Can you add Programs to Open With Menu

Is there a way to add programs to the Open With Menu.  For example, when you right click on a file you can choose to open it with the default application by selecting Open, or choose other programs to open it with by selecting Open With.  Only a few of the programs that can open the files are listed.  Is there a way to add programs that I use to list in that list.  Right now, everytime I want to open something in a program that is not listed I have to go to Other... and find it in the Application folder.  Which is not too convenient.  Many programs that I use to open files are not listed for many types of file types, I open them frequently using the Open... window, and I was hoping that Mac would learn to add them, but it did not.
For example, I have VMWare with Windows 7 and Microsoft Office 2010 in it, my default application for WORD documents is Word for Mac 2011, but occasionally I need to open it in Word 2010 in Windows (Certain features that are missing in Mac Word), and I have to browse to fin the Word 2010 Application from the Application Folder.  Another example is a program (from the App Store) called ResizeIt (which resizes photos), I have to browse for it everytime even though it is an application just for images.
So, is there a way to edit the Open With Menu for specific file types to include these programs that I use, or do I have to keep browsing to the Application folder and finding it there?
Thank you in advance!!
David

  • Duplicate programs in "Open With" menu

How can I clean up the menu that shows when I right click and choose "Open With". I have duplicate programs (for example VLC shows twice). Any way to fix this?

Try rebuilding your launch services database.
    run the following terminal command
/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user

  • Can I add programs onto apple tv menu?

When i purchased my apple tv it comes pre-loaded with netflix, youtube, etc... How can i add another program like Amazon video?

You can't, you can only use features that are pre-installed.

  • Seeing Double! Double Programs on Open With Menu!

Ok, when I CTRL + CLick on a program and hit Open With... it has the same program listed twice! How do I Get rid of it?

I tried one of the suggested Terminal scripts and it worked perfectly! Some had reported the 'generic' icon problem, but that was always fixed with a reboot. I had no such problems and the duplicates were erased in both the 'control-click' area and the Get Info selections. Not even a log out required with the following Terminal commands, at least for me.
NOTE: Copy and paste the following into a text editor and remove the "REMOVE" before pasting into Terminal:
    /System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/REMOVE
    Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Versions/A/REMOVE
Support/lsregister -kill -r -f -domain local -domain system -domain user "/Applications"
Note that the command basically tells the System to stop updating the cache and rebuilt it. This takes a few seconds ( about 45 on my set up ). Just be patient and wait for the input cursor to reappear.
Thanks for the OSXHints link! Merry Christmas, just hope you can now "Open with fingers/hands" come the 25th!

  • How Can I Slim Down My "Open With" Menu?

    Hi!
Today, while using "Mail" I was wanted to save to iPhoto a photo my son emailed to me. So I right-clicked (AKA: Control+Click) on the photo and selected "Open With" from the contextual menu (AKA: Shortcut Menu) and selected "Import with iPhoto". This worked fine, but the problem I'm asking for help with is…there were multiple listings of every option available in the menu. I mean the list was HUGE! There are like 5 of everything. In case I'm not making myself clear there are 5 options all saying, "Import with iPhoto". And there are 5 of everything else in that menu. Is there a place I can go and edit this menu to show only one of each option?
    Thank you for replying!

AFAIK, only if you have multiple partitions with the OS installed and inadvertently launch applications from the non-booted ones. Additionally, I suspect that you have to rebuild the database after each update if the applications change versions—IIRC, it doesn't update automatically.

  • Can you set a second "Open with:" application for a file?

