Can USB extension cable from nano burn out tower's USB port?

I recently plugged my 1GB nano into my Mac flatscreen's USB port and got a message that this port was too slow. I used it anyway but it did take a looong time to charge the nano. Normally I use the two ports in the screen to park a couple of dongles and since that port is slow for iPod purposes , I decided to buy an unpowered USB hub, 1 to 4 variety to run from the tower.
My G4 is in a closet with a not-so-accessible port on the back so I have a 6 foot extender cable coming from the tower which connects to the hub and from there I plug in my camera and keyboard - but so far not the nano. The guy at the store where I got the hub told me that an iPod nano recieving power from this settup might burn out the USB port in the back of my G4. So I haven't tested that! Anyone know if this is true or if it's just uniformed blather from a drugstore computer sales tech?

The "too slow" message you received has nothing to do with how long it takes to charge the Nano, it is telling you it will take longer to sync the Nano. If the port on the screen charged your Nano it didn't take any longer than any other port will.
A USB extension cable will not burn out the USB port on your computer.

You really need a newer Mac Mini with a true HDMI output, because that Mac Mini's DVI output does not support Audio.
You might try a 3.5mm to RCA adapter
from the Mac Mini's headphone jack to the TV's audio input,
but that would require being able to select the Audio input in the TVs menu while using it's HDMI input.
Optionally you could also use an external 2.1 Speaker System or patch the audio from the Mac Mini to your home stereo system to enhance that older Mac Mini's audio.

  • USB extension cables not reading

I have a desktop and the ipod cable is too short to reach the usb in area without it being on the ground and i want to be able to have it on the desk but the cable was to short so i tried a usb extension cable but the comuter wouldn't read it or charge it. i've tried with 5 diferent size and brand cables.

Sometimes USB extension cable do not work. You can Google for long iPod sync cable and fine many places that sell long cables. For example here is a six footer.

  • Does the Aluminum Mid-2007 Intel-based iMac include a USB extension cable?

    Hello everyone,
I live in Canada, and my Aluminum (Mid-2007) 20" iMac did not include a USB extension cable for the keyboard. I have read on the forums that other members' Aluminum iMacs did not come with it either. I also read someone from Japan who said his iMac came with the cable, but I am not sure if he had an Aluminum or White iMac. I know that the standalone new keyboards do come with the USB extension cable. I would like to know if your Aluminum (Mid-2007) iMacs came with this accessory. Please let me know if it did or did not. Thank you for your help, and I await your reply.

P.S. I bought my iMac the same day Leopard launched, and then I received it in the first half of November.

    Hi Bob and mrtotes,
Thank you very much for your helpful replies. I apologize that I have been away for a couple of days--I have been very busy with final assignments, so I did not get to reply to you until now.
I do find the cable a little short after I slide my keyboard tray under, but all I have to do is turn Mighty Mouse around before then. Other than that, Mighty Mouse's built-in cable is long enough when I am interacting with my iMac.
It makes sense that only the Mac Pro would need the USB extension cable more than the portables and iMacs would. I don't know why I did not think of that before--I guess that's why we we're here when we're not sure! And of course the Mac Mini does not come with input devices unless you ask because the whole point of the Mac Mini is BYODKM (bring your own display, keyboard, and mouse).
Thanks again for your help with answering my questions--I really appreciate it.
    Cya!

  • I have deleted my private folder and do not have enough space to reinstall my operating system. How can i transfer files from my hard drive to an USB drive to free up space when the operating system isn't working. or do i need to erase disk?

i have deleted my private folder and do not have enough space to reinstall my operating system. How can i transfer files from my hard drive to an USB drive to free up space when the operating system isn't working. or do i need to erase disk through disk utilities without erasing data (but will it delete my programs such as photoshop, office, creative suite?

Connect the computer to another Mac and put it in FireWire Target Disk mode, or use the Disk Utility to clone the drive or image specific folders with the USB drive as the target. After you've copied off everything you want, you'll likely need to erase the drive and reinstall the applications.

How can I transfer music from nano to a new computer?  Old computer is gone.

It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer files/docs/pics/music/etc.
Use your backup copy to put everything on the new computer.
If for some reason you have failed to backup ( not good), then you can transfer itunes purchases from your ipod.  Without syncing:  File>Transfer Purchases

  • How can i download movies from my portable hard disk or usb to my Ipad2 ?

how can i download movies from my portable hard disk or usb to my Ipad2 ?

Import them into iTunes, then sync to your iPad. Movies may need to be converted to an iTunes compatible format. There are any number of utilities for that such as HandBrake 0.9.5.
Please get the iPad iOS 4 user guide.

  • Can I use a usb data cable from a classic ipod with my 3rd generation iTouch?

