing files.
If not practical I'll stay with the Windows external hard drive to back up that laptop.
    Thanks.
You can just connect to the TC and use a backup software.. I backup to TC using Macrium Reflect which is free for disk image.. paid for version does incremental.
Make sure you have plenty of space though on the TC for all the computers hdd usage.. with about 2x or 3x that space spare. TM uses a lot of free space and gets slow and unreliable deleting old backups if there isn't sufficient space.
An NTFS formatted disk makes good sense for a pc.. if you want to see and use the files you backup.

  • Can time capsule be used with windows programs

can time capsule be used with windows as a wi fi router? or dose the disk that came with the time capsule work with windows program?

The wifi router side will work fine.
The disk that came with the TC should have windows version of airport utility but you can download it.. that is important if you want to setup the TC or use the shared disk.

    Q3 http://pondini.org/TM/Time_Capsule.html
It is extremely important you realise.. the Time Capsule was never designed for this.
It is a backup target for Time Machine.. that is the software on the computer that does backups.. it has no direct connection to the Time Capsule.
It has no ability to back itself up.. unlike all other NAS in the market. It is therefore likely one day you will lose all your files unless you seriously work out how to backup.
The TC is slow to spin up the hard disk and fast to spin down. iTunes and iPhoto will continually lose connection to their respective libraries.
iPhoto in particular is easy to corrupt when you move photos over wireless into the library.. once corrupted all is corrupt. A single photo will ruin it all.. so backup is utterly essential.
Time Machine cannot do backups of network drives. ie the TC. You will need a different backup software like CCC. You will then need another target to backup to..

This means that your NAS does not support the required encryption. Update your NAS to the latest firmware or ditch it and buy a Time Capsule (they are the most reliable when using TM).

Cannot reinstate catalog after returning PC (Windows 7) to factory settings (because of worm infection). Catalog was backed up on external drive but not using PSE backup facility. Cannot find and *.tly file. Is this hopeless?

If you made backups of all of your photos and your catalog file using some third-party method (i.e. not using the PSE catalog backup command), then you should be able to restore everything.
Step 1. Put the photos in the EXACT SAME LOCATION as before. For example, if they were in subfolders of C:\Users\<username>\Documents, then they must go into the exact same subfolders of C:\Users\<username>\Documents.
Step 2. Move the catalog file to wherever you want it to be, and then double-click on it.
