Can xhost be added to boot in Solaris

Xhost + is needed for the reports server to function. Up to now we have been manually running this command since our SA says it cannot be run automatically upon boot. This manual approach has caused problems when the server reboots at odd times and the root user is not available to run the xhost, leading to the reports server not working properly.
Is it possible to run the xhost + as part of the boot process? The environment is Solaris 8. -quinn

Adding a route in solaris

I added a route in solaris by command-->
route add 10.224.86.10 -netmask 255.255.255.224 10.224.8.10
it gave the prompt--add net 10.224.56.0: gateway 10.224.8.10
I checked the routing table by netstat -r
10.224.86.10 10.224.8.10 UG 1 0
which shows that it is added
but i am not able to ping it from that server
ping 10.224.86.10
gives
no answer from 10.224.86.10
What is the reason?

Hi
You cannot add a route in appliance. You can only setup a default gateway on the appliance.
All the routing decisions should be taken by default gateway of the appliance.

Created zone with defaults won't boot completely (Solaris 10, Update 1)

If I create a zone with defaults, i.e. allowing the zone to inherit the typical package dirs, the resulting zone does not boot completely. When I attach to the zone via zlogin, the zone looks to be in an administrative state. It never boots to a point where one would typically enter in the initial configuration info, e.g. timezone and root password.
However if I create the zone after first removing the inherited dirs, the zone boots to a state where it subsequently can be confiured and fully booted.
Looks as if the SMF facilities are not fully initialized when the zone is configured to inherit its packages. This could be a red herring as I'm a newbie who's moved over from Linux and starting to understand SMF specifically and Solaris in general.
I did not have this problem with Solaris 10. I've just installed Solaris 10 Update 1; the problem seems specific to that installation. I reinstalled and the problem persists.

I snipped the output because there were some errors, which on retrospect seems to have been a silly decision. I repeated the process and captured the missing output:

The file </zone/foo/root/var/sadm/system/logs/install_log> contains a log of the zone installation.The packages are related to App development and X11. I don't see any that might be related to SMF.

I took that as a typo, instead using "zoneadm?"

Help, unable to boot clean Solaris 10 install

I use Solaris at work, but have never done any sysadmin.
I have installed Solaris 10 on a new Intel Core2 Duo machine at home, but when I select Solaris 10 (not failsafe) from GRUB2, my machine reboots right after the "Use is subject to license terms", and goes back to GRUB2.
I can boot to the failsafe prompt, but I don't know how to troubleshoot from there.
What I've been able to find online suggests that I turn off ACPI (tried with no luck) and disable USB legacy mode in bios (again, tried with no luck). I'm using an IDE DVD drive to install, and a SATA drive for the OS, so everything is installed on c1d0, not c0d0.
When I run failsafe, it finds Solaris 10 ... X86 on c1d0s0 and I can attach as read/write, but I'm not sure what to do from there to find out why GRUB can't load the OS.
I've tried the Solaris 0606 Test Check CD, which says there are drivers for my complete system except for the audio (no driver) and the network (third party, I haven't bothered to get yet).
Please help, I'm totally stuck!

Sorry, I meant to say GRUB stage 2, not GRUB 2. I'm using the GRUB that came with solaris 0606. GRUB works fine.

Tried the halt_on_panic=1, had no effect. I'm really not sure what is causing the problem. I've found that if I boot 32 bit mode by editing the GRUB command to append kernel/unix I can boot into solaris. But I'd sure like to be able to boot into 64 bit mode.
Any more thoughts anyone?

I am interested in Setting up my pc with with a Dual boot of Solaris 8 and Windows 98. I have a 60 GB hard drive that I am going to make two 30 GB primary Partitions on this hard dive. One with Windows 98 and one with Solaris 8 Intel Platform version. The question that I have, Is this particular Setup doable? And if so can you tell me what order they have to be installed and what partition software I should use for this procedure. We mostly use Solaris 8 for testing which means I can't uninstall it. How would I be able to dual boot both Solaris 8 and 10 on a SUN SPARC machine? Is there a boot loader available like grub?

