Can WRT300N be used as an access point?

My current network uses another company's wireless access point , but I'd like to go to an "N" speed on wireless. A store near me has the WRT300N Wireless-N broadband router on sale.  Can I use it as  an access point for my wireless computers or do I need something more specific like the WAP4400N access point.
thanks,
Chris

yes..you can certainly use the wrt300n as a wireless AP .. no problem

    The Guest Network function of the Time Capsule and AirPort Extreme cannot be enabled when the device is in Bridge Mode. Unfortunately, with another router...the Telus...upstream on your network, Bridge Mode is indicated as the correct setting for all other routers on the network.
    If you can replace the Telus gateway with a simple modem (that performs no routing functions), you should be able to configure either the Time Capsule or the AirPort Extreme....whichever is connected to the modem....to provide a Guest Network.

  • Using several UMTS access points (APN) for different services

    Hello,
    I wonder if it is possible to use several UMTS access points (APN) for different services.
    situation:
    1) The iPhone is used for business AND private purposes.
    2) The company's mobile telephone contract includes a APN, which is only usable by the employees' mobile phones.
    problem / question:
    Is it possible to define two access points in the iPhone, that for example the exchange account uses the company's APN, while all the other apps use the standard APN of the carrier?
    Problem is, that some iPhone's benefits like Push-Messages are blocked by the carrier's APN. Now, I have to switch the access point by installing the appropriate profile every time I want to check my e-mails or vice versa for using "normal" apps.
    I hope you can hep me.

    Thanks for your help! This really helps a lot! We actually only want to replace the autonmous access point with the controller solution and make one WLAN available at another site. From what I can see, this is possible with our current solution - we just need to switch from Layer 2 to Layer 3 and purchase the corresponding amount of supported Access Points (I think we should be able to get some refurbished ones).
    Am I correct in assuming that the Access Points we want to replace (AIR-AP1230B-E-K9 with 802.11b radio only) cannot be upgraded to lightweight ones? Since if I understood document http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/wireless/access_point/conversion/lwapp/upgrade/guide/lwapnote.html correctly, this is not possible with access points that only have 802.11b radios.
    Regarding the switch from Layer 2 to Layer 3: Do we really only need to perform the steps I described in my first post?
    And one last question regarding REAP. As far as I understood this is only needed when local traffic needs to be maintained in case the connection to the WLC becomes unavailable. So we really don't need it if we want to access resources that are only available over the WLC?
    Thanks again for your help!

  • N800 can no longer see any wireless access points....

    Not only can I not see my WLAN, but I can't see any of the many in the surrounding area. I had no problem getting and staying connected in the previous weeks, but for whatever reason, a scan of for WLANs returns zero as of yesterday. -chris

    The one thing that changed, is I switched my WLAN router over to a new 802.11N router. Used the same SSID, same WPA pre-shared key, etc. I have a feeling this had something to do with it, although my other systems connect just fine (PC, Mac, PSP, Tivo, etc).
    I've made some progress though. Even though I couldn't see any WLANs with a scan, I manually added my access point by entering the SSID and everything else. This time when I did a scan, my WLAN showed up, and all the others in the vicinity did too. I tried to connect to mine, and it failed, so I tried connecting to a neighbor's that was unsecured and voila...connected. Not ideal, but progress. So I then deleted my manually entered connection, disconnected then rescanned. The first scan was blank, but on the second, I saw all of the local WLANs, including mine. I tried connecting; entered the WPA pre-shared key again and bang...connected.
    My guesss is that my N800 got really confused when it saw the same SSID, but with a different MAC address. Just seemed odd that it wouldn't see the other WLANs in the area. This behavior even continued after a full reset and load of the OS. I wonder if there are some network config files that got corrupt with the changes I made. If so, perhaps there's a way to dump these settings manually?
    Thanks for you response. -chris

