Can you back up text messages?

Is it possble to save text strings of messages?
If so, how?

you can back up your phone to either itunes or icloud http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766
if you want to save it to your computer you would need to use a 3rd party software.

I was told by someone that I could back up texting conversations to iCloud.  Is that true?  If so, how is that done?
    Thank you.

Messages (iMessage, SMS and MMS) are included in iCloud backup.

Not from the phone itself. Contact your carrier. In the U.S., all the major carriers offer some type of blocking for calls and text.

Text messages are included with your iPhone's backup, which is updated by iTunes as the first step during the iTunes sync process. There are utilities such as this one that provide for extracting this and other data from your iPhone's backup for access on your computer for reading, printing, archiving, etc.

Have you tried restarting or resetting your iPhone?
Restart: Press On/Off button until the Slide to Power Off slider appears, select Slide to Power Off and, after It shuts down, press the On/Off button until the Apple logo appears.
Reset: Press the Home and On/Off buttons at the same time and hold them until the Apple logo appears (about 10 seconds).
Also consider deleting and reinstalling the Mail Account in question.

  • HT201269 can you retrieve old text message ?

I'm needing to get text messages that i sent from a year ago. Can you retrieve text messages?

I think you can retrieve old messages.  I have done it to the extent of a couple months on my iPhone looking up some info I needed.  What I did was kept scrolling back to "load earlier messages" and they kept coming till I got to the info I wanted.  They are always telling you this stuff lives forever, at least in court supeonas.
I have wondered if I could go back through the iMessages using my lap top.  As a parent of young adults, their messages to me through the last several years are such a travelogue of their lives, I wouldn't mind reading it again.  Probably someone in criminal justice would know how to do it better.

Is there a way to recover deleted text messages

(I know this is a somewhat old thread, but someone may stumble on it if they're in a similar situation!)
It really all depends, unfortunately. When the messages are deleted, the database storing them marks it as "deleted" but doesn't actually destroy the information fully. Eventually the database will recompact the space, rearrange, and reuse, but until then the message could be found.
With that said, from my own experience, sometimes the much older messages are the ones that happen to stick around, and the newer ones get overwritten first. It all just depends on how the space in the file gets compacted and reused I'd say it's worth a try to look.
I am the main developer for Decipher TextMessage, which has a feature to recover deleted text messages from the iPhone backup files. The nice thing is that the software will scan for your iTunes backups of your phones (perhaps finding the message in an older backup before it was deleted!), show you all of the regular not-deleted messages, and then you can press the recover button to look for deleted information. I usually recommend running the program once to see what older information you have (always better to get the original not-deleted version when possible) and then make a new backup and run Decipher TextMessage again.
I hope this helps someone out! If you want to send us some more questions directly, you can do so from our website http://deciphertools.com
(Disclaimer: Clearly since I work for Decipher Media, the links I have made above to deciphertools.com may benefit me in the future.)

  • How can you recover old text message on the iPhone 4S?

  • Can you import old text messages from a backup?

Prior to updating to iOS 8, I did a full backup to iCloud and iTunes.  I decided to start from scratch though.  I think the only thing I'm a little upset to lose is all my text messages.  Is there any way to import them from an old backup?

Restoring from a backup is an all or nothing thing. There isn't a way to restore just text messages that I'm aware of.

  • Customer Support: Can you identify this text message?

    Hi,
Can someone from Verizon tell me why I got the following text and what it means:
    "//VZWVVM:SYNC:ev=NM;id=1;c=1;t=v;s=My Home Phone Number Here;dt=18/11/2014 14:53 -0500;l=9;dev_t=5"
I have had 3 such undecipherable messages in the past few days (all a little different). They appear to be coming from Verizon.
    Thanks

Yesterday afternoon I called my cell phone from a land line phone to leave a message to test the voice mail feature of the cell phone. The text I received, posted above, is a result of that voice message. It came in right after I left the voice message. I did not get an indication on my cell phone of that voice mail until this morning when I turned the phone on.
It is still not clear to me why I got the text, or why it took so long for my cell phone to indicate that I had a voice message.

  • Can you delete one test message at a time?

    Hey italiangirl2009,
No. You can clear the entire conversation or delete the conversation.

For Messsging an iPod touch or iPad you use the E-mail address they have in Settings>Messages>Send and Receive.  An Phone number will also be listed if they also have an iPhone with iOS 6 using the same Apple ID and yo can use the number.
You can Message an iPhone by its phone number of the Apple ID email address listed in Settings>Messages>Send and Receive.

  • Where can I find/view backed up Text Messages on MAC?

    Hello.
I have installed the Blackberry Desktop Manager for my MAC.
I have the Blackberry Tour.  I SYNCED and BACKED UP my BB.
The Synced worked great - contacts and calendar- I found everything.
But I am trying to find where my saved backed up text messages went.  When I backed it up, I had it selected ALL and I saw that there were messages in the list.
I found the .bbb file in USERS/DOCUMENTS/BB Backups
But I do not know if I am supposed to do anything with this file.
So, I guess I just want to know where are all of my text messages/memos/etc backed up to?
    Thanks!!
    -Jennifer

So I can't view my text messages that are backed up to my MAC?
The BB Desktop Manager claims that I can and it is on the list to choose from when selecting what I want synced (I chose everything).

Well... there you go. You cannot on the PC, maybe the MAC is different.
I didn't know that. Backup files are backup files... for restoration to the device in an emergency loss of device data.
So what does your DM claim.. in words?

  • My phone was stolen - can I get my text messages back?

my phone was stolen - can I get my text messages back?

Not unless you backed up the phone before it was stolen.

  • How can I download my text messages?

I want to be able to save a backup copy of my texts and have access to them.   I can't see how to do that.  Please advise

If you have an Android SMS Backup + - Android Apps on Google Play is a great option, it backs your text messages, pictures and videos all to gmail with a label so they are nicely tucked away unless you want to look at them.
