    Our materials are bellow:

Storage: EVA 4000 (eva disk group)
    The problem is:

    Hello,
there's no extra RAC software package, but the option is only offered, if one of the supported cluster layers for the respective OS has been installed before.
10.1.0.3 looks like a complete redesign, but anyway it is a patch, you have to install 10.1.0.2 first.

  • Does managing Oracle 10g RAC with ASM require full root access?

We currently have three entirely separate support areas, Unix, Storage and DBA. We're now considering using Oracle 10g RAC with ASM and as part of the assessment trying to work out if we can still draw similar support boundaries. I know that installing RAC and configuring ASM requires root access but will DBA continue to need root access to manage & support RAC? If so, does anyone know if the commands they need can be RBAC'd or if we just need to share root access going forwards. I've had a look at a number of docs including http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/rac.102/b14197/toc.htm. which is fairly informative but none of them seem to mention the requirement for root access on Solaris. I'm guessing they just assume that it's available, but that's not generally the case in our environment.
    All advice / info welcome!

I would have thought that the only reason you would need root access once RAC and ASM had been set up would be to add more disks to the ASM configuration. This would be needed to change the ownership on the raw LUNs or to make additions to metasets (SVM/Oban) or diskgroups (VxVM/CVM). Beyond that, I can't imagine needing root access.
I'm sure others will chime in if they can think of other reasons!

    Tim

  • Solaris 10 and Hitachi LUN mapping with Oracle 10g RAC and ASM?

    Hi all,
I am working on an Oracle 10g RAC and ASM installation with Sun E6900 servers attached to a Hitachi SAN for shared storage with Sun Solaris 10 as the server OS. We are using Oracle 10g Release 2 (10.2.0.3) RAC clusterware
for the clustering software and raw devices for shared storage and Veritas VxFs 4.1 filesystem.
    My question is this:
How do I map the raw devices and LUNs on the Hitachi SAN to Solaris 10 OS and Oracle 10g RAC ASM?
I am aware that with an Oracle 10g RAC and ASM instance, one needs to configure the ASM instance initialization parameter file to set the asm_diskstring setting to recognize the LUNs that are presented to the host.
I know that Sun Solaris 10 uses /dev/rdsk/CwTxDySz naming convention at the OS level for disks. However, how would I map this to Oracle 10g ASM settings?
I cannot find this critical piece of information ANYWHERE!!!!
    Thanks for your help!

You don't seem to state categorically that you are using Solaris Cluster, so I'll assume it since this is mainly a forum about Solaris Cluster (and IMHO, Solaris Cluster with Clusterware is better than Clusterware on its own).
Clusterware has to see the same device names from all cluster nodes. This is why Solaris Cluster (SC) is a positive benefit over Clusterware because SC provides an automatically managed, consistent name space. Clusterware on its own forces you to manage either the symbolic links (or worse mknods) to create a consistent namespace!
So, given the SC consistent namespace you simple add the raw devices into the ASM configuration, i.e. /dev/did/rdsk/dXsY. If you are using Solaris Volume Manager, you would use /dev/md/<setname>/rdsk/dXXX and if you were using CVM/VxVM you would use /dev/vx/rdsk/<dg_name>/<dev_name>.
Of course, if you genuinely are using Clusterware on its own, then you have somewhat of a management issue! ... time to think about installing SC?

  • Can I implement SAP MM without implementing SAP FICO module?

    Hello all,
Can I implement SAP MM without implementing SAP FICO module?

    Hi Abhijeet,
The answer is Yes and No. Yes, if you have a corporate wide Financial System for taking balance sheet and other reporting needs and you need SAP MM for your purchasing and inventory management functions. Even in this case, you will need a FICO Consultant to setup the minimum FI settings. And to build interface to push the relevant data between SAP and the core financial system. No, if you dont have any other system to track the business financials.
Most implementations will have FI and MM implemented and in few cases, where the corporate wide Financial system is different from SAP, we will have a lean FI implemented in SAP to allow necessary postings.

