Can two users really share a photo library?

The Apple website suggests that with Aperture and iPhoto two users can share a photo library on one mac. Here is the exact text at http://www.apple.com/uk/aperture/iphoto-to-aperture/ :
iPhoto. Aperture. And the all-in-one library.
Now iPhoto and Aperture share the same photo library. With all your photos in one place, they’re easy to view, edit and manage. And you can switch between iPhoto and Aperture easily. When you need to retouch details using precision brushes or selectively tweak specific colours in a photo, open Aperture. If you want to make calendars and cards with your photos, go back to iPhoto. The unified library is great when there are two people who use the same Mac for both iPhoto and Aperture. All your photos stay together. And you get the best ofboth applications.*
It this really true? Other discussions and support articles suggest that I can't share a photo library between users. Or at least not without jumping through hoops like using an external drive or creating a separate and specially configured partition.

. A genius at my local Apple store told me I could merge our separate iPhoto libraries, then move the combined library to the shared folder on the hard drive.
That used to be possible with older iPhoto versions, but a shared folder does no longer work.  Read Apple's Support  article I linked to:
iPhoto: Sharing libraries among multiple users
Important: If two or more users attempt to use the same iPhoto library and the library is not on a volume where permissions are ignored, unexpected results may occur. This includes the inability to see or edit certain photos, or the inability to open the iPhoto library.
You need to move the library to a separate partion or an external drive, where you can set the "Ignore ownership" flag.

  • Can two apple IDs share the same library?

Mac newbie here needs some advice...
I just got a new iMac and have created separate accounts for my husband and me on it.  We used to share an apple ID for music, but now I'd like for us to have our own apple IDs especially with the iCloud capabilities I don't want my iPhone stuff going to his Mac account, etc.  Problem is that all his music is in my library and he doesn't want to have to re-buy it again.  So I figured out that I can share my music library with his account on the iMac, and I have him signed in to iTunes with his separate Apple ID... good so far... but what's going to happen when he buys something?  Will it go into my library (as some sort of combined one), or into a separate one?
The other issue I encountered is that when I went to enable automatic synchronization across devices for him, I got a message saying that it was already logged in with another apple ID (I'm assuming it was referring to mine?).  That's not good.
I want us both to have totally separate IDs etc, especially for iCloud backups etc, but I wanted to be able to share music libraries.  Is that possible?  Am I doing something wrong?
    Thanks!

If you want to share a single AppleID with a single iTunes Library, then simply sync both devices to that iTunes library using the same user account.
If you want to sync two AppleIDs to one iTunes library, in iTunes on the computer, login and authorize each AppleID, then sync the devices to that common iTunes library in the same user account.
You do not do anything on the device being sync'd itself - it all has to do with how iTunes that you are syncing to is set up and what AppleIDs are authorized there.  You can sync multiple devices to iTunes, just be sure that each device gets a unique device name in the iTunes sidebar.
To then use unique AppleIDs for iCloud and iMessage on a iOS device, first, make an iCloud account with the AppleID you want to use (go to http://www.iCloud.com), then set up that iCloud account on the device with that ID and password.  In iMessage, just log out with whatever AppleID you are using now, log in with the new AppleID and it will reauthorize, now linking that device with the new iMessage account just created with that AppleID (your iMessage primary account ID is always the AppleID used to initially create and verify the iMessage account).

  • Can two User Accounts share a playlist?

My wife and I have a shared iTunes Music folder (Macintosh HD/Users/Shared/iTunes Music) which serves both user accounts and both iPods.
However, we have not figured out how to copy playlists. I don't want all of hers, and she doesn't want all of mine. It would be useful, however, to be able to copy individual playlists from her iTunes Music Library to mine, and vice-versa, so that playlists we both like don't have to be re-created.
Is there a way to do this?

  • How can I set up my Mac for two users to share photos, music etc

How can I set up my Mac for two users to share photos, music etc?

On the Mac with the libraries you want to share:
iTunes Preferences click on the Sharing tab and put a tick in 'Share by library on local network'.
iPhoto Preferences click on Sharing and put a tick against 'Share my photos'.
When launching the same apps on other Macs on the network the libraries should be available, listed on the left.

  • Can two iTunes accounts share the same appleTV simultaneously ?

can two iTunes accounts share the same appleTV simultaneously ?

    This should help:
iTunes: How to share music between different accounts on a single computer
Note that when it says "publicly accessible location", it needs to be a place where everyone has read and write access. The most common such place is the Shared folder in the Users folder, but you can place the music elsewhere if you change the access permissions manually (don't start tinkering with permissions unless you're confident you know what you're doing and can reverse things if they get messed up).

You will need an external drive that is formatted as MAC OS EXTENDED (journaled).
Move the Project, Events, and any photos and music to the external drive by following the instructions in this post.
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4141
Be sure to use CONSOLIDATE MEDIA to get the photos and music. Then plug this drive into your computer and you will be able to edit.

  • How can I possible lose my entire photo library/ referenced master image file if I have downloaded all my images directly onto Aperture?

How can I possible lose my entire photo library/ referenced master image file if I have downloaded all my images directly onto Aperture?

CeliaJane, you need to distinguish between the Aperture Library and the Aperture Application.
Aperture stores your images in a database, and it is this database that we have to find and probably to repair, not the application (hopefully). And since you do not see any images, I suspect that Aperture created a new, empty Aperture Library, and you are now viewing this empty library. Usully the library sits in your Pictures fiolder.
Look into your Pictures folder, if you see a file with a colorful icon with three pictures, called something.aplibrary, as shown above. And also enter ".applibrary" into the "Spotlight" searchfield in the upper right corner of your screen. If you have more than one Library, you should be able to find them this way.
The largest file you find will probably be the correct library.
When you have found the correct file called aperturexxxx.aplibrary, try to open it in "First Aid" mode.
Select the Library and press down "command" and "option" key at the same time, while you double click the library.
Now the First Aid dialogue should appear:
Select: Repair Permissions" and see if you can open the Library again. If it did not help, try the other two options in turn.

