I assume that you are asking about Time Machine backups
If you have an external drive connected to your Mac using either the USB or FireWire connector.....
Open System Preferences on your Mac
Open Time Machine
Click the Options button
A list of files and devices that are Excluded from Time Machine backups will be displayed
Click on the name of the hard drive
Click the - (minus) button at the bottom of the list to remove the drive from the Excluded list and it will now be backed up by Time Machine along with your Mac
If the hard drive is greyed out in the Exclusions list, it is not formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and cannot be backed up using Time Machine

  • Can I move my USB external to the Time Capsule USB port and still see my backup?

After much difficulty getting Time Machine backups to work on my new 13" MBPro, after updating to 10.7.2, I've finally prevailed with help of the great Pondini. (You are a great humanitarian sir!)
Of course I'd now like to put that new 3 TB seagate goflex onto the Time Capsule, share it with the wired in iMac, and WiFi around the house with the MBPro.
But now I'm afraid to connect it to the Time Capsule's USB, lest my backup be spotlitin' everybody's permissions from years ago and telling my Lion not to start, or stop, or go.
Truth is- after 3 days of sorting it out (in the end not really knowing how I did), I'm telling people to wait for 10.7.x to update
    (x = "when I tell you it's cool").
This is the first time in a while that I've been skittish about "recovering" from an update. 10.7.2 is a huge change that I wasn't ready for.
If I plug this drive into the TC and Time Machine goes crazy again I'll probably throw it out the window.
So has anyone made a TM backup with a big USB drive connnected to the MBPro port, and then moved said drive to the Time Capsule's USB port? And then still be able to access the backup through Time Machine?
    Hmmmmm?

I wanted to plug the wifi on the time capsule and send the wifi signal only from the time capsule and have it fully operating.
    Is it possible?
Not without ethernet connection to the 4G router.. you cannot use the 4G say into the USB of the TC.. there are no drivers for that. And you cannot do any other type of connection.. except ethernet.. so not with your current equipment..
Scrap the current 4g router and buy something with ethernet, that either takes the 4g modem or the sim having a built in modem.

  • Duplicate backups of external disk to Time Capsule

I am backing up to a Time Capsule. Backup of the internal disk (Machintosh HD) is working fine. I also have an external firewire disk (Media) with my itunes library on it - when I connected in the external disk, it got backed up by Time Machine too.
So all seemed well, until tonight. The problem is that I don't always connect the firewire disk - so for a couple of nights, Time Machine was backing up the internal disk only. Tonight when I did connect the external disk, Time Machine backed up the entire disk, from scratch again!
It looks like Time Machine can't handle looking back through previous backups in a disk orientated way...it misses that 'Media' was last backed up 3 backups ago, so starts from scratch.

Of course. Your Time Capsule won't use the external drive to store backups (they will be stored in the Time Capsule's hard disk), so you can use the external drive to store other data.
After plugging the external drive onto the Time Capsule, open a Finder window and you will see the external drive in the sidebar, under "Shared"

  • Time machine backup from external hdd to time capsule

Is it possible to transfer an time machine backup from an external hdd to a time capsule? I have changed the original 2tb time capsule hdd to a 3tb hdd because of loud sounds from the 2tb hdd. Now i want to transfer the backup from the (now external) 2tb hdd to the new 3tb hdd which is now in the time capsule. Could anybody help me?

Yes, it should be easy.. just copy the sparsebundle from the old 2TB plugged into your computer to the TC.
This will take a few hours maybe a lot more if the drive is near full.. use ethernet.. do not even dream of using wireless.. Do not plug the 2TB into the TC USB.. that is super slow.. plugged into your computer with a FW hard disk holder would be the ideal.. but USB is ok.
    http://pondini.org/TM/18.html
    Is it worth it??
Saving old backups.. or simply start again.. a clean fresh backup is much more efficient. Put the 2TB drive in a draw.. if you haven't needed any files on it in 6months from now.. wipe it.

