Can update from osx 10.6.8 to yosemite?

Is it possible to upgrade from OSX 10.6.8 straight to Yosemite?

Hi Gerchak,
I just checked and I have a MacBookPro 6,2, Intel Core i5, 2.4 GHz, 4 GB memory.
Since I don't have a 7,1.. does that mean I can't run Yosemite? I'm a bit confused though because...
On this page: How to install OS X Yosemite on your Mac - Apple Support
It says..
Before you install Yosemite, make sure you have one of these Macs:
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
My MacBook Pro is from 2009 so it fits the description.
Now, where can I even download Mavericks (it isn't on the App Store anymore)?
Thanks!

  • Hey guys, Just want to know if i can jump from osx 10.5.8 straight to 10.6.4? Is there an update in between ? All i see available to purchase from apple is osx 10.6 (there is no third number)

Hey guys, Just want to know if i can jump from osx 10.5.8 straight to 10.6.4? Is there an update in between ? All i see available to purchase from apple is osx 10.6 (there is no third number) but yet i saw a guy online selling snow leopard 10.6.3 so it left me wondering if i would need to purchase two upgrades as oppose to one!
    Cheers

Updates from 10.x.0 to 10.x.last are traditionally free, and are available via Software Update.
The version upgrades from 10.x to 10.y will traditionally cost you some money.
Make sure your Mac meets the requirements for 10.6 — if you're on PPC, you cannot upgrade to 10.6.  (For reference, here are the Lion 10.7 system requirements.  The 10.7 upgrade requires 10.6.6 or later, and can be purchased by calling Apple directly and acquiring a download code, if it doesn't show up in the Mac App Store for you automatically.  I don't think your hardware would be supported with 10.8, if you're presently running 10.5.)
In any case, you can purchase an official Apple Snow Leopard 10.6 DVD disk for US$20.
Back up your system before installing the new software.
Once you install 10.6, you'll run software update and the 10.6.8 combo update will be downloaded and installed for you.  That's free.  10.6.8 allows you to use your trackpad, as well as access the Mac App Store and some other tools; it's the most recent version of 10.6.

    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.

  • HT201364 I would like to update from OSX 10.7 to 10.9 but...

I would like to update from OSX 10.7 to 10.9 but the store says I can not
run Mavericks on my computer.  Why is that?  My hardware specs are:
    Model Name:          Mac Pro
    Model Identifier:          MacPro1,1
    Processor Name:          Dual-Core Intel Xeon
    Processor Speed:          3 GHz
    Number of Processors:          2
    Total Number of Cores:          4
L2 Cache (per Processor):          4 MB
    Memory:          4 GB
    Bus Speed:          1.33 GHz
    Boot ROM Version:          MP11.005C.B08
    SMC Version (system):          1.7f10
And over 700Gb of disc space.
Is this machine really too old to run Mavericks?  Yes, I would dearly like to purchase a -new- MacPro, and I probably will soon, but this "old" machine still has a lot of life in it and upgrading to 10.9 would make it that much nicer when I give it to my niece.

Kappy> not capable of booting a 64-bit kernel or running 64-bit extensions.
Huh? My MacPro has two 64bit Xeon processors!!
    jayv> I don't think it's the Xeon as it is 64-bit.
    Yes, thank you!  :-)
jayv> Apple does not explain why it has set these specific limits as minimum requirements.
I'll say.  That is probably why my previous post which questioned possible "marketing" decisions has been removed from this discussion.
So now I have a museum piece that can go up on eBay in another 30 years.  Nice.
Thank you all for the rapid replies!

  • After updating from OSX 10.5 to 10.6 clicking on new links in firefox make the snapshot sound but no picture is taken

I updated from OSX leopard to snow leopard. When clicking on links to open new tabs or windows firefox seems to be activing a certain sound. The sound is exactly like the one used to indicate a snap shot of the screen has been taken. But as far as I can tell no picture is being taken, only that sound is being produced with every new tab or window generated by clicking on links. The sound is very annoying.

Disabling all ad-ons seems to get rid of the issue. After enabling the ad-ons one by one, the only one left to be enabled is iPhotoPhotocast 7.0. I believe this was causing the issue.

  • HT1338 how do I update from OSX 10.5.8 to current OSX

How do I update from OSX 10.5.8 to the current OSX on my MacBook.  I'm having all kinds of issues becuase I can't update to the newest iTunes and my iPhone4s apps stopped downloading and all the message boards are telllinging me I need to use iExplorer which I don't have because I have an older OS.