  • Using the WAP300N access point in combination with a WES610N Media Bridge

    Here is the situation:
    I live on a small farm and have an office separate from my main house.  My current router is a EA4500 and it is located in the office which is approximately 45 feet from the main house.  Current wireless signal strength at the interior wall closest to the office is nominally -55 to -50 dBm but drops off dramatically on the other side of the house.  I currently have a WES610N media bridge on the far side of the house that is supporting a DVR and TV.  The WES610N is receiving signal from the router but it is weak.  Wireless network site survey indicates only 4-6% reception whcih I'm assuming is somewhere around -80 dBm based on measurments I made using a WiFi analyzer app on my tablet.
    I had an RE1000 that bit the dust.  What I'd like to do is increase the wireless signal strength in the main house without running a wired connection from the office.  I'm considering purchasing a WAP300N Access Point which will also function as an range externder.  However, I am curious if there is any merit/efficeincy in also buying an additional WES610N Media Bridge an then connecting the WAP300N to the additional WES610N bridge and to allow the WAP300 N to serve as an acutual access point.
    Any thoughts on whether that would gain anything or would I be better suited by simply using the WAP300N as an extender??

    Your planned bridge - wap combo is better than using a range extender. Using an extender would expand the signal but it would cut the bandwidth into half. So, using the bridge-wap combo, it would expand the range without loosing bandwidth quality. It should be the same setup with an extender from where you'll place the combo at the edge of the wireless signal from your main network. But same rules about wireless signal and connectivity, it is prone to wireless interference.
    If your house is running on same circuit line, you can also consider using a powerline adapter. For information about powerline adapter, you can check this Article. It would eliminate deadspots better compared to the previous setup above. But this is just another option that you could take a look at.
    Hope this helps.

  • Can't connect my iphone to access point

    I have access point without internet connect. I can`t connected to this access point. used to be fine on version IOS 3.1

    Ok, so in had to do this to my iPad because it crashed. if you are okat restoring your phone, you need to put it into dfu mode.
    1 Hold both lock and home button until screen goes dark
    2 once I'd does, not immidietly but a little bit after (don't wait to long because it will restart) let go of the power button (still holding the home button)
    3 hold old that for about 10 secs. Your phone screen will be black
    4 plug into iTunes.  iTunes will detect it and say "iphone in recovery mode" just press restore and if you have a backup, use that
    When I first learned how to do this, it took me a few tries but it works really well and it is a nice thing to know how to do

  • Kin1m- Can't pull DHCP from any Access Point on 2 different phones

    I am hoping someone can help us.
    I have two kin1m phones, and have recently attempted to use the WIFI connectivity.  Browsing works fine via the data plan, however, I blocked the data plan (online), intending to only use WIFI on the phones but cannot get either of the two phones to work via WiFi.
    Have have tried two different access points, and everything from OPEN to WEP to WPA2 and both AES and TKIP.
    I get connected to the access point just fine, but the only address that is allocated is the DNS server.  The IP, subnet, gateway, etc. remain blank or all zeros for about 5 minutes, then it sets a default apipa address in the 169.254.x.x class B range.
    This is the same on both phones, so I have a tough time believing this is a defect.  Like I said, I have tried both a Linksys WAP4400N (Firmware Version: 1.2.14) and a TrendNet TEW-430APB
    Please advise, as my kids are going to DRIVE ME CRAZY over this!
    Thanks,
    Mr. Kidwhipped

    paulbarbee wrote:I tried manually running ¨/etc/rc.d/dhcp4 start¨ but that ...
    ... But that is a dhcp server, not a client.  In other words, you are trying to tell your computer to provide other computers on that public network with IP addresses.  Because you did not set your configuration file up to serve that subnet, the server choose to ignore it.  This is fortunate, because the owner of that network might not have appreciated that
    You want to run dhcpcd, which is a client.  You might also try dhclient, a client that sometimes is more forgiving.

  • How can I let applications let select Access Point...

