Can wrong memory timing settings cause RAM damage?

Yesterday, I tried some more aggressive memory timings than I have previously been using. The system wouldn't even POST, so I obviously picked settings that were too aggressive.  However, it did power up, and it beeped -- continuously.
I used the JBAT jumper to reset the BIOS but it still wouldn't boot.
I even removed the battery for a few minutes, and that didn't help, either.
Finally, a friend suggested pulling the RAM and seeing what happened.  Sure enough, when I pulled the RAM stick from slot 2, the system booted just fine.
If I put it back, it won't POST and it beeps.
If I put it in slot 3, the system will POST but Windows won't start.
Did this stick of RAM get damaged, or is the problem with slots 2 and 3 on the motherboard?
(I did power the system off when I used the JBAT jumper.)

Gigabyte Radeon 9200 video card (I'm not into gaming)

Well, I'm totally screwed.
My new RAM arrived today.  I put it into Slot 1.  The computer wouldn't POST.  I moved the stick to Slot 3.  The computer turned on briefly, then I heard a pop, and it died.  The Power LED on the front remained on.
I think I fried the mobo.
Now I have a couple of important questions for you guys:
1. How can I make sure it's the mobo rather than some other component (I want to replace the right component)?
2. Since the K8N Neo Platinum is essentially unavailable, I thought I'd upgrade to a Socket 939 board and a faster CPU.  But if I swap in a Socket 939 board with nForce 4 chipset, will my PC boot, or will it be useless because the drivers on my system are for nForce 3?  Will I have to reinstall Windows to get the system working again?
3.  Any secret sources of K8N Neo Platinum mobos? That would make my life a lot easier.
Your expertise and advice is very sorely needed!!

  • MSI Neo4-F & Athlon64 3700+ E6 1T/2T Memory Timing missing in BIOS

Hi. This is my first post. I need help with my new MSI Neo4-F motherboard. The problem is that 1T/2T Memory Timing is not present in the latest BIOS v.1D. MSI website says that my CPU (San Diego 3700+ E6) is supported by the motherboard but there is no way to control the command rate of the memory thru the BIOS. So far I've been using A64 Tweaker to change command rate to 1T from Windows. Previously I used this CPU with the same memory Kingston KHX3200AK2/1G for another motherboard (MSI Diamond Plus) and I didn't have any problems being able to change the 1T/2T memory timing settings thru the BIOS. I  wrote couple of e-mails to MSI TEchnical support but i didn't get a response. Does anyone have any ideas that would help me resolve this issue? Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks a lot in advance!

its supposed to be there, i have a 3500+ and a 3800+ and its there, but why does it depend on the cpu if the 1t is there anyway,  ?, its there with the 1a 1b 1c and 1d, in dram configuration, second auto put it to manual and 1t, youre supposed to gain a 4% performance, which youre not going to see at all.
Sorry to disagree with your 4% figure but using the 1T setting on the A64s makes a huge difference.
I did a quick check on my current rig using 3dmark 03 and the difference in CPU score was 485 vice 554 making an improvement of over 12%!
I know it's not the best of tests to use for this, but it was quick and points to the "noticable" improvement I've found while doing OC benchmarking with a variety of programs.
Not trying to be argumentative, but I didn't want anybody reading this thread in the future to dismiss the "1T" option as being unimportant.

I am sorry but this isn't something that you can set. The system has timeouts built into the code.

It sounds like you are using Photo Booth and not the actual camera app. If you are using Photo Booth - tap the little icon in the lower left corner of the app to return to all of the different effects. Or quit Photo Booth and launch the camera app.
    To quit Photo Booth...
Tap the home button once. Then tap the home button twice and the recents tray will appear at the bottom of the screen. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the app that you want to close. Tap the home button twice.

My iPad screen is extremely damaged, I need to wipe iPad clean but can't see the screen. Can I control iPad settings through my pc/iTunes?