  • Single 10g Instance to RAC - without ASM migration

Is it possible to comment the following steps to convert existing 10.1.0.5 single instance database to RAC? We're using OCFS2 and it is not possible to perform ASM migration.
    1. Copy the existing $ORACLE_HOME/dbs/init<SID1>.ora to
$ORACLE_HOME/dbs/init<db_name>.ora. Add the following parameters to
    $ORACLE_HOME/dbs/init<db_name>.ora:
    *.cluster_database = TRUE
    *.cluster_database_instances = 2
*.undo_management=AUTO (Add if you don't have it )
<SID1>.undo_tablespace=undotbs (undo tablespace which already exists)
         <SID1>.instance_name=RAC1
         <SID1>.instance_number=1
         <SID1>.thread=1
    <SID1>.local_listener=LISTENER_RAC1
where LISTENER_RAC1 is an entry in the tnsnames.ora file like:
    LISTENER_RAC1 =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = <node1>)(PORT = 1521))
Keep only one line in $ORACLE_HOME/dbs/init<SID1>.ora:
    ifile=$ORACLE_HOME/dbs/init<db_name>.ora
You could also create a common spfile from this pfile and add a line
    like spfile=$ORACLE_HOME/dbs/spfile<db_name>.ora in each init<SIDn>.ora
file. For more details about how to do this, please refer to Note 136327.1.
    2. Open your database and run $ORACLE_HOME/rdbms/admin/catclust.sql to create
cluster database specific views within the existing instance.
    3. Recreate control file if you defined maxinstances to be 1 when you created
    the single instance database.
To check your current setting of maxinstances, run the following command
while the database is mounted or open and connected as a user with DBA
    privileges:
    % sqlplus /nolog
    SQL> connect / as sysdba
    SQL> startup mount
    SQL> alter database backup controlfile to trace;
The trace file is located in udump directory. Check the maxinstance value
in the CREATE CONTROLFILE statement. Please refer to Note 118931.1
Recreating the Controlfile in RAC and OPS
    4. Add instance specific parameters in the init<db_name>.ora for the second
instance on the second node and set appropriate values for it:
*** Names may need to be modified
         <SID2>.instance_name=RAC2
         <SID2>.instance_number=2
         <SID2>.local_listener=LISTENER_RAC2
         <SID2>.thread=2
         <SID2>.undo_tablespace=UNDOTBS2
    <SID2>.cluster_database = TRUE
    <SID2>.cluster_database_instances = 2
where LISTENER_RAC2 is an entry in the tnsnames.ora file like:
    LISTENER_RAC2 =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = <node2>)(PORT = 1521))
    5. From the first instance, mount the database and run the following command:
*** Path names, file names, and sizes will need to be modified
    alter database
    add logfile thread 2
    group 3 ('/dev/RAC/redo2_01_100.dbf') size 100M,
    group 4 ('/dev/RAC/redo2_02_100.dbf') size 100M;
    alter database enable public thread 2;
    6. Create a second Undo Tablespace from the existing instance:
*** Path names, file names, and sizes will need to be modified
    CREATE UNDO TABLESPACE UNDOTBS2 DATAFILE
         '/dev/RAC/undotbs_02_210.dbf' SIZE 200M ;
    7. Set ORACLE_SID and ORACLE_HOME environment variables on the second node.
    8. Start the second Instance.

In order not to affect the current home on node1, another user oracle2 is created which belong to racinstall group. On node2, which doesn’t have any oracle home installed, CRS will be installed so that node2 will become the primary node.
Been looking into this CRS for sometime as the installation has failed due to OCFS2 kernel panic upon running root.sh on the second node. Performed the cleanup as described Doc ID: Note:239998.1 (10g RAC: How to Clean Up After a Failed CRS Install), but now, the installation is failing and giving the error “ File not found /ClusterCRS/install/rootadd”. This message didn’t appear the first attempt which could indicate that the cleanup described in the note was not sufficient.

  • Oracle 10g RAC using ASM - Storage Issue

I’ve an issue related to Oracle 10g RAC.
I’ve 2 node cluster each being Dell 2850 Server with RHEL 4.0
I’ve EMC CX300 SAN storage with following partitions
    /orasoft     10 Gb          OCFS2 File system
    /oracrs          2 Gb          OCFS2 File system
    /orabackup      100 Gb          OCFS2 File system
The datafiles are on ASM which is not directly visible in OS.
I’ve common Oracle Home installed in /orasoft/db_1 which is shared by both nodes in cluster.
I’ve faced an issue recently related to EMC storage.
The /orasoft partition displays 1.4 Gb space available using df command.
With both nodes sharing the common Oracle Home (/orasoft/db_1), when ever I try to touch a file I get an error as No Space left on device. I’m unable to start any service with the same reason.
    Is this setup correct ??
Can anyone help me with this storage issue ??

