Can Time Capsule connect without Ethernet Cable?

I currently have RoadRunner service to get Internet with my Mac, connecting my Ethernet cable to my Time Capsule. I want to replace RR with a Clear Network mobile hotspot. Is it possible? Both it and the TC are WiFi devices.

I have a Airport network at home with a Time capsule connected via ethernet cable to modem. Also the network is extended wirelessley with an Airport Extreme. I now wish to add a second Airport extreme but am considering a hard wire connection with 100 ft of cat 6 cable from the Time capsule to the second Airport extreme.  Can my network operate properly to extend the network with both a wireless and wired extend functionallity?

I now wish to add a second Airport extreme but am considering a hard wire connection with 100 ft of cat 6 cable from the Time capsule to the second Airport extreme.
    Excellent plan.
Can my network operate properly to extend the network with both a wireless and wired extend functionallity?
Yes, but don't get confused about the second AirPort Extreme, as it would not be configured to "extend" a wireless network.....it would be configured to "create a wireless network" using the same wireless network name, security settings and password as the Time Capsule network. Configure the second Extreme in Bridge Mode.
This Apple support document will show you how to hookup and configure the second AirPort Extreme:

  • Can time capsule connect to ethernet through airport extreme and then send wifi on a different band ?

    Hope this makes sense.
At the moment, an Airport Extreme (n) is connected to a single wall outlet by ethernet and sends wifi signals at both 2,4 and 5 GHz.
I would like to add a Time Capsule (also n), position it immediately next to or above this Airport Extreme and connect to the AE with a very short ethernet cable (so not extending the Extreme's wifi signal since that could reduce the signal's strength by half).
This way both are connected to the internet by ethernet (the AE directly to the wall outlet, and the TC to the AE's ethernet out), hence both should be able to send wifi at full signal strength.
In order to achieve full wifi strength I would then set the Extreme to (only) send at 2,4 GHz and the Capsule to (only) send at 5 GHz.
Please note that the house has an open (loft style) floorplan, so there's no reason to position the AE and the TC at a distance from each other for wifi reach throughout the house.
Dear Bob, what do you think? I've been reading up but didn't find a directly related post.
Is this the right way to go about it?
    KInd regards.

I would like to add a Time Capsule (also n), position it immediately next to or above this Airport Extreme
The position immediately above is poor.. and next to each other is even worse.. you are blocking the antennas from one side or the other..
Please  use a patch lead of around 2M (6feet) min.. and place them that far apart.
very short ethernet cable (so not extending the Extreme's wifi signal since that could reduce the signal's strength by half).
Having the devices link wirelessly causes the speed to drop by half which is caused by double hop wireless.. it does not reduce signal actually.. but you can have interference issues.
The gap between two radio transmitters is so they don't flood the receiver on the unit next to them.. It has nothing to do with the room. If I stick two transmitter/receivers next to each other they need some space. It is also to give full access to the antennas which are spaced around the sides on the older N models.
You also cannot turn off one band.. If they are dual band models.. ie Gen3 AE and later. Gen2 TC and later.. they are permanently dual band. You cannot do anything about it.
You can simply set the channels.. although auto should work.. there are 11 channels for 2.4ghz.. set one to channel 1 and the other to 11.
At 5ghz there are heaps of channels.. set one to 36 and the other to 149.. or whatever is available.
You are not going to achieve anything much doing this unless you have more clients than bandwidth.. ie both boxes can fully service internet to up to 10 clients.. maybe more if each band is used properly.. you will gain nothing using two routers next to each other.

  • Can the time capsule works without WLAN cable connected to my DSL router?

Cna the Time capsule work without WLAN cable connection to DSL router?

WLAN is usually used for wireless LAN .. plainly you mean WAN port ..
How do you expect to get internet if the TC is not connected to the internet?
The TC can work stand alone.. true enough but that will then involve considerable issues in setting up two different IP addressing regimes .. you can just bridge the TC and use it as WAP and switch plus hdd without having to route.

  • Can i unplug time capsule from the ethernet cable and still use it??

can i unplug time capsule from the ethernet cable and still use it??

