  • Can i reinstall the mac os without backup hard disk

I Have question that if it is possible to reinstall the mac os without any external hard disk

It is always recommended to have a backup; however, you can run the installer over your current installation, which should only replace system software. This can be a quick way to fix a broken installation from damaged or missing system files, and it should not touch your documents, settings, accounts, and installed applications...however, as a safeguard, be sure to back up.

    A backup of under 2 minutes . . . not very big.
A backup to tape of hours?
I don't think that is your problem . . . I think you need to check and see if your tapes are valid. If Oracle fails at the end of a backup to tape, it sounds like the tapes are 'bad'.
If the tapes are good: Then look at why it is so slow - I would 'guess' network backup.

I created a partition on my iMac drive. I have trashed the files that were in the partition but I can not trash the icon. I tried with Disk Utility. Any ideas?

If I understand correctly,  the partition will still be on the disk and therefore mounted on the desktop. You would need to remove that partition to remove the icon.
Be careful if you try this, don't upset the main Macintosh HD partition or you may lose the OS and your files.
And always have a full tested backup of your system before modifing disk partitions.

  • Can I use the time capsule as backup and hard disk at the same time?

    Hi.
I want to buy a time capsule.
I wondered, if I can use the time capsule as backup (over time machine) and as a hard disk at the same time?
If I buy the 2TB time capsule, I wanted to use 1TB for the backup and 1TB for hard disk.
    Is this possible?
    Best wishes
    Sophie

It is not recommended.. the problem being anything stored on the TC only is not backed up and cannot be backed up by the TC itself or Time Machine. So what are you going to do about back.. the TC can and do die suddenly.. and the cost of recovery can be huge.
See Q3 here for the semi-right way to do it if you must.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Time_Capsule.html
You can plug a USB drive into the TC and use that for files.. but note, its speed is poor.. fine for wireless as wireless is even slower but you will really notice it if you expect the drive to be as fast as the internal.. it will be a fraction of the internal drive speed. 1/2 write and 1/3 read aprox.

  • Can I use the same drive to backup with Time Machine and Windows Backup?

I've got a 1TB external hard drive that I'm currently using for Time Machine backups and also it stores about 300GBs of music. Can I partition the drive to add an NTFS formatted partition and use that partition with Vista's Backup/Restore feature? If so, how do I partition the drive? Forgive me, I'm a neophyte when it comes to Windows. Also, I don't want to lose the music files already saved on the Time Machine partition.

While you can add HFS+ volumes to an existing drive, adding NTFS requires taking chances: change to FAT and then convert to NTFS.
I'd invest in another backup. I don't even rely 100% on any one backup method; drive; let alone TimeMachine. A bootable backup should also be part of your strategy for OS X. So I would create a smallish 40GB emergency boot volume - for OS X use only.
For Vista, I use the built-in features of Ultimate/Business AND Prosoft Engineering DataBackup PC. Norton Ghost started out okay but gradually deteriorated, though their 2009 360 2.0 or something....
I would not want to use WinClone except as one-time 'snap shot' or emergency; useful when moving to a new larger hard drive, and if your Vista partition is small and not 100GB of files.
I'd look at 500GB+ drive to use solely for Vista backup and media files.
MacSales has $79-89 FW800/400 case for SATA drives, and just throw a good 640GB WD Caviar in for $78 and good to go.

  • Can i view the contents of a backup file made in N...

Is it possible to view the contents of a backup file created using the Nokia PC Suite?

backup file is meant to be restored to phone when in need, so it is not designed to be viewed in PC. (this is obviously because it contains contacts, calendar items, settings, pictures etc., so there is no simple way to view such diverse data in PC just by double clicking one file open.
You can open the backup file with notepad, but you will se that it is cribble, if you look really carefully and are desperate to find say contacts in the middle of everything, you can scroll and look for that certain data.
If you like to view the contents, you should use Image Store to move pictures, File Manager can do that too(sync gallery to PC) and file manager also syncronises SMS's and contacts to PC in readable format.

  • HT3275 How can I program the Time Machine to backup every 4-6 hours instead of hourly?

My Time Machine backs up every hour and when it occurs my Mac operating speed slows down to a crawl.  Is there a way to change the settings so that Time Machine backs up every 4-6 hours or at specific times of the day, e.g. 6AM, Noon and 6PM?
    Many thanks,
    Time Machine Novice

That shouldn't happen, unless you've made lots of changes and have your Mac already pretty well maxed-out.  Changing the backup interval is just addressing the symptoms, not the cause.
Check the size of your backups;  if they seem much too large considering what you've done since the last backup, see #D4 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting for some common culprits, and ways to find out what's actually getting backed-up.
If the sizes seem reasonable, see #2 there for things that may be slowing your backups down.

    Hi,
never tried it, but I know that the shared folders in vbox don't work like normal filesystems.
I would rather setup an NFS server on the host and mount an NFS share in the guest.

  • RMAN backup to disk vs tape

    AIX R 2
    Oracle: 10.2.0.4
I have been testing rman backup strategies on a db in noarchivelog (development) using the following command:
(*) note: if db is in noarchivelog then you must do a cold backup - have the db mounted but not opened.
    rman> backup database format '/a010/d01/bck/%U'
I have found that rman will backup to disk about 2GB per minute. Now I want to test this to tape to compare metrics.
Question: What configurations does RMAN need to write directly to tape?
What are the backup steps to write to tape? Do I need to specify both the tape channel and also where the format output gets written?
    Thanks all.

    OK
You need to install the Oracle driver for Tivoli (optionally sold with Tivoli) and install that in your Oracle software tree.
Then you can configure your channels to write to tape (this is documented).
For the rest there is no difference, although there are no directory names.