    Hi all,
I was wondering if something like this exists for OS X Lion or greater: you can set a default application to open a type of file, say Safari for all .html files, but can you set a second default application for a file?
I usually open files using command + o or command + down arrow from the Finder and I've often thought how good it would be to hit an alternate keyboard shortcut to open the selected file in a secondary default application.
For example, if I'm making a web page and have the .html selected in the finder I can hit command + o (or command + down arrow) to open it in Safari and if the file isn't open in my editor and is selected in the Finder I can hit, say command + option + o (or command + option + down arrow) to open the .html file in my editor.
Does anyone know if this can be achieved in OS X Lion or greater?
    Any advice is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

    Hi all,
If anyone's interested in a partial solution, I've rigged up the following.
I ended up using an Automator action coupled with Spark to capture a keyboard key combination. Spark: http://www.shadowlab.org/Software/spark
I've used Spark before with good results, and although it's from 2008 it still works on Lion.
I created an Automator action that does two things:
    gets the selected Finder items
opens finder items in the text editor I'm using.
I then saved the workflow as an application so that Spark could run it.
I've set up a keyboard shortcut that Spark picks up and calls my Automator workflow. It all seems to work nicely.
So, I've created a specific "open selected file with <text editor>" keyboard shortcut that should do for the time being.

  • Can you add programs after installation?

When you want to add more programs run the setup program from the DVD.

  • Can you add audio tracks as selectable menu items on a dvd? I shot a wedding where the church had its own set up to record audio. I'm trying to make those songs performed by the artists available for viewers of the dvd to select for listening.?

I'm trying to make audio (MP3) tracks available for viewers of this Wedding dvd to select for listening. Is this possible in iDVD?

You will need to create a slide show for each of those songs with a minimum of 1 photo per slideshow and add the song to the slideshow audio bin. Set the audio to Fit to Music.
In your top/main menu add a submenu for the list of songs.
Add a slideshow for each song with the "+" button at the bottom:
Select the link in the menu and rename it for the song used in the slideshow.  You can create a slide image for each song with the song name, composer, singer, etc. on the image to be used for the slideshow  An image editor or Pages can be used for that and then convert to a jpeg file for use in iDVD.
The song/playlist menu could look like this depending on the theme you choose:

  • Can you add Violin to song with Logic?

I have a song I want to add violin to it is their a way to do? Thanks

    Err,
don't you know how to establish an EXS24 plugin into a software instrument channelstrip?
Look at your software instrument channelstrip (left side of Logic window). You should see the fader, and above it some rectangles with an "I/O" above them. Select the first rectangle beneath the "I/O". Click *and hold* your left mouse button to open up the list of available software instruments. Select the EXS24 sampler.
In the plugin window which opens now, there's a silver region with some knobs. Just above "cutoff" theres a display field. Click into this display. Select factory -> pop strings -> violin. Or, if you have the Jam pack installed, factory -> orchestral -> strings -> violin.
Or look under "Garageband" for the default strings. It's the same as "pop strings".
If you don't want to use the EXS24, open one of the Garageband software instruments. They are basically the same as the EXS24 instruments but with another plugin window with less options to fiddle with.
And a strong request: As these are most basic things, so read the manual. Logic isn't Garageband and has a steep learning curve. You will need the manual to learn it.

  • Remove double items (programs) from Open With menu??

    Hello;
Since some disk perturbances and hooking up an external HD for backup there is one notorious issue in my Finder (Panther 10.3.9): All the applications are listed twice, overstuffing the right-click menu with double Safaris, double Previews and so on.
How do I get rid of this stuff? My Contextual Menu items' removal makes no difference (I have just two), as well as trashing the Finder preferences. Do I have any influence on how this list is being built?
I've searched Apple tech articles and this forum, to no avail. Somebody knows the solution? This is very annoying...
    PowerBook G4 Alu 1.25GHz   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Try these:
    1) Repair permissions using Disk Utility (Applications >> Utilities)
    2) Repair Disk (Bootup from OS X Install Disk 1)
    3) Clean System and User caches
    4) Optimize the System
    5) Update "whatis Mac OS X" database
Everything here except Repairing the Disk can be done with the freeware utility "OnyX" (www.titanium.free.fr). In OnyX, Tasks 1, 4, and 5 and be found in the "Maintenance" tab. Task 3 is found in the "Cleaning" tab. More in-depth info about these tasks can be found at my System Maintenance and General Troubleshooting guides:

  • Can you add a Purchase Order with Sales Order as its Base Type using DI-API

Is it possible to set the basetype on a PurchaseOrder document line to 17 to create a document as you would using the Procurement Confirmation Wizard in the UI?
    I am using 8.81 SP00 PL09.

