Can you boot a Mac Pro using a USB Pen Drive?

Hello.
Can you boot a Mac Pro using a USB Pen Drive? OS=Windows or Linux or BSD or MacOS... I know it is bios specific on a PC if the option is available. If this is possible, does anyone have a link to instructions?
Thanks,
Scott

Not to get in to an argument over semantics here, but by saying "Windows should boot if you have installed the requisite Boot Camp drivers," you are implying "that the Boot Camp drivers [are] needed for Windows to boot." I was just clarifying your post so people didn't get confused.
As for booting a Mac Pro off a USB flash drive, if you have been successful in doing so, can you share with me your method? I've tried booting of an OCZ Rally2 4GB flash drive and it's never worked on my Mac Pro. It doesn't show up when I hold option down and if I try to boot through rEFIt, I get an error about my Mac's firmware not supporting USB booting (I have the latest firmware installed, too). I've tried GPT and MBR partitions, both to no avail. Booting off USB hard disk drives is no problem though. And I can boot off this flash drive on a Core Duo iMac.
Any ideas?

  • How do you boot a Mac Pro hardrive as an external drive on an iMac?

    Hi All,
I hope you can help me.
I have a Mac Book Pro. The mother board has died but the hard drive is still working fine according to the technicians.
I decided not to repair the Mac Book Pro as its quite old and I wanted a bigger screen so I got a new iMac.
The problem is when the Mac Book Pro died there were two files on the desktop that I had not backed up.
I know its not a massive problem. But my curiosity has made me wonder if it is possible to plug the Mac Book Pro into the iMac and boot the Mac Book Pro's hard disk as an external disk on the iMac so I can recover the files.
I'm sure it must be possible. But how?
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance.

From what you have said about the disk drive coming from an older Mac, my initial response is no. The odds are that the version of OS X and the drivers on the disk drive from the old MBP will not be able boot the new iMac.
But do you really need to boot from the old disk drive or just gather the data from it?
If all you need is the data that should be doable by putting the disk drive in an external enclosure and connecting it to the iMac.

  • Can you tell me how to use a USB Flash Drive

Not familiar with USB flash drive.  Anyone tell me how it operates?

...but don't expect even close to the access speeds you would get with a hard drive!  That's fine of course since you should use it for example, as an emergency boot drive, or transporting stuff to and from other locations, or backups for selected stuff.

I currently use a PC using windows vista, I would like to purchase a Mac mini and need to know if it is possible to transfer data from the intuit quickbooks program to the Mac mini? I have the data backed up on a USB pen drive. I wasn't sure if the saved data would be compatible with the Mac mini from the windows pc.

  • GPO: CD and DVD: Deny write access prevents user from using their USB Pen drive, but other users or ok

My Users have secure pen drives that launch a CDROM partition with a secure logon app that decrypts the main USB mass storage element of the pen drive on successful logon. The problem I have is that users who install the usb pen drive cannot then
initialize the CDROM launcher app to input their password to access the mass storage element of the pen drive making it useless.
However, any other user that has the same type of pen drive who then plugs it in to the endpoint that already has the drivers installed is able to access their own pen drive or the other users pen drive (providing the know the password).
So I've isolated the problem being down to the presence of the GPO setting stated above on the Removable Storage Access Policy, and by not having this policy in place when a user installs the pen drive they have no issues, but I can't find a way to clean
up a user who is already broken even if I remove the GPO from that user, delete their local profile so that they logon as a new user (no roaming or other data) and use a variety of utilities such as USBOblivion to clear out the registry and file system of
the USB device and installation. When the original user logs back on and then installs the usb pen drive again they have the same issue, but no other users do. I have the same issue if I try this with an alternative user or admin as the first user after the
'clean up'. Everyone else can use the pen drive except the user that originally installed it when the GPO was in place.
If I move the user to a new endpoint or rebuild their endpoint then they have no problem being the installer of the usb pen drive and then using it since the GPO was removed, so what I need to know is what is it about the USB install and the GPO that
is tattooing in Windows somewhere and how do I remove it?

    Hi,
In my opinion, this is probably not Windows GPO problem. To confirm the suppose, you can follow the path below to check GPO settings if there is any change after the software installed.
    Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\System\Removable Storage Access
    User Configuration\Administrative Templates\System\Removable Storage Access
These two policy manage system and current user Removable Storage access.
If there is no change with these policy, it would be better to contact the manufacture of the driver for further assistance.

  • How many OS can you have in Mac Pro 1.1, have 3HDD so 3 OS?

