Can very uneven audio levels be fixed?

How do I fix very uneven audio with Premiere Pro - Can it be done?
Source/Root Cause: Person I'm filming is speaking into a handheld mike while walking around so they of course can't hold it perfectly steady, level and still in order to produce speech that is consistently even and uniform. Also, in addition, their voice fluctuates to a significant degree & alternates between soft and loud.
Results in: Audio with a substantial dynamic range.
Correction Requires: (because I don't know any better) a number of hours manually dicing up the audio track and boosting the segments that are soft to the extent necessary or trying to salvage the clipped parts.
That intensive process and concentrated effort is: wearing, time consuming, tedious and tests my patience.
I figure there must be a better solution! Experimented with the audio tools but has been shut out thus far & haven't solved the problem.
What should I be doing so I can automatically lower the highs and boost the lows?
All advice & suggestions welcome.
Thank you.

Have you checked out the "dynamics" effect/compressor control?

  • Presonus Firebox problem: I can see the audio levels but can't hear. Help!

Searched in the forums to what I think is a basic issue, but couldn't find anyone with an answer...
I have audio routed into my firebox from an external mixer. I can see the audio meter in the "in" sound panel of system preferences moving but I can't hear sound coming out of my soundsticks.
Audio routed out of my computer into external amp/stereo setup is audible, however.
Can anyone help me figure this out so I can move and and start setting Firebox up with Logic? LOL

Yes, line outs from the mixer are hooked up to line ins 3&4 on the back of the firebox. What I can't figure out is that the Sound Panel of System Preferences shows a good input level, whereas the meter in Logic shows nothing (rec is enabled and blinking). If I switch cables to the 1&2 instrument ins on the front of the Firebox, I get levels in both Sys Prefs and Logic. I'm thinking, the problem can't be the Firebox, because the computer sees the signal either way. I'm running Logic 6.0 Platinum BTW.
I find Presonus and their manual to be lacking. They take days to write back with curt responses... Either they don't have enough people or the Firebox is not expensive enough for them to devote to customer service... I don't know

What's gotten turned off so I can't see my audio dB levels when I raise and lower them in the Timeline audio tracks? How do I turn them back on?

What did they look like before you lost them? There are more than three different ways to see that information. Which one were you seeing? You can alos use the FCP manual to search for LEVELS.

  • Can you raise audio level on just the left side of a stereo track?

Video with two lavs and two channels but capturing as stereo. One of the lavs is really low. Anyway to just raise that one side? I have Premiere CS5.52 and Audition 5.5 but don't see an obvious way to do what I need in either program.
    Thanks for any help.

For myself, I prefer the Fill effects.  That'll center the channels.  You'll have to duplicate the audio track and use Fill Left on one and Fill Right on the other, but you end up with easily adjustable audio.
But doesn't that leave you with two same mono tracks with the whole signal from both channels in there?
For me the easiest way is either apply the Channel Volume effect from the effects panel to the audio clip in the timeline
or, as Bill suggests, the Break out to Mono from the context menu to the source clip in the project panel.

  • Can I control audio levels on files to make all uniform?

Relatively new user. I evidently mistakenly thought all digital music files would have a uniform volume setting. As I find that is not the case, is there a way to adjust files to achieve a uniform volume level?

The adjustments are done through iTunes.

  • Low audio levels on itunes purchased music video's

Can anyone tell me how to boost the audio levels on purchased itunes music video's ?
I have purchased a few videos lately from the itunes music store and occasionally I find the odd one which has very low audio levels. I assume that itunes has not monitored some video/audio files closely enough when importing them into the in tunes system itself and the audio levels have fallen a little low on certain tracks. Have a look at some of the Eurythmics songs - 'Angel', 'Missionary Man', or 'Best of You' by the Foo Fighters for example.I have boosted these tracks by 100% within the in itunes track options, but its still a very low level compared to some of the other tracks I have downloaded.
I tried to import one of these video files to Mpeg Stream Clip to see if I could use the audio boost function within that program but it didn't like the video file ? I presume because it was an itunes purchased video, therefore a protected file.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this or what setting I should be using, doing with Mpeg Streamclip to fix this problame if this program can fix this issue ?

  • Audio Levels

I now I can boost the audio levels in the timeline
but what is a good range for the recorded audio levels
when they first come in to FCP ?
I have footage that's coming in at -2.4 dbs and peaking
a little above that and under -1.8
I assume this is lower than optimum
    thanks