I have tried to extend that wireless line but as soon as i remove the LAN cable i have no internet connection anymore. So basically, does the TC get the signal wireless from the router??
The Time Capsule can wirelessly extend a wireless signal....but only if it is being provided by another Apple AirPort wireless router.
If the "main" rotuer there is not an Apple AirPort router,  you will need to connect to the network using a wired Ethernet connection.

  • I CANNOT PRINT FROM MY IPHONE 4 TO MY BROTHER 8890DW PRINTER WHICH IS CONNECTED TO MY TIME CAPSULE/NETWORK VIA ETHERNET CABLE???

Why can’t I print from my iPhone 4 to my brother 8890dw printer which is connected to my time capsule/network via ethernet cable???  My iPhone does not even locate my printer, even though I have no problem printing from my Mac to the same printer.

Typing in all caps indicates shouting, is considered rude and is difficult to read.  Many simply do not read such posts.
You would need an airprint enabled printer or an app that proides printing function.

I am trying to setup my Time capsule via a ethernet cable as a back up for a new iMac. The on button on the time capsule set up window keeps failing to stay on. Any ideas what to do?

A PC can have more issues connecting than a Mac.
But it really should not matter.. so just try it in situ.. press and hold the reset.. once it starts up, it will return to default IP, 10.0.1.1 the PC should then be able to find it via the airport utility.
If not drag it over to the Mac and plug in there by ethernet.. or since it is a laptop, really should not be that difficult to drag the Laptop and plug it into the TC.
Important thing is to get access to the TC.
The Mac if it is running lion, then you MUST download and install 5.6 airport utility to do anything useful.

  • I am unable to set up my new Time Capsule with my BT Home Hub - every time i connect the ethernet cable from Wan port to Home Hub, the internet signal drops

    Hi there -
I've just purchased a new Time Capsule, and would like to set up a small home network with my Laptop, iMac and wireless printer. I'm following the first steps, but as soon as I connect an ethernet cable between the WAN port of the TC and the ethernet port of the HH, my BT internet connection drops out and I have to restart the HH. Upon which point it drops out again. The airport utility can see my TC, and gets as far as me typing in the new network name and setting up a password, but then it can't quite get through to the next stage. All the time it's just flashing amber.
    Please help!

Setup the TC in bridge mode before you cannot it to the HH.
Simply do the setup fully in isolation. And do it by ethernet.
Setup wireless to create a wireless network.
You can use either same SSID =Wireless name as the HH .. same security same password.
Or use a different name and setup.. totally up to you.
Update the TC and then plug it into the HH by ethernet.

  • Can time capsule connect to Huawei E398 4g modem

Can I connect a LTE 900 Mhz, Huawi E398 modem (4G) to my Time Capsule?

    Sorry, but no.
The Time Capsule needs an Ethernet connection, which the Huawei does not provide...according to their specifications.

  • Can Connect to Printer through ethernet network cable, but not through Time Capsule connected to ethernet

I am a lone Mac user in a very large, unsympathetic institution.  If I plug my MacBook Air into the ethernet cable in my office directly, I can print through the office printer.  If I plug the ethernet cable into a Time Capsule and connect my Air to the capsule wirelessly I cannot print to the office printer.  I can access the internet, so I know it isn't a problem with any of the hardware or the wireless connection.
Is it possible that the network, because of Time Capsule, shuffles me into a different subnet than the printer?  Why would it do this?  How would it know?  Is there any kind of fix possible?  (I use the Thunderbolt port to connect my Air to a monitor, so I can't use it to connect to an ethernet cable).
    Thanks.

Thank-you very much for this.  How do I tell if it is in routher and bridge?  How do I change it?
Tell me the IP address when you plug into the main network and can print..
Tell me the IP address when you connect wirelessly via the TC.
If they are the same IP range.. then you are on a bridged TC.. if they are different. Then you are on router mode TC and should bridge it.

  • How can I backup my mac on a Time Capsule (connected with ethernet), without any user logged on the mac?

Time Machine by default does not run when no user is logged in, there's some way to let backups run without any user logged on the mac?
I need to backup 3 iMac connected through ethernet network to a Time Capsule.
    Some hint?

