Can Viruses on Windows Run While I am Using OSX

Hi,
Today I ran a Clamxav virus scan on my windows bootcamp partition while using my normal OSX operating system. The scan detected a Trojan.agent in the official google chrome (downloaded from google.com) and a Trojan in the official steam app (both on windows). And then I suddenly remembered one of the reasons I switched to mac D: .
Suddenly in my time of need my mac crashes on me in my time of need, possibly because of a memory shortage as the activity monitor when I last checked it said that my scan (that was still running) was apparently using 96% of my memory. Anyway now it's crashed and my whole mac has become unresponsive. I don't want to shut my computer down manually incase if any of my files get corrupted because of the scan being force shut down.
So my computer is running on OSX but my question is if any of the viruses on my windows partition can still run and communicate information to their 'master' as there is still a supply of electricity? Sorry if its obvious.
Also here are some bonus questions: 1. How could a trusted source e.g. Google and Steam contain viruses if they are downloaded from the original source? and
2. Can iOS devices get viruses and I know this is probably in the wrong but 3. What anti-virus scanner and remover tool do you recommend for windows. The only one I am familiar with is Kaspersky?
Many thanks

Here's a positive thing: Windows viruses can't run on OS X, but they can be transferred from OS X to other PCs (only if you have them on the OS X volume).

You could get a virus from a different source that infected Steam and Chrome without any problem. Viruses normally try to infect as many files and programmes as possible.

iPhones, iPads and iPods touch can't get viruses but they can transfer them to other PCs. For Windows, I recommend Microsoft Security Essentials

• How can I install windows XP in my Macbook using bootcamp?

I`ve just bought my mackbook Pro and I`m student of engineering. I`d like to install windows XP in my macbook to use some especifics softwares! But when I use bootcamp, Mac just gives me the option to install Windows 7? How can I install Windows XP? Thanks at all!

Bootcamp 4 which ships with Lion doesn't support XP or Vista, only 7.  Try using Parallels or VMWare instead.

• Can my MBP still run while lid is shut?

So I know on my PC laptop that you can choose an option that tells teh computer to not do anything when the lid is closed. Is there a similar option on the Macbook Pro so that I can close it but still allow the internet to run and stuff to download. Let me know, thanks!

the only way to keep the machine at work w/ the lid closed is to plug in all of the following devices first:
- external power
- external mouse
- external keyboard
- external monitor
as someone above said, a simpler alternative is just to dim the display...
not only is this simpler, but it's probably also better for your machine. one of the hottest spots on the computer while running is just above the function keys (between the function keys and where the display hinges connect to the machine).
w/ the lid closed, you're limiting air flow there. the machine would then run a lot hotter, and that's never good to do if it can be avoided...
cheers

• New windows minimise while I'm using it

Every time I open a new firefox window (ctrl-N or right click -> Open in New Window), I start using the new browser window, scrolling etc, and about 3 seconds after using the the window minimises and I'm looking at whatever was underneath (usually my original browser window).

Hello,
Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.
(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)
* On Windows you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
* On Mac you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the option key while starting Firefox.
* On Linux you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by quitting Firefox and then going to your Terminal and running: firefox -safe-mode (you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
* Or open the Help menu and click on the Restart with Add-ons Disabled... menu item while Firefox is running.

Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the Troubleshooting extensions and themes article for that.
To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.
When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help other users who have the same problem.
Thank you.

• Can I try out FF4 while continuing to use FF3?

I look at the forum and see all sorts of problems being talked about when people make the switch from FF3 to FF4, and I don't want the aggravation. So I'd like to try out FF4 and work my way into it while still being able to use FF3 which I know works well and doesn't give me any hassles.
I'm afraid that if I install FF4 then I'll no longer be able to use FF3 and I will have to fiddle with FF4 for days and days to get it to work properly, and during that switch-over period I won't be able to access the internet as easily as I can now with FF3, and will lose valuable time and get frustrated and wish I hadn't made the switch in the first place. I've had that problem in the past when upgrading an earlier version of FF and it was very frustrating indeed.
So to put the question again, can I install FF4, but be able to continue using FF3 while getting FF4 configured and fine-tuned with all the features, layout etc. that I want (a process which, in my experience, always takes more time than one would have thought)?

@ ocertain I lasted about a month with the FF4 & tonight I couldn't take it any longer I went back to FF 3.6.16.. Prior to making the change back I did take some of supports suggestions to make 4 look like 3 but they were just bandages on a cut to try & stop the bleeding in the end the cut was still there..
I found that FF4 was like having IE & if I wanted to use IE I would have.. I don't know who designed FF4 but if you're going to upgrade something you have to remember the operative word is 'upgrade' so making it worse was the wrong direction..
As a former systems analyst I found FF4 a disaster in response & in visual appearance, so I wonder how many end users were in the testing group for this product & how much negative testing they did before they released it ?
They can send me an alert when the soup is cooked & ready to eat until then I will stay with FF3..

• Can I install windows on a Mac Mini using a disk copy of my Dell laptop

I am just aquiring a late 2012 Mac mini to replace my aging Dell laptop.
My copy of Windows 7 is an U/G copy from Vista, however my Vista copy is an OEM version
and so will only install on the Dell.
Can I make a disk copy of the Dell HDD and install on the Mac as though I am installing onto a new Windows HD?
Any help will be much appreciated as though I have a Mac Book I'm not a Mac expert by any means

I doubt it. How did you plan to install it?
Using bootcamp?
A virtual machine like VirtualBox?
Those install using a ISO or DVD

• Youtube identified my Safari 6.0 as IE6, and some websites even identified my OS as Window XP while I am using mountain lion. I wonder what is going on?

When I go to Youtube, it said "You are using Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 web browser. YouTube is ending support for Internet Explorer 7 soon, update your browser now", but I am using Safari 6.0 on OSX Mountain Lion. I wonder if there is any settings cause this identification error. thanks!

• Im swithching from 2007 macbook pro 17" to 2011 macbook pro 17" . Can i clone the old hard drive and use OSX 10.5.8?

Can I install OSX 10.5.8 on a new macbook pro which comes with Lion? I would like to clone my old hard drive onto the new mac without lion causing compatibility issues????

What if replace the new 2011 MBP drive with a brand new SSD with snow leopard pre installed?
Snow Leopard may be possible, depending on whether it was shipped from the factory with SL and had Lion installed in the supply chain, or if it shipped with Lion in the first place. However the SL version would have to be the one which was originally installed or later, which likely means 10.6.7 or.8. The retail 10.6.3 installer won't work, nor will an installation cloned from a different Mac unless it was from the exact same model.
Plenty of threads around concerning installing SL in place of Lion - do a search. Some have been successful.
Replacing the HD wouldn't be necessary, and won't make the OS version run the rest of the hardware.

• How can I legally listen to live US Sports using OSX?

We want to (legally) listen or watch to live US College Football and NFL Games. Several sites require Internet Explored 7.0 and do not support OSX.
Also, we are in Japan. I found one site that would not let me access their streamline since I do not reside in the US. Thanks. These message boards the outstanding.

Hello Nancy:
You could try to view the streaming video using Safari (despite the IE "requirement"). You could also try to view them using another browser - Firefox, for example.
Another approach would be to E-mail the "IE only" sites and suggest that they change their code to support browsers that are written to open standards (some will do this, I have found).
Good luck.
