Can unsaved pages documents be recovered?

Ok so can you recover anything from pages if you didn't save the document?
My laptop froze and I had to restart it and was unable to save my work. Is my work completely lost or is it recoverable?
Sean

Sean,
If I may, I would like to offer a workflow that works for me and prevents this problem.  It doesn't require third party programs.  When you open a new template, before you type the first word, press Command-S and give your document a name and storage location.  After each brilliant, or mundane, idea hits the page, press Command-S again and keep going.  Never go further into your document without pressing Command-S than you are willing to lose and have to re-do.

Can an unsaved pages document be retrieved after a screen freeze?

When your working on a  unsaved file, it's contents are in RAM or temporary memory, if the power goes off then the contents of this RAM is lost.
When you save the file, it's written to pernament storage (hard drive) and can be retrieved, only losing the difference between the last saved state.
Some programs have a temp save ability that will notify you that it has a file "recovered" and if you wish to resume using that copy. It saved the file for you to the hard drive without your permission or knowledge which can or cannot be a lifesaver.
There are third party utilties that can invoke "Save" periodically on most all programs that don't have this recovery feature, if it's a new file, obviously a Save As will occur and you have to give it a name, but it's good for people who don't remember to save their files periodically.

  • What does this mean? "Unsaved Pages Document.pages" couldn't be moved because you don't have permission to access "Autosave Information".

“Unsaved Pages Document.pages” couldn’t be moved because you don’t have permission to access “Autosave Information”.
I am not able to "duplicate" my Page or Keynote document. I am getting a dialog window that says "“Unsaved Pages Document.pages” couldn’t be moved because you don’t have permission to access “Autosave Information”.
I noticed that I have three different log in accounts on my computer, much to my surprise. Could that be causing this problem?

That's unlikely. You would have had to save a document into another user's account and be trying to work on it - directly from their account.

Have you checked the permissions on your Autosave Information folder? Here are mine.

  • Restore unsaved page document

Would anyone know how to restore an unsaved page document? Accidently clicked X button on the left hand side since I figured I was typing things with trial version of it (although had purchased version). Thanks in advance!

    Hi Fruhulda
There is no longer an X in the button when we run under Lion.
But at this time, I'm like you, I don't know which system is used by the Original Poster.
Pre-Lion systems don't deliver an AutoSave feature.
Lion deliver one but we must to save at least once to get it working.
Mountain Lion enhance the feature. AutoSave apply automatically even if we don't save once.
Of course the name and the location would be default ones.

  • Where can I find unsaved Pages documents? (default storage iCloud -- Former "mobile documents" folder)

Hey all, i have a serious situation here. I have written a a term paper in pages last friday and must have have soemhow forgotten to save it. Now i just wanted to proof read some sections and I had to find out that this document doesnt exist. Not on my mac, not in iCloud. To cut to the chase - After hours of reserach I have found out that unsaved iwork documents have been saved to ~/Library/Mobile Documents prior to MAC OS 10.7.3.
I actually have found rather complicated manuals on how to get this mobile documents folder up and running but I guess it will only start saving stuff in there by now...?
So before I spend another 2 hours trying to get the mobile documents folder back into my librarby I rather start writing my paper all over
Maybe someone of you has experienced a similar problem and can help me out here... I seriously could cry !! So dont want to write everything again...
Please help me!! Thanks a lot!
    Cheers Tobi

    Hi
I'm having same issu over here.
    Her is my setup
iMac 27" 2014 running Mavericks latest version.
    iPad Mini running iOS 8.0.0
MacBook Air 2013 running latest version of Yosemite Public Beta
    iPhone 4 running OS 7.1.2
Everything was working like a charm using iCloud Drive and all my Keynote, Pages and Numbers files stored on iCloud.
I could sync with the iMac due to the fact that I'm still on Mavericks, but that didn't bother me. And I don't use Keynote, Pages or Numbers
    on my iPhone 4.
I just got an iPhone 6 Gold 64 Go and this is where it all went wrong.
After installation and update to 8.0.2 and setup of my new iPhone, I launched
keynote to see if I could access the presentations I had been working on.
And oh! Horror!!! A popup saying presenting have been deleted from another device....
So I hop back over to my iPad Mini where I had been working on an important presentation... Gone!!
All my presentations... Gone! More that 30 of them... Vanished.
But no problems with Pages or Numbers.... Weird....
Please Please Please help Apple.... I need these files and was solely relying on icloud for backing up my work. That was probably a bad bad move.
Thanks for helping. I see I'm not alone....

  • Recover unsaved pages document

Is there any way to recover a .pages document that I closed without saving?

No, but if you feel like it's worth it, upgrading to Mountain Lion or Lion through the App Store will give you autosave and versions functionality.
If you're not comfortable doing this yourself, the apple store can help you.

  • Can a Pages document be shared with two iCloud accounts?

Is there any way that a Pages document could be shared automatically between two
    different iCloud accounts?
iCloud gets my documents to all of the devices with my iCloud id.
Now I need to share it with someone with a different iCloud id.
    Thanks.

You should each use your own icloud accounts, not the same one.  You can share calendars, and you can each the other account as a secondary account.
You can set up a secondary iCloud account in system preferences > mail, contacts and calendars, click to add a new account, choose iCloud, click the 'create ID' button.

  • Is there any way i can keep pages documents and numbers documents in the same file?

