Can video quality harm an ipod?

Hey,
I just recently upgraded from my ipod 2G to an apple 5G. I purchased 3rd party software to convert all my old videos over to mpeg4 files. The quality is about the same as it was on my computer (which makes me happy), but some of these videos were horrible quality to begin with. Can playing these "horrible" quality videos on my ipod ruin it in anyway? By horrible quality I mean they have static, poor lighting, etc.
Thanks!
Steve

Not necessarily, just better logic. Every piece of a video is broken down to a simple output of light in a pixel. The quality of the video is how many pixels are used within the video. How could how many pixels that are differently colored harm the iPod?

  • IPod Nano Output to Projector: Video Quality

    Hey guys,
I'm looking to buy a few iPod Nano's to use when we play video montages to our clients via LCD projector. Before I buy a bunch of these, I'd like to know what the output video quality will be. These are simple slideshow's created on iMovie and currently, we burn a dvd and simply connect the video out from the dvd player to the projector.
I'd like to simplify this by putting the video on a Nano, then connecting it to our LCD projector. Will I get similar results as with the DVD?
    Thanks!

The audio/optical out port will accept the tonslink miniplug for digital out only. You can also use the port for 1/8 " headphones without the miniplug. The video out is on the otherside, its the DVI port. The macbookpro comes with a DVI to VGA adapter. You should hook up your projector to the DVI or the VGA. If you projector does not have DVI or VGA you can adapt from VGA to RCA.

Backing up an iOS device will copy some data to a backup file within iTunes, but this excludes all media.  You can also transfer iTunes Store purchases from the iDevice to iTunes but, without using a third-party tool, nothing else.  As long as you do not sync the iPod with your new library, the media that's on it will remain ... for as long as it keeps functioning, is not lost, stolen, eaten by the dog, ...
You may also have an option to recover your previous library from your old laptop; as long as its hard drive isn't fried, a computer repair store or technician may be able to extract the drive, mount it in an external enclosure, and copy your data to another PC.  Whatever you choose, there is no real alternative to having all your media on your computer, managed by iTunes, and regularly backed up to another device/location.

  • Can I view videos taken on my Ipod Touch on Apple TV?

I've recently purchased my Ipod Touch 4th generation and Apple TV 2nd generation - I don't seem to be able to view videos taken on my Ipod on Apple TV. Would appreciate any feedback.
    Thank you

You will have to import the video into your iTunes library and convert it to an AppleTV version. You can find this option in the Advanced menu in iTunes ->create iPad or AppleTV version

  • Videos converted to MP4: can't get them onto iPod

I have converted videos from YouTube via tubeget.com to a mp4 format using my PC.  They appear in the Documents --> Videos folder on the PC, a Windows Media program.
I can see the files in iTunes when I try to add them to iTunes using the “Add file to Library” option under the File menu in iTunes. But when I click on the mp4 file I can’t get it to transfer over to iTunes.  That is, when I click on the file via “add to Library”, the file doesn’t appear under Videos in iTunes.  And thus, of course, I can’t get the videos into my Videos folder on my iPod Classic.
The iPod is supposed to be a 5th generation.  I bought it used from a reputable seller. It readily accepts music videos downloaded from the iTunes store, and it readily accepted a transfer of music files from iTunes to the device.
    Any suggestion?
Thanks in advance for your help.
    Jay

If you don't see the videos in iTunes, that would be the initial problem, and that part is not related to the iPod.
You can use that Add to Library command from the menu bar, but it's sometimes more "informative" if you do it this way...
First, create a new playlist, so that it appears in the iTunes sidebar.  If the iTunes sidebar is not visible along left side of window, from the menu bar under View, select Show Sidebar.  If you have a lot of playlists already, you can start its name with an underscore (_) symbol, and it will appear at or near the top.  Select that playlist in the sidebar, so that its content list is shown to me right (currently empty).
Then, open a Windows Explorer window that shows the video files.  Drag one of the video files from that window, and drop it on the playlist (on the currently empty list).  If that video file is compatible with iTunes (iTunes can play it), it gets imported, and it appears on the playlist.  It also appears in the iTunes library, under Movies.  Using a playlist as the place to "drag it to" just makes it easier to spot.  If it works for one, drag the other videos you want to add, to the same playlist.  On the playlist, you can edit the names as needed, and add other info such as Artist.  Then try adding them to the iPod.
NOTE:  You can select multiple files to add at the same time and drag them all at once.  You can also select the folder that contains the files to add, and drag that folder to the iTunes window.
If the video file format is somehow not compatible with iTunes, you will not able to drag them to the iTunes window.  Well, you can drag them there, but they will not get imported nor appear on the playlist.  And that would be the problem to solve first.
Either way, you'll be a step closer to figuring out the cause of this problem.