  • Can you watch videos/listen to music from Tim Capsule through appletv?

Would like to use Time Capsule to save movies and play them back through my appletv.  Can anyone let me know if this is possible?  Thanks.

On a standard ATV no, you cannot easily do it because of the link to itunes.. that means itunes has to have its main library on the TC and that is playing with fire.. The TC has no backup and no ability to stream.. it has no media servers. If you have a JB ATV (so not the newest one) and it can find and play files, yes, it would be possible. But again, as a storage location, you need to understand a failed TC is a locked up device.. where Apple will not recover your files, and so you will need to do manual backups to another drive anyway.

  • I need some tips on transfering my LARGE itunes account from a pc external hardrive to time capsule for my new Macbook Air

I just purchased a Macbook Air that is being shipped as I type, What I am trying to do is swap all the info on my external hard drive that was used for my old pc ( includes pictures, music and very Large iTunes account ) to a 2Tb time capsule that I purchased to use to store all my info for the new Macbook Air that is coming, without downloading it to the Macbook Air first. Im not sure if its even possible to do but any help is greatly appreciated. This is my first Mac and I just want to make this transfer smooth and fast. Also looking to make all future purchases from iTunes go directly to time capsule.

i think you will need to use a computer somewhere in the process
you could try putting Mac OS on the hard drive with the files on, and then booting from the hard drive

  • External hardrive with Time capsule

    hi,
I recently purchaced a 3 T Time capsule allong with a Seagate wireless plus. The Seagate HD allows me to keep movies etc on it and make them portable to use with my ipads, iphones etc and not eat up all the space on my devieces.
Heres the questions. Can I hook the Segate HD to time capsule. i.e.is there a way to get TC to back up what is on the EHD via time machine?
For instance, if I want to store 5 years worh of picture on the EHD, and delete them form my macbook pro in order to free up space, how could I back up those pictures to Time machine?
    Any help would be apreciated.

Can I hook the Segate HD to time capsule
Yes, if the Seagate is formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled). It is probably not unless you did this previously.
there a way to get TC to back up what is on the EHD via time machine?
Yes, but the drive must be formatted as above.....AND....the drive must be connected directly to your Mac.....not to the Time Capsule.
if I want to store 5 years worh of picture on the EHD, and delete them form my macbook pro in order to free up space, how could I back up those pictures to Time machine?
See previous response. I assume that you will be transferring the images from your Mac to the Seagate drive here.

  • Can you extend a wireless connection from one time capsule to another wirelessly?

We have two time capsules, one is connected to our modem and is transmitting a wireless network. It is in a really out of the way location, and we would like to set up a network printer in a different location on that network, so we got another time capsule (to hook up to the printer at a different location). Could we possibly extend the wireless network to the second time capsule with the printer attached so we could use the printer as a network printer? (If yes, HOW?)

Could we possibly extend the wireless network to the second time capsule
Yes, if the second Time Capsule is located where it can receive a good wireless signal from the other Time Capsule.
To test, move a laptop to the proposed location of the second Time Capsule. Log on using wireless on the laptop and spend some time to make sure that you have a good, solid reliable Internet connection. If you do, then the Time Capsule should work well at that location.
You would use AirPort Utility to configure the second Time Capsule to "Extend a wireless network".  If you open AirPort Utility now as a test, can you "see" both Time Capsules there?
The reason that we ask is that you might need to check some settings on the "main" Time Capsule to be able to configure the second Time Capsule correctly.
with the printer attached so we could use the printer as a network printer?
If the same printer works on your Time Capsule now, then it should work on the second Time Capsule. If it is working now, you may not even need to re-install it again when it is connected to the second Time Capsule.
This is one of those times when you will not know if something will work until you actually try.

  • Can you SEPARATELY backup multiple hard drives with Time Machine?