I can't find the usb data cable for my 3rd generation iTouch but I have an old cable from my old ipod classic. It appears to be similar but is it electrically identical for syncing and charging or not?

If it looks the same it should be OK. Some older iPods used Firewire so it the cable has an extra connector (more that the dock connector at one end and a USB connector on the other end) do not use it.

  • How can I transfer HD from old PM G3300 w/o USB?

I have an old Power Macintosh G3: Power Mac G3 DT and still running os9.1. It is time to upgrade but much of what is on the harddrive is larger than the 100mb capcity of the built in zip drive. There is no usbon this computer.
I'd like to backup hd from DT to eventually be able to put on my usb thumb drive but do not want to install usb card on this old computer.
I can borrow a G4 ibook from the office. Many years ago I remember I was shown a way to put a cable between two computers to enable me to access what was one from the other. But do not know if that still will work with old computer and newer unit or what kind of cable to use, orhow to setup thiskind of sharing. Or is their an easier way to transfer info fromold hd using the wireless router in my home...the G3 is directly plugged into the router.
What is easiest way to transfer about 2-3gb from the G3/300 without a large outlay of money,or time?
PowerMac G3 Beige Desktop   Mac OS 9.1.x

    Howard:
You didn't say if you have another computer at home that you'll be using instead of the Beige, or if you have another HD.
    A couple of additional options:
You can pull the HD from the Beige and put it in an external case and use it with another computer or pull the HD and put it as a second HD in another computer.
If you have a spare ATA HD, you can pull the power plug and IDE cable from the back of the ZIP and hook that up to the secondary HD. Have the secondary HD's jumper set to slave. This HD appears on the desktop and you can transfer data at will.

  • How can I prevent others from accessing my camera roll via usb?

How can I prevent other people from accessing my camera via a usb?  I do not want anyone to be able to copy or view the pictures on my iphone.

Yes, leave your personal account running in the background and the guest account in the foreground, or if that's somehow inconvenient (and with fast user switching I don't think it is really), you can lock the Dock with a program like Tinkertool (System?) or Onyx and lock applications from removal by locking their status in file info (apple+a to select all the apps, apple + click to unselect the drawers or non-apps, and then applealti to do multiple file info at once) and then click the lock square. Then back out to the apps folder info itself and lock it.

  • Compatible USB Extension Cables

I have iPhone 5C and previously iPhone 3GS. I have owned 2 USB 6 ft extension cables. The first one lasted 1 year before it began todisplay an error message indicating the cord was not compatible with connected product and stopped charging. I bought the 2nd one after changing to the 5C. In less than 3 months, I started to get the same error message. So my question is, does anyone know of a product that would be compatible with Apple? Both the extenders were by Belkin (black). I recently saw a friend with a white one which looked like an apple product but was not. It was a gift so she couldn't tell me where it came from. Thank you.

If it's a 6 foot lightning to USB cable you need Apple makes their own.

  • How can i transfer photos from my macbook to a regular USB

how can i transfer photos from my macbook to regular USB plugged in it

For a few photos, you can select them in the iPhoto library then drag and drop them to the USB key. This is a copy, so the originals will remain in iPhoto.
To move the whole library, use the procedure described here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1229
NOTE: When you post questions concerning just about anything on a Mac, it is essential to include information about the version of Mac OS that you are running. The latest - what you have, is OS 10.9.1.

  • USB extension cables

My iPhone 3g does not connect to my Mac mini when I use a +high speed+ USB 2.0 extension cable with my iphone dock. Why?
It does not charge it does not sync the computer does not 'see' it.
Is there ANY +USB cable extension+ that will allow me to connect my iphone dock and sync, charge etc?!?

The fatter the better when it comes to extension cables. Also be wary of long cables which might induce a voltage drop.
I have a 5 foot cable that is fine. Its much fatter than the cable on the iPhone sync cable. I also have a real thin one which does not work at all.

  • USB is disabled from GPO but in few machine USB is still enabled

    Hi,
There are few machine on which USB is disabled by group policy but still if i plug in a USB pen drive then its gets connected and gets displayed on desktop. Many times i have updated the the gpo on the machines by gpresult /force cmd and restarted the machine
but still it doesn't work. USB disbaled policy are applied on the this machine and this is confirmed by generating the RSoP and gpresult /h report.html or gpresult /r /scope computer. The usbstr.inf and usbstr.pnf (something like this) permission are only
for system and no privileged permission are given for any user.
Is any thing remaining to check. What else is need to do to block the USB ports.
    Thanks for helping.

    Hi,
Before going further, I am sorry for the late response.
Based on your description, it is that we also need to remove the local SYSTEM account access
permissions to the Usbstor.pnf and Usbstor.inf files.
