Can u have internal AND external speakers on???

Can both the internal speakers and some of my external speakers be on at the same time??

Allan,
No, unfortunately you cannot. Having external speakers plugged into the optical/analog output port automatically mutes the internal speakers.

  • I have lost all audio on both my internal and external speakers.

I have lost audio on both my internal and external speakers.  I have checked the System Preferences when my external speakers are plugged in it is acknowledged.  When using internal speakers they are also acknowledged.  Sound volume on Preferences is on and fully high.  The sound buttons on the keyboard  do not work and the sound level is now locked in at full sound and cannot be adjusted using the keys.  The System Preferences shows that Mute is now checked and I cannot uncheck it.  What should I do to get my sound back both internally and externally?

    Repair permissions & restart.
Check your settings in the Audio Midi app which is located in the Utilities folder.

    Repairing the mysteriously muted Mac
The background on the issue is that there’s a small sensor switch inside the headphone port. When you insert a headphone jack, the sensor understands what's what and changes the sound output setting to Headphones. If you insert a jack for digital audio output, the device changes to Digital Out. When you remove the jack completely, it should read Internal Speakers.
The spirits tell me that there’s a very good chance that you recently had something jacked into this port—a set of headphones or a cable leading to powered speakers, for example. When you removed the jack, something in the port prevented the sensor from tripping correctly. That’s why you see Digital Out instead of internal Speakers.
The solution is to force the sensor to do its job. The safest way to do that is to simply run a jack in and out of the port a few times. Much of the time, this takes care of the problem by correctly tripping the sensor. If that doesn’t work, there may be gunk in the port. Before turning to more invasive techniques, get a can of compressed air, attach the small tube that fits the nozzle, and blast a few shots of air into the port. With any luck, that should dislodge the gunk and the port will operate as it should.
If that doesn’t work, find a foam-tipped swab that fits (electronics shops generally carry them), dip it in rubbing alcohol, and gently insert it into the headphone port in an attempt to wipe away any stubborn gunk. I recommend foam rather than cotton swabs because the cotton variety might leave threads behind. (This same technique works well with misbehaving headphone ports on devices such as iOS devices.)
It's possible that gunk has nothing to do with it. Rather, it may be that the switch just needs a subtle nudge. If a jack or swab doesn't work, I've heard of people successfully resetting it with a deft poke of a toothpick.

  • I can't hear iTunes music or internet radio but internal and external speakers are definitely working. Is there a key stroke I have set or some other, maybe Yosemite, issue?

I have checked my internal speakers on an iMac and also the external speakers - all working. When play music in iTunes the sound bar moves but no sound is heard.  Same problem if I want to listen to the radio via internet.  Has anyone a suggestion.  Is it a Yosemite issue - I have had others involving printers. thanks

like davis says then even though I have connected headset and external speakers to my imac then at boot up the boot sound comes out of the imac speaker
but once booted into OS X all audio is played out of the headset and ext speakers and the imac speakers are silent as the grave

  • How to get internal and external speakers playing together?

Hey everyone, I just bought the HP ENVY dv7 with beats audio and I love it!  I only have one question that I couldn't seem to get answered anywhere else so I turned to here. Is there a way I can have the compuer's internal speakers (beats audio) and my home stereo speakers (external) playing at the same time? I love how good the beats sound but I also want the surround sound given by the external speakers. So is there a setting I can switch it to so it'll play both? I've tried looking but couldn't find it. Or is there some program/driver like thing I need to download off the interwebs so it'll play both? Thanks in advanced.

    Hello Branman,
I understand you want to play your surround sound system while also being able to hear your internal laptop speakers, is that correct? I will be happy to help you.
Unfortunately that will not work, by design whenever you plug in a surround sound system or just a standard set of headphones the system automatically disables the internal speakers. I was not able to come across any legit online software that you can download to make that a possible transition.
    Thanks

  • MacBook Pro internal and external speakers not responding

For the last 3-4 weeks, I've had odd bouts of incidents where the speakers (internal) stop responding at all.  I have a set of external speakers that are normally plugged into the computer, but they have also stopped producing sound.  Is there any way to troubleshoot this to determine the source of the problem.  (PS:  NOTHING works.  Even Skype contacts, iTunes playback, notification sounds -- everything is out.)

Bad really, coz if you could see a red light it would be much easier to solve.  The red light would indicate it was operating as a toslink (digital audio) connector and the switch that changes it from analog to digital audio was stuck.  It can be unstuck by wiggling a toothpick or cocktail stick in the socket.  It means it's much harder to diagnose what your problem is.
Suggest as a first stage that you attempt a PRAM reset followed by a SMC reset if still not working, then report back here.

