Can Watch Folders Watch Subfolders?

I see no setting for including sub-folders in watch folders. Is it possible?

I, too, am looking for a way to do this. I don't know anyone that just dumps all of their footage from a project into one folder (unless it's just a 1 day shoot or something). All of my footage is placed into subfolders based on Camera and Reel. Would be really great if AME could start encoding, and also keep the same folder structure in my output folder. Otherwise the watch folder, for me, is kind of useless.
Anyone have a solution?

  • PSE 7 Watch Folders

I am evaluating PSE 7 functionality for purchase to replace Google's poorly functional Picasa (constant high CPU).  In PSE 7, I have setup the Watch Folders (including subfolders), but the program isn't scanning/discovering anything.  As a test, I copied a picture into the root of the Watch Folders, and after (literally) 10 minutes it finally discovered it and added it into an album.
If there is more action required other than simply enabling the Watch Folders, then please let me know.  This is not a good first impression of Adobe software.  May just need to stick with open source software if the product cannot be reliable.

The .CR's are from different models.  XTi and T1i.
Have you downloaded and installed the most recent version of the Adobe Camera Raw plug-in?  The T1i requires ACR 5.4, while PSE 7 ships with ACR 4.5.   PSE gets squirrely if you try to work with raw files that aren't supported by the version of ACR you have installed.

As of June 2010 I no longer maintain this FAQ. I’ve migrated to Lightroom 3, which I use for all my organizing and most of my editing (I still use the Photoshop Elements Editor for more involved editing).  Adobe has clearly decided not to invest sufficient resources for properly maintaining the Photoshop Elements Organizer– see my Amazon review of PSE 8. Lightroom is marketed to professionals and prosumers with tens of thousands of photos who demand adequate organizational capabilities, whereas Photoshop Elements is marketed to consumers, most of whom do not want or use the Organizer.
This page captures my answers to frequent questions about Photoshop Elements 6, 7, and 8 (Windows).  It’s mostly about the Organizer, since I know the Organizer much better than the Editor.
The versions to which each FAQ applies are indicated with the notation [PSE 6, 7, 8]. If I’m not sure whether something applies to a version, it will be indicated with a question mark, e.g. [PSE 7, 8?].

  • Can you set up watch folders on PSE 12 on a mac?

Do you have to do this manually when you add new photos? On Picasa there were watch folders and every time you added a photo to it, it would synch with the organizer... I wasn't thinking this was a downgrade when I purchased it.

Watch folders is a Windows only feature.

  • Convert ps to pdf  - watched folders process one at a time ?

does the destiller server process the watched folders one at a time or it can process several depending on the license?
i have the "normal" distiller and i have this problem, if a huge file is being converted, the other files from watched folders are not converted.

I think I found my answer at a different set of instuctions at http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat-com/kb/using-createpdf.html.  This set of instructions clearly indicates that files will be selected 1 at a time.
    Click Combine Files To PDF.
    Click Select Files.
Select one of the files that you want to combine.
    Click Open.
Click Add Files and select additional files to combine. Click Open."
If anyone has any ideas on how to more quickly combine files, any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Is it possible to process watch folders on a MAC (OS X) without being logged in?

We are running Adobe Media Encoder 5.5 on our MAC OS X system with a number of watch folders on our network. This works as expected while a user is logged onto the system but not when logged out. Is there any way to set this up so that AME will still process the watch folders even if the user is logged out?
    Thank you

I don't imagine it will.  If you're not logged onto the network, the program can't access the folder.  If you're not logged into the local user account, the program can't run.

  • Distiller Watched Folders not working Acrobat 9.5.2, Mountain Lion.

I have just installed Acrobat 9.5.2 on a new Mac running Mountain Lion 10.8.2. Watched Folders don't work. When a .ps file is placed in the IN folder, it get processed by Distiller, but no PDF file is produced. The Distiller log window claims the PDF has been produced and placed in the Out folder, but it's not there. The .ps file is moved or deleted, depending on the setting.
PS files can be dropped onto Distiller in the normal way and PDF files are produced correctly, so it's not a problem with permissions. The problem persists in a new user account, so it's not a User pref issue.
Another Mac with the same setup works fine, so it's not a compatibility bug. I have seen only one other forum page with a similar issue, relating to Distiller 6, but it's not clear what the solution was.

Thanks for the thought. No, it's not permissions. As I say, Distiller can distill a file that is drag 'n' dropped on it from that location and it will save a PDF file to that folder.
The problem occurs even when the folders are within the user domain, where permissions should not be an issue. It also happens on folders that have full rwxrwxrwx attributes.
Watched folders work fine on another computer with the same setup, so it isn't any annoying sandboxing that is stopping everyone from doing anything -- as you say!

