Can Use 'any' DVI monitor with Macbook Pro?

I just want a simple 20" or 22" monitor as a 2nd screen for my Macbook Pro 2008 Unibody
Can I use any monitor as long as it says "DVI"? and then get the mini-display > DVI adaptor to run it from the macbook?
For example any from this list here would be ok : http://computers.shop.ebay.co.uk/Desktop-PCs-Monitors-/171957/i.html?trkparms=65%253A2%257C66%253A1%257C39%253A1&rt=nc&_nkw=dvi%20monitor&_catref=1&_ dmpt=UK_Computing_ComputerComponents_Monitors&_sc=1&_sop=2&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14. l1581&pgn=2
Would these work ok? as i dont need the huge 27" Apple display as its out of my price range..

Would a VGA monitor work with the mini display > VGA adaptor? or is this not as good quality?
It might, but VGA is an older analog standard and DVI is digital, so DVI should produce a better picture.
Sorry for all the questions! Also is DVI-D still compatible (whatever that means?)
According to Wikipedia, DVI-A is DVI to analog and DVI-D is full digital. So DVI-D is what you would be using anyway, if you were connecting to a DVI port on a monitor.

  • Can I use Front Row on external monitor with MacBook Pro's cover closed?

I've seen that you can use the remote to control Front Row even when the lapatop's cover is closed (on a MacBook Air). Is it possible with a first generation MB Pro? Are there special settings?
    Thx

You can use a MacBook Pro in "clamshell" mode if you have the AC adapter plugged in for power, an external display attached and an external keyboard and mouse (USB or Bluetooth) to wake the computer after it's been closed. This is the official word from Apple:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3131
However, even if you don't have a keyboard and mouse, you should still be able to wake the MacBook Pro using the Apple remote by pressing the "menu" button. (You do still need to have the power plugged in and the display plugged in.)

  • Using Multiple Monitors with MacBook Pro

    Hello,
Is there a way to connect 6 additional monitors to my MacBook Pro?

    Hi there,
I was wondering if you could help me out. I am trying to run 2 x 1900x1200 external displays (DELL ultrasharps 24") using my MBP. I have the Triplehead2go DP edition (just released in Q3 '09). I've downloaded the latest driver from the Matrox website, and I have the Matrox miniDP to DP adapter. I am using the DP male to male cables which came with the DELL monitors. Everything I have read has suggested that this set up is possible and supported by MAtrox. The trouble is every time I plug in the DP cable into the computer - MacOSX crashes (and hard!!! not even resolving when the cable is removed). I would very interested if anyone has successfully used the TH2G DP edition with the MBP (unibody) for this setup. Apple seems to think that the problem is with the device, not the software. MAtrox tells me they can't reproduce the problem and that I should have the device replaced (which I am arranging). Do you have any ideas/suggestions. I would appreciate your help.
    Cheers,
    Frustrated!

  • Dual Monitors with MacBook Pro fails using the battery

    Hi guys
I am sorry I am new with Apple and need a help from you guys. I have a MacBook Pro (retina) and connected two monitors to it, using Thunderbolt plugs.
It works fine when I close the lid and one monitor gets the Apple OS and the other I run Windows (VMWare). The problem starts when I remove the power
from it and run using the battery. Monitors got blank display and I have to plug the power back to the MAC, in order to get the OS back. I've tried any combination on the System Preferences/Display and Energy Saver. No go!
    Any ideas?
    Thank you!

I had the same issue a few months ago when I tried connecting to external monitor, it is only possible to run external displays from a Macbook Pro while the power cable is attached, if you try and connect to external display without having the charger attached the external display will flash your desk top for a second and then your Macbook Pro will go to sleep.  Hence connect your charger every time you wish to connect to external display, its not a problem with your Macbook Pro, it's just the way of Apple. Hope that helps.

  • Any advice about running a 24" monitor with Macbook Pro?

In a far city, 3,000 miles from my tower and Apple Cinema screens. I have to edit a film from a little MacBook Pro laptop (2.16 GHz Intel Core Duo, max 2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM).
I borrowed a 24" Acer, plugged it in. Seems to look okay for editing. But panning and any movement is generating mild breakup, like a thin slash through the image. I'm wondering if there is some way I can set up the laptop to more efficiently drive the external monitor?
So far all I've done is plugged it in, and set it up as the playback screen for Final Cut Pro.
Any suggestions would be most appreciated...
    Ben

According to the Apple spec sheet, your external monitor port should support up to 2560 by 1600 pixels on a MacBook Pro 2,2, which I think you have. You could try setting the external to smaller res numbers and see if that helps.
My 22" LCD monitor has a maximum res of 1680x1050 and I suspect the native res on your 24" external is less than the 2560x1600 that the MBP is supposed to support.
Are you in spanning mode or mirrored mode? Might try both and see if one works better.

  • HT2494 Using a webcam on an external monitor with macbook pro?

I have a macbook pro connected to a dell external monitor.  I was wondering if it were possible to use my monitors webcam instead of having to use the one built in on my macbook pro?

bigred1622 wrote: ... possible to use my monitors webcam ...?
Yes it's possible if the monitors webcam is Mac OS X compatible.  If you do not have access to the system compatibility documentation for your monitor, Dell or the people who sold you the monitor should be able to tell you.

