As Per BOL
We strongly recommend that the witness reside on a separate computer from the partners. Database mirroring partners are supported only by SQL Server 2005 Standard and later versions and by SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition and later versions.
Witnesses, in contrast, are also supported by SQL Server 2005 Workgroup and later versions and by SQL Server 2005 Express Edition and later versions. Except during an upgrade from an earlier version of SQL Server, the server instances in a
mirroring session must all be running the same version of SQL Server. For example, a SQL Server 2005 witness is supported when you are upgrading from a SQL Server 2005 mirroring configuration but cannot be added to an existing or new SQL Server 2008 or later
mirroring configuration.
A witness can run on any reliable computer system that supports any of these editions of SQL Server. However, we recommend that every server instance that is used as a witness correspond to the minimum configuration that is required for the SQL Server Standard

We are using SQL Server 2012, Web edition and when it was installed replication is not an added feature so I tried to add this feature but getting below error.
Error: There are no SQL Server instances or shared features that can be updated on this computer.
Description: The version of SQL Server instance MSSQLSERVER does not match the version expected by the SQL Server update. The installed SQL Server product version is 11.1.3000.0, and the expected SQL Server version is 11.0.2100.60
And also please let me know how to identify the default file location of the setup file 'setup.exe' for SQL Server 2012 (Webedition, 64bit) Grateful to your time and support.
I'm using "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\110\Setup Bootstrap\Update Cache\KB2777772\QFE\setup.exe" to add replication feature, please correct me if I'm wrong.

It looks like you are trying to add Replication Components, however, you are using the Cumulative update package 5 setup, which is wrong.
Note that you will not find the setup file for SQL Server on your file system, it will be on your installation media.
To install SQL Server Replication Components, locate your installation media and run Setup.exe. Select the add features to an existing instance option, select your instance, and add replication components.

I have recently bought a Virtual Machine from a data center and installed a Windows Server 2012 Standard Edition on it. As I tried to install the SQL Server 2012 Standard Edition, the data center administrator denied me to do this telling me it is not possible
to install any licensed Microsoft software on a Windows installed on virtual machine created by Hyper-V. It was really strange for me! I wanna know if this is true.

Does Sql server web editon license has kind of restrictions for what it can be used?
I mean can i use it for and only web application database engine or any other application database engine.

Where can i download SQL Server 2012 Standard Edition?

I want to download from microsoft site the SQL Server 2012 Standard Edition software in order to install it to my servers but as i searched in microsoft's site, i can't find
Stanard edition for downloading. I only find Express and Evaluation.

Installing SQL Server 2012 Developer Edition or wait for SP2?

Hi everyone,
I just received my copy of SQL Server 2012 Developer Edition I ordered. As usual, before installing, I searched the web for any hint or other stuff on the subject.
I first found that SP1 was already available. Honestly I prefer installing using the last version available instead of upgrading. I found the SP1 install package using the following web address:

Is this the right install package to use?
Now, still reading everything I could find on that SP1, I found stories about major issues with SP1.

Could you help me please with my problem: what licenses (per core or Server + CAL) should I take for SQL Server 2012 Standard Edition for the following environment:
SQl Server will be installed on VM with 1 core.
Physical processor is Intel Xeon CPU E7-4830, 2.13 GHz, 2131 Mhz.
Few people will have an access to the VM but SQL server is used for a web-application for about 200 users from Active Directory.

Errro while installing sql server 2012 express edition on Windows 8 -64 version

Im trying to install sql server 2012 express edition on windows 8 machine(64 bit),however im getting same error every time.

Installing Sql Server 2012 Enterprise edition on Windows 7

Hello,
I have a desktop with 1 TB Hard Disk and 8GB RAM. It has Windows 7 installed. I want this to be used as staging server at my work. I installed the SQL Server 2012 Enterprise edition. While installing I used service accounts as default when prompted
which I normally do while installing on a desktop. But now I want this to be used as a server where people can access this box as they do on a sql server machine .i.e. connect to server using SSMS and get to databases on the server and also remote
desktop into this machine. So, Is it fine to install with default service accounts?
Also how can I connect to this newly installed sql server box from another desktop using SSMS?