I have an IMAC (let's call it HD A) and an external HD (Let's say HD B) with all my photos on. I would like to use time machine to back HD A on another external HD (HD C) and HD B (the one with the photos) on another HD called HD D. Is that possible?

Thank you. I want to do that because the backup of HD A + HD B is larger than each one of HD C and HD D. So I wanted to split the backup. But I guess it is not possible (see below). Switching config each time takes too much time and is prone to errors so I won't do that. Maybe there is some software that can do that.

  • How can I take backup in External HardDrive and then reinstall new OS and then restore data from External Hard Drive

I have goot some issue with my Macbook i7, I am not able to start my Macboook its keep showing the Grey screen after login.
I have done something where I have successully taken the OS backup on External Hardrive which was saying computer will start automatically. After this I founded a Fresh new computer but may be that was running on External hard drive.
I am **** confuse what should I do next?
    Anyhelp wold be great......

Delete the user account, then use the "Erase Free Space" option in the Erase tab of Disk Utility to write zeroes to the drive. Stick with the "Fastest" method (one pass of zeroes) unless you're hiding secrets from the NSA - anything more stringent is a waste of time.

  • Can I use a 2tb external drive with Time Machine to backup my Mac Mini (256gbSSD + 2tbHDD)?

Can I use a 2tb external drive with Time Machine to backup what I have on my Mac Mini?
My Mac Mini has one 256 SSD and one 2tb HDD. I want to use Time Machine to do a backup of everything.
Would an external 2tb My Passport Drive by Western Digital work for the backup?
It seems like it would not work because the total storage on the Mac Mini is 2304 gigabytes (SSD + HDD).
And the external Western Digital drive is only 2048 in gigabytes versus 2304 gigabytes the Mac Mini has.

No. A Time Machine backup drive should have at least twice the capacity of the drive it backs up. You would need at least a 4 TB backup drive for Time Machine.
Might I suggest as an alternative that you not use Time Machine but a third-party backup utility that simply overwrites older files with new ones such that the backup drive can be the same capacity as the drive backed up.

  • Is there any way I can switch Automatic Backup off?

Is there any way I can turn automatic backups off in Logic Pro 8? Apple has set it so you can't switch them off any more. (You could switch them off in Logic versions 6 and 7.)
I see other people have had this problem and it has been discussed on these forums but nobody seems to have offered a crystal clear solution.
I know somebody suggested you change the number below:
    <key>MaxBackupsToKeep</key>
    <integer>10</integer>"
    And someone else wrote:
    From the command prompt type:
    defaults write com.apple.logic.pro MaxBackupsToKeep 0
But I can't see exactly how or where to do this. I opened com.apple.logic.pro.plist and found "MaxBackupsToKeep" used in a different context to what is described above. I changed a '1' after this text to '0' but that had no effect whatsoever.
Can somebody please help? How exactly do you switch this annoying backup feature off?

    defaults write com.apple.logic.pro MaxBackupsToKeep 0
But I can't see exactly how or where to do this.
Open the Terminal application. Type the command above and press return.
Note that setting it to 0 *does not* turn it off, it gives you one autobackup next to the song file, rather than creating an auto backup folder and putting the backups in there.

    About the ACCESS_METHOD parameter
-It's undocumented data pump parameter and it's should be used only when requested by Oracle Support
-It's purpose is to specify the loading/unloading method, not filtering object types during the export or import
-If this parameter is not specified, the Data Pump will automatically choose the best method to load or unload the data...
    so,
    the External Tables method
-Is used by the data pump if data cannot be moved in the default method to load/unload data ,
and that is direct path mode, or if there is a situation where parallel SQL can be used to speed up the data move even more

  • Can you automatically start programs when you switch on your imac

can you automatically start programs when you switch on your imac

Yes, go to: Apple / System Preferences / User Groups / Login Items and add the Application to the list of things automatically set to start at login.
However, you should limit it to those that you need or use, because adding a lot will needlessly slow down your startup time and use more RAM.