Im trying to group pages and numbers documents in the same file is this possible?

Not on the iPad itself, no. iOS apps keep their documents within each app itself. You would need to save the documents to a WebDAV server. Dropbox can serve this function if partnered with DropDAV. See:

  • Can't open a pages document

It seems it should be very easy to transfer between the 2 mac programs. but I cannot open a Pages document with another computer running Appleworks 6. As Sagesse notes, AppleWorks can't open Pages documents because it was released/updated years before Pages was made available. Apple does not claim that AppleWorks can open Pages documents.
Pages does not perfectly convert every document to a Word format. Nothing but Word does this.
But, plain text is plain text. It has no formatting, fonts, styles, etc. That's why it's called plain text and why your formatting, etc is 'screwed up'.
Regarding Peggy's advice that AppleWorks cannot open Pages documents converted to RTF. This is generally true, but not technically true. In any case, it's easy to work around.
AppleWorks, Pages and Word can all open RTF files. However, if you include an image in a RTF file, it becomes a RTFD file. So because most Pages documents contain images, these files will be exported to a RTFD file format. AppleWorks and Word cannot handle a RTFD file. To work around this either: don't add images to your Pages documents, or open the the RTFD file (it's really just a folder containing a RTF file and the images) so you can open the RTF file in AppleWorks or Word.
HTML is a poor format to rely on for word processing documents they look different from browser to browser.
AppleWorks can only import PDF files, page-by-page, as images.
Before you consider purchasing MS Office, first download NeoOffice/J. It's a free clone of MS Office that does an almost perfect job at Office file translation.
    Cheers.

  • Unable to open Pages document after emailing to colleague

I need to send a Pages document to a work colleague, where the document must be in pages format (not pdf or other).
We both use G4 powerbooks, latest tiger and iwork.
But when I email the pages document (via apple mail), two odd things happen:
    - the file arrives at my colleague's email address in zip format, requiring unzipping...
    - the unzipped pages file cannot be opened in pages, instead an error message 'the document cannot be opened' is received.
We've tried using apple mail, thunderbird, webmail, ... but to no avail.
How can a Pages document be emailed, as a .pages file, and then opened by someone else?
    Guidance welcomed.

    RossM,
Peggy explained why you need to zip Pages (and Keynote) documents. Mail.app tries to be smart an zips the files for you.
I recall that I saw a zip attachment in earlier versions of Mail. Now I just see a Pages document icon. When I delete an e-mail with a Pages attachment, it shows up in Trash with a zip attachment.
When I saved the zip attachment (testname.pages.zip) and unzipped it, some strange name appeared. I then simply removed the zip extension from testname.pages.zip and was able to open the file in Pages.
I'm not sure if this behavior is specifically with 10.4.6 and Mail 2.0.7 but check your versions and try to rename the "zip" file.
At least Peggy's suggestion to zip Pages documents before attaching them to an e-mail should work.

  • How to save a Pages document as a Word file

I downloaded the new version of Pages hoping for better Word compatibility. To be honest I can't see any difference in the compatibility.
Apple says on their page for Pages 5.0 that you can save Pages documents as Word files. "You can save Pages documents as Word files. Or import and edit Word documents right in Pages." Since they say "save" and not "export", I figured I could treat it like I would in Word. Do I still have to export the document or can I now just save it as a Word file without ending with duplicates?

    You have to Export.

  • Insert a numbers sheet into a pages document?

I've got a worksheet in Numbers that I would like to integrate into a Pages document. Later versions of Word allow you to actually insert an Excel "object".
Is there a similar technique with iWork '08? I tried copying and pasting the cells from the sheet and while it seems to accomplish what I need, the fact that I can't reorient the page to landscape causes the content to be pretty squished. For some reason I can't rotate the pasted content via the Metrics Inspector either.
    Any thoughts on this?
    Thanks,
    Mike

Thanks, that fixes the orientation problem.
Once the spreadsheet cells are pasted into the pages document, can you edit them like a spreadsheet? I clicked on it and it rotated it back for me (which is nice) but I don't see how to do something like "insert row" etc.
What is the best suggested practice with iWork '08 when it comes to managing an uber-document that is really a combination of text and complex spreadsheets. Is it best to create/maintain the Pages and Numbers stuff in separate files until you are ready to publish the document? Can a Pages document "link" to a Numbers table?
    Thanks,
    Mike

  • Lost my pages document, can I recover it anywhere?

              Hello,
    the history of it:
I had a situation with the apple software "aperture" where rendering out a large slideshow to video to external drive actually used up the remaining 50 gigs of hard drive space on my local drive within the laptop. as a result "disk utility" showed 0 disc space left. resulting in me not being able to save my "pages" document before I closed it. (amongst other problems).
I had spent over a year writing this pages document as a journal every other day. (no backups). I had really ended up trusting my mac because of its robust performance this last 2 years >.<
I had pressed "discard or close" something like that from memory when trying to close it before shutting down my computer due to zero disc space left. but that should have only got rid of the days writing correct ?? / not deleted the whole document... !!
I had deleted the trash after logging back in to try and free up disc space (not realizing that perhaps, the pages document had been moved there).
Is there anywhere I can retrieve this document its gone !.  (I have managed to get some disc space back but cannot find the document).

    Hi john,
It depends. What OS are you running? What application? How/why did the Mac shut down? Have you restarted and looked for recent documents?