This 3rd time I followed this link. But nothing new, same error.
Can you please tell me how to do follow, I cannt do the 1st step, how to change the local system to windows level account, vice-versa. It is shown mine as

To resolve it, follow these steps:-
When the installation throws this error, click on OK and allow it to proceed. It will fail for Database Engine, but the SQL Server service should have
been created. Check the Services console.
If the service is present, perform the following steps:-
1. Go to SQL Server Configuration manager, right click on the SQL Server service, and change the service account (if it is local system, give
it a windows level account, and vice-versa). It might throw a WMI error but you will see the account getting updated anyway. If not, then use the Services console. Change the account for SQL Agent as well.

2. Next, try to start the service. It should come online.
3. However, you will not be able to log in to the SQL Server
4. Now stop the service and start it from the command prompt using -m -c -T3608 parameters.
5. Now try logging in to the server using admin connection from sqlcmd (sqlcmd admin:<server name>\<instance name> ...)
6. Once logged in, use the sp_addsrvrolemember '<domain\username>','sysadmin'.
Also add the builtin/administrators to the sysadmin role
7. Now stop the service from the command prompt and start it from SQL Server configuration manager
You should be able to log in to the server now.

Installing SharePoint 2013 with SQL Server 2012 Developer Edition

Hi,
Can we use SQL Server 2012 Developer edition with SharePoint 2013? One thing that came to my mind was setting max degree of parallelism, is that supported in Developer edition? Looking forward to your assistance here.

Licensing SQL Server for Non-production Use
The SQL Server 2012 Developer Edition is a full-function version of the SQL Server software—with all the
features and capabilities of the Enterprise edition—licensed under the Developer Tools model, which is a “per
user” model. One license is required for each person that accesses or uses the software.
When using SQL Server software for development, test or demonstration purposes, only the users are licensed
and there is no need for a corresponding license for the actual server systems running SQL Server software in
this case.
As long as only licensed users have access to the software, customers can install as many copies of the software
on any number of servers that are used exclusively for development, test or demonstration purposes. This
is significant, because it allows customers to run the software on multiple devices (for testing purposes, for
example) without having to license each non-production server system.
But no, as you can see above, you'll have no issues with the software (Developer Edition is Enterprise Edition with licensing restrictions, but no functionality restrictions).

Sql server 2012 evaluation edition expired

Hi Gurus,
sql server 2012 evaluation edition expired,
Here i don't have any backups and when i browsed few blogs suggest to upgrade to another edition from Evaluation edition.
1)Do upgrading the edition keeps all the user databases the same and how about the logins and jobs and other data in system databases.
2) Am having a developer edition 2012 can i attach the data files ( .mdf ) to the instance using attach database method from Evaluation Edition Instance 2012 to Developer Edition 2012.
3)If i uninstall the Evaluation edition 2012 can i have any loss of data.
4)Please suggest me the best practice if any thing available.

Lets take your question point wise
1. In place upgrade will take care of all Logins,jobs and other objects. But before running inplace upgrade its advisable to run SQL Server upgrade advisor
2. Yes you can do it perfectly. As Erland said this will not transfer logins and you might have
orphaned users
3. Since Eval edition has expired and if you uninstall it you might loose all data. This is not a correct approach please either do an in place upgrade to licensed version( like developer edition) or first install developer edition and move database by backup
restore or attach detach method. I would say to use inplace upgrade.
4 Best practice would be to do an inplace upgrade. Since Developer edition is same as enterprise and Evaluation edition you dont need to worry about features. Just run the Developer edition setup by running setup.exe file and then select maintenance on window
which pops up in maintenance select edition upgrade and then follow the process to upgrade evaluation to developer edition. Below link would help