Need a clarification here...what do you mean by "Storage System"...do you mean a server/node or the SAN storage system. If you are referring to a server/node's local storage, then it would NOT be possible for use by RAC, since the disk space has to be shared among the nodes.
Here is what you can do:
    - Create two partitions/devices (for example Disk_1 and Disk_2) in the SAN storage
    - Create a ASM disk group which would mirror Disk_1 to Disk_2.
Again, please note that the partitions have to be visible and be accessible read/write from both the nodes/servers.

  • 10G installation without ASM

    Hello All,
I have to over see an install of E Business suite with 10Gr2. I have been told by the company performing the install that they will not be using ASM. I understood that ASM was a big thing for 10G and I assumed therefore that it would be used even for an E Business suite install. Can anyone confim this please.

To use ASM also assumes much greater use of
resources. What is your basis for that statement? ASM does consume resources, but not a great amount. Most I have seen it consume is about 60 MB of RAM. I have seen connected sessions consume more resources.

  • Anyone actually implement 10g AWR and ASM?

in 9i and before, we use statspack to monitor performance. in 10g, it provides automatic workload repository. Does anyone use it and get rid of statspack?
Moreover, anyone implement automatic storage management? such as create diskgroup dg1 normal redunduncy. Does it lower the performance?
    thanks

    hi
i used both feature of 10g just for testing purpose on test database..
yes these feature gives little bit effect on performance.
asm instance also use 120m memory from ram.
This is the not right time to use these feature in production database.
and i don't think that 10g rel 1 is suitable for prod database.
and in AWR it also provide information at OS level. like

  • Oracle 10g RAC with ASM upgrade RHEL3 to RHEL4

Has anyone acheived this or know of any documentation highlighting any pitfalls ?

    Hi.
If you are using raw devices for ASM, I would not expect there to be a problem. I would have thought all you have to do is:
    - Stop Oracle from starting automatically on reboot.
    - Reboot the server and upgrade the OS.
    - Make sure all the prerequisites for the new OS are meet (check the isntall guide).
    - Startup Oracle.
Note. It may be wise to do a "$ORACLE_HOME/bin/relink all" to make sure.
If you are using ASMLib with ASM, then you will also need to upgrade your ASMLib software, as this is kernel version specific.
Of course, I've never had to do this, so don't take my word for it :) Maybe an SR on Metalink is in order.
    Cheers

The backup into the ASM diskgroup can be done online.
For the switch to copy and the following recover datafile, the datafile needs to be set offline, though.
The amount of Redo, generated during the Online Backup determines the time the recovery will need.

  • 10g RAC /ASM

Currently we have 9.2.0.8 DB running on Solaris 9.
We're planning to move to 10g, RAC and ASM environment.
Could you refer me to any document (preferably detailed) that covers this case.
    Thanks

I have faced the same problem when i have change the listener port from 1521 to 1526. But the problem disappeared after a clean reboot of both nodes.
First i have stopped all services on both nodes and then rebooted node1, and waited until the node1 is up with all services and the rebooted node2.
I don't know what was the problem actually but got resolved.

  • Installation of RAC with ASM on Solaris

    Hello Everybody
I have to install and config oracle 10g RAC and ASM on Solaris, and as per my understanding network prerequisite is 3 IP's for each node,
    1) A public IP's registered on DNS and
    2) A virtual IP's registered on DNS, but NOT defined in the servers. can be defined later during Oracle Clusterware Install, And
    3) a private IP only known to the servers in the RAC configuration, to be used for the interconnect.
    The scenario is like
The Servers & the Storage are in different Network and hence the public registered IP address & Virtual IP address is not possible. Only Private IP Address can be possible, But both the servers are accessible from to me Please confirm on the same.
    My question is
Is is possible to build the RAC and ASM only with the private IP without the public and the virtual IP, if yes how?
The setup is not going to be the part of any production or any development environment, I am new to this and just wanted to test the RAC installation with ASM.
Your inputs or suggestion are greatly appreciated.
    Thanks for your time.

    Hi,
for a 10g RAC you need:
    - a host-IP for every node
    - a private IP for every node
    - a virtual IP for every node
Host-IP and Private IP must be assigned to both hosts and conenction between the hosts using either the host-IP or the private IP must be possible.
Is is possible to build the RAC and ASM only with the private IP without the public and the virtual IP, if yes how?The term "private" and "public" does not refer to public IPs. It refers to the fact "private" is only for communication between the nodes and public for communication between the client and database.
For a successful installation you need at least these three IPs on each system.
So for instance your public IPs reside in the network 192.168.1.0/255.255.255.0 and your private interconnect network can be 192.168.2.0/255.255.255.0. Both networks consists of private (i.e. non-routeable) IPs.