    Hi,
Currently have a Mac Pro 1.1, and want windows 64 bit as 32 bit isn't that good, keep running out of ram which slows the machine down! I currently have 2 HDD in this configuration:
    Disk 1: 250GB, mac osx 10.7.5
    Disk 2: 500GB windows 32 bit partition
                500GB mac extra storage partition
I may get another HDD if I can install windows 7 64 bit on it, i just have a few questions.
I have a patched windows 7 64 bit to allow it to install via bootcamp, but had problems before so erased it and installed 32 bit, (had driver issues on 64 bit, and non mac gpu so couldn't see boot screen).
If I install it on a 3rd hard disk, will it show up when I hold down command when i boot up? I want to keep 32 bit in case something goes wrong.
Someone with experience would be awesome!
So I want to install windows 64 bit ultimate on a third hard drive without tampering with the others, i also want to know how to boot to it if it doesn't show up in the mac boot screen!
I have 10GB of ram and would like to fully utilise it, that along with 8 cores would make a powerful machine, which is limited in 32 bit!
Also, any additional guides to install it on a separate disk would be good!
    Many thanks

In iTunes playlists and folders are two different things.  I assume you are asking about playlists.  100 will not be a problem.
However, it is unnecessary to create a playlist for Now 82.  If the tracks are properly tagged, it will show up as an album.

  • Can't Boot My Mac Pro

    Hi All
I installed the latest set of apple updates on Monday night, and allow my computer to restart to finish the install. But now when it try’s to restart, it makes the chime noise, the white screen appears followed 30 odd seconds later by the Apple logo and the spinning disc. Then maybe 10 seconds later, i hear two of my hard drives cut out, followed a few seconds later by the other two, then the machine restarts again, and just repeats this over and over.
I've tried Putting the Leopard CD in, and holding down C to boot to CD, but this always fails and it won't boot to the CD. I tried holding Alt as if i wanted to boot camp, and i get the boot menu, with the Leopard CD there as well, and only two of my hard drives, and a 3rd Hard drive icon titled EFI BOOT???
Even if i try to boot to the CD or any other drive, after a minute of it trying to boot, the entire machine just kernal panics.
I connected the machine to my MacBook using a Firewire cable, and started it using T (target disk mode) and it appears on my MacBook, with all 4 hard drives plus the array. I've run disk utility on the MacBook on the array and disks all appear fine.
I've also reset the PRAM and the SMC controller.
Does anyone have any idea's, as I’m now utterly stumped?
    Thanks all.
    R

Before you do any updates, clone your system and repair your disk drive first, then do a Safe Boot and either use standalone updates, or use the menu option to download and save but not update and do update later. Download to another location maybe than your hard drive too.
Repair your drive before there are problems.
The EFI is one of your boot drives.
A Safe Boot, or booting into Single User Mode and running FSCK -FY is one way in an emergency to try to repair a drive.
So, you have another disk drive you can boot from, but can't?
Try removing your system drive and see if you can boot from DVD then, which would say it is a severe directory problem most likely.
Invest in Alsoft Disk Warrior or TechTool Pro (4.6.2 and 5.0 comes out soon as free upgrade). Or TechTool Deluxe.
You say "array" so do you have the Apple Pro RAID card? or are you booting from software RAID?

  • I can not boot my mac pro 5,1 while holding Option key

    Hi,
I have a mac pro 5,1 (3.33 six cores, 10.9 OSX) running a RAID 0 on a Sonnet Technologies PCI-E Tempo SSD Pro with two Samsung 840 pro 256GB.
I would like to reinstall from a USB or recover the machine so I restarted it while holding the Option key.
It did not work. What I have is just a white screen with the mouse pointer (arrow). I tried many time but nothing change.
I restart with pressed C key, Command+Option+R....: nothing works. I reinstalled by downloading a fresh copy of OSX 10.9 but nothing helped.
So I post here in order to get solutions from the experts.
If you know what to do for my case then please help me out.
    Thanks and regards,
    nhvma

installing OS X to a PCIe controller often won't work. What does:
Install to a drive on SATA 2 bus, then clone it over to your RAID. And create the RAID with 10.9.
Personally I have yet to read, hear of or experience in years that booting from arrays really helps. Larger volume yes but a single SSD is fine. Even putting one like yours on the SATA II bus and use the PCIe card for graphic library, for scratch, other uses where it does help and matters.

  • Can You mount a mac Pro In a case for On the Road work

I do audio pre and post production and I was thinking aobu ttaking a mac pro and putting it in a rack sideways . I know that the HD need pins(I think) to do that But I dont really know much else. any suggestions are appreciated

The MacPro is not a small tower. I don't think it will fit in a standard 19" rack case on it's side, even if you hack-sawed off the feet and handles (and who'd want to do that?!)
You can rack your Mac vertically with this deal: (it says G5 but I think the case is the same size for MacPro?)
    http://www.redco.com/shopexd.asp?id=876
And there are up to 5 rackspaces vertically for your outboard gear. This thing is the converter only and you still need to get a 12 space rack.