  • Where is the 'Watch Folders' option in PSE 9 Organizer for Mac?

I'm sure it's right in front of my face, but I can't find it. Thanks!

Thanks everyone for your replies. Bob, thanks to you especially for your candor. I use Adobe products for both photography and graphic design. I have been a loyal PSE user since PSE 4, but I use Photoshop (started out with CS2, now up to CS5) for all of my editing. I only use PSE for my digital asset management. The reason I need watched folders is that any new files I create in CS5 are not automatically added to my catalog in PSE. I switched to a Mac 3 years ago and wasn't happy with any of the alternatives, so I have been using PSE for Mac since version 9. However, over the years, I have found that I don't always remember to go back into the PSE catalog to import after working on something in CS5, so my catalog is always missing some files. I have found a watched folder plugin for Lightroom that seems to work pretty seamlessly in the background, but I found Lightroom not nearly as intuitive to use when I bought LR2 a few years back. Plus, facial recognition is a big feature for me, and LR4 still lacks that. I guess that, for Mac users, there's really no one solution that works as well as PSE does for Windows users.
I guess I'll have to continue my search...Thanks again for your replies!

  • Passing parameters to a workbench process invoked by watched folders

I am trying to pass values to a workbench process that is invoked by watched folders. What I need to be able to do is at least provide a path (string) to the process so that it knows where to store one of the result files. This value is not always the same and for reasons that I don't want to get into, I don't want to use an "output" variable to send it to the watched folder's "result" folder.
So, I had the idea of saving the value in a text file with a standard name (same for each call to the process) and my process would look for this file and import the file contents into a string variable. I wasn't able to do this.
#1 I haven't found a way to store the file content of an existing document variable into a string variable. Is this possible?
#2 I tried using the "Read String" service to read the contents from the file and store them into a string variable. Should be pretty straight forward, right? Turns out the process would just hang when trying to read the file into a string. I then tried changing the output variable from type 'string' to type 'document' and whammo, it worked. The variable logger showed the correct file contents. So it appears that "Read String" and "Read Document" do the exact same thing; read a file into a *document* variable! So now I'm stuck with issue #1 again...
Any suggestions? I have version 8.0.1 of LiveCycle installed.

Let's take a step back here.
The Read String activity will read the content of a file that contains strings into a STRING variable. In fact you need to provide a variable of type string for the output results.
I think the problem is that your trying to read XML content which is not treated as a string by LiveCycle.
If you want to read XML content then use the Read Document activity. It'll put the content of the XML in a document variable. Then you can use a SetValue and put the content of the document variable into a XML variable and use xPath to get to the value you need.
    /process_data/myXML = /process_data/myDocument
You have to use a XML variable if you want to use xPath. xPath won't work on a string variable since the string content doesn't really have structure. You need a XML variable which gives you the structure.
If you really want to, you can convert the XML into a string (using the serialize xPath function) and have the XML treated as a string but I don't think that's what you're trying to do.

  • Acrobat Distiller Watched Folders

I seem to be having an issue with watched folders and the .ps or .eps files I use. I create alot of ads, and use a watched folder to create the PDFs to send to clients. The PDF's always produce properly, and replace the old versionbut the .ps or .eps files never replace with the newest version.
I may have up to 20 revisions made on 1 ad, but the .ps or .eps file will always be the original and the PDF will be current. Is there any way to have the watched folder replace the .ps or .eps files with the newest version?
    Thank You
    Jamahl Umar
    Adobe CS2, PowerMac G5, Mac OS 10.4.11

Thank you for the response. I understand that you can have Distiller delete the eps or ps after processing, but that is not my problem. The problem I have is that I may modify the eps file multiple times, and Distiller will make the eps into a PDF and the old PDF in the watched folder will be replaced, but not the EPS. I want to have both EPS and PDF be the current file and not a current PDF and an EPS from 18 versions ago. Does that make sense? I appreciate any and all help.
    Thank You

  • PSE9 - Watch Folders in multiple catalogs - new files not detected

I run PSE9 and have 2 catalogs (both in a "Custom Location"), one with photos and one with pdf documents.
I have set up "Watch Folders" in each catalog, but I never get any notification about new files.
Service "AdobeActiveFileMonitor9.0" is running - with Local System Account.
Are there any logs to check?
Does watch folders rely on the archive attribute of files?
Does it matter which catalog I have open?

    Hi,
    Thanks for the feedback.
    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
PSE9 Organizer: on wakeup after system sleep it does not recognize external disks
I tried this on my Win 7 machine with a USB device but it worked fine for me... Which OS are you on ?
Also, can you verify if the issue with the watched folder service is persistent if you don't restart the file monitor service each day? Or is it resolved after restarting the service once ?