    Yes

  • Triple monitors with Macbook Pro Mid-2014

Despite having three video ports (two Mini DisplayPorts and one HDMI) I can't get three monitors (HP EliteDisplay E231, 1920 x 1080) to work with my brand new Mid 2014 MacBook Pro 15-inch 2.2GHz with the Intel Iris Pro video controller. I've seen videos on youtube of people successfully connecting three monitors to older 2013 MBPs. What am I doing wrong?
I don't understand what the issue is, the Intel Iris Pro can address over 1GB of memory, that's more than enough to drive 6.2 million pixels, and the thunderbolt 2 ports are 20 Gbit/s each!
Multi Stream Transport seems to be broken in Mac OS X. I've also looked at USB 3.0 Video Adapters, but there are no Thunderbolt to USB hubs, and it appears that Apple broke all the drivers for DisplayLink adapters. I've even tried a Matrox triplehead2go dp edition, but even that doesn't work correctly, the matrox controller software won't let me drive all three monitors at 1920x1080.
I have an HP EliteBook 9470m with an Intel HD 4000 that has no problems driving these three monitors.
Seriously, what the ****? All I want is three monitors to work.

Yes that is exactly the configuration I used, these are the cables I purchased from amazon:
    StarTech.com 6 ft Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort 1.2 Adapter Cable M/M - DisplayPort 4k with HBR2 support

  • How do I get full resolution on external monitor with MacBook Pro

    Hi,
I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro:
    https://support.apple.com/kb/sp620?locale=en_QA
And it states I can run an external monitor at 2650x1600. I have bought a BenQ BL2710 which goes to 2650x1440:
    http://www.benq.com/product/monitor/bl2710pt/
I can only get 1080p - the OS (Mavericks) does not have any option to go higher. I have tried connecting MiniDisplayPort to DVI via an adaptor, and I have tried MDP to HDMI using an adapter. Have I missed something?
    Thanks,
    Nick

Figured out I need MPD to DP has HDMI has a max res of 1080p.

  • External monitor with MacBook Pro

I have a new Macbook Pro and have it hooked up to an external monitor and an USB Apple keyboard in my home office. How am I able to power the laptop on without opening the display and have it display only on my external display? When I am at home I'd like to use my external monitor and not my Macbook display.

Having the computer with the lid closed is dangerous cause even when just browsing the web with flash content it starts heating up and I've heard about casess of melted displays. Besides, the wifi strength is reduced and you can't use the keyboard and the trackpad.
So, for Lion users, it's possible to just use the external display with the lid open:
    1. In Mission Control Preferences activate one Hot Corner to put the display to sleep.
    2. Connect the external monitor and plug in the power source to your computer.
    3. Move the mouse to the Hot Corner to put the display to sleep.
    4. Close the lid and wait a few seconds.
    5. Open the lid and voila!
    Take care!

  • Can't pair iPhone 5s with Macbook Pro via Bluetooth

I have an iPhone 5s and Macbook Pro with retina display (running on iOS 8.0.2 and Yosemite respectively). For some reason, my iPhone can never see my MBPr but the MBPr can see the iPhone. Pressing the "Pair" button on in the Bluetooth setting panel in OS X will trigger the pairing confirmation to show up on my iPhone. After confirming the pair request, the devices remain connected for no more than 2 seconds. Then they just disconnect. (The status is "Not connected" underneath my iPhone on the Devices list in OS X)
This has been bugging me for a while, even before I upgraded to iOS 8 and Yosemite. I was hoping the upgrade will solve the issue but apparently not. My iPad  on the other hand has no problem in connecting and remaining connected to my MBPr. That's just baffling.
Just some context: the reason why I wanted to connect my MBPr and my iPhone via Bluetooth is because I want to use my my iPhone as the hotspot. Yes, I can use the USB cable, but can't blame me for trying the wireless route (And no, connecting via wifi doesn't  work)
    Any help is appreciated!

  • 4k Monitor with Macbook Pro Retina 15-inch?

    Hey guys,
I recently obtained a Dell UP2414Q Monitor - it's the 4K monitor. I'd like to know if my MacBook Pro Retina 15-inch from Mid 2012 can drive the montor becuase I heard that I can only use the monitor if I have Thunderbolt 2 or something.
    Help?

There have been some reports of users with late 2013 MacBook Pros, with the discrete NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M (with 2GB of VRAM), being able to use 4K monitors at 60MHz: but this doesn't apply to 2012 models, I'm afraid.
    Sorry,

  • How do I use the App store with macbook pro and mac pro

I currently use the app store with the mac book, but want to buy (share?) apps and music with the mac pro.
I can't find anything that specifically outlines how this works.
I use SplashID with the macbook and an iPhone, and want to use it (and sync it) on the mac pro as well.
If you buy apps for a macbook, can you use them on a second machine, or do you need to buy it a second time?

Your license from the MAS allows you to download and install the apps on as many Macs as you own or have under your control (institutional or employer supplied Macs.) The Mac should to be running Mac OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard or Mac OS X 10.7.2 Lion. Open the MAS app on the Mac Pro and sign into your account to have access to download all of your previous purchases in the Purchased pane.
Simple apps can also be dragged & dropped over a network connection from the MacBook to the Mac Pro.