  • Broken cd drive, so can I boot Os X dvd in external usb Dvd drive on iBook

    So there it is:
My cd/dvd drive on my iBook 1,33 GHz PowerPc G4, 1,5GB DDR SDRAM is broken....
I want to know if is there some way to format my iBook hard drive and then boot from an external cd/dvd drive to install OS X 10.4 Tiger on it.."????
    Please help
    Thanks

You first need to boot your computer from the external drive with the Tiger disk. Once the computer is booted you can run disk Utility, format your internal hard drive and install Tiger. I don't know about more recent G4s but older Macs used to be somewhat selective about the brand of drives from which they would boot so there could be issues there.
Let us know how it goes.

  • Mac Pro using Mac Mini as Print Server

    Hi all,
Mac Pro is wired to my network, Mac Mini is Airport connected.
I'd like to use Mac Mini as a Print Server without keyboard and mouse. I've installed OSXvnc-server on Mac Mini and Chicken of the VNC (CVNC) Client on Mac Pro.
Mac Pro's keyboard is azerty as was Mac Mini, it's impossible to loggin with Chicken of the VNC, password is not accepted, I connect an azerty keyboard to Mac Mini and I can loggin.
Typing on Mac Pro in Mac Mini TextEdit through CVNC give weird keyboard layout, not only azerty qwerty different layout.
In between my two Mac Mini there wasn't any problem using CVNC and the same server but Azerty Qwerty layout.
Is there any other solution to use Mac Mini as a print server ? What about using Desktop remote connection ?
    Thanks,
    Peloche,
    MacPro 2.66, 6GB, 1TB; Mini G4, 1.45, 1GB; iPod 60 GB; 30" & 20" ACD; Apple IIC   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Ah… right! That explains it.
So what model printers are they?
    Ned,
Printers are HP Color LaserJet 2550L, HP Photosmart 8250 and Epson EPL-5900L.
I've changed the VNC Client from "Chicken of the VNC" to "VNCThing".
Now I can log in from Mac Pro using its Azerty Keyboard as Qwerty Keyboard.
Once logged in I've set Mac Mini Keyboard to "Extended (or Expanded ?) American" keyboard within System Preferences, with this option Mac Mini see the Mac Pro Keyboard as an Azerty layout...
I've connected two printers through USB2 Hub connected to Mac Mini and the third one direct onto Mac Mini USB port.
Back to Mac Pro "System Preferences Fax & Printers", "+", immediatly the 3 printers have been proposed, I've selected them and tested all: it works perfectly.
Mac Mini is set to "restart after power cut" and is connected for power onto a remoted control power distribution sockets, that means Mac Mini is starting and stopped when printers are powered on and off.
The sole small issue is that I can't find how to display Mac Mini GUI on Mac Pro at a better resolution than 1024 x 768.
    Thanks for your time,

can you operate the mac book pro 15 inch with out the battery?  I read somewhere in a post that it lowers the power to about 1 gig with out the battery.  I asked apple and they said it is not true because you can use the comp with the power adapter and battery together or either by itself and it will not effect the 2.16 gig.  Thank you.

If you remove the battery the CPU power will be cut by 50% (whatever they told you) so that there's no lack of power or overheating issues. It's best to always keep the battery in.

    Ernest

Not sure if I'm following you. I have 4 hard drives installed on my Mac Pro. I had a RAID 5 configured and functional for about 5 months. My battery died on the RAID card. I replaced the battery, seated the RAID card back in the slot I removed it from. When I booted to the USB drive to look in the RAID utility, I could see the battery is charged but my volumes are not showing.
The drives don't show in disk Utility. I built the RAID with the RAID Utility and they did show there. I have a early 2008 Mac Pro, Mavricks OS running Mac Server

  • HT201612 I was trying to install windows using boot amp but now I can't boot my MaOckbook pro again

I was trying to install windows using boot amp but now I can't boot my MacBook  pro again

Go to the Windows Control Panel and select Boot Camp applet. In that applet there is a Boot Drive option. Select Mac OS X.
Or restart the system and hold down the Option key for a few second. A Boot Menu screen will come up. Select Macintosh HD.
Once in OS X go to the Sys Prefences, Startup Disk and select Macintosh HD Mt Lion 10.8.2 and click Restart then Restart again. the system will now restart in Mac OS X.
To boot back to Windows do the same, Startup Disk, and select Windows then Restart and Restart again.
