Can two thunderbolt displays act as one larger display

I have two thunderbolt displays and would like to not be limited by the physical width of both.  for example, i cant extend a window from one display to another like dragging a multi column spreadsheet across both to work on one large spreadsheet.  can anyone provide insight?

In "Mission Control" system preference, uncheck "Displays have separate Spaces", logout, then login.
In the "Arrangement" tab of "Displays" system preference, drag the displays to match their actual positions.

  • Can I daisy chain two Thunderbolt displays to the new MacBook Airs (July 2011)?

I have last year's MacBook Air -- probably the best Mac I've ever had and I've had a few. I looked at using multiple displays last year, but the reviews for the major 3rd-party solutions really demonstrate how little is possible.
I see Apple says you can double up on displays for the MacBook Pro (I have a pre-Thunderbolt one unfortunately), what about the new (July 2011) MacBook Airs?
    Anyone tried? Anyone know?
(I have a 30" Dell display, but it is, and always has been, very flakey when it comes to connecting to a Mac laptop).

You can thank Intel for that.
The sandy bridge chips all have integrated graphics, and before they were released -- they took nvidia to court claiming they didn't have a "license" to make GPU chipsets for the sandy bridge line.  Intel won, and consumers lost.
The solution most manufacturers are using for notebooks is graphics switching (nvidia optimus like technology) -- which basically uses a discreet GPU along side the intel integrated GPU, and switches between the two instantaenously based on the workload and \ or battery life -- this is how the macbook pro's with the ATI gpus work.
Since there isn't enough space physically inside a macbook air for a discreet GPU, and since no company in the world is allowed to make a shared GPU for intel's sandy bridge chipsets -- the only solution is to use the integrated graphics that is in the processors -- Intel HD 3000.  Intel basically has the monopoly here...there is no legal solution in the world another company can provide thanks to our wonderful court system
Wanna know the really sad part about the Intel HD 3000 GPU?  The Nvidia 320M (the GPU used in the previous model 2010 macbook air -- chip was released to the market in April of last year) actually out performs it in some benchmarks -- that's right, a 1+ year old shared gpu from nvidia outperforms Intel's 2011 integrated graphics.
    Intel ***** at graphics, period.
The only other solution I can think of is for you to get the "Echo Express" product from Sonnet:
    http://www.sonnettech.com/product/thunderbolt/index.html
It's basically an external bay that will allow you to put a PCIe GPU inside it, and it would then connect via thunderbolt to the macbook air.
You would then use the minidisplayport connectors on the PCIe GPU to connect to the apple displays -- I believe any modern ATI or Nvidia GPU can support up to 3 or 4 external displays.
Unfortunately, sonnet's bay is not released yet, and you'd also have to make sure the PCIe GPU you get supports both thunderbolt AND os x....so yeah, kind of slim pickens right now
    EDIT:
So apparently the macbook pros can daisy chain two thunderbolt displays -- Apple has a picture of it on their site:
    http://storeimages.apple.com/1867/as-images.apple.com/is/image/AppleInc/MC914_AV 7?wid=1200&hei=1200&fmt=jpeg&qlt=95&op_sharpen=0&resMode=bicub&op_usm=0.5,0.5,0, 0&iccEmbed=0&layer=comp
I just bought a new mac air too...I was gonna get a mbpro but they are just too expensive -- the one I configured was at around 3000$
Wanna know what's lame about using the thunderbolt display with the mac air?  So the new mac air has the magsafe connector on one side and the thunderbolt connector on the other -- they're not on the same side like the macbook pro is (see picture) -- so basically the cable is going to have to slack around the back of the macbook air -- who designed that?  Must have been smoking some good meth ;p

  • If I daisy chain two Thunderbolt Displays to a 2011 iMac 27" can I connect a Wacom Cintiq HD to the other Thunderbolt port?

In one Thunderbolt port are the two Thunderbolt displays, in another Thunderbolt port is the Cintiq HD. Would this work on an iMac 27".

Looks like 2 external displays are the max, even for the 2-port (TB) iMac.  So if the Cintiq shows up in ASP and is considered by the computer as a display, then NO, you won't be able to use the Wacom Cintiq in 'addition' to (2) TB displays.

  • Can I run two thunderbolt display monitors off of my new 27" iMac?

Can I run two thunderbolt display monitors off of my new 27" iMac?

Yes, the new iMac has two Thunderbolt ports. Plus Thunderbolt can be daisy chained thru external Thunderbolt drives and displays that have multiple ports.
    For more info, see >  Apple - Thunderbolt: Next-generation high-speed I/O technology.
Although I'm not sure exactlly what Arrangement selections you will be offered in the Displays Preference, because I have not tested that setup myself...

  • Two thunderbolt displays.....can I use both of them for audio

I have two thunderbolt displays and want to run audio through both of their built in speakers?  Is this possible

Yup yup -- but there's issues..

Let me know if you have found other better options!

  • Problem with two thunderbolt display's daisychained

    hey,
i'm having problems with my mac setup. i've got two thunderbolt displays, hooked to a 15" mbp retina laptop.
i've got my iphone hooked to one of the usb ports of the display then i've got a keyboard, a superdrive and a charger for my magic mouse hooked to the displays as well as a firewire hd. two usb 3 hard drives are hooked directly to the mbp.
i also changed the audio midi setup to let the audio pla through both of the displays to get a better sound. the mbp is closed so only those two displays get a video signal.
i have issues when data is transfered along the lines. f.eg my keyboard doesn't work from time to time, my iphone wont be recognized when connected to the dock. not really sure what the problems is a the transfercapacity shouldn't be to it's limit.
could it be a energy problem? that the displays don't get enough power, my power strip has a voltag controller in it, might that be a problem?
    greets.