  • Internal and external speakers

so i bought some a set of 2 logitch speakers and a sub... the only spot to really plug it into is the headphone jack... i was wondering if it was possible to set up my sound to come out of the head phone jack and the built in internal speakers
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
No. You can have either external or internal, but not both. The iMac G5 has built-in SPDIF port which supports 5.1 speaker systems such as the Logitech Z-680 if you want more than stereo sound. Here is the cable you'd hook up your iMac too those speakers to do that:
    http://www.monstercables.com/productPage.asp?pin=2809
Not all applications support more than 2 channel sound, but those that do will be able to take advantage of it.
P.S. I might add, this is the iMac Intel Duo forum, not the iMac G5 forum. If you have an iMac G5 as your profile says, you may find people will be able to give you more accurate answers about your machine, by posting here:

If you have an iMac Intel Duo, you are in the right place. To tell the two machines apart, see this article:

  • Can I have wireless AND wired speakers at same time?

Currently I have my iTV connected to my flat screen which plays sound through a wired receiver connected to my stereo speakers. So right now when I watch movies or play music through my iTV (or even regular TV), it comes through the TV speakers and my stereo. This setup is in my den/tv room.
However, I want to add an ADDITIONAL wireless speaker(s) in my living room (a separate room where everyone hangs out when not watching tv). I saw some wireless speakers in Costco this weekend, but Im skeptical that i can get them to work so the wireless speakers are working AND my current wired configuration is working.
Before I go making a purchase - has anyone else done this - is it possible? Im concerned the iTV will have me select an either/or situation with the speakers - not multiple wired and wireless options.

    Creative Cloud Help /
Install both CC and CS6 apps
Can I install both CC and CS6 apps with my Creative Cloud membership?
Yes, you can download most CS6 apps from the Download Center on creative.adobe.com. Click any app icon. From the product download page, for example Illustrator, look for the heading "In this version" and click the version pop-up menu beneath it to select CC or CS6. The large blue Download button at the top of the page changes to "Download CS6".
    Note:
It is fine to have both CS6 apps and CC apps on your computer. Some users require multiple versions for different clients, etc. It's a personal preference, but in no way is a requirement to uninstall your CS6 apps in order to install CC apps.

  • PM - Comparisson of internal and external activities - performance

    Dear All:
Our custumer wants to compare the performance of internal team's activities with those done by external teams.
External are normally used with service, (DIEN) material. But I can't use DIEN materials for internal activities, those are controlled normally with work centers.
Does somebody knows how can we solve the customer's problem ??
    Thanks in advance
    Luis Henrique

    Hello thyagarajan
tks for the reply. We got the point now... I gave this solution to the customer, bur the problem is that they use DIEN materials for external services and work centers for internal and they want to compare both. I told that the possibilities were:
    1) Use internal and external work centers, as you said
    2) Use service packs, changing the control key for those external so we can use both internal and external services. For this they shoul to confirm acitivities sheets
    3) Perhaps use a contract with the company as a supplier (I don't know how to deal with the costs) and use internal as "external" services. But they reply saying that even with one contract with 0,01 cost, they whould have taxes at the end of month.
They want to use DIEN material for both cases. Is that possible ? In my understanding, it's impossible.
    Thanks once more
    Luis Henrique

Leopard.  Did a full restore from Time Machine.  Now I can't access my other internal and external drives.  I get the following error: The folder “Capture Video” can’t be opened because you don’t have permission to see its contents.  I have repaired permissions pn the main harddrive.  When I try too click on a disk I get the previously stated error.  I can't even open up information to see what permission/access there is.  It simply will not let me see the content.  It shows the content of my main hard drive when I have clicked the other harddrive's name.

    Solved:
sudo chflags 0 /Volumes/"FCP Time Machine BU"
sudo chown 0:80 /Volumes/"FCP Time Machine BU"
sudo chmod 775 /Volumes/"FCP Time Machine BU"
sudo chmod -N /Volumes/"FCP Time Machine BU"

All my hard drives (internal and external) have a small lock in the lower left corner of the icon and I don't have permissions to access. I have 3 user accounts set up and I cannot access any of them.   Permissions are set to 'Custom' in the get info window and I can't change them. Originally I had Snow Leopard installed on one hard drive and 10.5.8 installed on another.   I started to have some problems accessing data between them and so I tried changing the permissions on ONE hard drive partition.   The next thing I know, all my drives are locked (except the ones with the systems on them), the small lock appeared in the lower left corner of the drive icons and I don't have permissions to access any of them.   In the get info window, permissions are set to 'Custom' and I can't change them.

