Can'tInstall tiger on G4 quick silver

When I put the Tiger full version in cs/dvd drive to install 10.4 over 10.3.9, the drive spits out the disc without out ever mounting it., When I try a work around, it says can't install on this Mac but I have enough memory, 533 speed on G4 quick Silver.
lcjones

I stand corrected- It is the Digital Audio version of G4.
Next item. The CD I was trying to use mounted on other macs and it is the full ball of wax, namely the srink wrapped box with a black disc and a solver X running across the entire face of the disc.
Next item. The work around I tried was to take a portion of the mounted OS Tiger image and try to install where the coumputer would not have to restart. If you look down in the parts of the install disc, there is a packet called Optional Installs.
The the dialog box comes up and says:
"Welcome to the Optional Installs Installer
Mail cannot be installed on this comp-uter.
This software cannot be installed on this computer."
So when I find a firewire cable, I am going to try to install it on an external drive but I don't think that will work either. Just have to check.
Thanks for all the replies- Keep them coming- Need to do my taxes and
Turbotax won't run on Panther.-May have to go to another location where my other Macs are to do the taxes.

  • Adding a 2nd Hard Drive to a 733 Mhz Quick Silver

    Hello Happy New Year!
I'm picking up a Quick Silver 733 Mhz for a 2nd Computer, and I'd like to add a 2nd internal hard drive.
I'd like to run this Quick Silver on 2 hard drives:
One with OS 9 - The other with Tiger 10.3
I wonder if there is an additional sled (port) for another internal hard drive? I believe so ....
If all goes well (if this is possible), I'll also add additional Ram.
    BUT
I've read here that actually some G4 Quick Silvers have an ATA controller that LIMITS the size of an internal Hard Drive. This being the case, does anyone know what the largest drive is that I can install? I read somewhere here that it's limited 120-150 Gig?
If all goes well, looks like I'd to put OS 9 on a 40 Gig internal HD, and Tiger on another 120-150 Gig internal HD.
    Sound like a plan?
    HAPPY NEW YEAR
    Mike

    Malcolm You're the MAN!
Yes I stand corrected - I meant to say Tiger 10.3
And I assumed that my Tiger Install Discs are the retail version: Although they were included with my G5 that I bought used, the Install Package of Tiger is the Big Black Box with the Black Colored Discs (not the Gray OEM discs that you sometimes see), know what I mean?
And yes I agree with you that I will pick up #2 NEW Hard Drives. Both 120 Gigs each.
I'll format one drive with OS 9 - I need this OS for an older an Tascam Automation Program. My OS 9 disc is also the retail version.
I'll format the other 120 Gig Hard Drive with Tiger.
I'd rather use 2 Separate HD's (would rather not partion one HD for 2 separate OS's)
Sound like a plan to you Malcolm? Am I missing anything?
    Thank You Malcolm
    My Best
    Mike

  • Adobe's new 64 bit multimedia operating system code named Quick Silver

As far as I know Adobe is not creating a 64 bit bit operating system but I wish they would. Or at the very least they should make a web browser called Quick Silver.  I am writng this because I seen the Mozilla Fire Fox video. I think Moziila will soon write a mobile OS and maybe even a desktop OS. They are even asking for donations. I like Fire Fox because it is free. If they charge for it I would probably just use IE. I know Adobe has the free Acrobat Reader and Flash Player why not a web borwser? I think if Adobe created an OS and gave it away free for 18-19 months it could get a large amount market share. Two years later they could start to charge $35 for the OS. I think within 3 years Adobe could get 50% of the market share for new computers if the OS was only about $35.00 for the download version ($45.00 retail version).  I don't doubt that Adobe could get a good 50% of the market share and other multimedia software and hardware vendors would also support the Adobe OS. Before I make the feature request I would like to know your thoughts.