  • Can two users work on different files of the same project?

Sorry if this has been asked already...but can two users work
on different files of the same project? How would that work? Would
    it work something like this?
    1. From RoboHelp 7, user A checks out the entire project.
    2. User A checks in the files they are not working with.
    3. User B checks out the project but can only 'edit' the
files that have been checked in by user A.
Is this how the source control works?

That's the basic idea. User A doesn't actually have to check
out the whole project, though. RSC will selectively check out only
the files that are actually getting changed. Both writers will have
a complete copy of the project on their local machines, but the
files are read-only until they are literally checked out, which is
on an as-needed basis unless the writer explicitly checks them out.

  • Can two users on the same Mac sync contacts by using the same Apple ID in the iCloud settings?

Can two users on the same Mac sync contacts by using the same Apple ID in the iCloud settings?

    Hi Barney,
That's exactly what I want. I have a personal user and a business user on my MacBook Pro. I want both users to have the same contacts so if I add a contact while I'm logged into my personal user, it will show up when I'm logged into my business user. I want both contacts books to be exactly the same; like you said. So, I used my business user AppleID when I enabled iCloud for my personal user and I enabled iCloud for my business user with that Apple ID as well. For my personal user, I selected Contacts and Calendars to sync with iCloud. For my business user, I selected everything to sync with iCloud. The problem is... it didn't change anything. I restarted my computer to see if that would do anything but nothing happened. I'm not super savvy with Apple products, so maybe I'm completely confused.
    Hi Xeni,
Thank you for your response, as well.

  • HT204022 How can I delete pictures from MY PHOTO LIBRARY? I use Firefix in my PC.

How can I delee pictures from the Photo Library on my IPod Touch?. I use Firefox as my browser. I want to take them from the IPod to my Pc. I need to free up space.

You can turn off photo stream on the iPad via Settings > iCloud > Photo Stream . Individual photos can't be deleted according to http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4486 :
Individual photos cannot be deleted from your Photo Stream. You can, however, delete all the photos in your Photo Stream by clicking the Reset Photo Stream button in your account at icloud.com. The Reset Photo Stream button will instantly delete all Photo Stream photos stored in iCloud, but it will not remove any Photo Stream photos that have already been pushed to your devices.

  • How can two users share the same iTunes library in 10.7

I am running Lion 10.7 and there are two users on the iMac.
I would like full read/write access to our share music from either user account.
Currently I have the iTunes Media folder in users/shared and on my account it looks like a regular iTunes and in my preferences I have ticked the 'share' box, but on my wifes account she can see the shared library but the only view available is a simple list.

Try putting it on a removable drive, like a flash drive.

  • Share iCloud Photo Library between two iCloud Accounts

I'm hoping someone can think of a creative solution to a problem I've encountered after upgrading to the latest OS on our Apple devices. Here is our specific use case:
Prior to iOS 8/OS X Yosemite, this was my configuration
Each Device (iPhone, iPod, iPad, Mac) was configured as such:
Primary iCloud Account: shared family account - [email protected] iPhone, calendar, reminders, Photostream enabled
Secondary iCloud Account: individual unique account - [email protected], calendar, reminders, mail enabled
This allows each user to have their own content under their unique iCloud account that was a secondary account on each device, but still have access to all of the shared services setup under the common Primary iCloud account on each device.
Most importantly, Photostream allowed EVERY photo on EVERY device to be automatically shared with every other device.
    Post iOS 8/OS X Yosemite:
Apple has provided support for most of what was accomplished with the common shared iCloud account via Family Sharing, and iCloud Photo Gallery is a fantastic service.
BUT, due to Continuity and Hand-Off relying on the primary iCloud account, there is no way to share one iCloud Photo Gallery account across multiple users. The only way I've found to do that is to maintain a common primary iCloud account on each device that handles the iCloud Photo Gallery syncing, but then every device will respond to Hand-off and Continuity actions, which is obviously not ideal.
To recap, I want individual iCloud accounts on every device per user so that Handoff and Continuity work correctly, BUT I want one common iCloud Photo Gallery across all accounts so that every picture is shared with every device without having to manually add them to a shared album.
Am I missing something with the configuration, or is there a way to "trick" iCloud to work the way I want?

For iPhoto 09 (version 8.0.2) and later:
    What you mean by 'share'.
If you want the other user to be able to see the pics, but not add to, change or alter your library, then enable Sharing in your iPhoto (Preferences -> Sharing), leave iPhoto running and use Fast User Switching to open the other account. In that account, enable 'Look For Shared Libraries'. Your Library will appear in the other source pane.
Any user can drag a pic from the Shared Library to their own in the iPhoto Window.
Remember iPhoto must be running in both accounts for this to work.
If you want the other user to have the same access to the library as you: to be able to add, edit, organise, keyword etc.
Quit iPhoto in both accounts. Move the Library to the Users / Shared Folder
(You can also use an external HD set to ignore permissions, a Disk Image or even partition your Hard Disk.)
In each account in turn: Double click on the Library to open it. (You may be asked to repair the Library Permissions.) From that point on, this will be the default library location. Both accounts will have full access to the library, in fact, both accounts will 'own' it.
However, there is a catch with this system and it is a significant one. iPhoto is not a multi-user app., it does not have the code to negotiate two users simultaneously writing to the database, and trying will cause db corruption. So only one user at a time, and back up, back up back up.