Start by checking if you can run Snow Leopard:
Requirements for OS X 10.6 'Snow Leopard'
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
Whilst Apple have withdrawn Snow Leopard from their stores, you can still get it from Apple by calling 1-800-MY-APPLE (if you are in the USA) and they will supply the SL DVD for $20 for a single user, or $30 for a family pack that covers up to 5 Macs.  You can also purchase the code to use to download Lion from the same number (Lion requires an Intel-based Mac with a Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, i7 or Xeon processor and 2GB of RAM, running the latest version of Snow Leopard), or you can purchase Mountain Lion from the App Store - if you can run that:
    http://www.apple.com/osx/specs/
If you are outside the US call your national Apple Helpline:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57
If you're in the UK, use this number: 0871 508 4400
When you have installed it, run Software Update to download and install the latest updates for Snow Leopard.
To use iCloud you have to upgrade all the way to Mountain Lion:

  • What happen to window partition when i updated from OSX 10.6 to 10.7?

When you install 10.7 or later, a Recovery HD partition is created taking a small part of the bottom portion of the BootCamp partition so it will be slightly smaller.
However upgrades can go bad and you need to backup regardless.
    Most commonly used backup methods
If you can only upgrade to 10.7 on that machine and can't go to 10.8, then really it's almost a wasted effort really.
You should know your PPC based programs that are running under 10.6's  "Rosetta" are NOT going to work if you upgrade to 10.7 or later.
Be prepared to buy all new programs.

Also there is a performance issue especially after you software update 10.7 to the lastest version, it's more defined on older machines.
If it's not a Early 2011 or later, I would stick with 10.6.8 on it as it has about 30% version share, almost the same as 10.7 has. Apple is paying attention to Snow Leopard, recent security updates have been issued.

  • Software update does not work when I try to update from OSX 10.6.8 to OSX 10.7.  How do I update?

How do you update from OSX 10.6.8 to OSX 10.7?  Software update app does not perform update.

That's because 10.7 is not an update, it is an upgrade that you have to buy by using the App Store app, not by using the Software Update.
    It costs $19.95: http://store.apple.com/us/product/D6106Z/A/os-x-lion

I want to update my OSX 10.6.8 to Yosemite. My MacBook 7.1 fits the requirements. But when I download 10.10.1, it says that 10.10 is required. Is there a way around this? I want all my MacBooks using 10.10.1 now. Thanks!

Thanks, Ralph Landry11. That's what I get also. That's for the 10.10.1 upgrade.  See the version on the third line.
That’s what you should download from the App Store.
If you didn’t use the App Store, but instead used the Apple Downloads site, then you got the update, not the full installer.
The full installer from the App Store will only be 10.10.1. The only version available in the App Store is the latest version.
    This is what you download:

I have a G4 MDD Dual 867 Mhz. I have downloaded a OSX 10.4.2 updater from the Apple downloads area. I have OSX 10.4.11 and it won't allow me to install it on the selected drive, and I get error message:
"You cannot install Mac OSX Update on this volume. This volume does not meet the requirements of this update."
Can someone tell me what's wrong?

Can someone tell me what's wrong?
Nothing. Mac OS X 10.4.11 is the eleventh update to Mac OS X 10.4, while Mac OS X 10.4.2 is only the second. The numbers in a portion of the version number are supposed to be read as an unit instead of separate ones.

  • Can't update from OSX 10.8 to OSX 10.8.2

I just bought a new MacBook Pro 13 inch display with 500GB HDD and 4 GB RAM.  The unit shipped with OSX 10.8.  In my SW updates, I'm trying to update iPhoto, but it says it requries OSX 10.8.2.  However, 10.8.2 does not show up in my "updates" in the App Store, and if I try to buy it in the App Store, it says I already have Mountain Lion.  I assume the upgrade from 10.8 to 10.8.2 is free, so why does 10.8.2 not show up in my app store?   How can I upgrade to 10.8.2?

I'm not sure why it is not showing up, but you can download the update from here:

  • Duplicate content that I can update from one source?

I'm trying to figure out how to manage duplicate content in one document. Is there a way I can update one source of that duplicating content?... Link multiple instances of the same content to a source?
Snippet files? Object libraries? I've tried both. I'm either headed in the wrong direction or am missing a crucial step, or I could be SOL.
Here's an example: I have a procedure step that reads, "Insert the installation CD into the..." It's in five different places in one document (sad, but true). I want to change it to read, "Insert the installation disc into the..." How can I make that happen (without changing it five times)?
    Thank you.

Thanks for the answer, Peter. That's sad news, but it keeps me from banging my head on the top of my desk or saying bad words to my computer as I try to find a way to do it.
I'll try the find/change idea (on a copy).

  • Where do I look to find the purchases I am told I need to transfer to iTunes Library before I can update from 7.0.4 to 7.0.6.

Before I can update  my iPad from 7.0.4 to 7.0.6 I am told I must transfer some purchases to iTunes library. How do I identify these purchases, find them and then transfer them to the iTunes library?

You don't need to find them or identify them. iTunes does it for you. When that dialog box pops up, just click on Transfer Purchases to begin the process and iTunes will take care of all of it for you.
New apps, songs, books, etc, ...anything that you downloaded since you last synced with iTunes will be transferred.