Imagine if the car industry ran like software/hardware:
Dragging your car home with a rope (and no wheels because they were not included) to spend 8 hours removing unnecessary things like 'McAfee windshield wiper fluid made from glue', 'iMovie sticky gum' on the upholstery, and "VAIO media player lemon scent deeply rigged into the AC unit" which has pretty much nothing to do with the car... only to call the dealership and ask: "when I start my car and pres the window down button the right blinker turns on and then the vehicle stops" then be put on hold for 6 months to receive the following response "what was the number of times the blinker flashed before the car turned off? we need that number to determine what part to send"... and then when you finally DO get the wheels the dealership releases a new version of your car and the state puts a road law into effect that crashes your vehicle when it touches the road unless you pay the dealership to upgrade from car 1.5 to car 1.5.7390... which when you do the engine is not supported? So... you buy the NEW NEW car that comes with 1.6 installed in the engine and find out the wheels will not be released till next month.
    dig?
    ~lol.
i do try remain cheerful and hopeful... but its not funny anymore.
you make a good point, but... are there some sales statistics for that?
light trolling, but seriously, does final cut have a support problem, roll out fail, error code and forum track record anything at all like this?
    google ->site: forums.adobe.com = About 12,500,000 results
    google ->site:forums.adobe.com = About 3,880,000 results
I think the FCP thing is a great idea. Lets check back in a year and see who bought it...
I would totally would have preferred to pay $6500.00 for a "Dedicated Adobe Tower Master Collection Desktop" @ $65 per month (hardware included)
instead of the $20,000 shelled out over the last 10 years on soft (PLUS another 2 desktops and 3 laptops and the gadgets since 2002)
not to mention the time lost. the valuable time I will want back on my deathbed. lol
Even if Adobe does not do a proprietary OS, I am thinking it still makes sense for some 3rd party to bundle, its not the same though...
Apple is on to something in my opinion.
Imagine Apple and Microsoft teaming up with Adobe to produce very specific machines?
Other industries do this, they communicate, they have standards, look at how Vehicles and Tire manufacturers collaborate...
When a new car comes out they don't just change the wheel well and expect the Tire manufacturers to follow suit later, no indeed, that kind of thing is rolled out proper and one can drive right off the lot the day its bought.

  • Formatting a Drive in a Quick Silver G4 733

    Hello Hello
I just picked up a Quick Silver G4 733 from Ebay, and it was supposed to have had it's hard drive erased.
Well, when I tried to boot it up, it tried to boot into OS 9.2, but apparently gets stuck in the process. My guess is that the morons didn't do a proper erase of the hard drive, before they shipped it.
So I opened the case and got the CDROM Draw to open (manually)
I inserted my Apple Retail OS 9.1 disc into the drive and rebooted, while holding down the C key. This wasn't successful. The disc starts to spin but the system won't recogize the disc to boot up into. The disc is genuine - it's fine ...
The system just won't boot into it .....
Anybody have any suggestions? (Other than get a new Hard Drive)
    Thanx
    Mike

You cannot load OS9.1 on a Mac that only boots in OS9.2.2.
Buy OSX. Under OSX you should be able to install your OS9.1 then go to Apple.com and download the updates to 9.2.2.
After that you should be able to boot into OS9.
I don't know if this will work because I have never tried it.
Usually, when you try to boot from a older system you get a message that says" This system cannot be installed on this Mac"
ALSO...Make sure your RAM did not come loose in shipping. Check and make sure the RAM is securely pushed in.

I strongly recommend that you install iTunes to the default C: paths. You can change the perferences to keep the actual music files on your D: partition.

  • OK, Why can't Tiger talk to Leopard?