    The access point management of the 5800 is somewhat different from older phones: using Web you can select the access point every time you start it, but other applications using network (e.g. Opera Mini) start connecting Wifi or 3G whatever comes first. Then you can only select that that access point is selected automatically at next use. This means when you are in another country and the signal of a Wifi hotspot is too weak it will select 3G and does not notify the user of it, which will cost lots of money then.
    Is there a possibility that I can select manually  the AP at every application start like Web does ?
    The older Nokias (e.g. E70) allowed to select the AP at every application start.
    Nokia 5800
    FW 30.0.011

    The new "Destinations" method of managing the internet reflects the fact that many users now connect via several networks. A typical setup for the "Internet" destination might be:
    Priority 1: Home WLAN
    Priority 2: Work WLAN
    Priority 3: Operator AP
    This way, the phone searches for the various APs in order of preferennce when you access the internet, allowing you to use different networks without switching the AP in settings.
    Individual applications may have their own AP settings which override the phone's standard setup - I can't speak for Opera Mini, but I can give N-Gage as an example of an application that ignores the phones main settings in favour of its own configuration.

  • Use N95 as access point and get laptop inet throug...

    Is it possible to use the N95 as an (WIFI) access point and use a laptop, a psp, an ipod touch to access the internet through 3G or even Turbo 3G?
    That would be really really cool!
    Regards
    Raptor

    I dont think it is as would have to be connected through a router to a phone line anyway. My psp doesn't even detect my N95. You would have to use it as a bluetooth modem and 3g.
    Its not who i am underneath. But what i do that defines me.

  • E4200 v2 - Using as an access point, will USB storage still work?

    If I were to take a e4200v2 and use it as an access point (disable DHCP), would the USB port connected to a Hard Drive still function as network storage?

    Yes, it will.  The only thing you need to do is make sure you still have a Static IP address on the E4200v2.
    Main Router ------> (Ethernet Port) E4200v2

  • Public ip address can't be used locally to access hosted websites

    I have snow leopard server and I have successfully set up the server to be accessible via a public static ip address. Im hosting some test websites, and cannot access those sites locally using the public ip address, only using the private ip address. However, externally, I can access the sites using the public ip address.
    In other words, while I'm at the office, I can only view the sites using the private ip address and not the public ip address. However, while I'm at home I can see the sites using the public ip address.
    Why can't I access the public ip address locally?
    I'm new to os x server ... New to any kind of server for that matter, so please keep explanations simple.
    I'm at a serviced office, and the router here is not mine and I have no control over it. Some IT company manages it for the site, and they weren't very helpful. The basically told me there's nothing they can do and blamed Mac os x server - since they could just wash their hands of the matter since they don't deal with macs.
    I was told by someone else, that this is common issue with some routers and that they could fix the issue on their end, but don't want to do it for what ever reason.
    I could simply access the sites using the private ip address, but I'd rather use the public one as this is currently causing issues with some of the software we're using.
    Any ideas how to resolve this?

    The IT company (shock, horror) apparently doesn't understand IP routing, or didn't understand what you were asking. This case has nothing to do with Mac OS X nor Mac OS X Server, and everything to do with the capabilities of the gateway box.
    I'm here going to refer to the firewall / gateway / router / DHCP server / box at the edge of your network as a gateway, because I really don't want to type all that stuff each time I describe this box. Your particular box might or might not be capable of all that.
    Why? Likely because your particular gateway device is not capable of detecting and reflecting the connections back toward the target server.
    IP routing. In small words.
    If an IP address is within a range of IP addresses designated by the subnet mask, the packet goes directly to the target host.
    If an IP address is not within that range, the packet is sent to the gateway.
    The gateway will then send the packet to the next router on the way to the target. With a typical low cost firewall gateway box, that next router is likely the ISP's routers. With a somewhat higher-end box and with a smarter router within the gateway, the packets can go to other IP routers.
    If the gateway is implemented for it, the gateway router's own address(es) will be recognized, and reflected back inwards. That means the address is public IP address on the way out, and is NAT'd when reflected, and sent back at the target host via whatever local processing rules or local port-forwarding rules might be defined and present within the gateway box.
    Now what usually happens here ([once you get the hang of setting up DNS services|http://labs.hoffmanlabs.com/node/1436]) is called split-horizon DNS, and that's where your public DNS domain is also mostly-duplicated as one of the domains on your LAN and thus reachable in your LAN domain, and your local DNS server in your Mac OS X Server is then configured to return a private IP address (and one within the range of addresses defined by your IP subnet mask), and which entirely bypasses your gateway and allows the packet to go directly to the target box. Put another way, with split-horizon DNS, you insinuate your LAN DNS server into the network and configure it to pass out (or spoof) IP name-to-address translations for your public DNS names, and pass out local (direct, LAN, private) IP addresses.
    The other option is to see if the IT company can switch the gateway box into what's usually called "bridged" mode, or swap in a box that acts as a bridge and not a router, and to install your own gateway behind it. Not all boxes permit that, but some do.