I think Apple should extend the warranty if they have a known manufacturing issue.  I won't be investing another $1000 on a display from Apple ever again.  I can't afford it.  I can by an LG, Viewsonic, Dell, or "fill in the blank" for a fraction of the cost.
I expect a $1000 display to last me more than 20 months.

  • How much of the thunderbolt datapipe does two thunderbolt displays use?

I have a Late 2011 MBP Pro with Two Thunderbolt displays.
I want to add a thunderbolt external drive and use it to store paralles images for occassional use.
My question is, how much of my thunderport "pipe" is already being consumed by the displays?  I found a video with what appears to be a speedometer type tool, but can't find it for the life of me.
    Thanks!

No idea what that 'speedometer' test is - I use the AJA System Test to test my Thunderbolt drives speeds. My config is two LaCie TB 2big drive (one 4 terabyte 'unRAIDed' into 2 2 terabyte drive and one 2 terabyte RAID 0) connected to my 15" late 2011 MBP and then with the Display on the end of the chain (as it should be).
As I understand it, the more Thunderbolt drives you have, the faster your overall speed (don't ask me why - it's PR put out by LaCie). I don't think that you'd take any kind of hit putting a Thunderbolt drive or drives between your MBP and your two Thunderbolt Displays.
    That's just my understanding...

  • HT6093 Updating two Thunderbolt display firmwares

I have two Thunderbolt displays, one at work and one at home. I updated the firmware of the work one, and want to update the firmware of the home one.
With the Macbook Air clamshell open and the display plugged in, the App Store at home says that the update has already been applied.
    Suggestions?

Yes, the firmware is the old firmware, because the update never ran on the home display.

  • Can a Thunderbolt display be used with an iPad?

Can a Thunderbolt display be used with just an iPad?
    Hal

Not that I know of since the iPad does not have a Thunderbolt port and I know of no adapters to go from the iPad digital adapter or component cables to the new display.

  • I have two Thunderbolt Displays connected to my MacBook Pro, can I also use the built in MacScreen as a 3rd screen?

    Thunderbolt Displays are daisy chained

It depends on what MacBook Pro and video card you have. What I have seen is this:
MacBook Pro with Retina display can drive four screens simultaneously
New MacBooks can manage many, many monitors

  • Best way to set up two thunderbolt displays and thunderbolt ethernet on a Late 2013 MBP with only 2 thunderbolt ports?

I have a late 2013 MBP with only 2 thunderbolt ports. I want to set up two external displays (both have usb ports on the back but not thunderbolt so I can't daisy-chain) but one of my thunderbolt ports is being taken up by the ethernet adapter. Is it possible to convert one of my displays to plug into my open HDMI slot? Or is it better to use the two thunderbolt ports for the two displays and switch the ethernet to the slower usb adapter?

You can use a HDMI to DVI adapter if the display resolution is not greater than 1920 x 1200.
    <http://startech.com/Cables/Audio-Video/HDMI/>
or you could use wireless for your network connection.
    <http://www.apple.com/airport-express/>
If you use 5GHz, it should be nearly as fast as Ethernet.

  • Is there a workaround to using two thunderbolt displays on iMac running bootcamp?

is there a way to get two thunderbolt monitors to work using bootcamp on an iMac? If not, why is it not possible?

Not directly, I recommend contacting Elgato.com and see which of their products suits your needs. Apple doesn't put TV tuners in their computers, that is why you need an Elgato device.

  • Can the thunderbolt display connect to my 13" 2010 MBP?

    My specs (13" 2010) -
2.8Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo (Overclocked)
    8GB RAM 1666Mhz
    NVIDIA GeForce 320M 256MB
As it is the 2010 version, it doesn't have thunderbolt. But will the new Thunderbolt display function on my MBP? Thanks.

    No.
    Confusing Mini DisplayPort with Thunderbolt
Apple still sells the mini-displayport version of the 27" display.

  • Can two ERP systems  talk to one SCM?

    Hello Experts,
We have a requirement to connect Two ERP systems to one SCM system?
Is this option available is available in SCM? CIF processing and optimizer should divide for the two ERP systems in SCM.
    Please advice .
    Thanks
    Ramesh

    Hi Ramesh,
Yes;  it is possible to integrate multiple R/3 systems with single APO. You need to define multiple business system groups in APO  and assign to different R/3 logical systems to be integrated(transaction /SAPAPO/C1 and /SAPAPO/C2). Also you can use CIF enhancements APOCF001 on APO inbound  to attach (suffix) a unique R/3 identifier along with product and location codes. For this, you have to maintain a Z table containing the required suffixes. You may further refer to application help in the enhancement transaction.

  • Can Two Projects Be Combined Into One?

After two days this is what I have. A slide show of a wedding with about 80 slides, one project. And a second project, a video of the wedding, that I have edited to 7 minutes. I would like the wedding movie to appear in the middle of the slide show. But I can not figure it out. I have made a third project with the slides and I am looking to how to insert the video. I can not see a means to do that. Can I do what I want? What should I do?  Thanks in advance.

Oh my gosh. The video training program prepared by Steve has the answers to most of the questions on this board. All of mine certainly. Super job. I have been working in training departments for over 20 years and this by far the very best online training program I have seen. Congratulations. The slide show I made of my son's wedding brings tears to all who see it and now that I can show the wedding clip in the slide show for all that were not on the cruise will just ice the cake....Thank you and Hunt. Amazing.
