Can use of smcFanControl all the time be destructive to my macbook pro?

Hello forum,
I grilled my hands on my MacBook pro for over a year now till I found this lovely small application called smcFanControl. This app really keeps the temperature of the surface of the keyboard low only if the fan power is >50-60% all the time.
Now my question is if it is harmful to the fan if it's working all the time? or is there any limit for that? like say higher than 90%?
Thank you,
Stan

I would just like to chime in here and vouch that these fan control apps will make a difference when graphics or video ecoding (Handbrake) for example.
Then there is the other side of the hill, where encoding and CPU is normal for that high temp because you wouldn't expect video to encode at a cool would you.
Then again, while these apps do their job, be careful, as "forcing" the speed to to stay cool may genate more heat as fans spin up to reduce to cool it down. Thats my understand anyway. Based on that i'd prefer to just use iStat to monitor, not control which control.
I mean, the temps rise for a reason when encoding/ graphics intensive use. Your basically asking the machine to take it it its limits, which may work fine, but its probably on the boarder line.
Also, just for the record, its not only Apple that has sensors that prevents overheating.. Most Intel chips do and shutdown when heat is above and beyond.
Just out of curiousity, what is the max. fan temps on the MBP ? I know it was 6200rpm on the 13"

  • Fan runs at max almost all the time on a 2.16GHz MacBook Pro

My fans are running at 6000 rpm for no reason. I've noticed this for a while but now I realize something is wrong.
I tried resetting the SMC (pulled the battery, held power button down for 5 seconds) and no luck. As soon as I turn it on and it comes up with the log in screen, the fans are running at 6000 rpm. I have 51 processes running right now and the one using the most cpu is activity monitor at about 2 to 4 ('m assuming percent).
I'm wondering if there is another way to reset the SMC on a 2.16GHz MBP?
And has anybody else had a similar problem?
Should I redownload and reinstall the firmware update for this model, I think I recall a while back a fan firmware update for it?

    I've had the same problem.
On my 2.16 C2D MBP it was the thermal sensor of the GPU's heatsink that was intermittendly losing connection (you can see that in programs like Temperature Monitor and Hardware Monitor).
I opened up my MBP and reseated all the little sensor connectors I could see and now it works again...
First I'd run Apple Hardware Test from the installation DVD, it may throw an error that you could post.

  • How can i get or download the apple hardware test for a macbook pro made in 2012 running Mavericks 10.9.3

Does anyone know how can i get or download the apple hardware test for a macbook pro made in 2012 running Mavericks 10.9.3. Thanks.

    Sean and Andy -
I have to agree with Andy here. I am having the same problem on a mid 2010 MBP (6,2). I have already read the AHT info provided by Sean's link, and they are less than helpful. I'm sure they will be helpful to those who find that they work, but they are confusing if this is not the case. For example, my MBP(6,2) came with ONE (not two) installation disks, so the instructions don't work for me. Another issue is the instructions confound the descriptions related to the MBP, the original (delivered) software (OS X version), and the current installed OS X upgrade software.
So here's what does NOT work for me...
         (A) I cannot install 'Disk 2', since I never received this with my original (new) purchase in mid 2010.
         (B) I have checked my firmware versions and they are all up to date, as per Apple's information.
         (C) As suggested in another thread, I looked for /Library/Core Services/.diagnostics and it was NOT present. I followed his instructions, downloaded the correct (I believe) dmg, and installed it. It is in the correct place, and I can see all the invisible files using Pathfinder.
         (D) When I re-start holding down the D key (immediately), it just goes through the normal boot routine; no evidence of AHT.
(E.1) When I re-start holding down OPT-D, I get a spinning globe, and then it prompts me for a network (wi-fi) connection.
(E.2) For some unknown reason, the prompt identifies between 2 and 5 of my --neighbors'--  routers, but does not show mine. (??!!)
(E.3) The routers are listed alphabetically; however, my router SHOULD be at the top of the list by this criterion, but it is nowhere to be seen.
(E.4) The 'internet recovery' process then allows me to enter a network name AND password. I do this, for my current wi-fi router, and the process rejects it as an incorrect login ID. It is NOT an incorrect login ID!
So, now asking Sean and Andy (or anyone else) for further suggestions... ???  As Andy suggested, many people ask questions here because they have -already- worked through the 'official' recommendations, and have found them to be inadequate.
Any advice would be appreciated!  TIA.

