Can Time Capsule Function as an Internet Router for Wired Clients?

I have a 1st Generation Time Capsule with three Gigabit Ethernet LAN ports. Currently the Time Capsule is connected to a 12-year old Linksys router which connects with my DSL modem and functions as the router for the Time Capsule and several other wired devices connected to the Linksys Ethernet ports.
Can I get rid of the Linksys and use the Time Capsule as the Internet gateway and router for the whole network? All the documentation I've been able to find seems ambiguous. For example, a knowledge base article, "Airport Utility 6.x: Connect to the Internet using PPPoE" (http://support.apple.com/kb/PH5099) says "...Time Capsule...uses DHCP and NAT to share that IP connection with computers on your wireless network. (emphasis mine).
If I can use the Time Capsule as a wired router, and I want to connect more than three wired devices, can I connect them to the Time Capsule via an Ethernet switch?
Thanks for your help!

The Time Capsule is both a wired and wireless router, so it can connect to a modem and function as the main router for the network.
If you do not need the wireless function of the Time Capsule, the wireless radio can be turned off manually once the device has been configured. If you need more Ethernet connections, a 5-port, 8-port, 16-port etc. Ethernet switch can be connected to one of the LAN <-> ports on the Time Capsule.
If your Linksy is currently configured to connect using PPPoE settings, then the Time Capsule will need to be setup to provide those settings in order to connect to the Internet. Most DSL providers require a user name and password to establish the PPPoE service.

Can I use Time Capsule without changing, to keep my Telstra router for conection to the internet?

You can either bridge the TG or the TC.
For the TC.. I explained it in the previous post.. and it is posted again and again and again.
For the TG782T.. open it directly from a pc.. select configuration wizard and choose bridge.. it is as easy as that.
Then setup pppoe client for the TC with your Telstra username and passwork.
Post again in Whirlpool forum if you have issues.
    Either dsl hardware or bigpond.

  • Can Time Capsule replace my old wireless router?

I would like to use time capsule as my router. But when I plug it straight into the phone line, I lose the internet connection. Can this be done?

    Hi,
You cannot connect the Time Capsule directly to a telephone line. Normally, an ADSL or cable modem is connected to the WAN port.
Is your existing device a combined ADSL modem and wireless router? Any details about the model and the type of service?

  • Can Time capsule be used a normal router?

and I would like all my macs to connect to the internet as well. Is this possible? thanks

To answer your original question, yes Time Capsule can be used as a normal router. Think of it as a router with a built in hard drive. And yes all your Macs can connect to it to share Internet.
Now as for your second question, how are you accessing the Internet right now? Because you can't connect the Time Capsule to your phone jack on the wall. I'm assuming you're using some kind of DSL. If so, then you need to connect your DSL modem to the Time Capsule, not Time Capsule to your phone wall jack. Then you'll be able to share and connect with all your Macs. Make sense?
Time Capsule has ethernet ports (bigger "phone" jack), take the ethernet cable from your DSL modem and plug it into the WAN ethernet port of the Time Capsule.
If you're on dial-up, then you can't share Internet with all your Macs. (Actually you could, but it's going to be painfully slow and not worth it)

  • Can time capsule be used to store files for future retrievel (not backup but storage)?

My MacBook Air is full and would love to store the currently unecessary files in the time capsue for future retrievel. Is this posible and will it be a practical solution? The nature of the files is mostly photos and documents. Will the time capsule hard drive appear as a reguler file from which I can reitrieve any stored file wtihout orignally having it on the Macbook? Thanks a lot.

What Niel is saying is that if you move "original" files from your Mac to the Time Capsule, the "originals" are now on the Time Capsule.......and you have no backups for those files when.....not if....the Time Capsule has a problem.

  • Time Capsule does work as a router for Vista

    Hi
I have a time capsule for my mac, which are also used as a router for PCs with XP and 7 without any problems, but I cannot connect from a Vista PC.
When I choose search for connections, the router is shown, but when I try to connect nothing happens. In some circumstances the wireless radio is even turned off during the process.

See answer to your other same question.
Please do not double post questions on the forum.

  • Would time capsule be a fast enough router?

I have a imac desktop running safari and a windows laptop running windows xp(802.11g). My laptop is to slow running off of airport and Im not happy with airport as my only router. I need a router and a external hard drive. Would time capsule be a fast enough router for me?

Time Capsule is just another Airport Extreme Base station with a hard drive (ok, that's slightly simplistic), so if the laptop can only connect at 'g' speeds, I wouldn't expect any difference from the Time Capsule.
Do you have an Airport Base Station or are you sharing the Airport connection from your iMac? I'm not sure, but I'd think you'd get slower performance from the latter. If ABS, is the network configured as g-only or b/g compatible?
Maybe there is something wrong with you laptop configuration.

  • Can I Use My Time Capsule as a 2nd Wireless Router? Pls Help

Thanks for trying to help. I have a Time Capsule that I'm currently using to back up my files. My next door neighbor is willing to share his internet with me for half the monthly cost. He already has a wireless router and I can connect to it (no probs) except the signal strength is not so powerful since I'm a couple feet far from his router. I was wondering if I can use my Time Capsule to hook up the internet via WIFI through his wireless router (that way I have a stronger signal strength from my Time Capsule). Basically using my Time capsule as a 2nd wireless router.
Neighbour's wireless Router = Time Capsule = My Macbook
If I can please tell me how to set this up in details please. thanks for your time.