    You can try an alternative.
This is the quickest thing that came to mind, but if you want to wipe it with no care of the data on the device at all:
Place device in recovery mode (turn off device > hold home button + plug in to iTunes (WHILE HOLDING BUTTON)).
iTunes will give you an error saying it detected a device in recovery mode, you need to restore to use device. Restoring device is a factory reset. AKA a wipe of the device

  • Lower the RAM's Memory Timing to something Less Aggressive...? MSI KM2M Combo-L

(Not sure where would be the best place to post, so this question is posted here and in the BIOS Thread...  If possible, could the Moderators please leave BOTH as to assure a response...  I'd appreciate it...  Thank You..!!!)
    MSI KM2M Combo-L (601-6738-010)
I’m running into some application errors, and the main suggestion is to lower the RAM’s Memory Timing to something Less Aggressive...
The problem with that is I don’t see any option in the MSI KM2M Combo-L Phoenix 6g BIOS...
Basically, I’m trying to “Underclock”...   NOT “Overclock”...
    Any ideas...??
(I tried “searching” the forums, but I’m not finding anything, other than people asking “Why would you want to do that...??”   Those types of responses aren’t very useful...)

    Hi
The KM2M Combo L bios under Dram Clock/Drive Control allows some adjustment of the memory timings.  I suggest that you run it with the Dram Clock set by Spd (default).  If you still have errors, run memtest for a couple of hours to check your memory.

  • Memory Timing w/K7N2-DELTA-ILSR

How do i set the memory timing? I just bought some Corsair DDR400 memory. I have been readding about memory settings as in timing for them. How do I set them in the BIOS? Plus this memory is the TWINX1024-3200LLPT (low latency) memory and I was use it to its full potential. please help?

    MSI K7N2-DELTA
    CORSAIR TWINX1024-3200LLPT
    Visiontek Geforce 4 TI4600 128 DDR

    brink182,
You can leave the memory timings to Auto and the mobo will use the latency programed in the RAM's SPD.  Just make sure you have the CPU to RAM Ratio set to 1:1.

  • P965 Platinum memory latency settings problem

When I overclock the FSB of my P965 Platinum with C2D E6400, I get problems with the memory latecy settings. My memory is specified as 667MHz 5-5-5-15 2T, but when I enter these latencies in the bios, CPU-Z and Sandra both say I have 3-5-5-15 1T. Which is of course out of spec and gives system instability unless I raise the memory voltage quite a bit above spec.
So does anyone have an idea why this might be? Is it a bug of the bios (ver 1.3) or are CPU-Z and Sandra both mis-reporting the value? In the latter case, why can I get rid of the instability by raising ram voltage??
    Thanks for any help
    /Mattias
PS The disable speedspep switch in the bios dosn't seem to have any effect. The multiplier still switches down from 8 to 6 when the CPU is idle. Anyone elso who has the same problem?

The CAS Latency issue is known and it is possibly being addressed by MSI technicians. Please refer to this thread, CAS Latency is in the list of desired fixes for a new BIOS release. For the time being, switch memory timing to SPD instead of Manual in your BIOS and it should be set to CAS Latency 5...
Memory voltage: at certain settings memory chips require a certain amount of power. The default voltage for DDR2 is 1.9v, so in other words DDR2-667 5-5-5-15 is the best your memory chips can do at the default DDR2 voltage, that's why your memory is rated as it is. Raising the voltage enables you to run above rated speed, you simply let the memory chips use more power. There are limits of course...
Disable Speedstep: please refer to this thread, should help you disable Speedstep.

  • Possible memory timing problem

Hello, I hope you all can help me.  I have been wrestling with this problem for about two weeks and have not been able to fix it.
I recently upgraded my system by adding another gig of memory, setting up a raid array, and adding a X-fi Extreme Music card.  Before the upgrade my system ran smoothly for about 10 months.  After the upgrade it randomly freezes - the system locks up and won't take any more input from the mouse or keyboard.  The only way to recover is to hold the power button down for a few seconds.  After that it boots normally and runs perfectly until the next freeze.  The freeze can happen at any time, in any application, while the system is idle, or even during bootup.  I thought for a long time it was the sound card, but now I suspect my memory timings are off.  The problem is, I can't figure out how to adjust them in the BIOS.
    My system is this:
    CPU: AMD Athalon 64 3500+
    Motherboard: K8N Neo2 - Bios 1.B
Memory: 4 sticks of Corair Value Select PC 3200 DDR-400 - 512 meg each
    Video: ATI Radon X800 Pro
HD: 2X 74gig Raptors in a raid array (striping)
The only PCI card is the soundcard: Creative X-Fi Extreme Music
    Power: Antec Neo Power 480
    OS: Windows XP, SP2
I think that's everything, if I am missing something, please let me know.  I have run Microsoft's memory test utility overnight, and it has checked out.  The memory timing should be 3-3-3-8, but I can't figure out how to set that in the Bios.  Also, is there a change I should be making for going from two sticks to four?  I don't overclock or anything.
I have been trying to figure this out on my own, but I am coming up short.  Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance
    Claudius