    Anyone?
We already have code to automatically generate Sales Orders using the DI-API, and if we could automate the create of the Purchase Orders as well, it would save a lot of end-user time.
We would like to do it with the Base/Target references set so that end users can navigate between them in the UI.
You can do it with the Procurement Confirmation Wizard, and I would like to know if it is possible to replicate this functionality through the DI-API or if I should move forward by just creating the Purchase Orders without reference to the Sales Order and using a UDF to tie them together.

    Hello,
I am looking for some tools, suggestions, and thoughts on IT Strategic Planning.  I have never had to create a strategic plan before and I am now being asked to.  I am not quite sure where to start, or what software/tools to use to help.  How do you create your strategic plan, or do you not?  The main thing my bosses are looking for is where will we be in 5 years IT wise.  Now we all know that is hard to determine, but I want to give it my best shot.  Any thoughts, or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  • Add apps to Open With in context menu

is it possible for example to add Preview to "Open With.." menu when I right click on Folder? because it's anoying to choose Preview every time when I click Other to achieve that Preview will create thumbnails of all pictures in that folder

preview can't open folders. it opens files. in general, you can't add anything to "Open with menu" by hand. the only way to force something to be there is to make it the default application for certain file type. this should already be the case with image files unless you've changed the default application to something other than Preview. to set a default application control-click on an image file and select 'get info". in the resulting popup go to "open with section and set it to open with the app of your choice. then click "change all".
Lastly, to quickly open all files in a given folder in preview drop that folder on Preview in the dock.
when you press CMD + O in Preview and select folder, Preview will open all pictures from the folder with their thumbnails

  • Open With menu won't clean up with Terminal command

After upgrading to 10.6 last month I can't clean up my open with menu. I ran the following in Terminal and it did nothing to clean up the duplicates:
/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchS ervices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user
I used to run the following in Tiger and it never failed to clean up the duplicates:
/System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Frameworks/LaunchServic es.framework/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user
Must I delete “com.apple.LaunchServices” file located in Home/Library/Preferences
    OR
Remove launch services preference files, "com.apple.LaunchServices.plist" and "com.apple.LaunchServices.QuarantineEvents" in /username/Library/Preferences/ folder and then run the commands to clear and rebuild the launch services?

Thanks Andy. Running the following in Terminal cleaned up your problem with the Open With menus?
/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchSe rvices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user
In December cnet.com wrote about running that command: "It gave only temporary relief to people dealing with sluggish Save and Save as menus." Using Onyx to clear caches and reset launch services was suggested instead. In October and March cnet.com wrote about rebuilding launch services to stop Finder caused crashes in Snow Leopard by trashing the launchservices preference files from user/library and then running the following in Terminal (custom file associations will revert back to default):
/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchSe rvices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -seed -rfv -all user, system, local
When I was still running Tiger last year and had a Launch Services problem caused by crashes in the Finder due to misplaced folder aliases, BD Aqua in this forum linked me to The X Lab @
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/resetlaunchservices.html#Anchor-Reset-47857
where I learned all I needed to do to straighten things out was delete the following cache files from HD/Library/Caches:
    com.apple.LaunchServices-0140.csstore
    com.apple.LaunchServices-014nnn.csstore
The information about resetting Launch Services at the X Lab stops with Leopard. There are no cache files in Snow Leopard like those from Tiger above and their equivalents in Leopard.

  • Can't add Lightroom 4.4 to "open with" menu

Since the recent 4.4 update I can't add Lightroom 4.4 to the Windows 7 right click "open with" menu. When I try to add Lightroom.exe to the menu it simply doesn't get added.

It looks like the file association is broken for Lightroom because of which you are getting this issue.
There could be a Windows Registry tweak for this but Uninstall and Re-install Lightroom should be easy and safe fix.