The dynamic range of your mix is dependent on the final viewing environment. For example, movie theaters have large, relatively expensive sound systems that can reproduce a large dynamic range. Television speakers are much smaller, and often the listening environment has more ambient noise, so very quiet sounds may not even be noticeable unless the overall signal is compressed and the level increased, which reduces the dynamic range.
For example, television stations normally accommodate only 6 dB between the average loudness and the peaks. Dolby Digital feature film soundtracks, on the other hand, can accommodate up to 20 dB between average and peak levels. This is why loud sounds in a movie theater sound so loud: they are much louder than the average level.
When you mix your final audio, you choose a consistent reference for the average level. When you choose the average reference level, you are actually choosing how much additional headroom you have before your signal distorts. The higher you set the average level, the less safety margin you have for peaks in the signal. This means that the loudest sounds in your mix cannot be much louder than the average levels, and so the mix is less dynamic.
    Acceptable amount of dynamic range:
    Theatrical Dolby Digital 20 dB
    Average videotape 12 dB
    Television broadcast 6 dB
If you set the reference level of the Final Cut Pro floating audio meter to –20 dBFS, you have nearly 20 dB of headroom, since 0 dBFS is the digital limit for the loudest sound. If you set the reference level in your sequence to –12 dBFS instead, you have less headroom. Even though the average level of your audio is higher, there won’t be as much dynamic range.
How much dynamic range you allow in your audio mix depends on its ultimate destination. If you’re editing a program for TV broadcast, a reference level of –12 dBFS is fine, since you are only allowed 6 dB of dynamic range anyway. But if you’re working on a production to be shown in movie theaters, consider using a reference level closer to –18 or even –20 dBFS (both of these are frequently used standards).
Remember that the ultimate goal is to ensure that audio doesn’t peak over 0 dBFS in your mix (as displayed in the Final Cut Pro audio meters) and won’t peak over +3 dB or so on an analog meter.

  • Plugging in headphones results in audio level jumping... why?

Why does OSX think the best thing to do after plugging my headphones in is to turn up the audio levels 5x, blasting my eardrums?
Why can't it keep the volume as is, and let me adjust it instead? I now have this intense fear when plugging in headphones i start smashing the audio down level, but inevitably there is a delay and the volume starts to blast.
This seems insane to me given most headphones are now in peoples ears, the upping doesnt need to be done automatically.
Seems it's actually trying to remember that last used audio setting, but that seems risky given different types of headphones can result in very different audio levels (over ear / in ear).

Your phone is? and are the headphones fully inserted?
If  i have helped at all a click on the white star below would be nice thanks.

  • Setting audio level points?

I am trying to change the level of an audio in a sequence. I double clicked the audio clip to open the waveform in the Viewer. I know there is a way to select various spots on the audio waveform and mark them. Then you can drag the audio level line to a new setting to adjust that part of the waveform. But I don't know how to create the spots on the waveform. I can't find the answer in the Help manual.
    Thanks for any info.

You need to select the Pen Tool which is to the right of the timeline.
You can also do it by pressing p
Then click the pink "level" line of the audio and a keyframe will be created. Click further along and you can drag the sound up or down etc.

  • Audio Level Meter

Does anyone know where I can find an audio level meter that is either written in Swing or can be integrated with my Swing app?
I have not found anything in my web searches that really makes sense.

I've just started looking for the exact same thing. I'm glad
you posted first, I think you've explained the need better than I
would have been able to. I was thinking I may have to use an
embeded SWF, but the only thing I've found was in AS3.

  • Can multiple audio levels be adjusted simultaneously in AE7 Pro?

Very often, I'll be doing audio editing in AE7Pro, and even though each sound clip isn't clipping, the combined volume of them all does cause clipping.
Is there a way to select a number of audio layers and uniformly bring the volumes down simultanesly, rather than going to each one and pulling it's level down, one at a time?

Hi, Andrew. This isn't for a permanent type thing... just for editing my audio levels (in a dense mix). So, expressions are not practical.
As for precomping... I sort of am already (each precomp is a video clip with a number of audio clips accompanying it). But, since the sum of (otherwise) 'within level' clips can (and often does) push the overall level up past the clipping level, I have to play with the balance of each audio layer within that precomp. But, ya, once all those clips are brought into the main comp, I could ride the levels as each clip comes on.
Mylenium's solution is perfect for what I'm doing. Thanks anyway.

  • CS3 How do I fix inconsistent audio levels?

With cs3 I'm creating a montage with video and pics. The audio from the video clips i'm using isn't the greatest. I'm having a hard time getting the audio to match the level of the song playing in the background. As each video clip fades in as I lower the audio level of the background song but its a harsh difference between the 2. Is there any fix to muffeled voices in the video in clips? Is there a set standard for the audio levels that would smooth it all out. Also, it seems to be inconsistent when played on different dvd players... meaning it sounds ok on one and horrible on another.  Thanks if you can help!!!

I set my Audio Levels by ear, and by hand, with a little watching the meters. This ARTICLE will give you two methods, and explain the differences.
I am much less a fan of Normalize, as I find that it seldom does exactly what I want, and often really raises any noise floor, while not having the desired effect for the other Audio. Also, this ARTICLE might be helpful for cleaning up Audio.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • I have been editing my films and spent hours fixing the audio levels. Everytime I close and re-open final cut audio levels go back down.

I have been busy editing my film and for the third time now, i have been correcting my audio levels with each clip  - this takes me hours - and everytime I go back to the project, the audio levels fall back down. So everything i did previously was a waste of time.
Does anyone have the same issue? Is there anything I am doing wrong here?

Gosh, that sounds aweful close to the same problem people are experiencing with the undo bug. They don't know their having a problme until they hit Command+Z to undo their last change, and they can't, the undo command is actually grayed out in the menu. I understand if this happens, X is not auto saving your changes either. So, the next time you make all of your changes, check to see if your undo command is grayed out from the menu. If it is, duplicate your project to force a manual save. Then Quit X and reopen it and insure you project is intact.