  • Why does iTunes use 100% CPU all the time, hogging my Macbook Air?

Decided to post this here instead of the iTunes forum, since it might be related to hardware too.
New owner of a 2011 13" Macbook Air, core i5 based.
My problem started about 1 week ago, after it had run out of power completely one day. At the first boot after that it was incredibly sluggish, totally unusable. After waiting for 5 minutes and still being unresponsive, I turned it off and then back on. Then it booted fine. HOWEVER, ever since that time I noticed the following behavior:
    - iTunes stays at 100% + CPU all the time, mostly between 100-120%. Even if it's not playing. Even when I deleted the entire library and left it empty.
    - iStats reports CPU idle between 50-65%. However, CPU temperature is still about 55 degrees C (which, I think, is far less than what it should have been with 50% idle cpu). I can confirm the low temperature by touching the chasis.
    - the cursor freezes and jumps every few seconds, making the mac kind of unusable with iTunes open.
This has been going on for 2 weeks now. The problem goes away every now and then (iTunes sometimes goes back to regular CPU usage of 3-5%), but most of the time it's there.
    Help!
    P.S.
    Mac OX X 10.7.2
    iTunes 10.5.2

Cee Pee You, is a OS modification. Apple recommends that you un-install these prior to a OS update because Apple makes changes to the OS all the time which breaks programs like these.
I avoid Unsanity LLC products like the plague. Notice the company is a Limited Liability Corporation (LLC), which makes it difficult to sue the company in case of a defective or malicious product. So the risk using their products is all yours. Their APE framework modules have been used for malicious purposes because anyone can write a module that uses the APE framework.
I also avoid installing anything that requires a administrative password unless I completely trust the source, like Apple mostly. That admin password is the key to the security of our machines, not to be given out lightly or carelessly.
You'll have to contact Unsanity's [email protected] because what I'm reading online is it's very difficult to remove as it doesn't "exist".

  • Not able to use Adobe Reader all the time

I have a coworker who gets PDF documents in her email all the time (multi times daily). These could be POs, they could be requests, they could be most anything.
Here is the troubles ... For the last few weeks to a month she has been able to open and save as for most of the documents she gets. However, this is not the case with all the files. Some will open but not allow her to save. When she tries to go to save as, the computer freezes up on her.
I've checked all her windows updates, adobe updates, etc. This doesn't seem to help the issue any. We've uninstalled adobe reader X (which is what she had most recently with the issue), removed ALL adobe products off the computer, restarted the computer, and then re-downloaded & installed adobe X again. However, when I got back to my desk, there was a message saying that it had happened again.
Computer is running Win XP. Adobe X. All windows updates were completed as of this morning.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your time and assistance.

Don't worry about the 20 questions thing ... I didn't know what else to put that would be helpful at the beginning.
As for what file(s) - it is always PDF docs, but not always the same doc, some small in size, some not so small. For example, if she opens file A, she can view/save. Then opens file B, which will not save. Go back in and file B opens/saves.
As for what program created the PDF, that I don't know.
We use Lotus Note as our email client.

  • Using AC power all the time at home

I want to ask is there any problem if I use my MacbookPro (2010) connecting it to an AC power all the time( meaning I charge it all the time)?
Is this doing harm to my battery?

    Hi and welcome to Discussions,
no harm done to your battery when on AC power all the time.
The charging of the battery stops when 100% are reached.
Nonetheless, Apple recommends to calibrate the battery once a month when on AC power all the time.
    Have a look here http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1490

  • I can haz fade-in, all the time, not sometimes 2x fade-out?