There is suddenly a lock icon on my external backup drive!

  • Can I split my itunes music library between and internal and external hard drive?

Is it possible to have music on the two different drives and still be able to make playlists from both drives to put on my ipod?  Here's my situation:  I'm using a Dell 32 bit computer running Vista Home Premium SP2 which I share with other users.  I have a large itunes library (40g+ of music only) that's starting to hog the hard disk space from other users. If possible, I would like to split off part of my itunes library to an external hard drive while still having access to the entire library for my ipod. Ideally I would like to have all my downloaded songs on both the internal and external drives so I'll have backups in case a drive fails, while putting all the music I have hard copies of solely on the external drive. Any help on how this can be done would be appreciated.

If you manually manage your itues library, you can store parts of it on an external drive, or on an internal drive.  Just keep in mind that in iTunes that you must set a default location for iTunes to manage it's files, and that will be the default location for iTunes to store anything it downloads.  You would need to manuay manage moving things from there if tht is not where you want them stored.
Perhaps a "better" solution would be for you to invest a little mone into 2 external drives.  One to hold your entire iTunes library, and the second to be your off-line backup of the first.  This is the method I have gone with and I like how it works for me.  My entire iTunes library is on an external (portable) 320GB drive.  Then, when iTunes is not running, I will clone my external drive onto a second drive I happen to have, this way if I have any failure of my primary drive, I lose at most about a weeks worth of content.  For me, I purchase little content during a week, but I do move a fairly large volume of podcasts.  With the entire library being on the external drive, if I ever have to swap to using my backup drive iTunes wil just think that it hasn't run and downloaded anything for a week, and all the "lost" content will be re-downloaded automatically.  This won't work for apps or purchased content, but for subscribed podcasts, it is great.

  • My iPod Touch will not play through external speakers when it is docked.  It only plays through it's internal speaker.  All the other functions on the iPod can be controlled by the external speakers (volume, track, etc).  How do I fix this?

My iPod Touch will not play through external speakers when it is docked.  It only plays through it's internal speaker.  All the other functions on the iPod can be controlled by the external speakers (volume, track, etc).  How do I fix this?

    I would try in oreder:
    - Resetting the iPod:
Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home
button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restoring the iPod via iTunes.  First from backup and if problem persists, restore to factory defaults/new iPod.

  • Can I use my monitor and external speakers with apple tv

I have an extra computer monitor (DVI input) and external speakers (3.5mm male audio jack.) Is there  some combination of adapters that I can use to hook up an apple tv to them in order to stream from netflix, and my itunes library?

no but you can get tons of solutions where you connect something to your tv's minijack headset connector and then it wireless transfer the audio signal to a headset
there are both bluetooth solutions belkin have one I use and there are also solutions where the headset is included and they use their own custom protocol
but mind you there is no way to keep such setups in sync in terms of video and audio so if the system is poor in quality or pre-process the audio signal too much it cause audio and visuals to get out of sync

  • Enabling internal when external speakers plugged in

is there a way to enable the internal speakers when i have external speakers plugged in on my 24" iMac??
i want this cause i use a Bose Cinemate® speaker system and it powers off after inactivity/no sound ... so then I don't hear alarms etc ...
btw i've asked Bose and they say there's no way to disable their power off timeout ;-()
    TIA

    Hello mate
I have a similar headache wanting to connect bluetooth speakers as well as plugged in speakers to play itunes in 2 rooms at the same time...nigh on impossible and is still a nightmare- however a solution that may work for you is this..http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/18611 - its a piece of audio software called audio highjacker that allows you to play external and internal speakers at the same time. It wont work for me due to the latency or delay to my bluetooth - it plays the same tune a second or out of sync - so in one room they are just into the chorus while the other room they are still on the verse!!
Anyway download Audio highjacker and go to itunes (or whatever audio you want to highjack) open audio jack and click the application in its menu window. make sure source type is 'application' and mute is off - then click highjack - then 'click here to insert effect' choose 4fx and then auxillary device output - this will bring up a menu where you can choose what you want playing thru the other speakers or internal - this is from memory so apologies if its a little inaccurate - but this will play internal and external speaker at the same time - although not perfectly sychronised
    hope this helps
    cheers
    Mike
