Can time capsule keep backup files that are removed from my computer? I am a photographer and have a ton of files that take too much space on my computer. I'd like to have a backup of them but keep them off of my computer. Does time capsul allow this?

files you remove from your computer will be removed from your time machine backups sooner or later.
better store important files on an external HD which, if connected directly to your computer and given enough space on your TC, can be backed up using time machine.

Every time I try to open a pdf file from a website or through an email it will not let me opne the file. I can open files that are saved to my computer but that doesn't do me much good in some scenarios. I run IE 10 on Windows 7 Home with Adobe Reader XI 11.0.04. I have tried unsinstalling and reinstalling. It works fine for a few days then the errors start again. HELP!

I don't believe this is possible, but you can deauthorize all your computers and start over if you are concerned.

Assuming that you synced the photos from iTunes - or whatever downloaded means - you must use iTunes again in order to remove the songs from the iPad. You have to uncheck the albums in the photos folder that you sync from in the Photos tab of iTunes and follow that with a sync.

Can time capsule also function as a second drive for my computer wirelessly?

Can I use my time capsule as a second hard drive for my computer if I am running out of space on my current drive? For example - could I have my iphoto library reside on the time capsule and be mapped directly when I log into iphoto?

Definitely not recommended. Simply stated, I would never do this.
Access to the Time Capsule drive is slow, and if there are any errors when iPhoto is writing to the Time Capsule drive, the entire iPhoto library can easily become corrupted.
This assumes that you are connecting the Time Capsule to your Mac using a wired Ethernet connection. The potential for problems would be greatly magnified if the Mac was using wireless.
Another point to consider....the only copy of the iPhoto library that you have will be on the Time Capsule. When....not if...the Time Capsule has a problem, you will lose the iPhoto library unless you have a backup on another drive.
The correct way to do what you want is add an exernal drive and connect it directly to the Mac using USB or better yet, Firewire. Move the iPhoto library over to the external drive.
Then....the Time Capsule will backup both your Mac and the external hard drive. In case something goes wrong with the external drive, or the Time Capsule, you still have a backup copy of the iPhoto library.
For confirmation of all of this, please post in the iPhoto support forum.

Can Time Capsule keep up with a clone?

I have a MacBook Pro 2.0 GHz that only has a 75 GB harddrive which I am about to upgrade to 500 GB. I also have a Time Capsule (1 TB). If I were to clone my laptop's harddrive onto the new drive and switch out the drives, what will happen with my Time Capsule? Will it simply continue backing up my harddrive without missing a beat or will it consider the new harddrive all new data? Will it remember how things looked on my old harddrive from before I installed the new drive or would I lose those past restore points?
Given what I am about to do, is there an argument here for not doing a cloning of my harddrive but instead doing a full restore from my Time Capsule onto the new drive? Or should I even consider doing a fresh install?

You can backup windows laptop to the TC.
So I disagree with Lex.. He might be thinking TM which is Mac only software. The hardware of the TC is just a network drive.. the wisdom of it maybe in his favour though.

For windows to work you need to setup the TC correctly .. ie get rid of those nasty apple names and use SMB type names, ie short, no spaces, pure alphanumeric.
Load Bonjour for windows, or the whole airport utility for windows into the laptop.
Set the file sharing on the TC to using the guest account with read and write permissions.. this is not 100% necessary but easier. But do set the workgroup correctly .. generally WORKGROUP.
And then you need a backup utility that speaks networks.. 99% do.. except MSBackup on the home edition windows.. but even the pro version is so terrible the vast majority of people would consider an hour on the rack preferable.
Buy something that actually works. There are a zillion backup softwares for windows.. just look at the reviews.
I use Macrium Reflect free edition.. which does full disk backup but you have to pay to get incremental. Works fine to TC. with caveats per the reference in pondini.

i am very new to time capsule, and have the following issue i would like to get solved/understand:
1. when i want to access my time capsule disk through the normal finder window, clicking on the time capsule icon to the left, it appears that finder tries to connect, but then i get a connection failed message. only when i access it through go>connect to server> etc, it appears as a disk. Now I would like to know, if the connection established that way (through connect to server) is actually connecting via internet, instead of using the direct wireless connection to the disk (I'm sitting right next to my time capsule)?? In the case it is using the internet to connect my time capsule, for sure my connection to the disk should speed up, as soon as i get the connection through wireless, isn't it? For the rest everything works just fine, internet connection wirelessly with airport, etc.
2. I am transferring data from an old backup disk to my new timecapsule. i have this old disk connected to mac my through usb, and drag n dropped the files on the time capsule. the copying process is fairly slow, but still faster than connecting the old disk directly to the usb slot on time capsule. Is there any way of directly transferring data through the usb slots from my old disk to my time capsule? it would be so much faster.....