Hi Claudius.  Welcome to the forum.  Here are a few tips that will make it easier for you to get help here.  Create a sig as described in the forum rules (hint-use profile button in sign-on screen) which will locate all the info about your system in a convenient place at the bottom of each post like I have.  It's the same info about your system that you posted in your first post, but having it there in each post makes everyone's life easier.  Also indicate whether you have AMD Venice 3500+ (which I think you have).
Timings terminology.  It gets confusing because memory specs are listed in different orders when people refer to them, in bios and in post screen.  First number should be cas latency (Tcl). Then Ras# to Cas# delay (Trcd). Then Row Precharge Time (Trp). Min Ras# Active time (Tras) is last number although post screen puts it next to last.
    Tcl-cas=3
    Trcd=3
    Trp=3
    Tras=8
That's what bios using serial prescence detect (SPD) should pick up under auto for your ram.  I doubt bios detected and used Tras 3 like you thought as it would not boot with Tras 3.
Get CPU-Z online for a great tool that gives you a lot of memory info.  It shows a lot of info about your chip too.  I suspect timings were detected properly or else your machine would not have booted and run.
After you added more identical memory (corsair value select) your machine apparently booted and ran with 2 gigs of ram, at least that is what appears from your post.  Microsoft's memory test said things are good.  (Don't know what that test is, and if you really want to test it you should use Memtest available online to make a bootable floppy and test memory for about 1 hour.)  However, it sounds like your memory is ok and you have some kind of sound card interrupt (IRQ conflict).  Did you disable on board sound in bios since you are using a sound card?  Try that if you can.  If you still get lockups with onboard sound disabled and sound card working, try removing sound card and seeing whether system still locks up.
    Good luck.
Edit-  In re-reading your post, it may be that system detected Tras 7 instead of Tras 8.  You can manually set tras 8 in the bios if you want to, but use CPU-Z first and check CPU-Z memory tab (to see what system is using) and CPU-Z SPD tab (to see what your ram is telling your system to use).  I think you will find both are 3,3,3,8.  If not, you can always change Tras to 8 in bios and leave everything else on auto.  However, you could also change dramm voltage for memory in bios to 2.7 volts without doing anything any harm and this could help memory if you are really having a memory (as opposed to IRQ conflict) problem.

  • AME CS4-Memory Pool settings?

I'm familiar with the memory settings in After Effects.  However, with my recent upgrade from 8GB to 16GB of memory, I was most excited to see an increase in AME speed.  So far, I have seen no change.  I found references to the "Adobe Memory Pool" in several places, but I haven't found a way to allocate more memory to AME.  I'm currently rendering a file in AME that I rendered back when I had 8GB of memory.  It's taking the exact same amount of time.  Memory usage during encode (with no other programs running) shown here:
Is there a way I can speed up AME rendering?  (An upgrade to CS6 is forthcoming.  But in the meantime . . . )

Adobe Media Encoder CS4 is a 32-bit application and is thus limited in the amount of RAM that it can use. Installing that additional RAM does no good for Adobe Media Encoder CS4.
Since you have AME CS6 coming, you'll be happy to know that the CS6 Adobe video applications are 64-bit applications and can make good use of all of your RAM. Plus, there are a lot of other performance improvements.

  • P55M-GD45 Memory BIOS Settings Help

    I5 750 (stock Cooler)
    Gskill DDR3 1600 F3-12800CL7D-4GBRH
    P55M-GD45 (latest BIOS)
I noticed after enabling XMP in the BIOS so the memory will run at 7-7-7-24 that the CPU frequency went from 133 to 160 I guess to get 1600 for the memory. I turned the Multiplier down to 17 to get 160X17=2.72ghz for the CPU. When it posted I noticed it said 160X17 2.72Ghz then a couple of lines down it said somethng like "OS SYSTEM 3.2Ghz".
I ran a few tests and found that with XMP enabled (CPU-Z) I was getting 3.8Ghz on a single core at 100% and 3.2Ghz whan all 4 cores were at 100%. I would get up to 80C and the VCore would hit 1.314.
With XMP turned off bois set to 133X20=2.66 CPU=Z says 133X21=2.72(four cores at 100% 63C and 1.232 Vcore) and 133X24=3.2(single core 100%)
Why does the system seem to ignore the multiplier with XMP enabled?
Can I change settings in the BIOS so the CPU runs closer to 2.66-2.8 with four cores at 100% and the memory timing at 7-7-7-24?