  • Watch folders stopped working in Elements 8 Organizer

    Please can anyone help?
I upgraded to Elements 8 some time ago and have been successfully using the watch folders service for several months to quickly add my edited photos to organizer. The watch folders has suddenly stopped working. I have read through many forum posts on the subject, but nothing seems to get it back. Adobe Active File Monitor is set to automatic and is started (I've actually tried re-starting it but still didn't work). In Organizer the watch folder is set to the folder and sub-folders I want to import from - same as always. I've tried removing the folder and adding it again.
Not only this, but the alternative, checking the box to add to Organizer when saving my files also doesn't work properly, it only imports the first of a batch of edited pictures. When I go to get media from folder, Organizer tells me the files are already there, which they are, but I can only see them if I close and re-open the organizer.
Can anyone offer suggestions why things have suddenly gone wrong. Nothing on my compuer has changed. I'm using Vista Home Premium. I'm really really trying to avoid having to re-install elements.

I could have sworn that was the correct shortcut.   Here are instructions for navigating to the Organizer's preference file along with some other info that might be helpful.
Step #3 in this document tells where to navigate to that preference file.

  • Watched folders aren't watched!

I have a main folder (and sub-folders) for my images selected but even though I know new images have been added to the folder PSE does not load them.  I can get them by using Get .. from files and folders, but why doesn't PSE actually watch the folders?
Does PSE have to be running when photos are added?  Shouldn't it inspect Watched Folders when launched and add photos that weren't there the last time it ran?

OK, it’s much the same in PSE6 except the watch folder should have an eye icon.
You can right click on your custom location folder in the left hand panel and then choose Add To watch Folders.
You can also right click on individual sub folders and choose Add Unmanaged Files to catalog.

  • [JS] InDesign Watched Folders? waiting for some new document

    Hi Everyone
I wrote a script [JS][InD] which checks folders in search of any files and then process them. It mades PDF files and moves original files to a "processed" folder.
Now I want this script to run in the background by certain periods of time (i.e. 10 seconds) without user interaction. Just like the "Watched folders" function on Acrobat Distiller.
Has anybody some suggestion or solution for this?
    Thank you for your help
    Daniel

    Hi,
It's funny because I tried just right now on my own. As I was looking for help on that topic and then I saw your post :-)
The bad news is that I failed to reach that objective. My thought was to use the startup script folder placing a script that will wait for an amount of time and then check for a folder for specific files.
Alas, it seems that the "waiting" process overides Indesign  and then the user can't use its software :-(
I hope someones here as a solution.
    Bye Loic

  • Premiere Elements 9 Watched Folders

Bottom Line: Based on working with the Premiere Elements 9 trial version, it appears that you do not need Photoshop Elements 9 installed on the same computer as Premiere Elements 9 in order to be able to use the Watched Folder feature in Premiere Elements 9. For Premiere Elements 8, you had to have Photoshop Elements 8 installed on the same computer as Premiere Elements 8 to get a functioning Watch Folder feature in Premiere Elements 8.
    Background
Also, please refer to April 2010 "Watched Folders" thread here where the topic was gone over for Premiere Elements 8.0/8.0.1.
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/616740?tstart=0
There is a feature called Watched Folders which provides for the automatic placement of media in the Elements Organizer when the media are placed into a hard drive folder designated in the Watched Folder dialog.
You name that folder or folders in the Watch Folders dialog gotten to via the route Elements Organizer File Menu/Watched Folders. But in order for that Watch Folder dialog to be available you need to have a specific activated file in Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Services. For version 8, it is “Adobe Active File Monitor V8”, and, for version 9, it is “Adobe Active File Monitor V9”.
Now you can install JUST Premiere Elements 9 and have the specific “Adobe Active File Monitor V9” be present and activated to make the Watched Folder dialog available for use
    (a) Click on the Organizer Tab in the row above the line up Organize Edit Disc Menus  Share
    (b) In the Elements Organizer, go to File Menu/Watched Folders
    (c) If any problems, check the "Adobe Active File Monitor V9" status in Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Services.

If you are shooting in any hi-def format, the video will need to be re-encoded when you produce a BluRay disc regardless. Even if you're feeding HDV in and gettiing MPEG2 out for your BluRay, the video is still being encoded to BluRay format -- so it's not more efficient to create an MPEG2 BluRay.
In fact, since all BluRay players can play H.264 video and since H.264 is a more advanced codec, it makes much more sense to go with this codec for all BluRay discs.