  • Why can't I use a double to point to a place in an array?

    Sorry if this is a stupid question, but whenever I compile code like this I get this error message:
    QuickTest.java:16: possible loss of precision
    found : double
    required: int
    System.out.println(s[t]);
    I would use an int, but My array that I want to use in other code is 1000 places big. What am I doing wrong?
    public class QuickTest{
         static String[] s = new String[200];
       public static void main (String[] args) {
       s[0] ="Why";
       s[1] ="do";
       s[2] ="you";
       s[3] ="own";
       s[4] ="ten";
       s[5] ="Red";
       s[6] ="white";
       s[7] ="and";
       s[8] ="blue";
       s[9] ="hats";
       double t = 2;
       System.out.println(s[t]);
    }

    I'm confused, I thought an int only went up to 255 (or something around that).Confused, indeed. You thought wrong.
    You only need 8 bits to represent an unsigned 0-255. An int is 32 bits. Better go get a good Java book and read up.

  • Setting Airport to use a Specific Access Point

    I am in Leopard connecting to a Pronto wireless provider her in Texas. My conections drops about every 20 seconds or so, making it a real pain. After doing some reading and using iStumbler and IPnetmonitor, I found that there where 3 AP in my area with almost the same signal strength. So I moved to the edge of town and was able to have only 1 AP in range and was able to connect with no more dropouts.
    The WDS (Wireless Distribution System) in use seems to be what produces the dropouts in leopard, As leopard rescans the waves and finds another AP with the same name and transmitting channel it gets confused on to which one to join making it drop the connections.
    So my question is, is there a way to tell leopard to stop all scanning and join AP with xx.xx.xx.xx MAC Address?
    As a side note, My wife has her PB with 10.4.11 and does not have this problems in exactly the same enviorment.

    @ Peter Lawrey
    I was thinking of changing the locale of what the JVM were using by some flag or something since the process might be affecting the weblogic server (to rule things out). AFAICT Ive configured WL to use some other stamp but since I still get, at startup, the "old" timestamp and then it gets changed to stamp format as I defined either with a -D flag or in the config. The docs says the format is set by the locale from the environment, but changing locale doesn't affect it. I do agree that the question might be better i asked in a Wl forum so I did.
    @ EJP
    That option is not an option in this case.
    Any moderator is free to delete this topic since I asked this in the WL forum instead.

  • WRT300N as Access Point?

    Hello,
    I own a Linksys rv082.
    It is a very good wired router/VPN server.
    Since a part of my network requires to be wireless, I have a cheap netgear access point.
    I've been looking at WRT300N and I like its features as well as its appearance.
    I have a question though.
    Can WRT300N be used as an access point and disable all the router capabilities as my Linksys rv082 will do routing job ?

    Hi... The connections that you made are correct. Now Login to WRT300N (you may need to diconnect you modem/router for some time). Set up the Wireless Settings as you preffer. Change the local IP address of the router to the range of your router, Disable the DHCP server on the WRT300N. You WRT300N will work as Access point.