If you use eithernet for your main connection then just plug the TC bridged into the network.
If you use wireless for your internet connection then you can use the TC isolated from the network by ethernet.. but this is really only convenient on a desktop Mac.
The instructions I put in this thread with screenshots.. see near the bottom.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4817218?tstart=30
It is a bit tricky so if you have questions ask back here.
Just to say a USB for firewire external drive is faster and more reliable than a TC.. cheaper to buy as well.. although since you already have the TC that is not a concern.. but you can ebay the TC and buy a bigger and better external drive with the proceeds.

  • How do I access my time capsule using a Ethernet cable connected to my pc?

I am trying to access my saved files on my time capsule. I don't have internet so I'm trying to use an Ethernet cable.  I'm using a PC laptop not a Mac.  I have no idea how to access them.

Load the airport utility for windows.. as that helps by loading the bonjour for windows service.
Then open windows explorer and type the IP of the TC directly which you will find in the airport utility.
\\10.0.1.1 (that is default.. replace with whatever the actual is).

  • Time Capsule connectivity issues with cable modem

I have Comcast internet service (coming through a Linksys CM100 modem, no router) plugged directly to a 2TB dual-band TimeCapsule. In the past this has been working, and the TimeCapsule has been providing internet access to three Macs, as well as backing them up. I also have an AirPort Extreme base station (not the dual-band one but not the 2003-era UFO-shaped one either) that has been connected to the TimeCapsule over house ethernet to provide wireless through the rest of the house. Last night my connection kept dropping out. I could connect to one wifi network and it would not work, then I would connect to the other and it would work for a while before stopping. I have disconnected everything and then replugged only the cable modem and my TimeCapsule. When ethernet is plugged directly into my iMac from the modem, I get an internet connection without issue. When I plug it into the TimeCapsule, it reports an internet connectivity error. It says it gets no IP address, and no DHCP setting that I provide it with alleviates this message.
I'd be gratful for any suggestions on how to fix this issue. I don't really want to wipe the TimeCapsule completely, as it contains our backups to last July.

When ethernet is plugged directly into my iMac from the modem, I get an internet connection without issue. When I plug it into the TimeCapsule, it reports an internet connectivity error.
Because cable modems associate and "remember" the device with which they have established a connection, they need a complete reset whenever you change the device that is immediately connected to them.
Push the reset button, If present, on your modem
    Power off the modem
Pull the battery if it is easily accessible
Power off everything else on the network, order if not important
    Wait at least 15 minutes
Make sure that the Ethernet cable from the modem is connected to the WAN port (circle of dots icon) on the Time Capsule
Power up the modem and let it run 2-3 minutes by itself
Power up the Time Capsule the same way
Power up each of your other devices about a minute apart
Check for proper operation the network.

  • Macs not seeing Time Capsule connected via Ethernet to router

Just bought a new Time Capsule to replace one where the hard disk failed.  I have a fibre router which is my primary WiFi network and the Time Capsule is connected to that by Ethernet.  The Time Capsule shows up in the Wired connections of the router so I know that the router can see the TC.  I have the Time Capsule set up to supply a separate WiFi network under a different SSID for legacy purposes as I have devices that are configured to that SSID before I got my new router.
The new TC will not backup successfully unless the Macs are connected to the TC SSID, failing with the message that the Backup Disk cannot be found.  This is different from the behaviour of the last TC where the Macs would see the network drive even when connected to the router SSID.
I'm sure there is a simple setting that I'm missing that would just make this work, but I can't work it out...

There are some issues which have popped up with the TC and some routers.. particularly that the WAN connection is not working correctly.
Try using one of the LAN ports on the TC and see if that helps.
Also open the Network utility in the computer and run the netstat scan .. it looks like this.
Locate the TC on the computer that is having issues.
Then ping it.. use the full domain..
eg in terminal mine is ping tcgen4.local
I think you should rename the TC to all smb names.. ie short, no spaces pure alphanumeric as it simply works better.
Then if the TC shows up in the ping, mount the hard disk manually,
In finder, Go connect to server and type
AFP://TCname.local (use the full domain name of the TC from the netstat scan).. or use the IP you get when you ping it.. although that is going to keep changing unless you can lock it.