Well, since there are about a million threads titled "problem" I thought I'd be more specific. Here's the deal, I'm using a MacBook Pro, with OSX 10.4.11 & iChat 3.1.9. I use my iChat all the time to talk to my father across the country with narry a hitch. Now, suddenly I can't talk to him on his new MacBook running Leopard. I can still link up fine to his Tiger machine 3 feet away from the MacBook, however. Both machines are using his wireless network so the only difference is OSX 5.
To confirm this, I called up a buddy with a spanking new MacBook Pro & tried to contact him with the same results. Almost as soon as he accepts the chat request, I get one of those massive error messages. So the problem seems to be talking from Tiger to Leopard or back (he gets the same message when he tries to contact me).
Others on this board seem to be having the same problem, but so far I haven't seen a solution that works.
So what's the deal? Why can't my never-failed-before machine talk to brand-spanking-new ones?
Why can't Tiger talk to Leopard?

How has he set the ports to be open for iChat 3 and 4 in his modem or router or for two computers ?

  • Why can't I open a Quick time video (QTCON) on my Macbook 10.6.8?

Why can't I open a Quick time video (QTCON) on my Macbook 10.6.8? This should be straight forward right? But its not.

Quicktime X is a great little piece of software. However, Quicktime X is very finicky on which codec/file format it can decode/play.
Luckily, there are DOZENS of alternative video/media players and extensions available for the Mac. Some of them are even FREE. Some of the better FREE ones include...
    PERIAN (quicktime extension)
    http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/22923/perian
    QUICKTIME 7.6.6
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL923
    VLC Media Player
    http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/5758/vlc-media-player
    NICEPLAYER
    http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/15136/niceplayer
... And if none of those work, there is a possibility that, that video file may be corrupted.

  • Can OSX tiger or earlier be installed into a 8600/300 PowerMac?

    Hi all,
Can OSX tiger or earlier be installed into a PowerMac 8600/300? I have OS 9.1 currently. If so, will it be easy to install? Thanks for your help.

OS X can only be installed on machines using G3 or later processors. Tiger requires a minimum of 256 MBs of RAM. Earlier versions of OS X required 128 MBs of RAM. These are minimum requirements. OS X requires a hard drive with a minimum of 6 GBs for installation but practically you need at least a 10 GB or larger hard drive. The hard drive must be formatted HFS+ (Mac OS Extended.)
It is possible to install OS X (probably not Tiger) using a freeware utility called XPostFacto (VersionTracker or MacUpdate). However, the computer must still have the minimum RAM and hard drive space.
Because of the heavy graphic overhead demanded by OS X I don't believe you will be pleased with the performance on such an old machine.

  • Can't get Collada (.dae) Quick Look to work...

Can't get Collada (.dae) Quick Look to work...
It should work in SL, right?
And Quick Look knows says it is "Digital Asset Exchange"...

It depends on the DAE file. Just because the DAE file adheres to all the standards, it doesn't mean the Apple knows how to draw it. Conversely, Apple can render some DAE files that do not completely adhere to the standard.
We actually used Quick Look/Preview to test our iPhone app NaviCAD (http://www.navicad.com) as a comparison when rendering KMZ files from the Google 3D Warehouse (http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse), so I can confidently say that Apple knows how to render most of these files (you have to rename the KMZ file to a ZIP file and extract the DAE file and its textures).
And, as expected, Apple can render the canonical duck file, and some of other files from the COLLADA model bank (http://www.collada.org/owl/).

  • Quick Silver [866mhz] Mac won't join network [Airport Extreme]: "error"

My roommate is using an older 'quick silver' mac [OS 10.4.11] and is trying to get onto my network which is run through my airport extreme base station. When the password is entered, I get the following message: "an error occurred while joining the network".
Other information: the security chosen for my own Mac Pro is, 'WPA2/personal'. The quick silver doesn't seem to have that as a choice; just plain 'WPA'. Not sure if that's relevant.
Does anyone have any clues as to how to get that Mac to join the network?

Is the Extreme set up as "N" only? Also, Sometimes I've had "dumbdown" the security settings to wpa rather than wpa2 for various devices to work- but I will say MY quicksilver with airport card works
with a 2 year old Airport extreme.
(often i'll just turn the security off and hide the network name) if various older computers with wireless adapters are having trouble.
