Can you appeal the Genius Bar's findings?

So, here's the story.  After years of using iOS devices, I made the jump.  In July 2012, I purchased my first MacBook Pro.  I opted for the 13" (obviously, non-Retina) model.  I love my Mac and am sold...I doubt I'll ever switch back to Windows.
Something came up last month.  The monitor on my MacBook has a ghost-like image in the form of a half circle (like a horseshoe) and a line extending horiztonally from the top right of the horseshoe.  When I first noticed it, it was only viewable against certain shades of black - but since I purchased the extended warranty, and the Mac was less than a year old, I figured why not get it checked out.  So, I did.
Well, as it turns out, the "cause" for my issue, according to the Geniuses at the Apple store, is setting something on top of my Mac.  Which, I'm completely sure could cause this issue.  However, my Mac sits OPEN on my desk 24x7.  I never close it EXCEPT to pack it up in a well protected laptop case (which I also bought from the Apple store) every Thursday night to take it to school.  The commute is 10 minutes, and it sits ON my passenger seat - and then once I arrive, it comes back out, and sits open during class.  Honestly, I use it TOO much to ever close it.  Period.
So, I completely disagree with his findings - I do not disagree that setting things on top of a Mac could cause this issue, but I know - FOR A FACT - that NOTHING has ever set on top of my Mac.
Is there any way I can challenge this decision?  Sadly, I did not ask for a Manager.  When I attempted to get a second opinion, my "genius" told me that he had three of his co-workers from the back look at the Mac and they all came to the same conclusion, which was a result of "extensive" training they've received.  Again, I don't doubt that pressure ON a Mac could cause this - I just KNOW in my case this has not ever happened.  So, now...I sit with a ghosted image on my Mac, and it's basically my word against Apple's.  They're refusing to honor my warranty and I'm a little livid.
Any help?

Thanks - that's obviously the next logical step.  What I'm worried about is that this is going to be a "he said/she said" case, and of course, Apple will side with the findings of it's employees.  Doesn't mean I can't try, though...
I'm curious about taking it for a physical second opinion, say at another Apple store, but the tech recorded some items about my encounter in an iPad app.  Does anyone know if this information is stored company wide, or if it's proprietary to just that location?  I'd love to get someone - completely unrelated to this entire ordeal - to take a look at this and tell me honestly what they think.
What's unique about this situation is that my ghosted image is actually getting worse.  At first, you could only notice it very dimly lit rooms against certain shades of black.  Now, it's visible all of the time, anytime you use any dark background.

  • Can you shorten the google bar at the top so it doesn't always cover up the personas?

This is a minor problem, but most of the personas have a graphic in the right corner and the google search bar always covers it up. Can you shorten the bar? I know this sounds inconsequential, but it seems to always cover the right side where the graphic is.
    Thanks~

You can add Space elements at the right of the search bar in the "View > Toolbars > Customize" window to make the search bar move to the left.

  • Can you disable the status bar on a web browser from an applet?

I have a signed applet and am using plugin 1.3.1_02 with IE 5.5. I use the showStatus("text") method to display pertinent information to the user in the browser's status bar.
Currently I see all types of messages being displayed (in IE's status bar) as my applet communicates with the server. I would like to restrict what is shown in the status bar to show my system messages only.
Can I filter what is displayed or disable status bar functionality programmatically from the applet? Or possibly with a browser/plugin setting?
    Thanks

    Hi,
I think you can do that with Java to JavaScript communication.

  • Can you lock the menu bar?

    Hi all,
I am using iWeb to create a website and so far am really pleased with what it can do.
However i would like to be able to lock the menu bar so that it always stays at the top of the screen and the rest of the page scrolls up underneath it, or alongside it if i put the menu bar on the left. The idea is that no matter where the reader is on the page they will always have access to the menu buttons. I remember doing this on another program back in the bad old windows days, i think it might have been locking panes or similar.
Can this be done in iWeb?
Thanks in advance for your help.
    Mike

Here's a locked menu in action.
    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3563737/Lycos/Fixed.html
It's an Ad-Hoc solution, because I had the take the shaded bar at the top into account. Will fixed that later.
The bar at the top of this page and the other pages is a solution to have the bar stretch the width of the page when you resize the browser window.
It cannot be done in iWeb itself. You need a JavaScript.
So you get two solutions for the price of one.
    Here's the JavaScript :
Apparently Discussions does not accept all the JavaScript code.
So have a look at the source here :

Note that you can publish iWeb at DropBox.

  • Drive makes noise at home, not at the genius bar!