The I5 chip doesn't have the same memory multiplier as I7, so when you enable XMP for a 1600 profile the BIOS crank up the CPU multiplier to 160 and overclock the CPU heavily - that's the only way the BIOS can get the I5 to due the job!
There are several ways to get around this, and I have tried to get time to make a tutor about this. For now, just leave the multiplier at 17, or disable turbo mode and set it to 19 or 20, and you are on.
And - disable the OC in the BIOS, as it really can screw everything up.

  • P965 (7235) memory timing and CPU-Z 1.36...

There's a problem with memory timing (overclock).
    Motherboard: msi p965 neo-f(7235) with bios 1.5
    memory: kingmax mars ddr2 667 mhz 4gb (4 * 1 gbytes) base timing 5.5.5.15 at 333 mhz.
            and 4.4.4.12 at 266 mhz
    Processor: Intel E6600
    OS: winxp 32bits
If i set "dram timing" to "manual", the ddr memory frequency is adjustable.
In bios,i set the ddr memory frequency to 667 mhz for a "FSB:Dram" --> "4:5" (320 mhz cpu fsb frequency with 400 mhz ddr memory frequency)
Timing is set to 5.5.5.15 and overclock is 9*320 = 2880 mhz
    But cpu-z 1.36 says "dram timing 5.5.5.23"
If i change "dram timing" to "manual" (because i can change ddr memory frequency) and all timings to "auto", cpu-z 1.36 says "dram timing 5.5.5.15"
Ok i know, the memory is out the Specification.
But now timing is set to "4.4.4.12" and i change the ddr memory frequency to "533 mhz".
The "FSB:DRAM" is "1:1" (320 mhz cpu fsb frequency with 320 mhz ddr memory frequency).
    Then cpu-z 1.36 says "dram timing 4.4.4.20"
If i change "dram timing" to "manual" and all timings to "auto", cpu-z 1.36 says "dram timing 4.4.4.12"
    The question is:
why bios don't respect my choice when i set memory timing ?
Thank you... If you understand what i wrote...

So there is indeed an advantage gain. CPU-Z needs to do some updates on their software now.
Well, I personally will not try Corecenter myself as it has given too much problems since it's 1st launch.
Corecenter does the job well, but what i said it's just possible ameliorations for perfection

Well, overclocking limit is highly depending on the parts you get, there is no guarantee of reaching your wanted overclocking speed by any part unless special tests and validations have been done on the parts. But no RAM manufacturer has done that... So, it's all depending on your luck!
I know, for the overclocking capability.
My little overclock, is what i thought with this motherboard.  this is good for silence and consumption.
But it's just a problem with my memory and voltage more than 2.10 v. I'll do tests later, this is not important. But as i like to know the capability
finally if i have bought this motherboard, there were 4 raisons.
    first a good price.
    Three pci ports.
    A minimum overclocking.
And before all, a mainboard with very good stability.
This is my first msi motherboard
This simple mainboard p965 neo-f does not disappoint me
Thank you with the regulators to help to solve the problems.
And It is nevertheless the best place to speak about it

  • FF 3.6 AND 5 on same Mac, 1 profile - can I uninstall 5 without causing problems running 3.6 or with the profile?

I upgraded from 3.6.16 to 5, but don't like how 5 handles tabs (auto reloading 'problem loading' tabs when internet connection is reestablished). So I installed 3.6 in a separate folder, e.g. both versions are on this computer. I went back to using 3.6, and let it upgrade to either 3.6.18 or 19 (don't recall which & it's not open right now). I'm having problems with it using too much CPU & Memory, and not sure if that's a difference between 3.6.16 & 3.6.18/19, or if having 5 on the same computer even if closed could be causing the problem.
Can I uninstall 5 without causing problems with the 3.6 version and the single profile?

If you haven't tried this, give it a try. It worked for me, hopefully it will work for you. In your version 3 firefox, disable all extensions, I had two plugins (doubletwist and joost, disable those if you have them). Then install firefox 5 by overwriting your version 3 firefox. It should work fine after that. I tried everything before, I gave that a last ditch shot. Oh yeah, before you install firefox 5, clear your cache of everything just to be sure.
    Hopefully that helps.