    I made this slide-show as a trial:
    http://mycodsolutions.com/postcards.html
I as not too efficient at my lay-out, not knowing exactly what I wanted.  I know there are better ways to do this, but there it is.
All thumbs are buttons, there are no 'states'.  I did each edit in a round, for example first adding the roll-over, then later doing the transitions.  When I got to the transitions:
If one looks closely one will see that many photos do not properly fade-in.  There was not an option for these images!  Many had TWO fade-outs.  If I delete the offending photo, and re-import, I can do a fade-in.  However this is very annoying!  I am confused about why there is what appears to be an unintended effect.
I was being careful about which transition I might touch, but honestly they are all buttons, so there is simply an over state (and 'down', similarly, copypastaed) defined.
    Any thoughts?

Nice photos! With the structure as you outlined, you are just going to have to carefully look at each button and it's Rollover and Rollout interactions. Are you triggering the fade in and fade outs using action sequences? The only advice I can give it to walk through it again to see if you can spot the differences between the working ones and the non-working ones.

  • Is there a way to roll back ios6? I upgraded before I knew about the new mapping. I used google maps all the time and absolutely hate the new one. Just about everything I've looked for is wrong or missing.

I hate the mapping in IOS6. Is there a way to roll back to the older OS? When I upgraded I didn't know about the mapping change. I used google maps a lot, for a variety of things. In just a few searches I've found more errors or missing landmarks than anything else. I really hate this app!

I agree. How can I roll back to the previous OS? Developers, please post a procedure for reverting.

  • Is there a command which I can use to dump all the configurations as I set out in System Preferences on the Server?

    Hi folks,
I am planning to reinstall OS X 10.6 on my Mac Server.  As such I need to collect all the configurations like User Account, User Password, File Sharing... which all are previously setup in the System Preferences.
Instead of writing them down on paper, is there a command which I can execute to dump all these data to a file so that I can refer to them easily?

I support Mac OS X Server at some schools, so I run it as a Home Server.
I do not understand your question.
Server is a package of additions that runs with Mac OS X as if it were part of the Operating System (login is not required for Server components to start up). It is not a wildly different Operating System. There is even an Installer package that allows you to ADD the server componets to an already-installed Mac OS X
User information such as Preferences are stored in a /Users/<user_name>.
This does not change after you install Server, but you can move the Users folder elsewhere, or you can move the Users accounts to an Open Directory database.

  • I bought a 3TB Time Capsule with the intent of using 2GB as space for Time Machine to backup my MacBook Pro Retina; and the remaining 1TB as network disk space for the Apple and my PC.  But the 3TB all went to the Time Machine.

How can I get from what I have ti what I want.  I am a new Apple user and appreciate detailed instructions.  Thank You

The TC is not able to be partitioned. (Well not without pulling it apart.)
You can create a disk image on it.
    See details under Q3 here.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Time_Capsule.html
It might be better to do as Pondini suggests and plug in a USB drive to use for alternative data storage.. Mixing TM and data can lead to issues.

  • Random people use my printer all the time :(

    Hi.
I have a USB printer connected to my airport express. My airport is connected via ethernet to a subnet in the college dorm where I live. Unfortunately, random people are always printing on my printer. I know there is no way to put a password on the printer, but is there any way to restrict access to the printer so that only people connected to my airport express can print (as opposed to anyone on the subnet).
    Thanks

What you could do is manually assign your Airport Express an IP address on a different IP subnet. Of course, that would prevent not only others from "seeing" your printer and printing to it, but it would also prevent you from doing the same.

  • Is there anything similar to a "blur-cross" transition plugin for FCPX? I used this plugin all the time in FCP 6.

Is there any transition for fcpX that may be similar to a "blur-cross" transition plugin I always used for fcp6?

Did you try the Simple Blur? Could you remind me what the blur cross did that was different?