You are trying to set up the Time Capsule as a Wireless Router
and Repeater? - To share an existing wireless network, wireless?
The AirPort Extreme was capable of repeating (like a transceiver)
to and from an existing wireless network, to expand upon it; but
only did this with another AirPort product, such as an Express.
The Time Capsule and many of its features are outlined here, with more
information: AirPort + Time Capsule: http://www.apple.com/support/airport/
You may have to direct your question regarding expanding an existing
wireless network, to the Discussions section for the specific products.
Usually, the "extend a network" wireless feature in the software setup
    only applies to the use of a second Apple AirPort-type base station;
such as the Extreme, Express, etc. The compatibility is between the
AirPort-like Apple products; but a bridge could be made if an Express
were attached to the other wireless network via Ethernet cable, then
the Time Capsule may be able to see it. This would require testing.

Nope, the time capsule is a router, but it will still need access to the outside world (Internet) by way of a modem.

  • Can time capsule be used for wireless backup without serving as a router?

can time capsule be set and used for wireless backup without serving as a router?

Not if you want it to work.
If you do want stand alone .. ie a TC sitting all on its lonesome with no internet connection.. then reset to factory and start over..
The TC has to be in router mode so it can handle dhcp and addressing.
    Ignore all the problems.
BUT then you can connect your computer to TC for backup
    OR
you can connect to main wireless router for internet..
You cannot do both.. at the same time.
UNLESS you have ethernet connection.. to either main modem or TC.. if you have two networks and two different network clients, then you can do both at once but the setup is tricky.

  • My situation is two separate buildings 100 feet apart. can time capsule provide wireless internet in both?

can time capsule provide wireless internet service between two homes 100 feet apart?

OK.. starting to get the picture..
You should have run ethernet between the two buildings not cable.
Does the cable for the second building start inside your house.. ie do you have a termination for cable or does the second building come in directly from the street.
If you have cable link between the two buildings you can buy ethernet to cable adapters.. plug one it at each end and simply extend by plugging it into the router on the main cable link.. simple and far superior to wireless.
Otherwise you need to work out what kind of budget you want to spend to do this..
You can buy professional or semi-pro stuff from companies like ubiquiti which are far superior to domestic wireless link.. or if you want to do it on the cheap figure out what is the min speed you can live with.
I can give you instructions for using a pair of old airport.. in WDS.. or new ones.. but the new ones will cost far more and no gain.. you can usually pick up the old discus ones for $10 on ebay and they work great.
But don't try to do it without a link.. ie a specific set of AP in one house plus repeater in the other. As anything you do without making a link will just fall down or become unreliable.
You must have a pair of matched items.. You want to do this with WDS.. and you want something with good range. If you want N wireless that is fine.. but buy a pair of N wireless routers that can do WDS with full WPA2 security. eg full N wireless edimax stuff is not bad. TP-Link also not bad.. but if you want to run airplay and bonjour etc.. anything apple network then stick to apple. You will find that non-apple wireless routers will often not work with apple specific protocols.. as they are just that.. non-specified.

  • Can I access the data backed up on my time capsule remotely via the Internet?

Can I access the data backed up on my time capsule remotely via the Internet? Let us say I have all my music or photos on my time capsule at home and I want to access it while I am outside over the Internet can I do this?

    See remote access methods here.
    https://discussions.apple.com/community/wireless/airport?view=documents
I am not sure what format these files are in.. but if they are itunes or iphoto.. have a care.. it is easy to corrupt them.

  • Can time capsule also function as a second drive for my computer wirelessly?

Can I use my time capsule as a second hard drive for my computer if I am running out of space on my current drive?  For example - could I have my iphoto library reside on the time capsule and be mapped directly when I log into iphoto?

Definitely not recommended. Simply stated, I would never do this.
Access to the Time Capsule drive is slow, and if there are any errors when iPhoto is writing to the Time Capsule drive, the entire iPhoto library can easily become corrupted.
This assumes that you are connecting the Time Capsule to your Mac using a wired Ethernet connection. The potential for problems would be greatly magnified if the Mac was using wireless.
Another point to consider....the only copy of the iPhoto library that you have will be on the Time Capsule. When....not if...the Time Capsule has a problem, you will lose the iPhoto library unless you have a backup on another drive.
The correct way to do what you want is add an exernal drive and connect it directly to the Mac using USB or better yet, Firewire.  Move the iPhoto library over to the external drive.
Then....the Time Capsule will backup both your Mac and the external hard drive.  In case something goes wrong with the external drive, or the Time Capsule, you still have a backup copy of the iPhoto library.
For confirmation of all of this, please post in the iPhoto support forum.

  • Time Capsule & ADSL Modem - Losing Internet Connection

My ISP is Earthlink which I access via a DSL connection. I use a Zyxel P-600 series ADSL modem to connect and recently purchased a Time Capsule to replace a NetGear router & separate network drive. Since installing time capsule, I've been losing connection to the Internet. I have the Zyxel set in "bridge mode" so there should be no interference with TC acting as a router. I also was experiencing disconnects with the NetGear router but not as often. Ideas?

How does the computer connect to your internet connection??
What type is it? Modem? Router? Wireless? ADSL?
You are not giving away any information. We need something to work with.
TC are designed to plug into a modem or router by ethernet. If you have wireless only internet they can join the network but it kills the functionality down to slow useless wireless client.