  • Can it harm my ipod touch in any way or the files on it if it was connected to the computer while updating to a new version of itunes?

Also, I tried asking support before I tried this forum and I think I asked it under the wrong category (troubleshooting and not using ipod with itunes) and they had me run an ios diagnostic test, if I'm not having trouble with my ipod and I ran it can that harm the ipod or affect it in any way?
    Thank You!

I'm not having any problem that I can see, I was just curious as to if it can harm my ipod or any files on it if I have it connected to my computer while I'm updating to a new version of itunes. It ejected a few times and then again when I had to restart my computer. It seems to be working fine I was just wondering if it can affect affect the ipod at all if I have it connected while updating to a new version of itunes.
And also if running ios diagnostics from support can do anything if I wasn't having trouble. I wasn't able to talk to anyone because I'm out of warranty for tech support for that device.

  • Video files exported with QuickTime Pro 7.2 can't be transferred to iPod

If I use the default Export to iPod export choice in QuickTime Pro 7.2 to export video files and add them to my iTunes 7.3 library, when I try to sync them to my 5th generation iPod with video (November, 2005), I just get the "can't be played on this iPod" message. I can create, transfer, and play video files on my iPod if I create them a different way (by using iSquint, ffmpegX, or No Frills DVD2iPod, for example). Exporting to mpeg4 using h.264 results in the same problem, even though I've used settings I know worked before. The export to iPod export choice does not offer any customization of settings. Although this problem is new, I can't be sure the immediately previous version of QuickTime Pro didn't also have the problem, but I know I have successfully used QuickTime 7 to create videos that could be transferred and played on my iPod in the past. How can I use QuickTime Pro 7.2 to create video files that will be compatible with my iPod? Thanks.
      Mac OS X (10.4.10)

I can also verify this (QT Pro 7.2 exporting to .mp4 not compatible
with video iPod [firmware 1.2.1 on both 5G/5.5G units]).
This results in the unusual situation where custom H.264 output
is operable on the iPhone but not the iPod.
    Example: your iPhone should play
    http://homepage.mac.com/retiarius/sample.elements.mp4
but it won't transfer to a video iPod.
Yes, the workaround is to 'export for iPod' or do the conversion
within 'iTunes', but this in many circumstances will generate
    larger files.
The closest description of this situation is:
    http://lists.mplayerhq.hu/pipermail/ffmpeg-devel/2006-September/015930.html
Perhaps Apple will release a video iPod firmware update soon
to get the 'uuid' atoms and whatever watermarking they are
    using these days straightened out.
I'm surprised this hasn't been noticed more by video podcasters
who dutifully use Apple's own QT Pro encoding tool to optimize
filesizes via the tunable H.264/.mp4 codec settings.

  • Can it harm my Ipod touch if it was connected to my computer and Itunes while I'm installing a new program that makes lights flash on my computer?

I was installing and I'm not sure why but the lights on my caps lock flashed without me touching it. Can that harm my Ipod? If installing a new program affected the usb drive can that harm my Ipod while it's connected?

It should be OK as long as you are not syncing or doing data transfer via US like backing up or restoring

    Thanks Tgara.
Its funny. So far the responses have been 50/50 on this question. I even asked two seperate Apple Store employees here in NYC, and got two different answers! One said yes, the other no.
    Argh!
I know from watching the keynote speech about icloud and iOS 5 that you will be able to cut the cord between the pc and ios devices like the ipad. No more need to sync them via a cord. So will that mean i would then be able to load video directly to the ipad via tha cam kit connector from my ipod? Also i wonder if/when Apple will allow HD video from on Apple devices like a canon dslr to be able to transfer to the ipad via the cam kit connector AND be able to EDIT that footage in imovie for the ipad. Speaking of imovie for the ipad...i hope it gets an update soon as well.
Anyway....with the macbook airs getting updated next week with thunderbolt and new sandy bridge chips....i may just get one of them instead of the ipad 2 for editing video on the road. Still...i prefer surfing the web experience on the ipad. Grrrrrrr. **** youuuuuuu Apple!!! Lol

You can have Apple replace the logic board, but it will be at your expense.  The free replacement program has ended.

  • How can I convert Itunes video albums tracks to ipod tracks

How can I convert Itunes video albums tracks to ipod tracks?

3pg is an odd format... That or I just never seen it before. :P
iTunes just ***** at converting videos. So far all videos I tried converting with iTunes have resulted in the same error you got.
You're better-off using 3rd party apps, and then copying to iTunes, and then copying to the iPod.
Unfortunately I don't know of any conversion programs for Windows.
If you by chance have a mac, this program works great: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/flv2itunes.html
The mac version of Handbrake below works great, hopefully the Windows version does, too:
    http://handbrake.fr/?article=download
When converting with handbrake, make sure to use the iPod preset for the out-put video.
    Hope this helps a little.