SPARC doesn't need a split boot loader like BIOS/x86. The OBP can directly load from any slice. So 'boot disk:a' would boot from slice 0 and 'boot disk:g' would boot from slice 6.

My problem is that using an Intel video card (with KMS) after latest Xorg 1.8 update, I can't see boot messagges and the login console anymore.
I've just noticed that after last Xorg update I can't access anymore to runlevel 3 on boot.
I've got an Intel video card so KMS is enabled by default (and mandatory).
I always used SLiM as a display manager, configured through /etc/inittab to go to runlevel 5 on boot:

To enable runlevel 3 at boot, I commented the id:5:initdefault: and the x:5:respawn:/usr/bin/slim >& /dev/null lines and uncommented id:3:initdefault:.
Now, during boot, the last thing I see is Loading UDev modules..., then the screen becomes dark gray and I can't see any other boot messages (actually this appened also before, after xorg update).
The problem is that before slim started but now I can't see any login console.
I also figured out that typing my username, password and then startx, starts X normally, so the problem is just that I can't see the tty console anymore.
Once I am in X I can switch to ttys normally.
What can I do?
I just wanted to get rid of slim and start X automatically after console login but I can't see the console login!

I would like to allow selected web sites to redirect me but block all others. Is this function available? If not can it be added to the next update or some time soon?
I presently use a site that refreshes automatically and I can also manually refresh. FF seems to block each refresh/redirect and the update does not show.

Outlook 2007 doesn't show the icloud service running in Windows 7 within outlook. Does anyone know what the dll for this service is so it can be manually added to outlook? I've installed the icloud control panel app and set it up to synch everything, but after initially downloading my icloud calendar, it won't process any calendar updates (new entries made on either iphone 4 on ios 5 or outlook).
So since the control panel installed, but the service doesn't show running in outlooks "trust center" add-ins list, anyone know the actual dll file it would point to so I can see if I can add it the hard way?

I had the same issue and figured it out. First you have to start Outook as administrator. To do this, shift and right-click on outlook and click run as administrator. Next you need to enable Hard-disabled add-ins:

Hard disabling can occur when an add-in causes the application to close unexpectedly. It might also occur on your development computer if you stop the debugger while the Startup event handler in your add-in is executing.
To re-enable an add-in
In the application, click the File tab.
Click the ApplicationName Options button.
In the categories pane, click Add-ins.
In the details pane, verify that the add-in appears in the Disabled Application Add-ins list. The Name column specifies the name of the assembly, and the Location column specifies the full path of the application manifest.
In the Manage box, click Disabled Items, and then click Go.
Select the add-in and click Enable.
Click Close.
Then you need to activate it.
To re-enable an add-in
In the application, click the File tab.

The option: you can add a video card to the PCIe x16 and use a card which has HDMI port. It only has 220W PSU therefore you have to update the PSU too.

Can I use Goal Zero Nomad 7 solar charger to charge I Phone5? When I hooked it up to the Goal Zero charger I got the normal "charging" chirp sound from the phone but when I checked on the charging progress about 30 minutes later the I Phone 5 had a warning message saying "Charging is not supported with this accessory" with a black exclamation mark in a yelllow triangle. Am I doing harm to my IPhone 5 to use the Goal Zero charger? The GZ website makes a big deal of how this charger can charge an IPhone5 and makes not mention of incompatibilty. But the replies on GZ's youtube video include numerous mentions of this problem. GZ responds that the user should contact [email protected] at GZ for help. I wrote that person just now. Let's see what they say.

The iPhone 5 requires 5 volts x 5 watts and 1 amp, the goal zero nomad 7 puts out only 2.5 watts x 5 volts and 0.5 amps.. This is where your problem lies, not enough juice for the iphone.
I would recommend the Suntactics sCharger-5 (the charger I have) which puts out 5 volts x 5 watts and 1 amp, which is exactly the same amount of juice the iphone requires.