Hello, I am sure that all of you have had this happen to you. Your mac has a problem, so you bring it to the apple store.. However, once your are there, the problem stops! Yet when you get back home, it starts up again!
I have full Apple Care, so everything SHOULD be free for me... Here is my story:
My macbook's cd drive makes a loud buzz whenever it spins fast.. The computer is smart enuff to spin it down to a low speed, yet this is not good. CD rips stay at about 3x.. and booting from a cd is terrible! I went to the apple store, waited 40 miutes to speek with a genius, and when we put in a cd, it was whisper quiet and worked well.... He told me that it was fine, so I left. Well, its doing it again... Should I go to the apple store and demand that they replace it? Will they do this?
    -Jordan

    Some ideas:
Did you bring the same CDs that make noise with you to the Genius Bar, or did Apple Supply the CD?
Is it possible that the Genius Bar was too noisy for them to hear the noise?
Did you do exactly the same activity that causes the buzz at home at the Bar?
Does you MacBook have to be hot (or cold) for the noise to happen. Perhaps it needed more time to get acclimated at the Bar?
Does your MacBook have to be plugged into wall power (or running on battery) for the noise to happen? Did they plug it in the same way at the Bar? Did they use your power adapter, or theirs?

  • Can the Genius Bar cable to my iPhone 5S to enter my passcode on a broken, non-responsive touch screen?  I need to back up the 5S before replacing it under AppleCare

Can the Genius Bar cable my 5S to their computer or separate keyboard to enter my passcode on a broken, non-responsive touchscreen?  I need to get past the passcode to either transfer my data and pics to a new 5S or my PC computer (that the 5S has never been synced with.

  • Can I get my Macbook Pro just checked out and tuned up at the genius bar?

I'm having a hard time getting my questions answered. Basically I've had my Macbook Pro for four and a half years, but it's still doing mostly fine. It's just showing it's age slightly I think, with more spinning wheels than usual and odd things like the date is usually set to 1999 when I turn the computer on, but it rights itself in a few minutes. Also most the time when I plug it in it says it's not charging and I have to try multiple times. None of this is a huge deal, it's just that I really need the computer to last me preferably at least another year, so I worry about it a bit. I do take good care of it though. I'm about to move out of the country for a year, so I'd like to get it just checked out and perhaps tuned up a bit so that any problems are taken care of and it's in the best shape before I move away. I'd like to make a genius bar appointment, but the closest Apple store is a two hour drive from my home, so I don't want to go into it not having any idea how much it will cost or if they'll even be able to do what I'm hoping in the span of a single workday. I really don't want to have to drive back later to pick it up or have it sent off somewhere to be repaired, although if it does have serious problems I'd be willing to do that. I'd just like to know going in to it what the price range is likely to be like. I don't want to make the drive to the Apple store and have them tell me it's going to be a few hundred dollars just to have my computer looked over. And I don't even know if they offer that service, let alone if they can do it in a single afternoon. I've tried calling the store and conversations with the automated person really are not helpful. He just tells me to go online and make a reservation, and I can't figure out how to get my questions about cost and service answered.
Also, am I being foolish hoping my four and a half year old Macbook will last at least another year or two? I have no idea what the "life expectancy" is for these things. I know nothing really about computers at all, so forgive my ignorance.
Any help and insight is very much appreciated.

The genius bar technicians can check your MBP for possible hardware problems and specific software issues that you may have.  The diagnosis will be free.  Any extensive repairs will not be free.
If you have minor software problems, you essentially will have to deal with them yourself.  Examine these two comprehensive documents for possible problem definition and solutions.  If you encounter problems that you are unable to cope with, start a new discussion and there will be persons willing to assist you in solving them.

I can not sync my iPhone after restoring it - my computer only gives me the restore (again and again and again) option.  I have no music and only a few aps now on my iPhone.  Any tips before I go to the genius bar?

If you restored as new, without using a backup, and still only get an option to restore, there is a hardware problem or the phone was previously hacked (jailbroken, downgraded iOS, unauthorized unlock).  Your only option is to take it to Apple or whoever provides iPhone service in your country.

  • Can i retreive my pictures from my hard drive if the genius bar says it's b

Can someone please help me with this I am really bummed. my pictures and videos of my now late dog and my past 6 years are on my Powerbook G4 and the genius bar says the hard drive is broken. The weird thing was it was working fine and then I went to turn i on and it just didn't turn on. there was no crash while I was using it. Can someone recommend a service to retrieve the information or any advice on how to do it myself.

    sean:
Commercial data recovery services are very expensive and unless your data is extremely valuable to you, it may not make sense economically. If you would like to pursue that avenue you can do a Google search for data recovery or something like that and you will come up with some of them. There are a number of utilities that will recover data from sometimes seemingly dead HDDs. Here are three of them:
    FileSalvage
    DataRescue II
    Virtual Lab
All three of these offer demo versions, which you can download and see if they find the files for which you are looking. If one of them seems to locate them, you can purchase it online and download it, or buy the software on CD and proceed to rescue your data. Dr. Smoke's FAQ Data Recovery offers helpful advice on how to do this.
Please do post back with further questions or comments.
    Good luck

Unfortunately, that drive is long gone, probably back to the mfr. Drives are not returned when they are exchanged. You can go by and ask them, but the chances are slim to none.

Hi, Michelle. Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
Have you tried resetting the SMC? The SMC (System Management Controller) has control over the charging function, so resetting it may help.

Yes, if you purchased it in an Apple store, they should be able to assist you.  Bring your MBP with you as well as the Drive.

You'll have to either call AppleCare...they'll have a record, or go back to the Genius bar where your phone was replaced.