Hmmm... my Time Capsule folder resides in my Shared Folder under Finder. It mounts a few seconds after I click on it. I've never had to +connect to server+.

Unfortunately, you will not be able to continue to use this Time Machine backup in this manner. TM utilizes a sparsebundle when backing up to a NAS (Time Capsule) which is very different from a backup into a folder structure if the HDD is connected directly to your Mac (USB HDD). Your TM back ups will still be available on your USB HDD, but you are better off starting an entirely new backup on TC.

Can I delete tmp-archive files that are really large?

I have two extremely large files. I'm trying to take back some memory (only operating with 2 GB free space, and that's not good).
Ran Disk Inventory X to see my largest files, and found these two gems with 32.25 and 44.62 GB.
Now, I've been to one link I found discussing possible solutions:

However, I'm not super tech savvy. Basically, to try and see if another program would clean these up, I downloaded both TinkerTool System and Main Menu. Ran each of them, but neither cleaned up those files.
Are they essential files? Does anyone know if I can delete them?

In that location, there is usually just -caches and -tmp directories with no other folders.
Their presence would result from an old installation that has not cleaned up after itself.
Those two files have been there a long time; since 2011.
Given that you are short of disk space, deleting them would be a good idea, by dragging them to the trash, but you will need to be in an Admin account and you will have to supply your password to complete the operation, given that they have been installed by the system.

Can I share my iCloud files that are stored with friends? How?

I don't understand iCloud at all. I just know it apparently automatically gets stuff off my phone and ipad and stores it so I am always backed up.
Am I able to actually SEE my backed up files by going to "iCloud"?? Like going to a web page and seeing an index of all my files and folders? Sorry to be so dense.
Can I store files from my computer there? If I can, how do I do it?
Can I give access to my files on iCloud to my brother or friends? How would I do that?

iCloud is a service that is designed to sync your contacts, calendars, reminders, notes, Safari bookmarks, and iWork documents between your devices. It also will stream your photos between your devices, back up your iOS devices, provide you with an iCloud email account and allow you to locate your devices if they are lost.
It isn't a general file storage service, and as such will not store individual files or allow others to access them. There are many other cloud-based services that provide that, including the ones mentioned here: http://www.wilmut.webspace.virginmedia.com/notes/missing/inicloud3.html.

I can't drag and drop files that are already on my desktop

Files and images that are already on my desktop will not respond when I try to 'drag and drop' them, for example into the trash or iPhoto.

Importing video files that are NOT from your camera

Is this possible? I have a video file in my library that was taken by cousin and I cannot for the life of me add it to my project. Please help!

I don't know what format you are using, but we also got a video from a PC that had been edited on that platform. By running it through a freeware program called Handbrake (this doesn't allow for URLs, but you can get it easily by searching Handbrake for video), I was able to convert the original format into a .mov file that would open in iMovie. You may want to try it. We tried some other programs to convert it, but HB was the only one that synced the audio correctly for us.

Can I re-download video files that are "pixelated"

I have a few MLB.com videos from iTunes, but some of the video pixelates and would be considered substandard. Can I delete the file from my iTunes and re-download the file at no cost?

Contact the iTunes Store customer support department through the form linked from the bottom of their web page and explain the problem to them. If the problem is in the copy they got from MLB, then they'll have to try and get a new copy which may take some time.

When I open notepad files that are attachments from a webpage, is there anyway to have them open immediately every time rather than ask if I want to open/save and then having to click OK?

I have checked the "do this automatically" box and it makes no difference.

Tools > Options > Applications
Enter JPEG into the search box and change any that say "Save file" to "Always ask".
Does it work?

Tools > Options >General tab
pick "Always ask me where to save files"

Can't open pdf files that are forwarded from a iphone

Our clients are sending in emails which a few of our users are viewing them on their iPhone. When they forward the message to other users the pdf files won't open. It gives an error message, "There was an error opening this document. The file is damaged and could not be repaired". I've tried saving the pdf to the desktop then try to open it with no success and the same error message.I've also checked to make sure the Add-in is enabled.
We are on Acrobat X 32 bit Standard 10.1.10 and Windows 7 x64 Pro/Ult. Outlook is 32 bit version. Any ideas what the problem is?

Have you got adobe reader installed on your pc? you need it to open PDF files....heres a link to download it
